SUMMARY:Diné Weaving Demonstration by Gilbert Begay
DESCRIPTION:Diné Weaving Demonstration by Gilbert Begay\, Blommer Gallery as part of the closing weekend for the exhibit 'They Wove for Horses: Diné Saddle Blankets'. Gilbert Begay is a rare male weaver and was featured in the 2008 film "Weaving Worlds". \nFrom the film 'As might be expected it is still primarily women who sit at their looms weaving\, sometimes full-time\, often just a bit here and there during time stolen from chores or full-time jobs. But there are men\, such as Gilbert Begay\, who have taken up weaving. Gilbert actually sells one rug about every two months\, which translates almost into a full-time job (300 hours = 7 ½ 40-hour workweeks). Living in Red Valley\, New Mexico\, Begay uses his late grandmother’s loom and weaving tools\, all made decades ago by his grandfather. To use the tools created by one’s grandparents must feel wonderful and timeless. Gilbert began weaving in his mid-teens. His first six rugs were crooked but marketable. He now incorporates his own designs rather than following strictly traditional images. Just as the weaving was passed on to him\, he hopes his nieces and nephews will develop a love of weaving. To that end\, he takes them up to the family ranch to tend sheep\, ride horses\, and live without electricity\, just like his grandparents used to do. '

SUMMARY:They Wove for Horses: Diné Saddle Blankets Exhibit Opening
DESCRIPTION:Exhibit Opening 1 to 4 PM. They Wove for Horses: Diné Saddle Blankets Highlighting the Diné weavers who produced complex saddle blankets and the design skills of Diné silversmiths who created dazzling headstalls of silver and turquoise. \n1- 1:30pm Opening performance by Diné Tah Dancers \n1:30–4pm Diné Weaving demonstration by Gilbert Begay \n 2pm “Diné Horse Blankets” lecture by Joyce Begay-Foss\, Director of Education and Curator \n2–3pm Nasario Garcia\, “Grandpa Lolo’s Navajo Saddle Blanket” Booksigning \nThey Wove for Horses: Diné Saddle Blankets opens at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture on March 25\, 2012 (on long-term view). The exhibition highlights both the textile-weaving proficiency of Diné weavers who produced complex saddle blankets for all occasions and the design skills of Diné silversmiths who created dazzling headstalls of silver and turquoise. \nThe saddle blankets on exhibit date from 1860 to 2002 and are arranged by weaving methods: tapestry weave; two-faced double weave; and twill weaves of diagonal\, diamond\, and herringbone patterns. By using a variety of warp and weft yarns—natural wool\, cotton\, angora mohair\, unraveled bayeta\, and Germantown—weavers added individuality to the everyday and fanciful tapestries they created for horses. \nHorse trappings on exhibit reveal the great pride that Diné horsemen took in their horses and how they adorned them for ceremonial and social events. The Diné first learned how to manufacture saddles and bridles from neighboring cultures and their proficiency quickly surpassed that of their mentors. That devotion resonates still\, as the horse remains a viable living force in Diné life today.
