The Presence of Women Women in the Arts in New Mexico and Arizona

Dr. Julie Sasse will give an overview of the many women artists and gallerists who contributed significantly to the rise of contemporary art in the Southwest.

Dr. Julie Sasse is the chief curator and curator of modern, contemporary, and Latin American art at the Tucson Museum of Art. Since joining the museum in 2000, she has organized more than ninety solo and group exhibitions of regional, national, and international artists. She is the author of more than thirty-five catalogs, books, and published essays, including the recently published Botanical Visions: The Art of MF Cardamone, published by Pomegranate Press.

In 2016 and 2017, Sasse was a scholar-in-residence at the Women’s International Study Center in Santa Fe, New Mexico, for her book project, “Art Gal: Elaine Horwitch and the Rise of Contemporary Art in the American Southwest.”She received a Louise Foucar Marshall Foundation Fellowship in 2013 for her dissertation, Blurred Boundaries: A History of Hybrid Beings and the Works of Patricia Piccinini; a Clark Art Institute fellowship in 2008 for her book, Trouble in Paradise; and a Latino Museum Studies Fellowship in Washington, DC, in 2007.

Sasse holds a BA from Southern Illinois University, an MFA and an MA in art history from Arizona State University, and a PhD from the University of Arizona.
