SUMMARY:Musica Buena Gallery Concert - Lara Manzanares
DESCRIPTION:Lara Manzanares is a bilingual singer-songwriter of Northern New Mexican heritage. In addition to singing the traditional New Mexican canciones of her sheep-ranching childhood\, Lara also composes her own style of music in both English and Spanish. Through a combination of storytelling and songs both playful and sincere\, Lara draws on her rural New Mexican roots and her urban experiences across the U.S. and abroad as she sings about love\, loss\, a sense of place\, and her own connection to the land. \nAfter several years spent living across the U.S.\, in 2016 Lara returned to New Mexico with her guitar and several original songs in tow. In 2017 she recorded her first original album at Santa Fe’s The Kitchen Sink Studios with producer and sound engineer Jono Manson\, backed by a phenomenal cast of musicians including Mark Clark\, Justin Bransford\, Jono Manson\, Jordan Wax\, Char Rothschild\, Felix Peralta\, and Rafael Herrera. The album\, Land Baby\, contains original songs in both English and Spanish. It received several nominations at the 2018 New Mexico Music Awards and went on to win Album of the Year. \nJust like Lara’s upbringing and New Mexico itself\, her music is a complex yet deeply cohesive mixture of cultures and sounds: deeply rooted but never still\, heartfelt and humorous\, simultaneously ancient and innovative. She continues to explore her New Mexican musical heritage and write and record songs while living in the Albuquerque area. Her most recent single\, “Dear John\,” was nominated as a finalist in the Americana category at the 2019 New Mexico Music Awards. You can listen to her music learn more about Lara by visiting her website\, laramanzanares.com.  \nPhoto credit Philip Wiley \n \n\nAbout the Museum of International Folk Art: http://www.internationalfolkart.org/ \nFounded in 1953 by Florence Dibell Bartlett\, the Museum of International Folk Art’s mission is to foster understanding of the traditional arts to illuminate human creativity and shape a humane world. The museum holds the world’s largest international folk art collection of more than 150\,000 objects from six continents and over 150 nations\, representing a broad range of global artists whose artistic expressions make Santa Fe an international crossroads of culture. For many visitors\, fascination with folk art begins upon seeing the whimsical toys and traditional objects within the Girard Collection. For others\, the international textiles\, ceramics\, carvings and other cultural treasures in the Neutrogena Collection provide the allure.  The museum’s historic and contemporary Latino and Hispano folk art collections\, spanning the Spanish Colonial period to modern-day New Mexico\, reflect how artists respond to their time and place in ways both delightful and sobering. In 2010\, the museum opened the Mark Naylor and Dale Gunn Gallery of Conscience\, where exhibitions encourage visitors to exchange ideas on complex issues of human rights and social justice. \n 706 Camino Lejo\, on Museum Hill in Santa Fe\, NM 87505. (505) 476-1200. \nHours: 10 am to 5 pm closed Mondays November through April\, closed Easter Sunday\, Thanksgiving\, Christmas\, and New Year’s Day. \nFirst Sunday of Every Month is free to NM Residents. Wednesdays are always free for New Mexico Seniors.

SUMMARY:Pueblo Pottery and Embroidery Demonstration with Michael Bancroft (Ohkay Owingeh) and Shawn Tafoya (Santa Clara)
DESCRIPTION:Michael Bancroft is a micaceous pottery instructor who discovered his love of clay in 2004. He feels his inspiration comes from his children’s grandmother\, Mary Sedillo\, and his grandmother\, Emily Povijua\, both of whom made pottery. He has taken and  instructed many art classes at the Poeh Cultural Center.\n \n \n \nWhile also a skilled potter\, Shawn Tafoya will demonstrate embroidery\, another of his passions. Although a traditionalist in terms of materials and technique\, his embroidery is strikingly innovative. Ideas for his work come from different sources\, including nature\, his Pueblo and other tribal groups\, pop culture and his family’s art.

SUMMARY:Friends of History Lecture Series Glorieta Pass and the Plot to Assassinate Colonel John Slough
DESCRIPTION:Historians have largely portrayed Major John Chivington as the hero of Glorieta Pass\, the bold officer whose surprise attack destroyed the rebel supply train and forced the Confederate retreat to Santa Fe.  In contrast\, they have depicted Chivington’s superior\, Colonel John Slough\, as the engagement’s goat\, a “martinet” whose incompetence nearly led to the Union army’s defeat in northern New Mexico Territory. What historians have ignored in their recounting of the 1862 New Mexico campaign was Chivington’s persistent effort to win promotion by assassinating Slough’s character\, perhaps even planning his murder. \nRichard Miller\, the author of Thwarted Ambition: The Life of General John Slough\, will use the background of the 1862 New Mexico campaign to revisit Chivington’s role in the victory at Glorieta Pass and discuss his plot to ruin Slough through insubordination\, anonymous newspaper attacks\, and even threats against the colonel’s life. \nRichard Miller earned a B.A. in history from Carleton College and an M.A. in history from Princeton University.  Although he spent his career in health care management and consulting\, he returned to reading and writing history upon his retirement in 2014. He has served as a president of the Puget Sound Civil War Roundtable\, where he is a frequent presenter\, and has also spoken to the Fort Collins Civil War Roundtable and the Cincinnati Civil War Roundtable.  He lives in Seattle with his wife Karin. \nDonations welcome \nAuditorium event with limited seating-bottled water only please

DESCRIPTION:About the Museum of International Folk Art: http://www.internationalfolkart.org/ \nFounded in 1953 by Florence Dibell Bartlett\, the Museum of International Folk Art’s mission is to foster understanding of the traditional arts to illuminate human creativity and shape a humane world. SUMMARY:Noche De Animas. Tzintzuntzan\, A Documentary Film about Day of The Dead\, 2pm The Noche De Animas film screening begins at 2 pm Vernick Auditorum Noche De Animas. Tzintzuntzan\, Documentary Film
DESCRIPTION:Noche de Animas. Tzintzuntzan is the culmination of a collaborative project of Metamorfosis Documentation Project (represented by Armando Espinosa Prieto and Craig Johnson) and the Centro Cultural Comunitario “Tzintzuntzan” in Tzintzuntzan to document the celebration of Day of the Dead in this community and to explore the relationships between the living and their dead. \nDía de Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a feast day celebrated in indigenous and mestizo communities throughout Latin America. Known as Todos Santos\, Fieles Difuntos (All Souls)\, the celebrations have deep roots in pre-Hispanic indigenous cultures and in pagan and Catholic rituals. Each country\, region and ethnicity has developed different ways of honoring their ancestors\, always based on the same principles of responsibility and reciprocity that honor the role of the dead in the life of their families and communities. \nThe documentary investigates\, as told through the voices of members of the community\, how this agricultural ritual to celebrate the dead – the preparations for the celebration\, the altars\, and the sharing with the dead – strengthens ties of family\, spiritual kinship and community. \nSpecifically highlighted in the film is the cultural legacy of the ancient P’urhepechas. In the celebration of Noche de Animas\, family and community are regenerated in a ritual of cultural unity that features the generous sharing of abundance\, evoking a feeling of belonging and well-being. \n Metamorfosis Documentation Project \nMetamorfosis Documentation Project (MDP) is a local nonprofit organization based on a belief in the richness and importance of cultural traditions\, focusing on cross cultural rituals and dances in the Americas. \nThrough projects with mestizo and indigenous communities\, MDP\, in collaboration with their community museums\, documents and supports rituals and dances in their own cultural settings and shares them with a wider audience\, fostering an understanding of distinct cultures. \nThese collaborative projects typically involve three phases: 1) the documenting of the tradition through filming and interviews\, resulting in a documentary film\, with rights to reproduction and sale of the film being gifted to the Community Museum; 2) a related project sponsored by MDP in direct support to the community; and 3) public presentation of the results of the project including documentary film screenings\, submissions to film festivals\, lectures\, photographic exhibitions\, web presentations\, and related art works that offer opportunities for wider audiences to experience an inside look at cultures and community rituals markedly different from their own. \nExecutive Director Armando Espinosa says the mission of MDP is “to help to protect\, preserve and promote traditional cultures in the Americas.” \nMDP began working with indigenous communities in the late 1990’s\, collaborating on a small scale project with a small Rarámuri (Tarahumara) community in Copper Canyon in Chihuahua\, Mexico to document their Semana Santa (Holy Week) celebration. \nBeginning in 2007\, MDP has completed collaborations on four large-scale documentary project \nThe Day of the Dead Tzintzuntzan Project\, MDP’s current project\, involved a collaboration with the Centro Cultural Comunitario “Tzintzuntzan” (Tzintzuntzan Community Cultural Center) to document the traditional celebration of Noche de Animas in the P’urhépecha community of Tzintzuntzan\, Michoacán. \nThe first phase of this Project again included MDP’s apprentice program\, with two apprentices chosen by the local Tzintzuntzan Preparatory School who participated in the filming and interviewing of community members. In an additional collaboration in this phase\, with support from New Mexico Film Resource\, the Santa Fe Community College Film Department sent two students to work with MDP as apprentices during the filming of the actual Day of the Dead celebrations. This phase culminated in the production of the documentary\, Noche de Animas. Tzintzuntzan. \nIn the community support portion of this Project\, MDP and the Centro Cultural Comunitario “Tzintzuntzan” collaborated to offer a workshop\, “Techniques of Filming and Editing Cultural Documentaries”\, to nine members of the community in an effort to stimulate and prepare members of the community to document their own cultural traditions. Workshop participants filmed and produced three short documentaries focused on different cultural traditions of the community\, which were then screened for the community. \nMDP is now in the third phase of this Project\, and is presenting Noche de Animas. Tzintzuntzan in museums and universities in Mexico and the United States.

SUMMARY:Alcoves 2020 #2 ON DISPLAY OCTOBER 19\, 2019 - FEBRUARY 9\, 2020
DESCRIPTION:The alcove shows continue the tradition began in 1917 of exhibiting works made by living artists.  These small\, one-person exhibitions\, called alcoves\, were held in the original gallery space through the 1950s\, resuming in the mid-1980s and again in the early 1990s and 2012. Alcoves 2020 continues this tradition with a series of six exhibitions featuring the work of artists living in New Mexico right now. These artist-centered showcases feature new ideas\, artists at all stages of their careers and artwork that is being made by artists from across New Mexico. \nAlcoves 2020 #2: October 19\, 2020 – February 9\, 2020 \nJen Pack\, Heather McGill\, Daniel McCoy\, Marietta Patricia Leis\, Sarah Stolar \nJen Pack creates her prismatic string and fiber art to satisfy a compulsion. Her work is located in a transitional zone between color and form\, and painting and sculpture. Pack says of her work: “I have always been profoundly responsive to color and the sensations color can provoke. My work has been described as an artistic oxymoron: both loud and quiet\, solid and transparent\, hand-made and precise\, delicate and aggressive\, exuberant and restrained\, formal and emotional. It is a reflection of me\, an artist of blended culture who is both loud and quiet\, urban and rural\, delicate and aggressive\, masculine and feminine\, adventurous and routine.”  Born in Astoria\, Oregon in 1976\, Pack received a BFA from Art Center college of Design in Pasadena\, California\, in 1997 and an MLIS from San Jose State University in 2008. She is a librarian as well as an artist. Jen Pack currently resides in Silver City\, New Mexico.  \nExhibiting in museums and galleries nationally and internationally since 1984\, Heather McGill has a unique ability and art making practice where opposing concepts come together and fuse into one successful union: hand-made and machine-made\, low art and high art\, nature and high tech\, feminine and masculine. The laser cut paper she uses is exquisitely airbrushed using inexpensive readymade lace and textiles by the yard for stencils. These patterns are mostly from the natural world\, including flowers\, butterflies\, spider webs and the like. They are also evocative of the 1960s and 70s trippy psychedelic patterns and artworks. These spectacular elements are then assembled and layered on a similarly painted backer board drilled with hundreds of holes so that the collaged pieces can be sewn together using beads for additional support and ornamentation. Heather McGill received her MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute\, where she refined her training in sculpture. McGill’s 26-year teaching career at the Cranbrook Academy of Art in Detroit where the automation and mass production of automobiles\, development of novel plastics\, resins\, and other materials along with the spectacular autobody and paint colors and lacquers has had a long-lasting impact on her practice\, and has become a recurring theme influencing her processes and work. \nDaniel McCoy Jr.’s father was an Irish biker and his mother a member of the Muscogee (Creek) Tribe of Oklahoma. His paintings bear influences from both sides\, the aesthetic of psychedelic counterculture melding easily with the modernist flat style of mid-century Native painters. The campy color palette and frantic\, wavy line-work that the younger McCoy (Citizen Potawatomi Nation) perfected easily lend to comic\, even ironic\, meditations on everything from Aristotle’s Great Chain of Being to Allsup’s famed hot sauce. McCoy attended the Institute of American Indian Arts in 1993\, and continues to be inspired by the vast disparity of creative expression he witnessed there. Pop culture\, Americana\, and punk rock find common ground in his work. His experiences vary just a widely as his influences\, and each\, it seems\, comes into play in his paintings\, including a stint as a sign and billboard painter. Sign painting gifted McCoy an affinity for lettering\, and the ultra-realism of the billboard business drove him to go back to something organic and imperfect: cartooning. A cartoonish style set McCoy apart because at the time Native art was still dominated by realism. Since coming to New Mexico for college\, McCoy continues to live and work in Santa Fe. \nMarietta Patricia Leis says of her work: “My work encompasses multiple media\, including paintings\, drawings\, sculpture\, and installation. There is always an element of the sensory in my art- a texture\, a color\, a deep space- something to engage the senses of the viewer. The intention of the work is to contemplate boundaries\, edges\, and limits. My abstract color fields run the risk of invisibility\, but silence\, patience\, and deep listening is fundamental to the satisfaction of the viewer.” Marie6tta Patricia Leis was born in Newark\, New Jersey. She has worked as a professional artist for 30+ years. She has lived in New York\, Los Angeles\, Perugia (Italy)\, and now lives and works in New Mexico/ She is a painter whose work has evolved from very complex abstractions to reductive color fields inspired by my Eastern Studies and nature. She has participated in Artist Residencies both in the US and abroad. Leis has shown her work abroad in Thailand\, China\, Portugal\, and England\, as well as in the US in museums and galleries. Private and public collections hold her work. She has earned her MFA from the University of New Mexico. \nSarah Stolar is an interdisciplinary artist who works from a strong psychological and female perspective. The breadth of her work includes drawing\, painting\, multi-media installation\, film\, video and performance art. She also works collaboratively with notable performance artists and non-profit organizations. She has worked on two feature-length films\, curated five gallery and museum exhibitions\, and created wearable art for international performances. Sarah grew up in her mother’s art studio\, received a BFA in Painting from the Art Academy of Cincinnati\, and an MFA in New Genres from the San Francisco Art Institute. Selected exhibitions include the Donau Festival\, Krems\, Austria; Anti-Contemporary Art Festival\, Kuopio\, Finland; Currents 2011\, Santa Fe; 53rd Venice Biennale; and a solo exhibition at BGMoCA\, Uruguay. A long-time educator\, Sarah is currently contributing faculty at the Santa Fe University of Art & Design and the Chair of the Art Department at University of New Mexico – Taos. \nAlcoves 20/20 is supported in part by the Friends of Contemporary Art + Photography.

SUMMARY:Women in Archaeology at the Center for NM Archaeology
DESCRIPTION:Please note this exhibit is on view at the Center for New Mexico Archaeology\, at 7 Old Cochiti Road\, off the Caja del Rio exit of 599. \nThis exhibit highlights the work of 11 pioneer women in archaeology who worked in the American Southwest as well as touches on some major early and modern contributors to archaeology throughout the world.  \n“The women highlighted in this exhibition made numerous contributions to their field and helped educate many students who went on to pursue careers in archaeology. Through their work\, they have turned archaeology into the field it is\, leaving a lasting legacy for the future of the discipline\,” said exhibit co-curator Emily Hurley. “Early on in our field women were discouraged from pursing advanced degrees and conducting field work. By highlighting the work of 11 pioneer women in archaeology who worked here in the American Southwest\, our hope to help inspire future generations of women to pursue a career in archaeology.” \nFor a printable map to CNMA\, follow this link. \n
