The museum holds the world’s largest international folk art collection of more than 150\,000 objects from six continents and over 150 nations\, representing a broad range of global artists whose artistic expressions make Santa Fe an international crossroads of culture. For many visitors\, fascination with folk art begins upon seeing the whimsical toys and traditional objects within the Girard Collection. For others\, the international textiles\, ceramics\, carvings and other cultural treasures in the Neutrogena Collection provide the allure.  The museum’s historic and contemporary Latino and Hispano folk art collections\, spanning the Spanish Colonial period to modern-day New Mexico\, reflect how artists respond to their time and place in ways both delightful and sobering. In 2010\, the museum opened the Mark Naylor and Dale Gunn Gallery of Conscience\, where exhibitions encourage visitors to exchange ideas on complex issues of human rights and social justice. \nA division of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs. 706 Camino Lejo\, on Museum Hill in Santa Fe\, NM 87505. SUMMARY:Talk on the Tribesourcing Project with Jennifer Jenkins\, PhD Sunday\, March 1\, 2020 2:00-3:30pm in the Vernick auditorium
DESCRIPTION:“This NEH-funded project seeks to “tribesource” 60 educational films about the Native peoples of the Southwestern U.S. works from the American Indian Film Gallery\, a collection awarded to the University of Arizona in 2011. Most of the films were made in the mid-20th century and reflect mainstream cultural attitudes of the day. Often the narration pronounces meaning that is inaccurate or disrespectful\, but the visual narratives are for the most part quite remarkable. At this historical distance\, many of these films have come to be understood by both cultural insiders and outside scholars as documentation of cultural practices and lifeways—and\, indeed\, languages—that are receding as practitioners and speakers pass on.  This project seeks to rebalance the historical record\, intentionally shifting emphasis from external perceptions of Native peoples to the voices\, knowledge\, and languages of the peoples represented in the films by participatory recording of new narrations for the films. \n  \nTribesourcing places historical materials with the peoples they represent in order to tell the untold or suppressed story. Each film in this project will be streamed in a Mukurtu-based website with alternate narrations from within the culture in English and in Native languages. This method allows for identification of people\, places\, practices\, vocabulary and stories that might otherwise be lost\, as well as providing a rich\, community-based metadata record for each film. Taking a small step toward cultural repatriation of content\, tribesourcing as a methodology is guided by the Protocols for American Indian Archival Materials (2006). \n  \nThis project seeks to contribute to ongoing efforts to decolonize the archive and restore voice and narrative sovereignty to the people who appear in these films—as agents of their own information rather than subjects of a governmental or corporate agenda.  Participation\, Equity\, and Inclusion are central to this project.”

SUMMARY:Peering into the Brain\, What Do We See? 2018-2019 Lecture Series “The Brain: It’s More than you Think”
DESCRIPTION:The brain is a highly evolved complex opaque tissue\, How the brain works to perceive the environment\, process information\, and coordinate responses remains a mystery. New approaches to imaging the brain at work while interacting with the environment include magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Join Dr. Bearer as she describes new research on the brain’s response to life-threatening fear\, how that may evolve to post-traumatic stress\, and how Alzheimer’s disease affects memory. \nDr. Bearer is a neuropathologist at the UNM School of Medicine and the Harvey Family Professor in Pathology. SUMMARY:Palace in the Raw Lecture series “War Time Governor: Lew Wallace’s Time in the Land of Enchantment”
DESCRIPTION:When Rutherford B. Hayes appointed former General Lew Wallace as the Governor of New Mexico he did so in hopes that his friend could bring order to the chaotic state of affairs in the territory. \nBetween 1878 and 1881 Lew Wallace took an active role in attempts to quell the violence that had erupted throughout the territory\, specifically in Lincoln and Colfax Counties. \nDuring his short time in the Land of Enchantment\, Wallace crossed paths with the likes of Billy the kid\, Pat Garrett\, “Dirty” Dave Rudabaugh\, and many more colorful\, and dangerous\, characters\, all while working in his spare time to finish his novel Ben Hur. \nThis lecture will explore the complex events that led to Wallace’s appointment\, his eventful short tenure as governor\, and the questions surrounding his eventual departure from the Territory of New Mexico.

SUMMARY:The Other Slavery: The Uncovered Story of Indian Enslavement in America
DESCRIPTION:Since the time of Columbus\, Indian slavery was illegal in much of the American continent. Yet\, as Andrés Reséndez illuminates in his myth-shattering The Other Slavery\, it was practiced for centuries as an open secret. There was no abolitionist movement to protect the tens of thousands of Natives who were kidnapped and enslaved by the conquistadors. Reséndez builds the incisive case that it was mass slavery—more than epidemics—that decimated Indian populations across North America. Through riveting new evidence\, including testimonies of courageous priests\, rapacious merchants\, and Indian captives\, The Other Slavery reveals nothing less than a key missing piece of American history. For over two centuries we have fought over\, abolished\, and tried to come to grips with African American slavery. It is time for the West to confront an entirely separate\, equally devastating enslavement we have long failed truly to see. \n \nDr. Andrés Reséndez is a historian and author specializing in colonial Latin America\, borderlands and the Iberian world. He received his B.A. in International Relations\, from El Colegio de México in Mexico City in 1992 and his Ph.D. in History from the University of Chicago in 1997. Dr. Reséndez’s work has long been concerned with the dynamics of borderlands in North America\, whether in terms of the emergence of ethnic or national identities or the prevalence of labor coercion and enslavement of indigenous peoples.\nTickets are $10\, free for members of El Rancho de Las Golondrinas or Museum of New Mexico Foundation. Doors open at 5:15 PM. \nBooks will be available for purchase provided by Garcia Street Books. Author will sign books after the talk.

SUMMARY:EXHIBITION OPENING! Beyond Standing Rock
DESCRIPTION:From early 2016 until February 23\, 2017\, Standing Rock Reservation in North Dakota was home to many individuals who were protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL). The protest at Standing Rock Indian Reservation is just one of many instances where corporate and/or government actions were viewed as violations of Native American Treaties\, a threat to Native American well-being\, and disrespect for the sacredness of Native land. This exhibit focuses heavily on the events leading up to the DAPL construction and the experiences of many who were at Standing Rock during the protest. However\, the exhibit will also highlight other examples of similar encroachments and violations of Native American sovereignty\, many of which have impacted Native health and sacred lands.

SUMMARY:Brain: The Inside Story
DESCRIPTION:As you read these words\, your brain is taking in all kinds of sights and sounds\, and zeroing in on a few. It is recalling what you have learned about the forms of letters\, the meanings of words\, and what information you hope to find on this website. Your brain is making decisions and forming new memories. All the while\, it is helping you stay alert and steadily breathe. How does the brain do it all? We are only beginning to understand the inside story of this remarkable organ. Today\, advances in biochemistry and new technologies that allow us to watch the brain in action are revealing more than ever before. \nBrain: The Inside Story explores the way the human brain works\, specifically as it relates to senses (“Your Sensing Brain”)\, emotions (“Your Emotional Brain”)\, thinking (“Your Thinking Brain”)\, how the brain ages (“Your Changing Brain”)\, and how technological advances may change our brains in the future (“Your 21st Century Brain”). \nBrain: The Inside Story is organized by the American Museum of Natural History\, New York (www.amnh.org)\, in collaboration with Codice\, Idee per la cultura\, Torino\, Italy in association with Comune di Milano – Assessorato Cultura\, Italy; Guangdong Science Center\, Guangzhou\, China; and Parque de las Ciencias\, Granada\, Spain.

SUMMARY:Friends of History Lecture Series The Galisteo Basin; Pueblo Communities across the Threshold of Spanish Colonization
DESCRIPTION:Today’s Galisteo Basin is a vast and inspiring landscape on the edge of Santa Fe. Open range land has preserved a record of history that is a remarkable testament to powerful influences\, natural and cultural\, from the fifteenth through seventeenth centuries. These three centuries encompass dramatic changes in climate\, economy\, population\, and organization of Pueblo communities\, even before the initial Spanish expeditions of the sixteenth century. \nEric Blinman Director\, Office of Archaeological Studies will discuss how the Seventeeth century Spanish Colonization changed the trajectory of Galisteo Basins cultural history in both expected and unexpected ways\, culminating in the Pueblo Revolt of 1680. But perhaps the most dramatic transformation occurred in the few years immediately after the Revolt. By the Reconquest\, the large Pueblo communities had moved north\, setting the stage for the Euroamerican-dominated pastoral landscape of today \n Dr. Eric Blinman was appointed director of the OAS in 2006 upon the retirement of Dr. Timothy D. Maxwell. Eric has been involved in archaeology in the western United States since 1967\, focusing on Ancestral Puebloan archaeology since 1979. His undergraduate training was at UC Berkeley\, and his graduate degrees in anthropology are from Washington State University. Eric joined the OAS staff in 1988 and served as an acting director for the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture in 1999. His research activities have included paleoclimate studies\, tribal consultations\, archaeomagnetic dating\, and reconstructions of the social history of Puebloan peoples. However\, he is probably best known for his research on pottery and textiles and for his participation in OAS educational programs throughout New Mexico. In the summer of 2007 he participated in a colloquium\, Past Climate Change: Human Survival Strategies\, hosted by the king of Sweden\, Carl XVI Gustaf\, in Narsaq\, Greenland.

SUMMARY:Maximiliano Luna and the Rough Riders
DESCRIPTION:Theodore Roosevelt called his men “children of the dragon’s blood\,” those Rough Riders who bravely followed him up Cuba’s Kettle and San Juan hills in the face of blistering Spanish rifle and artillery fire.  Surely no Rough Rider deserved that title more than Captain Maximiliano Luna of New Mexico.  Yet his fascinating life has remained in the shadows of history – until now. Richard Melzer’s biography of Captain Maximiliano Luna is far more than a simple tale of military glory\, for the author has placed this young soldier within the context of the unique place that is New Mexico. \n \nDr. Melzer is originally from Teddy Roosevelt’s hometown of Oyster Bay\, New York\, and has lived in New Mexico since 1973. Melzer earned his Ph.D. in History at UNM in 1979. He has taught history at the University of New Mexico’s Valencia Campus since that same year. He is now a Regents professor of history. He is a past president of both the Historical Society of New Mexico and the Valencia County Historical Society.\n \n \n \nTickets are $10\, free for members of El Rancho de Las Golondrinas or Museum of New Mexico Foundation. Doors open at 5:15 PM.

SUMMARY:Drugs: Cost and Consequences
DESCRIPTION:Drugs: Costs & Consequences is a traveling exhibit from the Drug Enforcement Administration’s (DEA) Museum and the DEA Educational Foundation. Formerly known as Target America\, it has traveled to 16 cities over the last 16 years\, and been viewed by over 22 million visitors. The exhibit will be on display at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science in Albuquerque\, NM\, from January 26\, 2019\, through September 30\, 2019. The exhibit will be open daily. Entrance to the exhibit is included in the admission to the museum. \nDrugs: Costs & Consequences  presents a non-partisan look at the many costs and consequences of drugs to our society and provides a very powerful message of the destructive health\, environmental\, safety\, and family impacts of drug use on our society. \nStudents\, youth\, parents\, and other adults in the community will have a phenomenal learning opportunity to participate in science-based experiences as well as explore global drug issues that impact the United States\, working through to every state and community. SUMMARY:Antique Treasures Show
DESCRIPTION:The 14th-Annual Antique Treasures Show at the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum has expanded to two days. The new show will have plenty of old treasures this year as more than a dozen antique and collectible dealers from as far away as Santa Fe will be here to show some of their merchandise. Most of the vendors are donating items to a silent auction that will continue over both days. \n  \nIVisitors can play “Stump the Curator” by bringing items in to see if our experts can identify them or their use. Some of the vendors will offer free\, independent\, informal appraisals of objects brought in by visitors. \n  \nPreservation also is an important part of the show\, and professionals from the Museum’s staff and New Mexico State University will offer advice on how best to preserve your treasures. \n  \nThe expanded show also will include several old-fashioned demonstrations\, and all of the regular Museum offerings and exhibits are included in the regular admission — $5 for adults\, $4 for senior citizens and $3 for children 4 to 17.
