SUMMARY:Nick Rosetta Stone and Shell Jewelry Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:Using all natural material and handmade processes\, he makes beautiful heishi necklaces. Nick learned the art from his parents\, Ray and Mary Rosetta. The heishi artform goes back to ancestral pueblo times\, long before the arrival of the Spanish in the Southwest\, when Kewa stone and shell jewelry – believed by many archeologists to be the oldest form of jewelry in the southwest-was highly prized and widely traded. \nNick does most of the lapidary work–cutting\, grinding\, sanding and polishing. His wife Me-Wee does ninety-five percent of the stringing. He obtains his materials from many different places–turquoise from Nevada and Arizona\, serpentine from South Dakota\, pipestone from Minnesota\, as well as stones from Canada\, Peru and Australia.  \nDemonstrations of his work will be on October 11th from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. \n  \n

SUMMARY:GranMary’s Place Storytelling
DESCRIPTION:GranMary’s Place is a storytelling program at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture that is dedicated to celebrating the memory of Docent Mary Sudbrink. Mary loved life\, children\, and telling stories to children visiting the Museum. \nJason Tecube\, grew up in Dulce\, New Mexico on the homelands of the Jicarilla Apache . At a young age he began learning about his tribe through various elders and relatives of his community. His knowledge also extends to the Apache tribes of the White Mountain\, and Mescalero. Whether they be songs or stories\, they are deeply rooted. \n

SUMMARY:Film Screening with Director Huicholes: The Last Peyote Guardians
DESCRIPTION:This recently-released documentary (120 mins. Spanish/English) tells the story of the Wixarika or Huicholes people – one of the most intact precolonial groups remaining in the Americas – and their struggle against both the Mexican government and the multinational mining corporations to preserve Wirikuta\, their sacred lands\, against mineral extraction. \nThis film highlights the global debate pitting ancient cultural values\, the exploration of nature\, and the inevitable development of the peoples against promises from the multinationals to create jobs and wealth for the people without contamination. \nThe mining is seen by the Wixarika and their supporters as a menace to the delicate biodiversity of this unique ecosystem\, liested by the UNESCO as a World Cultural and Natural Heritage site\, and a very real threat to their spiritual traditions and culture. \nPlease note film director Hernan Vichez will be accompanied by two Huichol Shamans in the film for a Q&A following each session. \nAdmission to the film is free with museum admission.
