Don’t forget Wednesdays are free for seniors!  \nA creative force in her life\, Martha’s mother influenced her work from jewelry to pottery. She recalls her mother selling small drums\, bears\, and turtles under the Portal at the Palace of the Governors. “My heart has always belonged to my mother clay\,” she states. She has been working at the Poeh Center for 7 years and shows at Indian Market\, MIAC’s Native Treasures\, the Heard\, and the New Mexico State Fair\, where she’s won several prizes.

SUMMARY:The New Deal in New Mexico: Preserving Hispano Culture Through Music & Lore Friends of History Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:Aural historian and author\, Jack Loeffler\, will speak about his decades of experience documenting New Mexico folk music\, focusing on the recently published “Spanish American Music in New Mexico\, The WPA Era” for which he wrote the forward.  The book is a facsimile edition of “Folk Songs\, Dance Tunes\, Singing Games and Guitar Arrangements” which contained transcripts of Hispanic music collected between 1936 and 1941 by the Federal Music Project\, a program of the New Deal.  Loeffler writes: “I firmly believe that folk music and folk lore adhere culture to homeland.  Hispano culture in the Río Grande del Norte has been evolving for over four hundred years\, certainly long enough to have achieved deep indigeneity.” Jack will be joined by native New Mexico artist and renowned folk musician\, Frank McCulloch\, who will play and sing selections from the book and offer some of his own perspectives on New Mexico’s musical traditions. \nJack Loeffler\, in addition to his extensive list of publications of Southwest oral histories\, has made extensive field recordings of Hispano folk music since 1975.  His radio series\, La Música de los Viejitos\,  aired throughout the Southwest for several years beginning in 1979.  His book of the same title was published by UNM Press in 1999.  For sixteen years\, he co-produced with Enrique Lamadrid the folk music concert entitled ’Nuestra Música’ which is still held annually at the Lensic Performing Arts Center in Santa Fe.  His aural history archive now resides at the New Mexico History Museum.  \nFrank McCulloch is one of New Mexico’s most distinguished artists\, honored with a retrospective exhibit at the Albuquerque Museum in 2008\, and numerous honors including the Governor’s Award in the Arts\, UNM Distinguished Alumnus of the Year\, and Albuquerque Arts Alliance Bravos Award.  His work has been featured in Southwest Art magazine\, New Mexico Magazine\, and Art News\, among many others.  Not confined to just one art from\, Frank also is a well-known folk musician and performer of La Musica de los Viejitos.   A New Mexico Native of Hispano descent\, Frank has deep knowledge of our states musical traditions. \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:NASA exploration landings on Mars are always exciting events\, and the next one will touchdown on November 26\, 2018. The New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science will host a landing party that day from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Learn about the latest mission to study the interior of Mars during a live NASA broadcast. Mars-related hands-on activities\, videos\, and local solar system experts will also be available.\n \n\nThe InSight lander will arrive on Mars at around 1 p.m. MST on November 26. It will plunge through the thin Martian atmosphere\, heatshield first\, and land on the smooth plains of Elysium Planitia. The entry\, descent\, and landing sequence break down into three parts: \n \n\n \nEntry – The spacecraft is controlled by small rockets during descent through the Martian atmosphere\, toward the surface.\n \nParachute Descent – InSight slows by a large parachute\, jettisons its heat shield\, and extends its three shock-absorbing legs.\n \nPowered Descent – Once the lander separates from its backshell and parachute\, 12 descent engines on the lander begin firing and the onboard guidance software slows down the spacecraft until touchdown.\n\nInSight will study the deep interior of Mars to learn how all rocky planets\, including Earth and its Moon\, formed. The lander’s instruments include a seismometer to detect Mars quakes and a probe to monitor the flow of heat in the planet’s subsurface. Learn more on the mission website: https://mars.nasa.gov/insight \nLarry Crumpler has worked as the planning lead for the Opportunity Rover for the past 15 years\, but that is only the latest Mars mission he and his wife\, Jayne Aubele\, have participated in going all the way back to the first landing on Mars of the Viking probe. These planetary geologists will be available at table displays to answer any question about Mars or the InSight mission. Joining them will be two local NASA Solar System Ambassadors: Leonard Duda and John Brandt. \nNASA has scheduled live coverage of the landing from noon to 1:30 p.m. This will be shown in the ViewSpace Theater\, but during a break in the planetarium show schedule starting shortly before 1 p.m.\, the broadcast will also be available in the planetarium. In addition to the live broadcasts and expert tables\, videos and educational activities about Mars can be enjoyed in the museum atrium. \nEverything is included in museum or planetarium admission that day. Mission landings on Mars can only occur every two years at the most since that is when the Red Planet and ours are in the position to offer favorable trajectories. For the fifth consecutive year\, the New Mexico Department of Agriculture will be partnering with the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum to co-host HomeGrown: A New Mexico Food Show and Gift Market. \nHomeGrown will take place on Saturday\, Nov. 17 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday\, Nov. 18 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum in Las Cruces. Admission to HomeGrown is $5 per vehicle\, and the first 100 vehicles at the event each day will receive a free burlap shopping bag.  \nAttendees can expect over 70 vendors\, the majority representing a variety of food and beverage companies from around the state and all of which are NEW MEXICO—Taste the Tradition® and Grown with Tradition® members. Each booth will offer either locally produced products\, such as award-winning salsas and wine for attendees to sample and purchase\, or crafts made from agriculture resources. Wine sales and sampling won’t begin until after noon on Sunday.  \nThe two-day event will feature the NMDA’s Chef Ambassadors John Hartley and Rocky Durham\, who will be demonstrating various recipes using products that will be available for sale by vendors. Both chefs are New Mexico natives who have professional experience in creating dishes from locally made food products. \nAttendees are also invited to tour the museum and enjoy the exhibits at no extra cost. The Museum is located at 4100 Dripping Springs Road in Las Cruces and is a division of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs. The 47-acre facility tells the story of 4\,000 years of growing food in New Mexico through a variety of exhibits and demonstrations.

DESCRIPTION:Generally understood as simply a night scene\, the term nocturne refers to the quality of light in a painting\, and can be twilight\, waxing or waning light\, or the darkness of night. Nocturne speaks as much to the mood of a painting as it does the quality of light. Artists use this to create narratives and convey a mood that can be dreamy\, ethereal\, menacing\, meditative\, brooding\, or poetic. This exhibition is drawn from the museum’s extensive collection of nocturnes\, including painting\, prints\, and photographs. \nNight skies are one of the amazing natural beauties of New Mexico\, which is home to five Gold and Silver-Tier Dark Sky Parks\, as certified by the International Dark Sky Association. Wait Until Dark and Shots in the Dark are companion exhibitions and will be complemented by the Night Life Imagination Station where visitors of all ages are able to explore the themes of the night and delve deeper into the subject through a range of creative activities.

SUMMARY:Commemorating the Great War:  Paul Cret’s Cemeteries and Memorials in Europe A talk with William Whitaker
DESCRIPTION:Following World War I\, the American Battle Monuments Commission (ABMC) was established to enhance the overseas military cemeteries for the fallen and to erect memorials to the combat accomplishments of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF).  In 1925 ABMC retained Paul Philippe Cret as their consulting architect.  He subsequently guided every aspect of their ambitious construction program\, including designing the permanent headstones used for overseas American burials. This illustrated lecture will examine Cret’s crucial role in overseas military cemetery design after World War I as well as ABMC’s monument building program. \n William Whitaker is the curator and collections manager of the Architectural Archives of the University of Pennsylvania School of Design. He will introduce the Cret sites as he saw them in France in 2012\, and then explore memorials in a broader context of human experience and memory.  “I want people to take a way a sense of the power and experience of these places\, and my sense of how the architect or artist made that work.”  \n Trained as an architect and architectural historian at the University of New Mexico and the University of Pennsylvania\, Whitaker primarily works on documenting and interpreting Penn’s design collections\, including holdings related to the of life and work of architect Louis I. Kahn and landscape architect Lawrence Halprin\, as well as that of the husband and wife design team of Robert Venturi and Denise Scott Brown. He has lectured on a wide range of subjects related to twentieth century architecture\, landscape\, and community design in the greater Philadelphia region\, to audiences in the United States\, Canada\, Germany and India. \n Whitaker has co-authored: The Houses of Louis I. Kahn (Yale University Press\, 2013) with George Marcus\, the first comprehensive study of the architect’s house designs\, and is also a co-editor of Crafting a Modern World: The Architecture and Design of Antonin and Noemi Raymond (Princeton Architectural Press\, 2006) with Kurt Helfrich. \n

SUMMARY:Drawn to the Land: Peter Hurd’s New Mexico
DESCRIPTION:Legendary New Mexico artist Peter Hurd is featured in this exhibit in the Museum’s Traditions Gallery. \n“Drawn to the Land: Peter Hurd’s New Mexico” features 24 paintings and some of the artist’s belongings\, including one of his palettes\, a pair of chaps\, sombrero\, guitar\, and polo helmet and mallet. \nThe show\, which includes loans from the Hurd La Rinconada Gallery in San Patricio\, N.M.\, and the El Paso Museum of Art\, also features a video about Hurd (1904-1984). \nHurd\, who was born and raised in the Roswell area\, settled in the Hondo Valley after attending West Point\, serving as a war artist correspondent during World War II\, and living in Pennsylvania\, where he met his wife\, Henriette Wyeth. The artist is celebrated for his realistic portraits and luminous Southwestern landscapes that feature the vegetation\, rolling hills\, windmills\, water tanks\, and ever-changing skies of the area in Lincoln and Chaves counties. \nUnlike many artists who are proficient in a few mediums\, Hurd was skilled in a variety of media including oil\, lithography\, watercolor\, egg tempera\, and charcoal. Light was critically important in Hurd’s work and he strove to render it accurately. Hurd felt that the medium of egg tempera allowed him to truly capture the shifting light and arid landscape of New Mexico.

The legacy of medicinal drug consumption continues to this present day–although in a slightly different form. \nDr. Daniel Barto is a researcher at the UNM Health Sciences Center in the Department of Neuropathology. DESCRIPTION:Our popular Pueblo Pottery Series continues with Michael Kanteena (Laguna Pueblo). Pueblo Pottery demos take place in the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture’s Buchsbaum Pottery Gallery. Don’t forget Wednesdays are free for seniors! Read below for more information on Mr. Kanteena. \n“Remembering the beautiful pot shards he had picked up as a boy\, and wishing to learn about his ancient roots\, which he knew went back to New Mexico’s Chaco Canyon (the Anasazi Culture)\, Michael began collecting archeological catalogues of pottery forms.Through extensive study\, trial and error\, and even consultation with archaeologists\, he developed his pottery into remarkably close reproductions of Chacoan and Mesa Verde pottery.Recently\, his studies have expanded to the Mimbres and ancient Mexican People\, where human and animal effigies are common. Michael has added his own contemporary designs to these ancient themes\, to develop his own unique art form.A single effigy may be based on a Toltec theme\, painted with Chacoan designs\, and put together in contemporary form.Various feature articles have been written about Michael and his unique style of pottery making. DESCRIPTION:Join us for our annual program celebrating the patriotism and sacrifices  of our Native American men and women.  \nProgram begins at 11am and includes: \n \n\n \nInvocation with Arnold Herrera (Cochiti Pueblo)\n \nNational Anthem\n \nReading of Veterans Day Proclamation\n \nSanto Domingo Color Guard\n \nTe Tsu Geh Oweenge School dance group\n\nAt 2pm\, we will  screen “Defending the Fire\,” a release by Silver Bullet Productions which garnered Best Picture in 2017’s SWAIA’s Class X. \nFrom Silver Bullet’s Website: Since the beginning of time\, Native American Warriors have navigated a unique cultural and spiritual path\, relying on the tenets of the Warrior in ancient and modern warfare. The lessons of the Warrior are universal; the spirit of the Warrior survives\, even in the face of conflict. \nWith a focus on the spiritual and historic journey of Native American Warriors\, Silver Bullet Productions will present the story of the Warrior\, the importance of cultures in modern quests\, and the lessons of War through the lens of these cultures. The characters will be elders and historians from New Mexican tribes and Native veterans of World War II\, and the Korean\, Vietnam and Afghanistan/Iraq conflicts. Grounded in research and guided by voices of men and women in our armed forces\, the documentary will reveal the distinct motive\, preparation\, conflict\, and healing of tribal soldiers.
