Critic, writer, lecturer, teacher, and curator of exhibitions in the field of contemporary art, Lucy R. Lippard is also a political activist and feminist. She was a founder of several feminist art organizations including WEB, The Women's Art Registry, and Heresies: A Feminist Publication on Art and Politics. Among her books are Pop Art (1966), Six Years: The Dematerialization of the Art Object (1973), The Lure of the Local: Senses of Place in a Multicentered Society (1998), On the Beaten Track: Tourism, Art, and Place (1991), Overlay: Contemporary Art and the Art of Prehistory (1983), Get the Message?: A Decade Of Art For Social Change (1984), and Mixed Blessings: New Art in a Multicultural America (1990).
