Sephardic Voices: Contemporary Expressions of Crypto-Jewish Identity in New Mexico through Literature and Music

Sephardic Voices will feature vocal performances, poetry and dramatic readings. Vanessa Paloma and Consuelo Luz, each use song to express their voyage of discovery of conversa roots. Poet Isabelle Medina Sandoval, novelist Mario X. Martínez and playwright/actor Carol López, will read passages from their works exploring crypto-Jewish identity and family history. Paloma’s roots on her mother’s paternal side can be traced to crypto-Jews in Colombia, and Luz’s to Chile and Cuba. The other performers are Nuevomexicanos, from Mora, Santa Fe, and Española.
