Title: Cochise peace pipe
Indian Agent Michael Steck and Chiricahua Apache leader Cochise smoked this pipe as they forged a peace treaty in 1859. Like many treaties, it brought a lull in the fighting, not an end. Three years later, Cochise resumed attacks after the army killed Mangas Coloradas. Photo by Blair Clark, New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs.
