Friday 10am-5pm

Introduction from Dr. Andrew Wulf, Director of the New Mexico History Museum, and weekend organizers Meredith Davidson, curator of 19th & 20th Century Southwest Collections and Stephen Fried, author of “Appetite for America.”

Among the lectures and discussions planned throughout the day:

There will be two special Harvey family presentations. Anthropologist Dr. Stephen Harvey, son of Byron Harvey III — one of the family’s great collectors and cultural historians — will give a talk exploring his father’s life in collecting, curating and working with native artists, which will include material from his father’s unpublished and fascinating journals. There will also be a lively Q&A with Helen Harvey Mills, great-granddaughter of Fred Harvey, sharing her memories of growing up in the family business.

We will have a panel on updates in recent research on Harvey Girls and Harvey history, and how you can do research yourself (including filmmaker Katrina Parks, researcher Heather Paxton and Coleen Lucero, director of the Hopi Harvey Project).

Another panel will explore the 90th anniversary of Indian Detours with presentations by Bruce Duval on his grandfather R. Hunter Clarkson (who ran Detours) and Dr. Audra Bellmore, UNM/CSR professor and curator, on architect John Gaw Meem and his work on La Fonda.

The day’s final panel will feature the owners of the Harvey heritage hotels, restaurants and retail operations. Speakers include Allan Affeldt and Tina Mion from La Posada/Castaneda, Jenny Kimball from La Fonda on the Plaza, Bruce Brossman from Xanterra/El Tovar/Grand Canyon Railway, Dirck Shou of HF Coors china in Tucson (which is replicating Mary Colter’s Mimbreno china) and Michael Marquess of MotherRoadBeer in Flagstaff (which used Colter-designed art for specialty beer cans). Each will discuss their journeys in history tourism and retail.

Friday 5:30pm

Santa Fe School of Cooking has partnered with the New Mexico History Museum to offer Fred Harvey cooking class. $110 includes instruction, presentations and a meal with friends. 20% goes to support the History Museum’s public programs and exhibits. The class is filling up fast so call to register soon: 505-983-4511. http://santafeschoolofcooking.com/Hot_Stuff/index.html

2pm

Enjoy a new talk by author Stephen Fried, whose bestselling book “Appetite for America” helped reignite interest all things Fred Harvey. This year he will focus on “Ford: The Very Heart of Fred Harvey” exploring the role of Fred’s oldest son, who ran the business longer than his father, who developed the Grand Canyon and Southwestern tourism, and whose career dovetails with major anniversaries this year: the 100th anniversary of the National Park Service, which Ford was instrumental in creating, and the 90th anniversary of the Indian Detours.
