SUMMARY:Palace in the Raw Lecture series Fascinating Finds: Seven Bizarre and Extraordinarily Informative Artifacts found behind the Palace of the Governors
DESCRIPTION:Fascinating Finds: Seven Bizarre and Extraordinarily Informative Artifacts found behind the Palace of the Governors Between 2002 and 2004\, the Office of Archaeological Studies performed excavations behind Santa Fe’s Palace of the Governors in preparation for the construction of the New Mexico History Museum. This project recovered over 700\,000 artifacts\, each with a story to tell. Yet\, some of these items are -by their very nature- more fascinating than others. Objects\, such as an Aztec bowl with the power to cure acne and the slag-lined cupel from Battersea Works in England\, have the potential to shed light on lesser known aspects of New Mexico’s often sordid and colorful past.  This presentation will examine seven of the most bizarre artifacts found during the archaeological excavations and the history behind their use and disposal at the Palace of the Governors. \n  \nMatthew J. Barbour holds BA (2002) and MA (2010) degrees in Anthropology from the University of New Mexico and has worked for the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs since 2002. Currently\, Mr. Barbour is the Regional Manager of Coronado and Jemez Historic Sites. Throughout his sixteen year career\, he has published over 200 nonfiction articles and monographs. In 2012\, and again in 2014\, Mr. Barbour was awarded the City of Santa Fe Heritage Preservation Award for Excellence in Archaeology.

SUMMARY:Birds: Spiritual Messengers of the Skies at the Center for NM Archaeology
DESCRIPTION:Please note this exhibit is at the Center for NM Archaeology\, located at 7 Old Cochiti Road\, off the Caja Del Rio exit of 599. \nBirds are among the most cherished animals with whom we share the Earth. Where birds live well\, people thrive. The presence and wellbeing of birds reflects the health of the environment; they share every ecosystem with us\, playing the role of hunter and prey\, pollinators\, scavengers\, and dispersers of seeds. Feeding the spirit\, they can signify strength\, courage and freedom. They are companions to us and inspire us to think beyond our own confinement and limitations. With some 10\,000 species of birds in the world\, they represent one of the best adapted animals on Earth\, dating back to the time of the dinosaurs. \n“Birds: Spiritual Messengers of the Skies” explores the importance of birds among Native American culture both in the past and today. It includes information on some of the major bird species of the Southwest and how important birds have been as a resource for tools\, feathers and food. Birds in archaeology\, how they are studied and what that tells us about the past\, is also included. With help from Audubon New Mexico\, the exhibit inspires to communicate important aspects of birds and their role in our world. \nThe exhibit opens on International Archaeology Day\, Saturday\, October 20\, at the Center for New Mexico Archaeology located off the 599 Bypass in Santa Fe at 7 Old Cochiti Road (located off Caja del Rio Road\, right across from the Santa Fe Animal Shelter and Humane Society). The Center\, which houses the archaeology collections for the State of New Mexico\, and the Office of Archaeological Studies\, who shares the building\, will hold an open house from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will include tours of the facility and many activities and demonstrations for children and adults including atlatl (spear) throwing and archaeology demonstrations. The event is free of charge. Thereafter\, the exhibit can be viewed in the lobby of the Center until October 2019\, Monday through Friday\, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. (excluding holidays). \nThis exhibit complements The Year of the Bird\, the centennial of the Migratory Bird Treaty Act that was passed in 1918 to protect birds from wanton killing. The Year of the Bird is sponsored by National Geographic\, the National Audubon Society\, BirdLife International and the Cornell Lab of Ornithology. Visit any of these organizations’ sites to sign up\, learn how to help protect birds\, and find events near you!

SUMMARY:Pueblo Pottery Demonstration with Gabriel Paloma (Zuni)
DESCRIPTION:Our popular Pueblo Pottery Series continues with Gabriel Paloma (Zuni). Pueblo Pottery demos take place in the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture’s Buchsbaum Pottery Gallery. Don’t forget Wednesdays are free for seniors! Read below for more information on Mr. Paloma. \nGabriel Paloma was born in Zuni\, NM back in 1966. Having grown up on the Zuni reservation close to the area known as the “Halona:we (Middle Place)” throughout his life\, Gabriel has always been fascinated by images and how the Zuni World is represented now and back in time through the eyes of his elders. Naturally\, he was drawn into automotive but the interest in clay was cultivated during his teenage years when he took art and pottery classes in high school. \nAfter completing his high school journey and graduated\, Gabriel went to UNM Albuquerque to take college courses. The university was a huge setting and Gabriel took on the advantage of being close to home and headed back to the reservation to enroll at UNM Gallup to further his art education. \nGabriel is drawn into practice of studying old Zuni pottery and its designs which is fascinating to see how the A: shiwi people endured this art since in time memorial. This ancient art is a collaboration between the artist and the native land of how the earthly materials are utilized to produce his pottery today. Gabriel cherishes this connection with nature and who taught him how to create pottery. He feels that the artistic talent is exchange between mother earth and the artist opens up many opportunities. \nCurrently\, Gabriel is a pottery teacher at Zuni High School specializing in the Fine Arts Department. He teaches 15-18 year-olds in pottery and ceramics to help them nurture the same enthusiasm that he had when he took art classes. He is also teaching at an alternative high school in Zuni to pursue the same ecstatic love of pottery making with young adults. \nGabriel was introduced to his first ever West Valley Native American Arts Festival as a professional potter at Litchfield Park in Phoenix\, AZ. (1998) and in 2004 he was selected as one of the SWAIA FELLOWSHIP AWARD artist in Santa Fe\, NM.   In 2018\, he has been earning recognition and still building customer cliental at the same time improving on his elaborate Zuni style pottery.

SUMMARY:Let’s Take a Look! Curators Examine Your Treasures
DESCRIPTION:Curators from The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture and The Laboratory of Anthropology gather in lobby of MIAC to look at your treasures. They attempt to identify and explain any artifact or historic object presented to them. They prefer to work with objects from the Southwest but are willing to take a look at anything that is brought in. If they can not identify an object an attempt will be made to find someone who can. SUMMARY:First Friday- October Pluto and Space Science
DESCRIPTION:Almost 800 people learned the latest information about Pluto and the New Horizon mission during PlutoPalooza hosted by the museum Sept. 21 & 22. The scientists and engineers from NASA have left\, but the informational handouts\, hands-on activities\, and videos they brought will be used once more for the $5 First Friday event October 5\, 5:30 – 9 p.m. \nThe whole museum is open late on the first Friday evening of each month. Starting at 5:30 p.m.\, admission to the museum’s permanent exhibits is $5 per person\, a $3 savings off the usual adult price. \nNASA Solar System ambassador John Brandt will have a table display where he can answer questions about the dwarf planet and its comparatively large moon Charon. There will also be several fun and educational hands-on activities and videos to enjoy. More information about the New Horizons probe can be found here: https://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/newhorizons/main/index.html \n“In 2015\, we found out that Pluto is just as fascinating as other planets and moons in the solar system” said NMMNHS space science director Jim Greenhouse. “On Jan. 1\, 2019\, New Horizons will fly by Ultima Thule. We are looking forward to our first close-up look at a typical Kuiper Belt object to see what other surprises may be waiting in the outer solar system.” \nThe DynaTheater will be showing Humpback Whales. Set in the spectacular waters of Alaska and Hawaii and the remote islands of Tonga\, this ocean adventure offers audiences an up-close look at how whales communicate\, sing\, feed\, play\, and take care of their young. During First Friday\, admission to this program is $5 per person. The show begins at 6:30 p.m. and lasts one hour. The DynaTheater concession stand will be open before the showing and close when the video begins. \nThe planetarium will present Fractal Friday at the usual times of 6\, 7\, 8 and 9 p.m. with the normal admission of: Adults $10\, Seniors $7 & Children (3-12) $5. SUMMARY:Opening Reception Good Company: Five Artists Communities in New Mexico
DESCRIPTION:Since the end of the nineteenth century\, when some of the first academically trained artists began to settle in Taos\, later forming the Taos Society of Artists\, New Mexico has continued to provide fertile ground for artists to gather together and create a forum for their individual visions. The role of artist communities in New Mexico is explored through works by members of the Taos Society of Artists\, Los Cinco Pintores\, Transcendental Painting Group\, Rio Grande Painters\, and the Stieglitz circle. Despite their shared desire to form a creative community\, each of these groups had a distinctive aesthetic and set of guiding principles. The juxtaposition of these five groups offers a closer look at what makes each unique.

SUMMARY:Friends of History Lecture Series New Mexico\, Slavery\, and the Confederate Cause
DESCRIPTION:The election of 1860 turned on the issue of the expansion of slavery into the western territories–especially into the New Mexico Territory. Following Lincoln’s election\, the white South\, believing a Republican president would abolish the institution of slavery throughout the country\, panicked and began making plans to secede. The 8\,000 pages of documents produced by elected officials over Secession Winter illustrate the South’s perceived need to protect slavery and white supremacy. Dr. Pitcaithley’s lecture will examine the fundamental causes of the South’s secession and its eleventh-hour willingness to trade state authority for federal authority in the protection for the institution of slavery in the context of the symbolic argument over the extension of this country’s peculiar institution.

SUMMARY:Good Company: Five Artist Communities in New Mexico
DESCRIPTION:Since the end of the nineteenth century\, when some of the first academically trained artists began to settle in Taos\, later forming the Taos Society of Artists\, New Mexico has continued to provide fertile ground for artists to gather together and create a forum for their individual visions. The role of artist communities in New Mexico is explored through works by members of the Taos Society of Artists\, Los Cinco Pintores\, Transcendental Painting Group\, Rio Grande Painters\, and the Stieglitz circle. Each of these groups had a distinctive aesthetic and set of guiding principles Good Company offers a closer look at what makes each unique.
