Lecturer/Presenter: Glenna Dean, New Mexico State Archaeologist.
Ms. Dean holds graduate degrees in archaeology and botany and specializes in the study of people’s interactions with plants as revealed in charred seeds, broken plant parts, pollen grains, basketry, sandals, and other textiles made of plant fibers. Ms. Dean came to the New Mexico Historic Preservation division, Department of Cultural Affairs, in 1994 and was named New Mexico State Archaeologist in October, 1997. Her widely varied duties include public outreach, such as the annual New Mexico Archaeology Fair and this presentation. Fermentation is a specialized research issue for Ms. Dean, and her extensive studies have revealed dietary practices among ancestral people which carry practical implications for improving the health of people today.
