SUMMARY:MIAC Annual Veterans Day Event
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our annual program celebrating the patriotism and sacrifices  of our Native American men and women.  \nProgram begins at 11am and includes: \n \n\n \nInvocation with Arnold Herrera (Cochiti Pueblo)\n \nNational Anthem\n \nReading of Veterans Day Proclamation\n \nSanto Domingo Color Guard\n \nTe Tsu Geh Oweenge School dance group\n\nAt 2pm\, we will  screen “Defending the Fire\,” a release by Silver Bullet Productions which garnered Best Picture in 2017’s SWAIA’s Class X. \nFrom Silver Bullet’s Website: Since the beginning of time\, Native American Warriors have navigated a unique cultural and spiritual path\, relying on the tenets of the Warrior in ancient and modern warfare. The lessons of the Warrior are universal; the spirit of the Warrior survives\, even in the face of conflict. \nWith a focus on the spiritual and historic journey of Native American Warriors\, Silver Bullet Productions will present the story of the Warrior\, the importance of cultures in modern quests\, and the lessons of War through the lens of these cultures. The characters will be elders and historians from New Mexican tribes and Native veterans of World War II\, and the Korean\, Vietnam and Afghanistan/Iraq conflicts. Grounded in research and guided by voices of men and women in our armed forces\, the documentary will reveal the distinct motive\, preparation\, conflict\, and healing of tribal soldiers.

SUMMARY:Hweeldi: The Woven Tribute Commemorating the Long Walk
DESCRIPTION:The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture (MIAC) is commemorating the 150th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Bosque Redondo\, signed June 1\, 1868\, by displaying an extraordinary wool rug woven in tribute to the Long Walk. Created in the early 1900s\, the rug is an impressive 9 ft. by 15 ft.\, last displayed at MIAC in 1996. \nWhile the identity of the weavers of the piece remains unknown\, Navajo oral history – and likely some first-hand accounts – informed the weavers along the way with their design.  \nIn 1868\, the Long Walk was initiated by the United States military as part of Manifest Destiny\, the concept that expansion of the United States in the 1800s was both justified and inevitable. Only the 1868 treaty allowed the Navajo to return to their Diné Bikéyah (Navajo sacred lands) in northwestern New Mexico\, where they rebuilt as a nation of herders\, farmers\, and weavers. \n“The Long Walk is the most tragic historical event among the Navajo people\,” said Joyce Begay-Foss\, curator and director of education. “Among most tribal members it is not spoken about due to the sensitive nature of the historical trauma.” \n“Other tribal members feel though that we must never forget what the people who came before us suffered and endured\,” Begay-Foss added.

SUMMARY:Nick Rosetta Stone and Shell Jewelry Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:Using all natural material and handmade processes\, he makes beautiful heishi necklaces. Nick learned the art from his parents\, Ray and Mary Rosetta. The heishi artform goes back to ancestral pueblo times\, long before the arrival of the Spanish in the Southwest\, when Kewa stone and shell jewelry – believed by many archeologists to be the oldest form of jewelry in the southwest-was highly prized and widely traded. \nNick does most of the lapidary work–cutting\, grinding\, sanding and polishing. His wife Me-Wee does ninety-five percent of the stringing. He obtains his materials from many different places–turquoise from Nevada and Arizona\, serpentine from South Dakota\, pipestone from Minnesota\, as well as stones from Canada\, Peru and Australia.  \nDemonstrations of his work will be on October 11th from 10:00 am to 4:00 pm. \n  \n

SUMMARY:GranMary’s Place Storytelling
DESCRIPTION:GranMary’s Place is a storytelling program at the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture that is dedicated to celebrating the memory of Docent Mary Sudbrink. Mary loved life\, children\, and telling stories to children visiting the Museum. \nJason Tecube\, grew up in Dulce\, New Mexico on the homelands of the Jicarilla Apache . At a young age he began learning about his tribe through various elders and relatives of his community. His knowledge also extends to the Apache tribes of the White Mountain\, and Mescalero. SUMMARY:Film Screening with Director Huicholes: The Last Peyote Guardians
DESCRIPTION:This recently-released documentary (120 mins. Spanish/English) tells the story of the Wixarika or Huicholes people – one of the most intact precolonial groups remaining in the Americas – and their struggle against both the Mexican government and the multinational mining corporations to preserve Wirikuta\, their sacred lands\, against mineral extraction. \nThis film highlights the global debate pitting ancient cultural values\, the exploration of nature\, and the inevitable development of the peoples against promises from the multinationals to create jobs and wealth for the people without contamination. \nThe mining is seen by the Wixarika and their supporters as a menace to the delicate biodiversity of this unique ecosystem\, liested by the UNESCO as a World Cultural and Natural Heritage site\, and a very real threat to their spiritual traditions and culture. \nPlease note film director Hernan Vichez will be accompanied by two Huichol Shamans in the film for a Q&A following each session. \nAdmission to the film is free with museum admission.
