SUMMARY:Summer High School Photography Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This summer\, we are offering a new\, two-week photography program for high school students. Starting on July 24th and ending August 4th\, this program is designed to treat the art of photography seriously\, regardless of what kind of camera you are using. Professional DSLRs to cell phone cameras\, all are welcome. Students will learn\, both in the lighting studio and out in the world\, to take control of their cameras and make images that are uniquely their own. The class will explore basic but powerful digital editing tools and concepts. They will also get to spend time exploring photographs in the Museum to learn how other photographers have composed a frame\, told a story\, and interpreted the world around them. \nThis program is free due to the generous support of its sponsor\, Caroline Burnett. Space is limited to 12 students\, and registration is required. \n  \nEmail Chris Nail\, chris.nail@dca.nm.gov\, to register

SUMMARY:Let’s Take A Look with Curators Every Third Wednesday of the Month. 12:00 pm through 2:00 pm
DESCRIPTION:During Let’s Take a Look\, curators from The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture and The Laboratory of Anthropology wait in the lobby to look at your treasures. They will attempt to identify and explain any artifact or historic object presented to them. While our curators prefer to work with objects from the Southwest\, they are willing to take a look at anything you might bring in. If they cannot identify an object an attempt will be made to find someone who can! Sometimes\, the lively discussion among curators may provide as much insight as an accurate object identification itself. \nThe event is always free and open to the public\, but please note Federal and State regulations prohibit the monetary appraisal of objects. \nMuseum main lobby – Musuem of Indian Arts and Culture\, 710 Camino Lejo – Museum Hill.

SUMMARY:FRIENDS OF FOLK ART (FOFA) presents a lecture and slide show with Kapa Artist\, Lehuauakea\, at Vernick Auditorium.
DESCRIPTION:Lehuauakea is a māhū Native Hawaiian kapa maker and interdisciplinary artist from Pāpaʻikou on Moku O Keawe\, the Big Island of Hawaiʻi. Lehua’s Kānaka Maoli family descends from several lineages connected to Maui\, Kauaʻi\, Kohala\, and Hāmākua where their family resides to this day. Through a range of traditional Kanaka Maoli craft-based media\, their art serves as a means of exploring social and biological ecologies\, cultural and environmental reclamation\, and Indigenous identity. With a particular focus on the labor-intensive making of ʻohe kāpala (carved bamboo printing tools)\, kapa (bark cloth)\, and natural pigments\, Lehua is able to breathe new life into patterns and traditions practiced for generations. Through these acts of resilience that help forge deeper relationships with ʻāina\, this mode of Indigenous storytelling is carried well into the future. \nThey have participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in and around the Pacific Ocean\, including the recent Heard Museum exhibition He‘e Nalu: The Art and Legacy of Hawaiian Surfing\, and they opened their first curatorial research project\, DISplace\, at the Five Oaks Museum in Portland\, Oregon in 2020. The artist is currently based between the continent and Pāpaʻikou after earning their Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in Painting with a minor in Art + Ecology at Pacific Northwest College of Art.

SUMMARY:Nadya Tolokonnikova: Pussy Riot
DESCRIPTION:The New Mexico Museum of Art partners with the Santa Fe gallery CONTAINER Turner Carroll to host artist and musician Nadya Tolokonnikova. In 2012\, Tolokonnikova gained global recognition and attention — and was sentenced to two years in prison — following Punk Prayer\, an anti-Vladimir Putin performance piece she and conspirators staged inside a cathedral in Moscow. She started a hunger strike protesting the conditions in which she was being held and was ultimately sent to a Siberian penal colony before being released in December 2013. \nTolokonnikova is a founding member of Pussy Riot\, the Russian feminist protest art collective which now counts hundreds of people among its numbers. Pussy Riot was named among Time magazine’s most influential women of the year\, and The Guardian ranked Punk Prayer one of the “top five artworks of the 21st Century.” She regards her punk style balaklava\, electric guitar\, combat boots\, and minidress protest performances as artworks rather than musical performances. \nA longtime thorn in Putin’s side\, Tolokonnikova was declared a “foreign agent” by Russia in 2021 and has lived in exile ever since. She is also a cofounder of the independent news service and media outlet Mediazona and\, as cofounder of UnicornDAO\, was instrumental in raising more than 7 million dollars via UkraineDAO. She has spoken before the US Congress\, British Parliament\, and European Parliament. Among her many artistic achievements\, she collaborated with Bansky on his Dismaland exhibition and created an immersive experience at the Saatchi Gallery in London. She is the author of Read & Riot: A Pussy Riot Guide to Activism. \nTolokonnikova’s exhibition opens at CONTAINER at 5:00 on June 30. CONTAINER will be transformed into a fully immersive art experience with film\, prison artworks\, and new original artworks. She will perform at Meow Wolf on June 30 and will be in conversation with artist Judy Chicago at Through the Flower in Belen\, NM\, moderated by Tonya Turner Carroll on July 1. \nImage: Still from Putin’s Ashes\, 2023 \n
