SUMMARY:Artistic Heritage: Syrian Folk Art on Display in Lloyd’s Treasure Chest
DESCRIPTION:Folk Art is a treasure\, and Lloyd’s Treasure Chest offers a participatory gallery experience highlighting the Museum’s permanent collection of over 136\,000 objects of international folk art from over 100 countries\, representing thousands of unique cultures. Because the entire collection can never be on view at the same time\, collections are carefully stored and cared for in rooms such as our Neutrogena Vault\, which visitors can view from the Treasure Chest gallery. \nVisitors are invited to think about folk art. In fact\, there is no one definition of folk art. In collecting and displaying folk art\, the museum considers various concepts: Folk art is traditional art\, reflecting shared cultural aesthetics\, community values\, priorities\, and social issues. Folk art may change over time and include innovations in traditions. Folk art is handmade\, although it may include new\, synthetic\, or recycled components. Folk art may constitute income and empowerment for an individual\, a family\, or a community. Folk art may be art of the everyday or reserved for special occasions. Folk art may be learned formally or informally\, from family or other artists. Folk art may be intangible\, including various forms of expressive culture like dance\, song\, poetry\, and food ways. Folk art is of\, by\, and for the people. We mean all people\, inclusive of class\, culture\, community\, ethnicity\, and religion. Together\, we can consider the multitude of perspectives and come closer to understanding “What is Folk Art?” \nRotating thematic displays will offer close-up views of the museum’s folk art collection. In collaboration with the New Mexico History Museum’s exhibition Syria: Cultural Patrimony Under Threat\, opening June 23\, 2017;   MOIFA’s display of Syrian folk art opened June 4\, 2017. Hands on activities appropriate for ages 3 to 103 in the gallery include: coloring activities\, origami and a Javanese musical instrument.  The cultural context of folk art can be explored with a map\, book area. The notion that Folk Art may be intangible is explored with a musical instrument: a gender\, a gamelan instrument The re-opening brings back some old favorites from past exhibitions\, including “Last of the Red Hot Lovers”\, an American sculpture made from recycled metal by artist Dwight Martinek (aka “Wild Willie”)\, “The Followers of Ghandi” by renowned Master Folk artists Nek Chand\, and a Wedding Rickshaw from Bangladesh. \n

SUMMARY:Artistic Heritage: Syrian Folk Art A new display in Lloyd’s Treasure Chest
DESCRIPTION:Since 2011\, Syria has been plagued by conflict and civil war leading to a current humanitarian crisis. All over the news\, we see images of devastated ruins of what were once thriving cities and cultural centers such as Aleppo\, Homs\, Kobane\, and others; images and stories of unfathomable human suffering. But this is not the only side of Syria. Pointing to the country’s artistic traditions and cultural and religious diversity\, the Museum of International Folk Art will display and highlight its collection of Syrian folk art in Lloyd’s Treasure Chest. \nLloyd’s Treasure Chest is named for the gallery’s benefactor\, the late Lloyd Cotsen\, former CEO of the Neutrogena Corporation. In 1995\, Cotsen and the Neutrogena Corporation donated the Neutrogena Gallery\, Lloyd’s Treasure Chest\, a state-of-the-art storage facility\, and an important collection of international folk art. Lloyd’s Treasure Chest is an open storage concept gallery that allows visitors to view collections objects that are not on view in the museum’s formal exhibitions. In addition to the gallery being a place where visitors can explore the meaning of folk art\, collections items are rotated from storage into thematic displays set in the Treasure Chest. \nThis thematic display\, Artistic Heritage: Syrian Folk Art is presented in collaboration with the New Mexico History Museum their upcoming exhibition\, Syria: Cultural Patrimony under Threat\, opening June 23\, 2017.  June 4 is the first Sunday of the month\, admission is free for New Mexico residents;  youth 16 and under and members of the Museum of New Mexico Foundation are always free!

SUMMARY:Luted Crucible Casting Demonstration & Lecture with Piers Watson
DESCRIPTION:The event is offered in conjunction with the Sacred Realm: Blessings & Good Fortune Across Asia exhibition and celebrates its final day on March 19\, 2017.

At the end of  Piers Watson’s presentation\, paper flowers made by the public as offerings throughout the run of the Sacred Realm exhibition will be burned in the fire pit\, concluding the exhibition.    \nDemonstration will be held on the Milner Plaza in front of the Museum of International Folk Art and the lecture will be in the  Museum of International Folk Art\, on Museum Hill \nDemonstration is open to the public\, and the lecture is free with museum admission \nThe Sacred Realm exhibition features amulets\, votive offerings\, and ritual objects imbued with other-worldly\, divine qualities. Whether used in sacred dance\, to pray or help individuals show gratitude or ask for specific favors\, to interact with ancestors and deities\, or to ward off evil and attract positivity\, these objects are means to similar ends. As part of the exhibition\, audiences are invited to engage in gallery activities such as making amulets and creating offerings\, and are invited to attend the lecture and demonstration to learn about the Luted Crucible casting process—an ancient technique for making metal sculptures including dieties that are represented in Sacred Realm. \nLuted Crucible casting is a pre-Industrial Age lost wax technique\, found in the archeological record at the 10th century\, that is still in use in parts of India and West Africa but is almost unknown in Europe and America. Due to its efficiency\, low cost and low risk to health\, it is considered a natural form of bronze-casting with great potential for small-scale casting\, exploration and experimentation. \nGuest artist Piers Watson learned the process of Luted Crucible casting as an apprentice of hereditary tribal casters of Bastar from Chhattisgarh\, India. In 2015 he self-published\, “The Luted Crucible\, a Pre-Industrial Method of Metal Casting\,” the only book written by a practitioner of the craft and focused entirely on the subject. As an artist\, he exhibits his work in Europe and the USA.

SUMMARY:Sacred Realm: Blessings & Good Fortune Across Asia in the Cotsen Gallery\, Neutrogena Wing
DESCRIPTION:Almost universally\, yet through varied means and belief systems\, people have found ways to connect with these powers to bring stability to their lives\, to divert ill-will and harm\, and to attract love\, fertility\, prosperity\, longevity\, and safety … essentially\, to harness protection\, blessings\, and good fortune for themselves\, their loved ones\, and their communities. This exhibit invites visitors to explore some of the ways in which people seek and secure blessings and good fortune in Asia\, a vast and culturally diverse region. These intricate and thoughtfully made works of art are drawn mostly from the museum’s Asian collection and are exhibited together with unique media and engaging interactive gallery components. \n“Sacred Realm” reflects wide-ranging practices of belief that\, at the same time\, depict the common human desire to attain balance and harmony in the physical and spiritual realms of life.

SUMMARY:The Art of Gaman Arts & Crafts from the Japanese American Internment Camps\, 1942-1946
DESCRIPTION:The Art of Gaman reflects the strength of Japanese American character in the face of humiliating internment through nearly 100 objects created during World War II. The exhibition opens at the Museum of International Folk Art July 8\, 2012 and runs through October 7\, 2012. \n  \nSoon after the bombing of Pearl Harbor in December 1941\, 120\,000 ethnic Japanese on the West Coast—more than two-thirds of whom were American citizens by birth—were forced to leave their homes and move to internment camps for the duration of the war. \n  \nIn these bleak camps\, the internees used scraps and other found materials to make utilitarian objects and decorative art to beautify their surroundings. Nothing was viewed as waste—waxy string from onion sacks was unraveled and woven into baskets\, old toothbrush handles were turned into pendants\, gallon-sized glass mayonnaise jars became miniature display cases for fragile pieces of art\, tin cans were converted into toy trains\, produce crates were chopped into blocks and carved into bird pins. And since metal objects for carving\, cutting\, and more could not be brought into camp\, they were fashioned from sharpened butter knives and discarded metal. The internees resourcefulness is further evidenced by their having created sandpaper by gluing crushed glass onto pieces of cardboard. \nThese arts and crafts became essential for simple comforts and emotional survival. These tools\, teapots\, furniture\, toys and games\, pendants and pins\, purses and paintings—are physical manifestations of gaman\, a Japanese word that means to bear the seemingly unbearable with dignity and patience. \nIt is a wonder these objects of beauty survived. Their creators tended not to think of what they produced as “art\,” nor themselves as artists (since few had any formal training other than what they received in the camps from other internees). And many threw away their handicrafts viewing them as nothing more than painful reminders of a time they wished to forget. Objects included in the exhibition represent stories of perseverance\, from the small bird pin that belonged to Hirasuna’s mother that was the starting point for the exhibition. \n“The Art of Gaman\, highlighting art created by Japanese internees during World War II\, will take place in the museum’s Gallery of Conscience\, where such issues as war\, ecological and political disruptions\, and various economic and social concerns impact the creative spirit and the traditional arts are examined\,” said Marsha Bol\, museum director. \n“This exhibition provides an amazing opportunity to put a human face on the internees who were literally reduced to a serial number while held behind barbed wire fences during World War II\,” said Hirasuna. “The objects they made in camp represent a triumph of the human spirit over adversity. We can’t help looking at these beautiful things and thinking of the individuals who made them.” \nMost of the objects in the exhibition are on loan from former internees or their families. Historical context is provided through archival photographs\, artifacts\, and documentary films. The exhibition is organized by San Francisco-based author and curator Delphine Hirasuna with advisory support from the Smithsonian American Art Museum\, and is based on her 2005 book;  The Art of Gaman\, published by Ten Speed Press.   \nThe Art of Gaman opens at the Museum of International Folk Art on Sunday July 8\, 2012 with a lecture by Delphine Hirasuna at 1PM. The exhibition closes October 7\, 2012. \n

SUMMARY:Dancing Shadows\, Epic Tales: Wayang Kulit of Indonesia Epic Tales: Wayang Kulit of Indonesia
DESCRIPTION:Dancing Shadows\, Epic Tales: Wayang Kulit of Indonesia introduced the distinct form of wayang kulit found in Central Java. Various aspects of this performance art were explored\, including gamelan\, artistic techniques involved in making shadow puppets\, the cast of characters\, and regional variations of wayang. A puppet workshop\, where Visitors of all ages made and played with shadow puppets was complemented by computer kiosks to learn more about Gamelan instruments and Shadow puppets. \nThis highly refined and complex art form may be performed to commemorate important rites-of-passage (such as circumcisions and weddings)\, holidays\, national events (such as political elections)\, and personal accomplishments. \nPerformances are usually based on classical literature such as the Indian epics\, Mahabharata and Ramayana with contemporary issues incorporated into particular scenes. In fact\, the Museum of International Folk Art houses George Bush and Saddam Hussein shadow puppets. Important moral\, ethical\, and philosophical ideas are taught in every show\, while entertaining the audience at times with roaring humor and special action-packed scenes. \nThe exhibit’s highlight was a 3.5 meter\, double sided screen. Much like audiences in Central Java\, museum visitors can watch dancing and battling shadows (on video) on one side of the screen and walk around the stage to watch (a video of) the shadow master at work from “behind the scenes.” \nThis award winning exhibit featured a full gamelan ensemble and the Museum’s own extraordinary collection of wayang kulit— a full set of over 200 gold and bronze-leafed Surakarta-style\, court-based shadow puppets acquired from some of Java’s prominent puppeteers. The puppets flank the screen to the left and right creating the typical yet stunning arrangement that can be seen at actual performances in Central Java. Dancing Shadows\, Epic Tales: Wayang Kulit of Indonesia opened March 8\, 2009 and closed March 14\, 2010 and is available on-line
