SUMMARY:Yōkai: Ghosts & Demons of Japan- Public Opening Exhibit Opening
DESCRIPTION:The Museum of International Folk Art’s exhibit features scroll paintings\, woodblock prints\, and kimonos as well as costumes\, puppets\, and masks used in classical theatrical performances. In addition\, the exhibit will include demon festivals such as the Ushioni festival of Uwajima and the Namahage festival of Oga. Contemporary folk art includes works from master artists of Noh masks and Awa Ningnyo Jururi (puppets). While many of these items come from the existing permanent collection\, the museum will collaborate with major institutions including the newly opened Yumoto Koichi Memorial Yōkai Museum in Miyoshi City (Hiroshima Prefecture). The museum will also partner with artist Kono Junya of Kyoto-based  art collective\, Hyakuyôbako (“Box of 100 Yokai”) to create an immersive obake yashiki\, (a Japanese-style ghost house). \nThe Museum of International Folk Art brings yōkai to the United States so that audiences might glean insight and an appreciation for Japanese art and literature\, as well as its influence on contemporary Japanese popular culture. Through Yōkai: Ghosts and Demons of Japan\, museum guests may contemplate what pop-culture looked like centuries ago\, and why contemporary entertainment carried these supernatural figures into current media. Perhaps\, like the people of 16th century Japan\, today’s society still seeks to explain the strange and unknown pieces of the human experience. \nLearn more about the exhibit here:  \nhttp://www.internationalfolkart.org/exhibition/3810/yokai-ghosts-demons-of-japan \n  \nAbout the Museum of International Folk Art: \nhttp://www.internationalfolkart.org/ \nFounded in 1953 by Florence Dibell Bartlett\, the Museum of International Folk Art’s mission is to foster understanding of the traditional arts to illuminate human creativity and shape a humane world. The museum holds the world’s largest international folk art collection of more than 150\,000 objects from six continents and over 150 nations\, representing a broad range of global artists whose artistic expressions make Santa Fe an international crossroads of culture. For many visitors\, fascination with folk art begins upon seeing the whimsical toys and traditional objects within the Girard Collection. For others\, the international textiles\, ceramics\, carvings and other cultural treasures in the Neutrogena Collection provide the allure.  The museum’s historic and contemporary Latino and Hispano folk art collections\, spanning the Spanish Colonial period to modern-day New Mexico\, reflect how artists respond to their time and place in ways both delightful and sobering. In 2010\, the museum opened the Mark Naylor and Dale Gunn Gallery of Conscience\, where exhibitions encourage visitors to exchange ideas on complex issues of human rights and social justice. \n 706 Camino Lejo\, on Museum Hill in Santa Fe\, NM 87505. (505) 476-1200. \nHours: 10 am to 5 pm daily\, May through October; closed Mondays November through April\, Thanksgiving\, Christmas\, and New Year’s Day. First Sunday of Every Month is free to NM Residents.

SUMMARY:Friends of History Lecture Series The 1776 Expedition of Dominguez and Escalante
DESCRIPTION:In the Summer of 1776\, two Franciscan Friars left Santa Fe on a journey to find an overland route to the only other Spanish settlement : Monterey\, California. Although they never achieved this goal they instead circumnavigated the Colorado Plateau\, created the first map of this region and documented the customs and living situations of the Ute Indians who occupied the regions north of Santa Fe and as far west as the Great Salt Lake. The journey covered 1800 miles and took six months. \nOver a five year period Greg Mac Gregor and Siegfreid Halus (now deceased)   retraced this route and photographed the terrain and legacy of this expedition. \nThe photographs in the lecture are from the book : In Search of Dominguez and Escalante (Museum of New Mexico Press) by Mac Gregor and Halus and will be on exhibition at the Palace of the Governors \, Santa Fe\, during the year 2020. \nGreg Mac Gregor is Professor Emeritus of Art and Photography from the California State University \, East Bay. Past photo projects of trans- Mississippi exploration and travel include :The California Emigrant trail of 1841-1870;   The Oregon Emigrant Trail;   The Lewis and Clark Expedition; The Mormon Emigrant Trail; and The Transcontinental Railroad of 1869. He has had eighty exhibitions of these projects both domestic and foreign\, and published four books. \nThe late Siegfreid Halus \, was former professor of Photography at Tufts University . He also was the director of the Art department at the Santa Fe Community College and the author ( along with Marie Romero Cash) of Living Shrines : Home Alters of New Mexico (Museum of New Mexico Press). As an exhibiting photographer he had extensive national and international exposure and authored many articles on art and photography. \n www.friends-of-history.org \n  \n

DESCRIPTION:About the Museum of International Folk Art: http://www.internationalfolkart.org/ \nFounded in 1953 by Florence Dibell Bartlett\, the Museum of International Folk Art’s mission is to foster understanding of the traditional arts to illuminate human creativity and shape a humane world. SUMMARY:Picturing Passion: Artists Interpret the Penitente Brotherhood
DESCRIPTION:As artist arrived in New Mexico over the course of the twentieth century they encountered no shortage of inspirational material. From the striking landscape\, and regional architecture to native ceremony\, the Southwest often proved exotic for artists who came from a predominantly eastern\, protestant background.  One regional community that captured the attention and imaginations of artists were the Penitent Brotherhood\, Picturing Passion brings together the work of artists who took on the penitent traditions as source material. The exhibition illustrates how artists who were new to the Southwest in the early part of the 20th century looked to Moradas\, Penitente processions\, traditions\, and material culture as source material for their work and as a distinctive feature of New Mexican culture.  It also examines the myths and stereotypes that have developed from sensationalizing the group’s beliefs and practices and endeavors to create a space to address these misconceptions.

SUMMARY:Hardship\, Greed\, and Sorrow: An Officer’s Photo Album of 1866 New Mexico Territory
DESCRIPTION:In the aftermath of the Civil War\, New Mexico Territory endured painful years of hardship and ongoing strife. During this turbulent period\, a U.S. military officer stationed in the territory assembled an album of photographs\, a series of still shots taken by one or more anonymous photographers. Now\, some 150 years later\, this remarkable volume reproduces the anonymous officer’s “souvenir album” in its totality.  \nOffering an important glimpse of the American Southwest in the mid-1860s\, the photo album opens with a thoughtful foreword by Jennifer Nez Denetdale\, who considers the varied and lingering impacts that settlement\, conquest\, and nineteenth-century photography had on the Apaches and Navajos. In her insightful introduction accompanying the photographs\, curator and scholar Devorah Romanek places the photographs in historical context and explains their unusual provenance. As she points out\, the album integrates a number of important themes in connection to the Civil War and Reconstruction periods\, including the French intervention in New Mexico and the internment of Navajos at the Bosque Redondo Indian Reservation. \nThe story of the album’s provenance reads like a mystery: some loose ends remain untied and some questions remain unanswered. In addition to containing what may be the earliest extant photographs of Navajo Indians\, the album features both studio and field images of U.S. Army officers\, Mexican politicians\, and various sites throughout New Mexico.  \nAccording to Romanek\, a number of the album’s photographs have appeared in other publications but without much attention to their original context or purpose. \nThis compelling book reveals what we know about the collection\, its compiler\, and the photographer—or photographers—who captured such a fraught and complex moment in the history of the American Southwest. \nDevorah Romanek is an anthropologist and Visual Culture expert and is currently Curator of Exhibits at the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology at the University of New Mexico. \nDaniel Kosharek\, previously the Photo Curator at the New Mexico History Museum\, Palace of the Governors\, Santa Fe\, NM. \nJennifer Nez Dennetdale is Associate Professor of American Studies at the University of New Mexico and the author of Reclaiming Diné History: The Legacies of Navajo Chief Manuelito and Juanita. \nHannah Abelbeck is the Photo Archivist with the New Mexico History Museum\, Santa Fe\, NM. \nOn the cover: “The Belle of the Navajos\,” Navajo girl en route to or at Fort Sumner\, New Mexico Territory\, ca. September 1866. Palace of the Governors\, New Mexico History Museum\, Santa Fe (PoG 038199).

SUMMARY:Apollo 12 Anniversary Celebrate with the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science
DESCRIPTION:November 20\, 2019 is the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 12 astronaut’s second day on the lunar surface. To celebrate this historic event\, take part in a truly unique experience as you “walk on the Moon” (on a giant lunar floor map). The New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science is the only place in New Mexico and one of only a few places in the country to have this giant moon map on loan from NASA. We are the first to have this geological lunar map after its appearance on the National Mall in Washington DC to celebrate the Apollo 11 Anniversary. New Mexico has long been involved in studying the geology of the Moon\, using New Mexico’s volcanoes as analogs to lunar volcanism. So…come walk on the moon… Hands-on activities for all ages will include virtual reality apps based on the Apollo missions. \n\n \n\n \nEvent is included with Museum admission

SUMMARY:Book Reading and Signing: Norma Elia Cantú\, Cabañuelas
DESCRIPTION:Salón Ortega \nNorma Elia Cantú will read from her new novel\, Cabañuelas (University of New Mexico Press\, 2019)\, the successor to her award-winning Canícula: Snapshots of a Girlhood en la Frontera\, which chronicles her childhood experiences on the border. Nena leaves Laredo\, Texas\, and moves to Madrid\, Spain\, to research the historical roots of traditional fiestas in Laredo. Immersing herself in post-Franco Spain and its rich history\, its food\, music\, and fiestas\, Nena finds herself falling for Paco\, a Spaniard. Nena’s research and experiences teach her about who she is\, where she comes from\, and what is important to her. As her work comes to a close\, Nena must decide where she can best be true to her entire self: in Spain with Paco or in Laredo\, her home\, where her job and family await her return. After reading\, Cantú will talk about the craft of writing a novel—in celebration of National Novel Writing Month (November). \nThis event is free and open to the public \nPresented in conjunction with the University of New Mexico Press

Green\, Martin Krause\, Thomas Leech\, and David Skolkin. \nIn A Modern Rendering: The Color Woodcuts of Gustave Baumann\, A Catalogue Raisonné will be available for purchase at the New Mexico Museum of Art Shop on the day of the event. \nAbout the panelists: \nGala Chamberlain has worked at the Annex Galleries for forty years and is co-owner with her husband\, Daniel Lienau. The gallery has represented the Baumann estate since 1973 and Gala worked on the Baumann catalogue raisonné for the past thirty-five years. Ann Baumann asked her to be her successor trustee in 2006 and Gala has served as the Trustee of the Ann Baumann Trust since Ann’s death in 2011. The Ann Baumann Trust also provided funding for the 2014 publication Gustave Baumann and Friends: Artists Cards from Holidays Past\, funding for the exhibition\, Gustave Baumann in California\, and funding for the Gustave Baumann Symposium 2018. \nNancy E. Green is the Gale and Ira Drukier Curator of European and American Art\, Prints and Drawings\, at the Herbert F. Johnson Museum\, Cornell University\, where she has worked for over thirty-three years. Author of several award-winning publications including Arthur Wesley Dow and His Influence; Susan Rothenberg: Prints and Drawing; Byrdcliffe: An American Arts and Crafts Colony; A Room of Their Own: Bloomsbury Art in American Collections; and\, most recently Japan America: Points of Contact\, 1876-1970\, she is currently working on an exhibition that examines the revolution in teaching art at the turn of the last century. \nThomas Leech is the Curator of the Press at the Palace of the Governors\, and has more than 40 years’ experience in printing\, papermaking\, and related book arts. He was a recipient of the Santa Fe Mayor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts\, and under his direction the Palace Press received the Carl Hertzog Award for Excellence in Book Design and the Edgar Lee Hewett Award from the New Mexico Association of Museums. He is co-author of Gustave Baumann and Friends: Artist Cards from Holidays Past\, and his essay on Baumann’s printing practices is included in the Gustave Baumann catalogue raisonné. \nMartin Krause was for thirty-nine years the Curator of Prints\, Drawings and Photographs at the Indianapolis Museum of Art\, the earliest institutional collector and second largest repository of the works of Gustave Baumann. Krause is coauthor of Gustave Baumann: Nearer to Art and editor of The Autobiography of Gustave Baumann and Gustave Baumann: Views of Brown County. \nDavid Skolkin‘s career began in New York City working in the studio of one of the top book designers in the publishing industry. While in New York he designed and art directed book and exhibition projects for most of the major art book publishers as well as museums\, galleries and art institutions in New York and around the country. When he couldn’t resist the landscapes of New Mexico any longer he moved to Santa Fe continuing to serve clients around the country. His work encompasses all aspects of publishing and graphic design\, with a concentration in book design and production\, the latter also involving extensive on-press supervision with printers in Europe and Asia. In addition to his freelance work he is also the Art and Production Director for the Museum of New Mexico Press\, the book imprint for the State system of museums spanning native\, folk\, and fine arts. He is also co-founder of Radius Books\, a non-profit art book publisher based in Santa Fe. \nAbout the Book: \nIn A Modern Rendering: The Color Woodcuts of Gustave Baumann\, A Catalogue Raisonné by Gala Chamberlain documents 190 editioned works\, including color woodcuts and early etchings and color linocuts\, and an extensive body of printed ephemera created during the years 1905 to 1970. The introductory essay\, “Deftness\, Soul\, and a Gypsy Instinct: the Creative Art of Gustave Baumann\,” was written by Nancy E. Green\, Curator of European and American Art\, Herbert F. Johnson Museum of Art\, Cornell University in Ithaca\, New York. With her history of research\, exhibitions\, and writing on American printmakers\, Nancy was the perfect scholar for this task. Thomas Leech\, director of the Press at the Palace of the Governors\, New Mexico History Museum\, Santa Fe\, is a curator\, paper maker\, and letterpress printer\, and he curated a permanent exhibition of Baumann’s studio\, which includes his vials of dried inks\, printing press\, printing papers\, tools\, etc. With his amazing knowledge of paper\, presses\, printing\, and wood\, Thomas was the perfect scholar craftsman to write the essay “The Problems of a Regular Guy\,” on Baumann’s techniques. Martin Krause\, Curator Emeritus of Prints and Drawings\, Indianapolis Museum of Art at Newfields\, has a long history with Baumann’s color woodcuts and has extensive knowledge of the artist in Brown County and New Mexico. Marty co-authored Gustave Baumann: Nearer to Art and further edited two books\, The Autobiography of Gustave Baumann and Gustave Baumann: Views of Brown County\, and he graciously wrote the foreword for this book. Gala Chamberlain also wrote the essays on Baumann’s studio practices\, including on the papers used over his career and another on the history of his chops and their variations. The book is enriched by numerous never-before-published photographs of or by Gustave Baumann. \nTime: Panel discussion: 1:00 to 2:30 pm. Book signing: 2:45 pm to 4:00 pm \nLocation: The New Mexico Museum of Art\, 107 West Palace\, Santa Fe\, NM \nTicket Information: $10 per person for panel discussion. SUMMARY:Musica Buena Gallery Concert - Lara Manzanares
DESCRIPTION:Lara Manzanares is a bilingual singer-songwriter of Northern New Mexican heritage. In addition to singing the traditional New Mexican canciones of her sheep-ranching childhood\, Lara also composes her own style of music in both English and Spanish. Through a combination of storytelling and songs both playful and sincere\, Lara draws on her rural New Mexican roots and her urban experiences across the U.S. and abroad as she sings about love\, loss\, a sense of place\, and her own connection to the land. \nAfter several years spent living across the U.S.\, in 2016 Lara returned to New Mexico with her guitar and several original songs in tow. In 2017 she recorded her first original album at Santa Fe’s The Kitchen Sink Studios with producer and sound engineer Jono Manson\, backed by a phenomenal cast of musicians including Mark Clark\, Justin Bransford\, Jono Manson\, Jordan Wax\, Char Rothschild\, Felix Peralta\, and Rafael Herrera. The album\, Land Baby\, contains original songs in both English and Spanish. It received several nominations at the 2018 New Mexico Music Awards and went on to win Album of the Year. \nJust like Lara’s upbringing and New Mexico itself\, her music is a complex yet deeply cohesive mixture of cultures and sounds: deeply rooted but never still\, heartfelt and humorous\, simultaneously ancient and innovative. She continues to explore her New Mexican musical heritage and write and record songs while living in the Albuquerque area. Her most recent single\, “Dear John\,” was nominated as a finalist in the Americana category at the 2019 New Mexico Music Awards. You can listen to her music learn more about Lara by visiting her website\, laramanzanares.com.  \nPhoto credit Philip Wiley \n \n\nAbout the Museum of International Folk Art: http://www.internationalfolkart.org/ \nFounded in 1953 by Florence Dibell Bartlett\, the Museum of International Folk Art’s mission is to foster understanding of the traditional arts to illuminate human creativity and shape a humane world. \nHours: 10 am to 5 pm closed Mondays November through April\, closed Easter Sunday\, Thanksgiving\, Christmas\, and New Year’s Day. \nFirst Sunday of Every Month is free to NM Residents. Wednesdays are always free for New Mexico Seniors.

SUMMARY:Pueblo Pottery and Embroidery Demonstration with Michael Bancroft (Ohkay Owingeh) and Shawn Tafoya (Santa Clara)
DESCRIPTION:Michael Bancroft is a micaceous pottery instructor who discovered his love of clay in 2004. He feels his inspiration comes from his children’s grandmother\, Mary Sedillo\, and his grandmother\, Emily Povijua\, both of whom made pottery. He has taken and  instructed many art classes at the Poeh Cultural Center.\n \n \n \nWhile also a skilled potter\, Shawn Tafoya will demonstrate embroidery\, another of his passions.
