SUMMARY:Opening Reception Focus on Photography
DESCRIPTION:Focus on Photography is a year-long cycle of photography exhibitions\, celebrating the museum’s rich collection of photographs and the key role the medium has played in shaping New Mexico culture.  The project continues through March\, 2015. We open with three concurrent shows – \nBeneath our Feet: Photographs by Joan Myers \nNew Mexico photographer Joan Myers has been making pictures for nearly forty years\, using her camera to explore relationships between people and the land. The exhibition of more than 35 photographs cuts across several bodies of her work and offers a sampling of the artist’s images from Antarctica to volcanos.    \nGrounded \nComplementing the exhibition of photographs by Joan Myers\, this selection of landscape photographs is drawn primarily from the museum’s collection and examines\, literally\, the ground beneath our feet. \nPhoto Lab \nWelcome to the lab\, where ideas develop! This lab explores the processes of color and platinum-palladium prints using the museum’s collection. Reading materials include books by Joan Myers\, how-to handbooks\, and other material to pique your interest.  Also check out the news board for an ever-changing selection of questions about photography that we invite YOU to answer!

SUMMARY:Lecture by Sarah Greenough My Faraway One: The Letters of Georgia O’Keeffe and Alfred Stieglitz\, 1915 – 1933
DESCRIPTION:In her long-awaited book\, My Faraway One: Selected Letters of Georgia O’Keeffe and Alfred Stieglitz\, Volume 1\, 1915-1933 (Yale University Press\, 2011)\, Sarah Greenough applies her formidable scholarship and insights to the engaging epistolary tale of one of the twentieth-century art world’s most famous couples. In more than 650 letters\, selected and annotated by Greenough from thousands of pages\, the two artists write candidly about topics including art\, music\, travels\, friendships\, and their powerful attraction to one another. This volume begins with the letters O’Keeffe and Stieglitz exchanged before they met\, details through their passionate affair and marriage\, and closes in the wee hours of New Year’s Day 1934\, when Stieglitz was seventy years of age. In her lecture\, Greenough will talk about tackling the voluminous correspondence of these two creative powerhouses and how their writings illuminate their works of art. Copies of the book are available for purchase in the museum shop.   Sarah Greenough is the Senior Curator of Photographs at the National Gallery of Art. DESCRIPTION:The New Mexico Museum of Art partners this year with Center\, Santa Fe’s renowned organization supporting gifted photographers\, on an exhibition of photographs by Tamas Dezso and the collaborative team of Michel Palazzi and Alessandro Penso\, first-place winners in the 16th Annual Center Awards for Project Competition and Project Launch. The exhibition opens at the New Mexico Museum of Art May 20 and runs through July 10\, 2011. “Working with Center provides the museum an opportunity to share work by talented newcomers from all over the world with our audiences in New Mexico\,” said New Mexico Museum of Art Curator of Photography Katherine Ware. “It’s a wonderful chance to see what’s happening in photography internationally in a language we can all appreciate and understand.” Speaking about Center’s objectives in sponsoring the competition\, Executive Director Laura Pressley said\, “The Annual Center Awards offer a bird’s-eye view of the current state of contemporary photography and what inspires people from all over the world to make images. Center’s awards honor meaningful stories and bring to light new and effective photographic vocabularies.” For his series begun in 2009 Here\, Anywhere\, Tamas Dezso received first place in the Project Competition. Here\, Anywhere offers a desolate yet beautiful examination of a post-Communist town in Hungary\, his home country—streets and whole districts left behind\, frozen in their past\, by the country’s decades-long wrenching political transition. Dezso writes about the abandoned structures in this series\, “…what remains would either be silently reconquered by nature or enveloped by the lifestyles of tomorrow’s generations.” Dezso’s project was selected by an international trio of jurors: Simon Baker\, curator of photography and international art at the Tate Modern in London; Alexa Becker\, acquisitions editor at Kehrer Verlag in Heidelberg; and Christina Cahill\, deputy director of editorial reportage at Getty Images in New York. This year’s first-place winners of Center’s Project Launch award are the Italian photographers Michele Palazzi and Alessandro Penso\, for their collaborative series Migrant Workers Journey. Selected for the prize by publisher Dewi Lewis\, of Dewi Lewis Publishing in England\, this body of work addresses the working conditions of migrant agricultural workers harvesting tomatoes in Basilicata\, in southern Italy. “A project such as this needs to go beyond the portrayal of the workers simply as victims\, it must reveal our common humanity\,” Lewis said of his reasons for supporting this ongoing series. This program is made possible in part by New Mexico Arts\, a division of the Department of Cultural Affairs\, and the National Endowment for the Arts.

SUMMARY:Michael P. Berman Keynote lecture for Earth Now
DESCRIPTION:Untrammeled: A Model for Wilderness \nWorking in black-and-white with a large camera\, the artist Michael P. Berman acknowledges his place in the landscape photography tradition established by Ansel Adams. Like Adams\, Berman's emphasis is on a profound appreciation of the land that is based on direct personal experience of the places he photographs. While Adams advocated for legislation aimed at protecting some of the continent's most dramatic and unusual geographic features\, Berman has concentrated his attention on lands damaged by neglect or overuse. Some are public spaces that have received too much attention\, while others are protected from human traffic by extreme aridity\, political boundaries\, military use\, or the presence of toxic substances. \nIn this keynote address for the exhibition Earth Now: American Photographers and the Environment\, Berman brings together his training as a biologist and a photographer to discuss the concept of “untrammeled wilderness” and why it may be a useful strategy in mediating human demands on the landscape. A series of the artist’s photographs will be screened during his talk. \nMichael Berman lives and works in San Lorenzo\, New Mexico. His photographs are in the permanent collections of many American museums\, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art; the Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston; the Center for Creative Photography in Tucson; and at the New Mexico Museum of Art in Santa Fe\, among others. He has an M.F.A. in photography from the University of Arizona in Tempe and a B.A. in biology from Colorado College in Colorado Springs. In 2008\, he was awarded a fellowship from the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation. \nFor more info about Earth Now» \nSt. Francis Auditorium; lecture is free admission.

SUMMARY:Opening for Earth Now American Photographers and the Landscape
DESCRIPTION:Ansel Adams’ and Eliot Porter’s landscape photography fueled a growing concern for the environment in this country. Earth Now starts with a suite of works by these two artists and moves on to a group of landscape photographers who came of age in the 1970s. \nA small historical section at the beginning of the show focuses on Adams and Porter as artists who worked independently but also actively participated in placing their photographs in the context of environmental activism.  Their idealized\, unpopulated landscapes set the standard for twentieth-century nature photography\, and each of their followers had to contend with the precedents they set.  Images by Robert Adams\, Robert Glenn Ketchum\, Mark Klett\,Terry Evans\, Patrick Nagatani\, Richard Misrach\, David Maisel\, and Bill Owens (around 20 works) give a sense of the changing voice of landscape photography through the end of the twentieth century. \nThe exhibition’s primary concentration is on work made after the millennium\, in response not only to artistic commentary in the preceding century but also in reaction to a critical shift in the human relationship to the landscape. The pictures stimulate visitors to think about their personal relationship to the environment and to consider the impact of the choices we make as a society and as individuals. \nAmong the artists represented in the second section of the show are Subhankar Banerjee\, Bremner Benedict\, Michael P. Berman\, Joann Brennan\, Suzette Bross\, Christine Chin\, Dornith Doherty\, Chris Enos\, Daniel Handal\, Beth Lilly\, Brad Moore\, Matthew Moore\, Brook Reynolds\, Laurel Schultz\, Christina Seely\, Sharon Stewart\, Carlan Tapp\, Brad Temkin\, Sonja Thomsen\, Robert Toedter\, and Phil Underdown.  Many are emerging artists whose work has not been shown in the Southwest\, while others are more established artists doing new bodies of work\, some of which have never been exhibited. \nFor more info about Earth Now> \nhttp://www.nmartmuseum.org/site/explore/current/earth-now.html \nAlso\, premiere of the Kamilo (Twisted Waters) video by Robert Gaylor about the The Great Pacific Garbage Patch. For more info about this important work>http://www.nmartmuseum.org/site/explore/current/kamilo-video.html \nFree public reception Friday\, April 8\, 2011 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. hosted by the Women’s Board of the Museum of New Mexico.

DESCRIPTION:Fri\, Feb 4\, 5:30-7:30 p.m. \nJoin us to enjoy more of the rarely-exhibited treasures from the Museum of Art collection.Cloudscapes offers photographs of the elusive clouds above New Mexico\, and Conserving Public Art offers a look at freshly rematted prints by Gene Kloss and B.J.O. Nordfeldt. \nCloudscapes; Photographs from the Collection \nA new exhibition of photographic luminaries invites visitors to lose themselves in a variety of  cloud formations\, from fluffy to enticing to intriguing to menacing. Cloudscapes features work by some of the masters of the medium\, including Alfred Stieglitz\, Paul Strand\, Laura Gilpin\, Eliot Porter\, and Edward Weston. Also featured more recent images by Paul Caponigro\, William Clift\, Robert and Shana ParkeHarrison\, and Jim Stone. \nConserving Public Art;The New Deal Artwork of Gene Kloss and B.J.O. Nordfeldt \nPublic art produced with federal support during the Great Depression represents an important component of the museum’s collection. The federal government still owns these works\, but the museum is responsible for their care and conservation. Unfortunately\, many were not matted\, or had been improperly matted in the 1930s. Recently a grant from the NM Chapter of the National New Deal Preservation Association enabled these works by Gene Kloss and B.J.O. Nordfeldt to be matted properly for protection and preservation. These works demonstrate the museum’s commitment to conservation and best museum practices. \n For more information\, check the website: http://www.nmartmuseum.org/site/explore/upcoming.html \nThese two shows open Friday\, Feb 4\, with a reception hosted by the Women’s Board of the Museum of New Mexico from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Admission is free.
