DESCRIPTION:Barbara is a talented potter and an extension of her famous great-grandmother\, Maria Martinez. She personalizes her pottery that she describes as “slipped-designed polychrome” with inlaid coral and turquoise on etched black and sienna wares\, often inlaid on spider designs. \nCavan Gonzalez is a leader in the polychrome revival at San Ildefonso Pueblo. He comes from a long line of distinguised Native American potters starting with his great-great-grandmother\, Maria Martinez. He works using traditional methods\, though his designs are inspired by both past and present day life.

DESCRIPTION:As part of the programming associated with the current exhibition from the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration Drugs: Costs & Consequences Opening Eyes to the Damage Drugs Cause\, the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science is hosting a lecture on the Oral Effects of Methamphetamine Use: The “Meth Mouth” Syndrome. \nThe presentation featuring graphic images of dental disease will be given by Stephen Wagner\, D.D.S.\, M.S. and Charles Tatlock\, D.D.S. MPH at the Museum Thursday\, March 7\, 2019\, from 9:30 – 11 a.m. \nDoctors Wagner and Tatlock are nationally recognized experts in the research and treatment of patients with ‘meth’ mouth; and were some of the first to alert their profession to the deteriorating physical changes that occur with long-term use. Dr. Wagner’s dental images have been published in medical and dental textbooks and used by The New York Times\, ABC News\, The Discovery Channel and Newsweek. \nDr. Wagner is currently in his 40th year of private practice in Albuquerque\, where he grew up. He earned his DDS degree from the University of Southern California and prosthodontic training from MD Anderson Hospital\, Houston\, Texas. Dr. Tatlock is a Professor Emeritus at the University of New Mexico Department of Dental Medicine\, School of Medicine. He earned his DDS degree from Baylor/Texas A&M and MPH (master’s in public health) from UNM. \n

SUMMARY:Talk on the Tribesourcing Project with Jennifer Jenkins\, PhD Sunday\, March 1\, 2020 2:00-3:30pm in the Vernick auditorium
DESCRIPTION:“This NEH-funded project seeks to “tribesource” 60 educational films about the Native peoples of the Southwestern U.S. works from the American Indian Film Gallery\, a collection awarded to the University of Arizona in 2011. Most of the films were made in the mid-20th century and reflect mainstream cultural attitudes of the day. Often the narration pronounces meaning that is inaccurate or disrespectful\, but the visual narratives are for the most part quite remarkable. At this historical distance\, many of these films have come to be understood by both cultural insiders and outside scholars as documentation of cultural practices and lifeways—and\, indeed\, languages—that are receding as practitioners and speakers pass on.  This project seeks to rebalance the historical record\, intentionally shifting emphasis from external perceptions of Native peoples to the voices\, knowledge\, and languages of the peoples represented in the films by participatory recording of new narrations for the films. \n  \nTribesourcing places historical materials with the peoples they represent in order to tell the untold or suppressed story. Each film in this project will be streamed in a Mukurtu-based website with alternate narrations from within the culture in English and in Native languages. This method allows for identification of people\, places\, practices\, vocabulary and stories that might otherwise be lost\, as well as providing a rich\, community-based metadata record for each film. Taking a small step toward cultural repatriation of content\, tribesourcing as a methodology is guided by the Protocols for American Indian Archival Materials (2006). \n  \nThis project seeks to contribute to ongoing efforts to decolonize the archive and restore voice and narrative sovereignty to the people who appear in these films—as agents of their own information rather than subjects of a governmental or corporate agenda.  Participation\, Equity\, and Inclusion are central to this project.”

SUMMARY:Palace in the Raw Lecture series “War Time Governor: Lew Wallace’s Time in the Land of Enchantment”
DESCRIPTION:When Rutherford B. Hayes appointed former General Lew Wallace as the Governor of New Mexico he did so in hopes that his friend could bring order to the chaotic state of affairs in the territory. \nBetween 1878 and 1881 Lew Wallace took an active role in attempts to quell the violence that had erupted throughout the territory\, specifically in Lincoln and Colfax Counties. \nDuring his short time in the Land of Enchantment\, Wallace crossed paths with the likes of Billy the kid\, Pat Garrett\, “Dirty” Dave Rudabaugh\, and many more colorful\, and dangerous\, characters\, all while working in his spare time to finish his novel Ben Hur. \nThis lecture will explore the complex events that led to Wallace’s appointment\, his eventful short tenure as governor\, and the questions surrounding his eventual departure from the Territory of New Mexico.

SUMMARY:The Other Slavery:  The Uncovered Story of Indian Enslavement in America
DESCRIPTION:Since the time of Columbus\, Indian slavery was illegal in much of the American continent. Yet\, as Andrés Reséndez illuminates in his myth-shattering The Other Slavery\, it was practiced for centuries as an open secret. There was no abolitionist movement to protect the tens of thousands of Natives who were kidnapped and enslaved by the conquistadors. Reséndez builds the incisive case that it was mass slavery—more than epidemics—that decimated Indian populations across North America. Through riveting new evidence\, including testimonies of courageous priests\, rapacious merchants\, and Indian captives\, The Other Slavery reveals nothing less than a key missing piece of American history. For over two centuries we have fought over\, abolished\, and tried to come to grips with African American slavery. It is time for the West to confront an entirely separate\, equally devastating enslavement we have long failed truly to see. \n \nDr. Andrés Reséndez is a historian and author specializing in colonial Latin America\, borderlands and the Iberian world. He received his B.A. in International Relations\, from El Colegio de México in Mexico City in 1992 and his Ph.D. in History from the University of Chicago in 1997. Dr. Reséndez’s work has long been concerned with the dynamics of borderlands in North America\, whether in terms of the emergence of ethnic or national identities or the prevalence of labor coercion and enslavement of indigenous peoples.\nTickets are $10\, free for members of El Rancho de Las Golondrinas or Museum of New Mexico Foundation. Doors open at 5:15 PM. \nBooks will be available for purchase provided by Garcia Street Books. DESCRIPTION:From early 2016 until February 23\, 2017\, Standing Rock Reservation in North Dakota was home to many individuals who were protesting the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL). The protest at Standing Rock Indian Reservation is just one of many instances where corporate and/or government actions were viewed as violations of Native American Treaties\, a threat to Native American well-being\, and disrespect for the sacredness of Native land. This exhibit focuses heavily on the events leading up to the DAPL construction and the experiences of many who were at Standing Rock during the protest. However\, the exhibit will also highlight other examples of similar encroachments and violations of Native American sovereignty\, many of which have impacted Native health and sacred lands.
