SUMMARY:Revealing Untold Stories of Chaco Canyon: Archaeocosmology Lecture on solar and lunar astronomy
DESCRIPTION:  \nAnna Sofaer\, Robert Weiner and Richard Friedman                                                                              \nThursday\, December 12\,  2019  • 6:30pm – 8pm                              \n  \nAnna Sofaer\, and colleagues Richard Friedman and Robert Weiner\, will share latest research findings\, revealing the extent of the Chaco culture across an area the size of Ohio. They examine the source of that powerful reach from the arid center of Chaco Canyon.  They explore through new three dimensional computer modeling the complex developments of Pueblo Bonito\, considered the most important center of the culture: it’s astounding 800 rooms built up to four stories\, precise solar alignments\, and vast quantity of ritual offerings. Objects such as macaws\, cacao\, copper bells\, and gambling pieces point to an intense ceremonial life and dynamic relationship with cultures of the tropics. Animations reveal Pueblo Bonito’s great number of kivas\, built and rebuilt through its 300 year history. Pueblo Bonito’s intriguing geometric formations\, united with its solar alignments\, suggest significant clues to the intellectual powers and interests of the Chaco architects\, geometers and astronomers.  These findings open a wider window on the American Southwest\, with comparisons to cosmology centers around the ancient world. This new research also includes the use of LiDAR technology to document enigmatic Chaco “roads\,” many of which connect the Great Houses with Great Kivas while others relate to striking features of the natural landscape and astronomical directions. \nIn 1977\, Anna Sofaer rediscovered the “Sun Dagger” in Chaco Canyon. Through her non-profit Solstice Project\, she has dedicated herself to collaborative research and education on the Chaco culture. Richard Friedman\, San Juan College\, is an expert in GIS and has integrated new aerial technologies with ground surveying. Robert Weiner\, Ph.D. student at Univ. Colorado\, Boulder\, has focused his research on Chacoan “roads” and written extensively on Mesoamerican objects found in Chaco Canyon. \nThere will be an opportunity to purchase books or videos and have them signed. This Museum’s one-of-a-kind interactive exhibit of the sun dagger\, produced by the Solstice Project\, will be open for viewing in our Space Science wing. \nCost: $8 nonmembers\, $7 members\, $5 students. Preregistration is encouraged or tickets can be purchased at the door the evening of the event (if seats are available). Go to www.nmnaturalhistory.org. Questions: jayne.aubele@state.nm.us \n  \n

SUMMARY:Pueblo Pottery Demonstration Series with Lorraine Gala Lewis (Laguna/Taos/Hopi)
DESCRIPTION:When she began working with clay\, Gala Lewis embraced a contemporary style\, but eventually incorporated figurative form into her work. Later\, after studying Pre-Columbian art forms\, she delved into that time period. “The work is a true reflection of self\, what was felt by that individual at that time in the environment\,” notes Gala Lewis. “The evolution of shape\, form and design reflected changes of lifestyle.”

SUMMARY:Yōkai: Ghosts & Demons of Japan- Public Opening Exhibit Opening
DESCRIPTION:The Museum of International Folk Art’s exhibit features scroll paintings\, woodblock prints\, and kimonos as well as costumes\, puppets\, and masks used in classical theatrical performances. In addition\, the exhibit will include demon festivals such as the Ushioni festival of Uwajima and the Namahage festival of Oga. Contemporary folk art includes works from master artists of Noh masks and Awa Ningnyo Jururi (puppets). While many of these items come from the existing permanent collection\, the museum will collaborate with major institutions including the newly opened Yumoto Koichi Memorial Yōkai Museum in Miyoshi City (Hiroshima Prefecture). The museum will also partner with artist Kono Junya of Kyoto-based  art collective\, Hyakuyôbako (“Box of 100 Yokai”) to create an immersive obake yashiki\, (a Japanese-style ghost house). \nThe Museum of International Folk Art brings yōkai to the United States so that audiences might glean insight and an appreciation for Japanese art and literature\, as well as its influence on contemporary Japanese popular culture. Through Yōkai: Ghosts and Demons of Japan\, museum guests may contemplate what pop-culture looked like centuries ago\, and why contemporary entertainment carried these supernatural figures into current media. Perhaps\, like the people of 16th century Japan\, today’s society still seeks to explain the strange and unknown pieces of the human experience. \nLearn more about the exhibit here:  \nhttp://www.internationalfolkart.org/exhibition/3810/yokai-ghosts-demons-of-japan \n  \nAbout the Museum of International Folk Art: \nhttp://www.internationalfolkart.org/ \nFounded in 1953 by Florence Dibell Bartlett\, the Museum of International Folk Art’s mission is to foster understanding of the traditional arts to illuminate human creativity and shape a humane world. The museum holds the world’s largest international folk art collection of more than 150\,000 objects from six continents and over 150 nations\, representing a broad range of global artists whose artistic expressions make Santa Fe an international crossroads of culture. For many visitors\, fascination with folk art begins upon seeing the whimsical toys and traditional objects within the Girard Collection. For others\, the international textiles\, ceramics\, carvings and other cultural treasures in the Neutrogena Collection provide the allure.  The museum’s historic and contemporary Latino and Hispano folk art collections\, spanning the Spanish Colonial period to modern-day New Mexico\, reflect how artists respond to their time and place in ways both delightful and sobering. In 2010\, the museum opened the Mark Naylor and Dale Gunn Gallery of Conscience\, where exhibitions encourage visitors to exchange ideas on complex issues of human rights and social justice. \n 706 Camino Lejo\, on Museum Hill in Santa Fe\, NM 87505. SUMMARY:Friends of History Lecture Series The 1776 Expedition of Dominguez and Escalante
DESCRIPTION:In the Summer of 1776\, two Franciscan Friars left Santa Fe on a journey to find an overland route to the only other Spanish settlement : Monterey\, California. Although they never achieved this goal they instead circumnavigated the Colorado Plateau\, created the first map of this region and documented the customs and living situations of the Ute Indians who occupied the regions north of Santa Fe and as far west as the Great Salt Lake. The journey covered 1800 miles and took six months. \nOver a five year period Greg Mac Gregor and Siegfreid Halus (now deceased)   retraced this route and photographed the terrain and legacy of this expedition. \nThe photographs in the lecture are from the book : In Search of Dominguez and Escalante (Museum of New Mexico Press) by Mac Gregor and Halus and will be on exhibition at the Palace of the Governors \, Santa Fe\, during the year 2020. \nGreg Mac Gregor is Professor Emeritus of Art and Photography from the California State University \, East Bay. Past photo projects of trans- Mississippi exploration and travel include :The California Emigrant trail of 1841-1870;   The Oregon Emigrant Trail;   The Lewis and Clark Expedition; The Mormon Emigrant Trail; and The Transcontinental Railroad of 1869. He has had eighty exhibitions of these projects both domestic and foreign\, and published four books. \nThe late Siegfreid Halus \, was former professor of Photography at Tufts University . He also was the director of the Art department at the Santa Fe Community College and the author ( along with Marie Romero Cash) of Living Shrines : Home Alters of New Mexico (Museum of New Mexico Press). As an exhibiting photographer he had extensive national and international exposure and authored many articles on art and photography. \n www.friends-of-history.org \n  \n

SUMMARY:Picturing Passion: Artists Interpret the Penitente Brotherhood
DESCRIPTION:As artist arrived in New Mexico over the course of the twentieth century they encountered no shortage of inspirational material. From the striking landscape\, and regional architecture to native ceremony\, the Southwest often proved exotic for artists who came from a predominantly eastern\, protestant background.  One regional community that captured the attention and imaginations of artists were the Penitent Brotherhood\, Picturing Passion brings together the work of artists who took on the penitent traditions as source material. The exhibition illustrates how artists who were new to the Southwest in the early part of the 20th century looked to Moradas\, Penitente processions\, traditions\, and material culture as source material for their work and as a distinctive feature of New Mexican culture.  It also examines the myths and stereotypes that have developed from sensationalizing the group’s beliefs and practices and endeavors to create a space to address these misconceptions.

SUMMARY:Hardship\, Greed\, and Sorrow: An Officer’s Photo Album of 1866 New Mexico Territory
DESCRIPTION:In the aftermath of the Civil War\, New Mexico Territory endured painful years of hardship and ongoing strife. During this turbulent period\, a U.S. military officer stationed in the territory assembled an album of photographs\, a series of still shots taken by one or more anonymous photographers. Now\, some 150 years later\, this remarkable volume reproduces the anonymous officer’s “souvenir album” in its totality.  \nOffering an important glimpse of the American Southwest in the mid-1860s\, the photo album opens with a thoughtful foreword by Jennifer Nez Denetdale\, who considers the varied and lingering impacts that settlement\, conquest\, and nineteenth-century photography had on the Apaches and Navajos. In her insightful introduction accompanying the photographs\, curator and scholar Devorah Romanek places the photographs in historical context and explains their unusual provenance. As she points out\, the album integrates a number of important themes in connection to the Civil War and Reconstruction periods\, including the French intervention in New Mexico and the internment of Navajos at the Bosque Redondo Indian Reservation. \nThe story of the album’s provenance reads like a mystery: some loose ends remain untied and some questions remain unanswered. In addition to containing what may be the earliest extant photographs of Navajo Indians\, the album features both studio and field images of U.S. Army officers\, Mexican politicians\, and various sites throughout New Mexico.  \nAccording to Romanek\, a number of the album’s photographs have appeared in other publications but without much attention to their original context or purpose. \nThis compelling book reveals what we know about the collection\, its compiler\, and the photographer—or photographers—who captured such a fraught and complex moment in the history of the American Southwest. \nDevorah Romanek is an anthropologist and Visual Culture expert and is currently Curator of Exhibits at the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology at the University of New Mexico. \nDaniel Kosharek\, previously the Photo Curator at the New Mexico History Museum\, Palace of the Governors\, Santa Fe\, NM. \nJennifer Nez Dennetdale is Associate Professor of American Studies at the University of New Mexico and the author of Reclaiming Diné History: The Legacies of Navajo Chief Manuelito and Juanita. \nHannah Abelbeck is the Photo Archivist with the New Mexico History Museum\, Santa Fe\, NM. \nOn the cover: “The Belle of the Navajos\,” Navajo girl en route to or at Fort Sumner\, New Mexico Territory\, ca. September 1866. Palace of the Governors\, New Mexico History Museum\, Santa Fe (PoG 038199).
