SUMMARY:Friends of History Lecture Series "Workshop of Democracy: Statehood and World War I in New Mexico"
DESCRIPTION:The decades between the Civil War and the end of World War I have been described as the United States’ workshop of democracy.  During these sixty years\, as contemporary observer Walt Whitman remarked\, “not merely a nation but a teeming Nation of nations” pulled itself together to build an American Republic. \nOne special project was molding the Territory of New Mexico to fit into the Republic.  The formative steps toward statehood had two distinctive routes:  officials exercising political and legal power\, and a diverse population demonstrating its loyalty to the nation.  The same two paths were again decisive just five years after statehood when the United States entered World War I.  \nDr. David V. Holtby earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Washington\, spent four years as a military intelligence analyst in the USAF\, and completed his doctorate at the University of New Mexico in 1978. \nDuring a nearly thirty-year career in publishing\, he served as the in-house editor and also fulfilled administrative duties as editor-in-chief and associate director of the University of New Mexico Press.  Upon retiring in 2006\, he resumed historical research but shifted his emphasis from the Spanish Civil War to twentieth-century New Mexico\, resulting in books on statehood and World War I.

DESCRIPTION:The New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science is offering children’s camps during winter break. Camp is offerd for grades Kindergarten through 5th grade. Before care is available from 7:30 to 8:30 am every morning for ten dollars a day. After care is also available from 4:00pm to 5:00pm every day for ten dollars a day. Kindergarteners must have experience in full-day classes in order to attend the camp. Register online at Young explorers camp The camp starts on December 21 and runs through January 3. SUMMARY:Home on the Range From Ranches to Rockets
DESCRIPTION:“Home on the Range: From Ranches to Rockets” stretches through two galleries. Guests will learn about ranch life in the Tularosa Basin during the early 20th century\, and how events taking place halfway around the world brought about changes that for many ranchers were permanent. The area eventually became White Sands Missile Range\, drawing some of the world’s greatest minds in science and engineering. \n “We want people to understand what ranch life out there was like and what happened to those folks\,” said Leah Tookey\, Curator of History. “At first\, it was just the ranching story\, but we then decided to get into the military and science part of it. There’s a whole section about the science and research that goes on out there.” \nWhile private land being transitioned into U.S. government property wasn’t uncommon during the 1940s\, the story this exhibit tells is uniquely New Mexico because of the scope of research and what was at stake. \nThe story begins with ranchers from Texas settling in the basin in the late 1800s where they found grass tall and plentiful. What they didn’t know was that they had arrived during a particularly wet climactic period and raising cattle would not be as profitable as they once believed\, according to Tookey. The challenging\, yet rewarding\, lifestyle these ranch families chose changed quickly and dramatically in 1942. \nAfter the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor thrust the United States into World War II\, an executive order established a military training range in the region. The ranchers were told they needed to immediately move their families and livestock as they would not be allowed back until the end of the war. The families performed their patriotic duties and complied with the orders. Most would never return. \nWhile the basin was used to test rockets\, missiles and bombs — including the atomic bomb in 1945 — it was also used to launch America’s space program and other scientific programs\, some in the private sector. \n“For decades\, White Sands Missile Range has been referred to as a huge outdoor laboratory\, a place where weapons and civilian projects can be tested\,” said Jim Eckles\, longtime public information officer for the Range\, and co-curator of the exhibit with Tookey.

DESCRIPTION:Bank of America Theatre \nLos Pastores\, the New Mexican Shepherds Play\, was brought to New Mexico in 17th century from Spain. The play follows the adventures\, antics\, and battles of shepherds\, angels\, and devils. On their journey to Bethlehem to take their presents\, the shepherds are waylaid by Demonio. The audience is amused by the mischief of Bartolo\, the lazy shepherd\, and the rhetorical prowess and swordplay of San Miguel. \nBefore it was revived in 1973\, when a manuscript was discovered in a home in Las Nutrias\, the last time that Los Pastores had been performed in this area was in 1929. Filomena Baca and a group of parishioners of Nuestra Señora de Belén have been performing the play ever since. \n(taken from Enrique Lamadrid’s “Reflections on Los Pastores“) \nFree public event \nA discussion and Q&A session before the performance will be led by Filomena Baca and Dante Berry\, one of the actors in the play\, which has been performed by members of his family for generations.

The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture\, The Wheelwright Museum and Santa Fe Botanical Garden will all be open and have holiday festivities to enjoy with family and friends! \n4-7 pm – Paint a gourd ornament for the holidays\, and enjoy refreshments in the Atrium \n5:15 – 6:45 in the Vernick Auditorium Pasión Flamenca \nPasión Flamenca is a group of musicians who perform and present the art\, heritage\, and culture of Flamenco. Made up of guitarists\, singers\, and percussionists\, Pasión Flamenca will share the wonderful sounds of Villancicos\, traditional flamenco holiday songs from Spain. This is not Jingle Bells in Spanish but a fabulous rendering of songs dating back to the middle ages on the Iberian peninsula and developing through generations of Gitano communities into the lively and mesmerizing flamenco versions sung today. The group is made up of Luís Campos and Ronaldo Baca on guitar\, singer Nicolasa Chávez\, and percussionist Fabian Sisneros.

SUMMARY:Revealing Untold Stories of Chaco Canyon: Archaeocosmology Lecture on solar and lunar astronomy
DESCRIPTION:  \nAnna Sofaer\, Robert Weiner and Richard Friedman                                                                              \nThursday\, December 12\,  2019  • 6:30pm – 8pm                              \n  \nAnna Sofaer\, and colleagues Richard Friedman and Robert Weiner\, will share latest research findings\, revealing the extent of the Chaco culture across an area the size of Ohio. They examine the source of that powerful reach from the arid center of Chaco Canyon.  They explore through new three dimensional computer modeling the complex developments of Pueblo Bonito\, considered the most important center of the culture: it’s astounding 800 rooms built up to four stories\, precise solar alignments\, and vast quantity of ritual offerings. Objects such as macaws\, cacao\, copper bells\, and gambling pieces point to an intense ceremonial life and dynamic relationship with cultures of the tropics. Animations reveal Pueblo Bonito’s great number of kivas\, built and rebuilt through its 300 year history. Pueblo Bonito’s intriguing geometric formations\, united with its solar alignments\, suggest significant clues to the intellectual powers and interests of the Chaco architects\, geometers and astronomers.  These findings open a wider window on the American Southwest\, with comparisons to cosmology centers around the ancient world. This new research also includes the use of LiDAR technology to document enigmatic Chaco “roads\,” many of which connect the Great Houses with Great Kivas while others relate to striking features of the natural landscape and astronomical directions. \nIn 1977\, Anna Sofaer rediscovered the “Sun Dagger” in Chaco Canyon. Through her non-profit Solstice Project\, she has dedicated herself to collaborative research and education on the Chaco culture. Richard Friedman\, San Juan College\, is an expert in GIS and has integrated new aerial technologies with ground surveying. Robert Weiner\, Ph.D. student at Univ. Colorado\, Boulder\, has focused his research on Chacoan “roads” and written extensively on Mesoamerican objects found in Chaco Canyon. \nThere will be an opportunity to purchase books or videos and have them signed. This Museum’s one-of-a-kind interactive exhibit of the sun dagger\, produced by the Solstice Project\, will be open for viewing in our Space Science wing. \nCost: $8 nonmembers\, $7 members\, $5 students. SUMMARY:Ornament Workshop #2 Painting on Micaceous Clay
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our ornament workshops\, a perennial favorite among visitors and locals alike! \nOn December 10\, attendees will paint on pre-fired micaceous clay shapes\, including bells and stars.  \nOn December 12\, attendees have a second chance to paint pre-fired micaceous clay shapes. \nOn December 17\, attendees will work with vine wreaths\, evergreens\, and berries to create a festive holiday decoration. \nFinally\, on December 19\, attendees will work with stamped tin to create an ornament. \nThese are family-friendly workshops\, so bring the kids or grandkids! Adults without children are welcome to participate.
