Culture Series: Michael & Peter Hurd

date_range January 10, 2019
location_on 4100 Dripping Springs Road
Las Cruces, NM United States
schedule 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

In the January Culture Series at the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum, Michael Hurd will tell anecdotal stories about his father, the great New Mexico artist Peter Hurd. Michael, an outstanding artist as well, will share memories of his father, his time on the ranch and elsewhere, some funny, all interesting.

The presentation, which is free, is being held in conjunction with the Museum’s new exhibit, “Drawn to the Land: Peter Hurd’s New Mexico.” The exhibit will be open beginning at 6:30 p.m. for a reception and Michael Hurd will speak at 7 p.m.

Michael Hurd, born in 1946, is the youngest son of Peter Hurd and Henriette Wyeth-Hurd. He began painting seriously in his mid-twenties. The guidance he received from his mother is reflected in his oils, however Michael has a style that is uniquely his own. He works mostly in watercolor, oil and charcoal. He designed and built the Hurd La Rinconada Gallery in 1986 and continues to paint and oversee the activities of the gallery, the family ranch and guest homes. Michael was named New Mexico’s Distinguished Artist of 1995 and received the Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts in 2016.
