DESCRIPTION:Carol Emarthle-Douglas (Northern Arapaho/Seminole) is a Traditional/ Contemporary basket-weaver: traditional because of her coiling technique and contemporary because her materials include spring hemp twine\, waxed linen thread\, reed\, raffia\, and silk. Working in this style for over 15 years\, her unique creations have garnered numerous awards\, including the 2015 SWAIA – Best of Show. Carol has also been the recipient of many Fellowships including the 2016 Dubin Fellowship from the School for Advanced Research. Her basketry is highly regarded among collectors and has been acquired by numerous museums throughout the US\, most notably the Brooklyn Art Museum\, the Montclair Art Museum\, the Autry Museum of the American West\, and the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art.

DESCRIPTION:BYOH – Bring Your Own Horse\n\n\n \n\n \n\nTake part in a unique experience not available anywhere else in the country. Led by a historically uniformed guide\, riders will be entertained by the history of Fort Stanton and a demonstration of soldiers’ horse skills. Put your horsemanship skills to the test as you’re immersed in the intricacies of military drill on horseback. Afterwards\, enjoy a tour of the fort and then a trail ride in some of Fort Stanton’s most scenic back country. \n\n\n \n\n \n\n \nDetails\nTotal time investment for this unique activity is about 2 1/2 to 3 hours. Riders will be required to provide their own horses\, equipment and transportation.  \nRiders and horses assemble on the old Army drill field across from the historic fort stables. SUMMARY:Pueblo Pottery Demonstration Series with Flo and Lee Vallo (Acoma)
DESCRIPTION:Flo and Lee Vallo have been making and painting pottery for over 20 years. She was taught by her mother and grandmother\, and her mother-in-law has encouraged her to explore and expand her craftsmanship. The couple are fourth-generation potters and painters.  With this exploration of pottery\, they opened a small Pottery business on the Acoma Reservation.  Tribal members and community members come to purchase their pottery for cultural and traditional use. They recently traveled with the New Mexico Tourism Bureau to Chicago to promote tourism to New Mexico. They were the featured pueblo pottery artists to promote the Native American culture in New Mexico.

SUMMARY:Música Buena: Hispano Folk Music of New Mexico In the Hispanic Heritage Wing
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition will explore different forms of music such as special music played at different life stages (songs of birth\, weddings\, death)\, seasonal music (songs for Christmas\, Lent\, and  Harvest seasons) \,as well as liturgical and secular plays and reenactments. For example\, one such tradition is that of Moros y Cristianos\, which is based on medieval folk plays that re-enact the final battle between a newly unified Spain and the Moors who ruled for 800 years. The play represents multiethnic heritage and influences in Spanish culture and is the only play today still performed entirely on horseback. Another popular folk play\, Los Comanches\, is based entirely on historical events in the Southwestern US. This play depicts the joining of forces between the Spanish settlers and Pueblo Indians to fight and keep the invading Comanches out of New Mexican lands. There are several versions of this reenactment\, each with its own unique flavor. Another popular tradition is El Baile de los Matachines which is still practiced in both Hispano and Genízaro villages and Native Pueblos\, from the Río Arriba (Northern New Mexico) all the way south to Mexico & Guatemala. \n  \nThe exhibition will feature close to 75 objects from the museum’s permanent collection and from private collections around the state. Some of these items include: a Matachines danzante costume; a 19th century New Mexican-made violin; a hand carved wooden matraca (rattle) made by Cordova artist José Dolores López; an antique handwritten book of Alabados (religious chants sung during Holy Week and at Funerals); and contemporary instruments made by musician Cipriano Vigil and other local New Mexican artists. A New Mexico Music Living Treasure\, Vigil served as special consultant for the exhibition. Photographs and memorabilia will accompany the objects. The exhibition will include a substantial amount of the newly-digitized sound footage from the museum’s archives.  Video footage will also showcase contemporary practices of New Mexican traditions that continue today including the Baile de Los Matachines\, Las Posadas and Los Pastores\, Moros y Cristianos\, Dar los días and Los Comanches. New recordings also include interviews and footage of traditions that are handed down from elder to younger generations. Sound and video stations will be included in the exhibition along with a space for live in gallery performances. SUMMARY:Diego Romero vs. the End of Art
DESCRIPTION:Diego Romero vs. the End of Art will be a dynamic exploration of a Cochiti Pueblo artist’s journey through life as depicted through his work.  \nFor decades\, California born Cochiti potter Diego Romero has created renowned historical and autobiographical artworks. Acclaimed for his neo-Mimbres pottery illustrating Pueblo Indian history\, his father’s Korean War stories\, and his relationships with women\, family\, substances and art\, Romero’s work lays bare the life of one Native artist and Native history.  \nThe exhibition narrative will be a biographical and culture history in conjunction with a conflict against a shadowy figure known only as the End of Art. Throughout the exhibition video presentations will feature interviews with the artist and others detailing his path and the evolution of his art. This will be one of the largest assemblages of Romero’s ceramic works and his lesser known multi-media drawings. Per conversations with the artist\, several family members will be included as part of his story and as necessary allies in his battle with the nebulous nemesis\, the End of Art. In an effort to engage a younger audience and the non-traditional museum visitor\, the catalog will be a hybrid of a traditional volume combined with elements of a graphic novel. This method will convey Romero’s stories of cultural and personal endurance. It is hoped that Native youth in particular will relate to their story through art.  \nThe goals of this exhibition are to share Romero’s unique and engaging stories of life and struggle through a cultural and pop culture lens\, and the visitor will learn of Native survival and ultimately celebration.

SUMMARY:Agnes Pelton : Desert Transcendentalist
DESCRIPTION:Organized by Phoenix Art Museum\, Agnes Pelton: Desert Transcendentalist is the first survey of the obscure American modernist painter in more than 23 years. Although she painted conventional landscapes and portraits\, Pelton (1881–1961) is most celebrated for her abstract compositions that reflect her interest in esoteric subjects\, including numerology and Agni Yoga with its principal focus on fire as a guiding force. The exhibition of more than 40 works from various private and museum collections sheds light on Pelton’s artistic contributions to American Modernism\, a movement more commonly associated with artists such as Georgia O’Keeffe (1887–1986) in the Southwest and Marsden Hartley (1877–1943) in New England. Furthermore\, Pelton’s interest in spirituality and abstraction links her to a larger international movement that is only now being properly studied and contextualized. Desert Transcendentalist represents a fascinating reexamination of an overlooked female artist and her rightful place within the canon of modern and contemporary art history.

SUMMARY:First Friday Observe the Moon Night The Museum will celebrate International Observe the Moon Night
DESCRIPTION:October 5th is International Observe the Moon Night. The museum will stay open late for folks to enjoy First Friday ($5 admission for First Friday evening of the month)\, fractals shows will be going on and we will have almost a first quarter moon… so it should be great for seeing craters in detail on October 4th(one day before the observe the moon night). \nThe Museum reopens at 5:30 p.m. the first Friday of each month with a special admission rate of $5 per person for the museum only. October 4’s theme is in observance of International Observe the Moon Night (InOMN)\, which is officially on October 5\, so the Museum is celebrating one night early. InOMN is an annual worldwide public event that encourages observation\, appreciation\, and understanding of our Moon and its connection to NASA planetary science and exploration.  \nThis InOMN is special since 2019 is also the 50th anniversary of the Apollos 11 and 12\, so activities\, handouts\, and videos about the missions will be available in the Museum’s atrium from 5:30 – 8 p.m. From 7:30 – 9 p.m.\, view the first quarter moon in detail on the Observatory Deck through telescopes provided by the Museum and The Albuquerque Astronomical Society. \nThe Planetarium will present Fractal Friday at the usual times of 6\, 7\, 8\, and 9 p.m. with the normal admission of adults $10\, seniors $7\, and children (3-12) $5. Shows typically sell out in advance\, so get your tickets early at fractalfoundation.org. The Hope Café will be open continuously from 9 a.m. – 6 p.m. that day\, so you can enjoy dinner while waiting for the museum to reopen (only the café entrance will be open from 5 – 5:30 p.m.) \n

SUMMARY:Friends of History Lecture Series  Lamy’s Letters: A New Look at Santa Fe’s First Bishop
DESCRIPTION:Rick Hendricks and Dr. Claude Fouillade\, a retired French professor at New Mexico State University\, have been working on a project to translate and edit a selection of Jean-Baptiste Lamy’s letters. \nLamy wrote in French\, Spanish\, English\, and Latin over the course of his career. Reading the letters in their entirety gives a new understanding of Lamy’s life and times. The letters also present a different view of certain events than one gets from reading Paul Horgan’s Lamy of Santa Fe\, winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 1976. In this talk\, Rick will show how Horgan used Lamy’s correspondence to construct his narrative history. \nRick Hendricks is the New Mexico State Records Administrator. He was the New Mexico state historian for nine years.He received his BA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and his PhD from the University of New Mexico. He also studied the history of Spain in the Americas at the Universidad de Sevilla. \nRick is a former editor of the Vargas Project at the University of New Mexico. After the conclusion of the Vargas Project\, he worked at New Mexico State University on the Durango Cathedral Microfilming Project and taught courses in colonial Latin America and Mexican history. He has written extensively on the history of the American Southwest and Mexico. \n

DESCRIPTION:Lecture with Dr. Deborah Dorotinsky: The International Exhibition of Popular Arts was one of the events that accompanied the XIX Olympic Games in Mexico 1968 as part of the Cultural Olympiad. Crafts\, folk arts and arte popular were conceived by the Olympic Organizing Committee as one of the things that united all nations.  However\, the games and the cultural program were obscured in Mexico by the repression of the student movement and the Tlatelolco student massacre on October 2nd\, 1968. Discourse on world peace was overshadowed by repression to civil rights movements\, as was happening in many other countries that year. \nMexican cultural agents had long incorporated popular arts as part of their cultural diplomacy strategies: this exhibition was one such example. In 1969\, the Olympic Committee bequeathed the popular arts collection to the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) where it was stored and sporadically exhibited. In 2016 a group of curators and students of UNAM’s graduate Art History program\, organized an exhibition that revised the history of the 1968 popular arts exhibition and highlighted objects from the collection to address problems of cultural diplomacy\, display strategies and shifting definitions of artisanal design\, craft\, folk art and arte popular. This talk will address both iterations of the exhibition and propose some partial results of my ongoing research on arte popular between 1940 and 1970 in Mexico. \nProf. Deborah Dorotinsky holds a B.A. in Anthropology from the University of California\, Berkeley (1985) and an MA and PhD in Art History from Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México\, UNAM (2003). She is a full-time tenured researcher at the Instituto de Investigaciones Estéticas\, UNAM and a professor of historiography of art history\, history of Mexican ethnographic photography and gender and visual cultures 1920-1950 in the Art History Graduate Program at the same university. Her book\, Viaje de sombras: fotografías del Desierto de la Soledad y los indios lacandones en los años cuarenta\, was published by UNAM-Instituto de Investigaciones Estéticas in 2003. She coordinated\, with Álvaro Vázquez\, Danna Levín and Antonio Zirion\, Variaciones sobre cine etnográfico: entre la documentación antropológica y la experimentación estética\, 2017. She has published extensively articles and book chapters both in Spanish and English in different journals and readers.
