SUMMARY:Maximiliano Luna and the Rough Riders
DESCRIPTION:Theodore Roosevelt called his men “children of the dragon’s blood\,” those Rough Riders who bravely followed him up Cuba’s Kettle and San Juan hills in the face of blistering Spanish rifle and artillery fire.  Surely no Rough Rider deserved that title more than Captain Maximiliano Luna of New Mexico.  Yet his fascinating life has remained in the shadows of history – until now. Richard Melzer’s biography of Captain Maximiliano Luna is far more than a simple tale of military glory\, for the author has placed this young soldier within the context of the unique place that is New Mexico. \n \nDr. Melzer is originally from Teddy Roosevelt’s hometown of Oyster Bay\, New York\, and has lived in New Mexico since 1973. Melzer earned his Ph.D. in History at UNM in 1979. He has taught history at the University of New Mexico’s Valencia Campus since that same year. He is now a Regents professor of history. He is a past president of both the Historical Society of New Mexico and the Valencia County Historical Society.\n \n \n \nTickets are $10\, free for members of El Rancho de Las Golondrinas or Museum of New Mexico Foundation. Doors open at 5:15 PM.

SUMMARY:Drugs: Cost and Consequences
DESCRIPTION:Drugs: Costs & Consequences is a traveling exhibit from the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) Museum and the DEA Educational Foundation. Formerly known as Target America\, it has traveled to 16 cities over the last 16 years\, and been viewed by over 22 million visitors. The exhibit will be on display at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science in Albuquerque\, NM\, from January 26\, 2019\, through September 30\, 2019. The exhibit will be open daily. Entrance to the exhibit is included in the admission to the museum. \nDrugs: Costs & Consequences  presents a non-partisan look at the many costs and consequences of drugs to our society and provides a very powerful message of the destructive health\, environmental\, safety\, and family impacts of drug use on our society. \nStudents\, youth\, parents\, and other adults in the community will have a phenomenal learning opportunity to participate in science-based experiences as well as explore global drug issues that impact the United States\, working through to every state and community. SUMMARY:Antique Treasures Show
DESCRIPTION:The 14th-Annual Antique Treasures Show at the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum has expanded to two days. The new show will have plenty of old treasures this year as more than a dozen antique and collectible dealers from as far away as Santa Fe will be here to show some of their merchandise. Most of the vendors are donating items to a silent auction that will continue over both days. \n  \nIVisitors can play “Stump the Curator” by bringing items in to see if our experts can identify them or their use. Some of the vendors will offer free\, independent\, informal appraisals of objects brought in by visitors. \n  \nPreservation also is an important part of the show\, and professionals from the Museum’s staff and New Mexico State University will offer advice on how best to preserve your treasures. \n  \nThe expanded show also will include several old-fashioned demonstrations\, and all of the regular Museum offerings and exhibits are included in the regular admission — $5 for adults\, $4 for senior citizens and $3 for children 4 to 17.

SUMMARY:Museum Telescopes Open Sunday Night\, Jan. 20 for Supermoon Total Eclipse
DESCRIPTION:(Albuquerque\, New Mexico ) — Another Supermoon Total Eclipse is coming to the skies over New Mexico Jan. 20\, 2019. The New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science’s will open its doors from 8:30 – 11:30 p.m. for visitors to fully appreciate the astronomical coincidence happening in the sky that evening after sunset (weather permitting). \nA lunar eclipse happens when the moon moves into the Earth’s shadow and reflects its dark\, red interior color. They don’t happen often because normally the moon moves slightly over or under the shadow when it’s on the far side of the Earth from the sun.  The next total lunar eclipse won’t happen until May 26\, 2021\, so this will be the last chance to experience this phenomenon for over two years. On Jan. 20\, the moon will also be relatively close to the Earth while it’s full\, which has recently become known as a Supermoon. The entire eclipse will be visible from New Mexico and the moon will be high in the sky\, so they’ll be no need to seek a location with a view of the horizon. \nFor a closer look at the moon as it slides into the red shadow\, telescopes provided by the Museum and Albuquerque Astronomical Society will be available around the Museum grounds and also on the Observatory Deck. A live video stream will show the eclipse from other locations around the world. Informational videos\, posters\, and handouts will explain the term Supermoon\, what causes eclipses\, and why eclipses make the moon turn red. \n“In addition to marveling at the moon’s transformation\, we may also look at other wonders in the sky through the available telescopes” said Museum Space Science Director Jim Greenhouse. \nHere are the times for the stages of the eclipse Jan. 20: Partial Eclipse Begins – 8:34 p.m. Total Eclipse Begins – 9:41 p.m. Maximum Eclipse – 10:12 p.m. Total Eclipse Ends – 10:43 p.m. Partial Eclipse Ends – 11:50 p.m. \nThe observing part of this event will be canceled if the sky is cloudy.  No reservations are required and admission is by donation. Feel free to come in your pajamas (assuming you don’t mind being seen in public that way)\, but check the weather and dress appropriately for being outside in the cold.

SUMMARY:“Pueblo Oral Traditions: Storytelling Through Music” Presented by Marlon Magdalena Sunday\, January 20\, 2019 @ 2 pm at the DeLavy House
DESCRIPTION:Many indigenous communities throughout the New World do not have written languages. As an educator\, he gives presentations\, demonstrations\, and lectures about Jemez and Coronado Historic Sites\, as well as\, other interesting topics. \nThe Lecture will take place at the Sandoval County Historical Society Museum (DeLavy House) on Edmond Road and Hwy 550\, Bernalillo. Admission is $5; Friends of CHS are free. For more information visit: kuaua.com or phone Barb at 815-978-5327. \n  \nCoronado Historic Site is open daily\, except Tuesdays\, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Admission is $5. A combination ticket\, good for admission to both Jémez and Coronado Historic Sites is available for $7. First Sunday admission for New Mexico residents with ID is free. SUMMARY:Pottery Demonstration Series with Dina Velarde (Jicarilla Apache)
DESCRIPTION:Join us as we continue our popular Pueblo pottery series\, this month featuring Jicarilla Apache artist Dina Velarde.  \nA graduate of the Institute of American Indian Arts\, where she received a BA in Museum Studies\, Velarde parlayed her experiences into her position at MIAC (education assistant)\, which affords her the opportunity to work with schools and other youth groups visiting the museum. “My lifelong study of the arts has allowed me to come full circle\,” says Velarde. “Working at MIAC\, I am now able to assist in creating art projects intertwined with the teaching of Native history\, while being surrounded and learning from museum professionals.” \nVelarde’s specialty is micaceous pottery\, ranging from light golden honey hues to rich dark black\, all with the glistening mica specks that are enhanced with traditional firing. All her work is done by hand following the traditions of her ancestors. \nHer work has no doubt benefited from her AA in Studio Arts\, which included painting\, drawing\, and photography – her other specialty. “Growing up on the Jicarilla reservation\, I always had an appreciation for art\, much being encouraged by my grandmother\, who did bead work and basketry\,” says Velarde. “It wasn’t until much later that I would come to focus on micaceous pottery and photography.”

SUMMARY:VIRTUAL Community through Making From Peru to New Mexico PROGRAMA VIRTUAL Comunidad a través de la Creación De Perú a Nuevo México
DESCRIPTION:Places of Memory\, paired members of two Indigenous women-led organizations: Tewa Women United (Española\, New Mexico) and the National Association of the Families of the Abducted\, Detained\, and Disappeared of Peru/ANFASEP (Ayacucho\, Peru) to explore the culturally specific ways they use art to heal community and individual trauma. Street Art and Activism\, was a convening of muralists\, printers\, and painters whose work engages contemporary social issues with a focus on public visibility. Rivers of Plastic brought together sculptors Aymar Ccopacatty (Aymara) and Nora Naranjo Morse (Santa Clara)\, who both see their home landscapes being transformed by plastic waste and use sculpture to open conversations about this intrusive and persistent material. \nThroughout the course of the exhibition\, Alas de Agua Art Collective created a mural inside the museum; students at the Kha’p’o Community School at Santa Clara Pueblo created sculptures from recycled materials; and local and Peruvian artists created a mural in a neighborhood in Santa Fe’s Southside. \nThe exhibition was on view from January 6\, 2019 through May 4\, 2020. It has now been made into a virtual exhibition that you can explore online. \nONLINE RESOURCES: \nVirtual Exhibition \nObjects from the Exhibition \n  \nREAD: \nNeon Signs of Life by Amy Groleau\, El Palacio Magazine\, Summer 2018 \nSpotlight on the Lima artist collective Amapolay Manufacturas Autonómas \nhttp://www.elpalacio.org/2018/06/neon-signs-of-life/ \n  \nUnnatural Resources by Amy Groleau and Marla Redcorn-Miller\, Summer 2018 \nA conversation with Nora Naranjo Morse (Santa Clara Pueblo) and Aymar Ccopacatty (Aymara) \nhttp://www.elpalacio.org/2018/06/unnatural-resources/ \n  \nWhoever Controls the Wall\, Controls the Voice by Katherine Lewin\, Santa Fe Reporter\, July 2019 \nCoverage of our community mural project on the Southside of Santa Fe \nhttps://www.sfreporter.com/news/2019/07/05/whoever-controls-the-wall-controls-the-voice/ \n  \nWATCH: \nPlaces of Memory \nVideos from the April 2018 collaboration of Native artists and activists from Peru and New Mexico \n  \nStreet Art and Activism \nVideos from the international collaboration of Amapolay (Peru) and seven local artists during summer 2018 \n  \nRivers of Plastic \nVideos of the projects by Aymar Ccopacatty (Aymara) and Nora Naranjo Morse (Santa Clara Pueblo) during Summer 2018\, and projects by young artists at Kha’p’o Community School\, Santa Clara Pueblo\, New Mexico in Fall\, 2019 \n  \nFronteras y Semillas \nVideos of our Southside mural project with Alas de Agua Art Collective (Santa Fe\, NM)\, Three Sisters Collective (Santa Fe\, NM)\, and Amapolay Manufacturas Autónomas (Peru) \n  \n“Community Through Making” brings artists from Peru to New Mexico by Chad Brummet\, New Mexico Living/KRQE March 2019 \nInterview with Israel Haros Lopez of Alas de Agua Art Collective and Curator\, Amy Groleau \n

SUMMARY:Opening Receptions
DESCRIPTION:Carved & Cast: 20th Century New Mexican Sculpture \nCarved & Cast presents a survey of traditional sculptural media\, genres\, and styles that New Mexican artists have utilized over the last century and highlights the various ways sculpture engages with the cultural\, social\, and aesthetic issues unique to the Southwest. Though this exhibition serves as a broad\, yet modest\, survey of 20th century sculpture in the region\, it also spotlights significant sculptors who are well represented in the collection. The work of Patrocinio Barela\, Agnes C. Sims\, Eugenie Shonnard\, Fritz Scholder\, and George Winslow Blodgett is highlighted in the alcoves while the rest of the gallery explores significant themes in 20th century sculpture such as portrait busts\, animals\, abstraction and modern takes on traditional themes. \nWait Until Dark \nWait Until Dark draws from the museum’s collection of painting\, prints\, and photographs to examine how nocturnes work within the broader category of painting. Generally understood as simply a night scene\, the term nocturne refers to the quality of light in a painting\, and can be twilight\, waxing or waning light\, or the darkness of night. Nocturne speaks as much to the mood of a painting as it does the quality of light. Artists use this to create narratives and set the scene for cultural and community events. These works illustrate how darkness conveys a mood that can be dreamy\, ethereal\, menacing\, meditative\, brooding\, or poetic. \nShots in the Dark \nPhotography is most often associated with light (the word itself means “light writing” in Greek). Shifting our expectations about the medium of light is this selection of images by four contemporary Southwest photographers — Christopher Colville\, Scott B. Davis\, Michael Lundgren\, and Ken Rosenthal — all working in the landscape at night. Each has a different perception of that special time between dusk and dawn\, evoking fears\, fantasies\, and a sense of wonder.

SUMMARY:Russell Lee’s FSA photography in New Mexico (Governor’s Gallery)
DESCRIPTION:Photographer Russell Lee created some of his finest work while traveling the United States for the Farm Security Administration. Among the communities he documented in New Mexico were Hobbs\, Holman\, Peñasco\, Taos\, Wagon Mound\, and Quemado.  Lee’s defining work as a documentary photographer was created in Pie Town New Mexico in 1940. \nPhotography was not the primary purpose of the FSA but its outstanding photography program is what the agency is best known and remembered for today. The artists Stryker hired became some of the most iconic of documentary photographers including Walker Evans\, Dorothea Lange\, Russell Lee\, Arthur Rothstein\, Marion Post Wolcott and Gordon Parks.  In many ways\, the FSA program defined American documentary photography and encouraged the development and popularity of the photo essay in publications like Life and Look magazine. \nRussell Lee was born in Ottawa\, Illinois in 1903. He trained and worked as a chemical engineer for years before studying to be become a painter. He borrowed a camera to develop his drawing skills and soon both his technical background and creative interests found a perfect tool of communication in the camera. Shortly after he was hired by Stryker to work for the FSA and was assigned to document the West and Midwest. While working for the FSA\, Lee produced some of the finest work of his career including extensive photo essays on the Spanish speaking people of Texas and the rural homesteaders in Pie Town\, New Mexico. \nThe photographs in the exhibition are shown with their descriptive captions and are all drawn from the New Mexico Museum of Art’s New Mexico Farm Security Administration Collection. \nCommissioned by the federal government\, the photographs and negatives taken for the Farm Security Administration and the Office of War Information are stored and maintained by the Library of Congress. Anyone can view the approximately 175\,000 black-and-white images in the Farm Security Administration/ Office of War Information collection on the Library of Congress website.   http://www.loc.gov/pictures/collection/fsa/background.html

SUMMARY:Blazing New Trails through New Mexico Historic Sites Friends of History Lecture Series
DESCRIPTION:Following a major reorganization in 2016\, the Historic Sites Division embarked on an ambitious effort to redefine the interpretive vision of preserving and sharing New Mexico’s rich history to visitors while elevating the stories of the individual sites to new levels.   This presentation will detail not only the new directions that Division Director Patrick Moore and his regional managers brought to the sites\, but also how perspectives on considering “contested space” shaped the conversations in telling New Mexico’s complicated past.    \nAfter graduating from New Mexico State University with BA and MA degrees in Political Science\, History\, and Public History\, Patrick Moore went on to earn a PhD from Arizona State University and began a career working on myriad projects that ranged from NASA to the United States Navy at Guantanamo Bay\, all while teaching future history practitioners their craft.   After spending 18 years directing the Public History program at the University of West Florida\, Moore returned home to New Mexico in 2016 to assume leadership of the Department of Cultural Affairs’ Historic Sites Division.

SUMMARY:A Gathering of Voices: Folk Art from the Judith Espinar and Tom Dillenberg Collection
DESCRIPTION:The unique installation of A Gathering of Voices reflects how Espinar has lived with folk art\, animating the objects through groupings that guide the viewer to cross-cultural comparisons of certain motifs\, forms\, or techniques. These “inhabited spaces” are re-created in the gallery\, along with deeper investigations of individual artists\, their workshops\, or the traditions they keep alive. \nJudith Espinar was one of the cofounders of the International Folk Art Market\, which was established in 2004 and is today the largest event of its kind focused on the work of master folk artists. She previously worked in the fashion industry in New York for more than 30 years\, before moving to Santa Fe\, where she owned and operated the longtime Santa Fe ceramic store The Clay Angel. \nPhoto: Addison Doty
