SUMMARY:Dia de los Muertos: Pre-Columbian Past to Present Brown Bag Talks
DESCRIPTION:Recent archaeological evidence from Ireland sheds light on Bronze Age burial sites which indicate the beginnings of the later Celtic rituals and traditions of Samhain (SAH-win) which precedes that later Christian celebration of All Saints’ Day – translated into the New World as “Dia de los Muertos.” This talk delves into the ancient European past and the path that leads to the present contemporary practice of this celebration. \nThe Brown Bag talks will take place at the Center for New Mexico Archaeology at 12:00 noon in the CNMA library. Seating is limited. Admission is free. \nThe Center for New Mexico Archaeology (7 Old Cochiti Road) is located off of Caja del Rio Road\, across from Challenge New Mexico on the way to the Santa Fe Municipal Golf Course. Take 599 to South Meadows Road\, continue through the traffic circle west along the Frontage Road to Caja del Rio Road. CNMA is on the left-hand side of the road and is the large building with white sail-like skylights on the roof.

SUMMARY:Yucca as a Raw Material in the Past and Present Brown Bag Talks
DESCRIPTION:Yucca fiber has been a staple of the Office of Archaeological Studies’ education outreach programs\, and more recently we have explored its modern potential as part of an economic development exploration. This presentation reviews how yucca fiber and leaves were used in the past\, based on archaeological materials from throughout the Southwest. It covers “old ground” in terms of artifact forms\, evidence for processing\, and what we have learned through replication that may or may not be applicable to understanding the past. The presentation also covers “new ground” with comment on what we have learned through the economic development experiments. SUMMARY:Culture and History of the Southwest: Archaeological Perspectives #2
DESCRIPTION:Eric Blinman\, Director\, Office of Archaeological Studies Florescence and Crisis in the New Mexican Southwest: AD 900-1300 When agriculture is successful and reliable\, it can fuel the development of social and economic complexity. Sustainability of cultural innovation\, however\, is dependent on the fit between climate variation and community needs. The tenth through thirteenth centuries of New Mexico history represent the best and worst outcomes of climate change. Benign and predictable farming conditions supported the florescence of Mimbres and Chaco\, but as climate changed in ways less suited to reliable agriculture\, those cultural patterns were challenged. Climate doesn’t determine how people and cultures respond\, but in the Southwest is constrains economic potential\, either allowing or requiring adaptation to changed conditions. \nJohn Ware\, Executive Director (retired)\, Amerind Foundation Bridge to the Present: Migrations and Cultural Adaptations in the Post-AD 1300 Southwest The climate changes of the twelfth and thirteenth centuries resulted in dramatic reshaping of the Puebloan world and culture. Economic and social crises encouraged migration and often fragmenting of long-stable communities. Assimilation\, tolerance\, or rejection of migrants is evident in all parts of New Mexico as Puebloan peoples endeavored to reestablish successful families and communities. No region was spared direct or indirect impact\, and adaptation to new geographic and social landscapes was progressive over the period. Experimentation with new social and ceremonial institutions\, and the interactions between distinct cultural groups\, continued into the Spanish Colonial period. The result has been the complex pattern of similarity and difference of modern Pueblo peoples. \nThis lecture will take place at the Santa Fe Woman’s Club\, 1616 Old Pecos Trail\, 1pm – 4pm\, $75 for both dates\, $45 for one date. Reservations will be accepted by calling and leaving a message on (505) 982-7799\, ext. 5 after 7am on February 14\, 2017.

SUMMARY:A Boot in the Door: Pioneering Women of Southwestern Archaeology Friends of Archaeology Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:In this opening event of the lecture series\, Archaeology and Women in the Southwest\, series sponsored by the Friends of Archaeology and the state Office of Archaeological Studies\, Dr. Nancy J. Parezo\, professor of American Indian studies and anthropology at the University of Arizona\, will speak about the first wave of women archaeologists in the Southwest. \nThe lecture will be at 6 pm\, Friday\, Jan. 21\, in the History Museum Auditorium. Cost for Friends of Archaeology members is $13 per lecture\, $55 series; nonmembers: $16 per lecture\, $65 series; students with ID: $10 per lecture. Purchase tickets at Lensic Ticket Office (fees apply) or at the door (checks to Museum of New Mexico Foundation or cash only). Call 505-992-2718\, ext. 8\, for more information. \nThe names of the first archaeologists who worked in the American Southwest are famous to anyone who lives in Santa Fe: Alfred Kidder\, Kenneth Chapman\, Edgar Lee Hewett\, and John Wesley Powell. Less well-known is that Jesse Walter Fewkes’s wife came with him on all his trips to Mesa Verde\, digging and surveying alongside him. That Matilda Coxe Stevenson was a member of the first scientific surveying trip to Canyon de Chelly. That Emma Mindeleff accompanied her husband Cosmos as he surveyed ruins in the Verde Valley. And that Theresa Russell worked with husband Frank locating and excavating Hohokam sites for the Bureau of American Ethnology. \nNone of these women are listed in official reports\, which never mention their unpaid participation or give them the credit they deserve. The same can be said for the official histories of archaeology. But the early decades of archaeology in Arizona and New Mexico are filled with stalwart ladies who got their boot in the door before the 1920s. These pioneering women set the stage for the many women who came after them\, women who have had illustrious careers and increased our knowledge about indigenous history. \n It is time to remember these pioneers of the American Southwest and how important husband-and-wife teams were to archaeological research in New Mexico and Arizona. As M. R. Trouillot reminds us\, “any historical narrative is a particular bundle of silences.” These silences are the consequence of power relations entering into the production of histories. To this we can add fields like archaeology\, which have been largely defined as male. \n Among the women Dr. Parezo will introduce: \nEthnographer and political activist Alice Cummingham Fletcher\, who made sure that the School of American Archaeology was in Santa Fe\, and who wrote the first national antiquities act with Matilda Coxe Stevenson. \nMatilda Coxe Stevenson and her archaeological work around Zuni\, Acoma\, Cochiti\, Zia\, and in Canyon de Chelly. Lucy Langdon Wilson\, an influential professor and educational reformer and the first female academic to excavate her own sites (Otowi\, on the Pajarito Plateau). \nZelia Nuttall\, the world’s foremost specialist in Aztec codices\, who searched for connections to the ancient Puebloan world. Barbara Freire-Marreco\, a graduate student from Oxford; and Maud Woy\, from Denver\, the first two women to attend an archaeological field school with Edgar Lee Hewett. Marietta Wetherill\, who helped her husband excavate sites in Arizona. Women like Mary-Russell Ferrell Colton\, Harriet Cosgrove\, and Ann Axtell Morris\, who carried on work into the 1930s\, setting the stage for the rest of the women who will be discussed in this winter lecture series.
