SUMMARY:Summer Letters from the Reservation
DESCRIPTION:Summer Letters from the Reservation is a series of letters and oral histories read in chronological order\, to represent the lives of the people on the Bosque Redondo Reservation\, as well as the policies employed by the U.S. government toward Navajo and Mescalero Apache people from the summer months of June\, July\, and August 1863 to 1868. \nA free light supper will be served (first come first serve) from 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. green chile cheese brats\, a Texas BBQ hotdog\, an Italian style hotdog (bell peppers\, onions\, and a cream sauce)\, baked beans\, chips/salsa\, iced tea\, coffee with a twist\, and fry bread with honey or powdered sugar for dessert. Supper will be followed by the letter reading in the site auditorium until 7:00 pm. SUMMARY:Museum Offers Sensory Friendly Experience
DESCRIPTION:Visitors can get a close look at the Bisti Beast without the loud dinosaur roar. Bright flashing lights that are normally used in some of the museum’s exhibits will be turned off. The sound in “The Land of the Volcanoes” and “Origins” exhibits will also be turned off. The museum will show a sensory friendly documentary called Superpower Dogs in the Dyna Theater. \nThe film narrated by Chris Evans features life-saving dogs. Superpower Dogs follows a rookie puppy “Halo” who is training to find survivors with disaster response teams. It also features “Ricochet” a surfing therapy dog that helps people with special needs and veterans with PTSD. Other superpower dogs in the film include an avalanche rescue dog\, a lifeguarding dog and a canine that helps endangered species. \nThe IMAX film will be shown in 2D at 6:30 p.m. with the theater lights dimmed. Assistance Dogs of the West will also be at the screening. Visitors can learn more about service dogs and matching dogs with people in need of help. SUMMARY:Pueblo Independence Day
DESCRIPTION:Come join us for our 16th annual commemoration of Pueblo Independence Day. On August 10\, 1680—the Pueblo People of New Mexico—aided by Apache and Navajo allies—launched a successful rebellion against Spanish colonization. Commemorative activities will begin with a pilgrimage run from Walatowa plaza in Jemez Pueblo to Giusewa Pueblo kiva at Jemez Historic Site (approximately a half marathon or 13 miles). Participating in this run\, or supporting a runner\, is a way to pay tribute to the Ancestors and show appreciation for the sacrifices they made. Their brave resistance helped preserve the Pueblo way of life: our culture\, our languages and our right to one day reclaim our aboriginal lands. The run begins at 7:00AM\, and the general public is welcome to participate. Volunteers will provide water stations at one mile intervals\, and a shuttle service for slow runners will be available. At 10:00AM\, guest speakers will welcome all the runners and their sponsors to the site. The following festivities\, between 10:30AM and 3:00PM\, will feature: Jemez traditional dances and Native American flute music. There will also be authentic Native arts & crafts and Native food. SUMMARY:San Ildefonso Pottery: 1600 - 1930
DESCRIPTION:San Ildefonso pottery is about a little known art\, an American art form that deserves recognition and appreciation alongside the other great world art systems. Before there was Santa Fe and before the idea of “art colony” was born there was San Ildefonso\, a small village of extraordinarily visionary artists whose ceramic legacy is rich and vitally meaningful. In addition\, San Ildefonso provided a vital partnership for first Museum of New Mexico director Edgar Lee Hewett in creating his vision of the founding of the Museum.     \nSan Ildefonso Pueblo pottery are an art form that is simultaneously both ancient and contemporary; being a constant for Pueblo people for millennia; always present\, forever evolving to reflect the historical and cultural circumstances of Pueblo people’s lives. Artisans work in a variety of styles\, always evolving in response to the changing circumstances of their own lives and the world around them.  Pottery\, or more precisely\, its aesthetics and production is ritualized behavior\, serving as a critical and material conceptual ideal of the San Ildefonso world. As San Ildefonso people remind us\, “Our history is recorded in pottery.”   \nArt is an inadequate word but there is no precise word in the Tewa language. Making pottery and painting is making life; those lives residing in the works that will be part of this exhibition. Pottery and painting incorporates a myriad of ideas from ancient design iconography to new tools and materials. But at the core of these arts sits an accurate presenting of the values and principles of Pueblo cosmology. When we speak of these arts we are hearing these values; the principles of honoring the creation through the way lives are lived. “I am prayerful when I gather my clay\,” a friend tells me. She continues\, “my mother and grandmother dug their clay here\, as did their aunties and mothers\, so I am prayerful\, respectful of this place and bring only good thoughts.”  \nConsider that pottery making is a prayer\, pottery making is creating life. Pottery has profound significance; the creation of pottery is the combining of two sacred and fertile substances –water and earth—combining them to make a new life. Designs on pottery are neither iconographic\, metaphoric nor symbol but rather become the form that is painted—a leaf form is a leaf\, a painted feather is prayer or breath. Painting infuses pottery with sacredness. These arts are visual prayer.   \nThe exhibit will use new methodologies of combining Native ethnogenisis\, discussions with descendant community members\, and museum object and archival research\, developing a holistic approach and portrait of artisans\, art production and social contexts. San Ildefonso Art will take a unique approach to best tell the stories of San Ildefonso art through their own interpretations and meanings as well as helping gallery visitors appreciate new understandings of the history\, contexts\, and meanings of San Ildefonso art\, culture and history. \nCurators Bruce Bernstein\, Erik Fender and Russell Sanchez in partnership with potters and today’s community members bring this important project to the public’s attention to help in creating more appreciation of the depth of artistic creativity and cultural knowledge incorporated into San Ildefonso Art. The MIAC’s important collections will be featured\, many of the pieces never exhibited. These artworks also tell the story of a singular alliance between the village of San Ildefonso and the foundling Museum of New Mexico. Two years before the museum was created first director Edgar Lee Hewett in the company of San Ildefonso men explored their homelands\, spending countless hours enveloped in their intimate knowledge of its cultural and natural landscapes. Whether research\, exhibition\, publication\, or education the fledgling museum relied on the men and women of the village. The village prospered in unexpected ways too\, finding their culture was valued after years of degenerative governmental pressure to cease its practice\, helping give rise to new forms of pottery. \nBernstein is a former director of MIAC and assistant director at the National Museum of the American Indian. Erik Fender and Russell Sanchez are active San Ildefonso community members and award winning potters. Both stand within their families long lineage and heritage of producing pottery. SUMMARY:The Frontier\, Inside Out
DESCRIPTION:In recent years\, border politics have become the driving force in U.S. politics nationally\, crystalizing questions of who gets to be American. At this talk\, Sammy Feldblum will examine the politics of the border through a spate of recently released books on the subject\, tracing how U.S. views of Mexico and of Mexicans combine reheated rhetoric from the British and Spanish colonial eras with frontier ideas about Native Americans. The often brutal policing of the increasingly impervious southern border reads as an inversion of the frontier myth\, which looked out on a world and saw nothing but opportunity for expansion. Frontier tactics echo in the modern day: the migrant camps dotting the border recall Fort Sumner’s days as a concentration camp for Navajo and Mescalero Apache. Understanding that history is key to understanding the frontera today. \nThis stimulating talk will occur over the lunch hour and we encourage those attending to bring food with them. If this is your first time coming to Fort Sumner Historic Site\, please stay and bear witness to the history yourself.

SUMMARY:16th Annual Ice Cream Sunday
DESCRIPTION:Everyone’s favorite summer treat is the star of the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum’s largest event of the summer. \nThe 16th-annual Ice Cream Sunday\, which happens to land on National Ice Cream Day\, is from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. on July 21.  \nAdmission for Ice Cream Sunday is the same as regular museum admission: $5 for adults\, $4 for senior citizens and $3 for children ages 4 to 17. Children 3 and under are admitted free.  \nThe first 600 people to pay admission to Ice Cream Sunday receive a coupon for a free 5-ounce cup of Caliche’s Frozen Custard to use at the museum during the afternoon. Visitors are also invited to make their own ice cream using tin cans or plastic bags. Ingredients are provided and there will be instruction areas in the museum courtyard. \nThe popular annual ice cream sandwich eating races are scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m.\, with registration from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. Only those who sign up will be allowed to compete and there will be a limited number of participants. The age categories for the races are: 4-6\, 7-10\, 11-13\, 14-17\, and 18-and-over. Prizes will be awarded to the top finishers in each division. \nThere also will be old-fashioned games\, activities\, the regular museum offerings\, and a plant sale featuring plants grown in the museum’s greenhouse. The Vintage Iron Tractor Club will give barrel rides to children\, and museum volunteer Jerry Schickedanz will be making ice cream using a washing-machine motor and handing out free samples. Lost Cruces Escape Room and Red Hawk Golf Club will also have activities.

Even better – learn how to build your own horno in a three-part workshop beginning July 20 and 21 and concluding on August 10th.  The three-part workshop will require advance registration\, including a fee of $150 and participation will be limited. DESCRIPTION:Leah Mata is a member of the yak tityu tityu – Northern Chumash Tribe\, located on the Central California Coast. Her work focuses on living forms of regalia and jewelry\, which she creates using traditional practices. Her work is also closely tied to environmental issues\, sustainability\, and site-specific materials. Leah holds a BA in Anthropology and an MA in Cultural Sustainability. She has won numerous awards and teaches Indigenous Liberal Studies at IAIA.  Please join us for an informative evening to hear Leah discuss her work\, the effect of climate on traditional native art\, and the debate within her community whether to evolve traditions or let them die.
