SUMMARY:Inside Opera Workshop Series Il Postino
DESCRIPTION:TUESDAY\, JANUARY 21 (Salon Ortega/History and Literary Arts Building)—Valerie Martínez \nThe first workshop will focus on the various versions of Il Postino.  First it was novel in Spanish\, Ardiente Paciencia\, by Antonio Skarmeta that was translated into English by Katherine Silver.  Subsequently\, it was made into a 2000 film\, “Il Postino\,” directed by Massimo Troisi and Michael Radford.  Next\, it was transformed into an opera. How did “Il Postino” change as it shifted from fiction to film to libretto?  Valerie Martínez is the Director of History and Literary Arts at the National Hispanic Cultural Center.  Valerie spent 23 years as a professor of literature at the college and university level and joins the Inside Opera series as presenter for the second year. \n  \nTUESDAY\, JANUARY 28 (Salon Ortega/History and Literary Arts Building) – Oliver Prezant \nThis workshop will focus on the creation of the libretto and the music of the opera.  Oliver Prezant is a lecturer and educator for the Santa Fe Opera\, the Music Director and Conductor of the Santa Fe Community Orchestra\, and a Teaching Artist in the ArtWorks program. He has created lectures and education programs for audiences of all ages for numerous other organizations\, including the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival\, Opera Southwest\, and the Guilds of the San Francisco Opera.  Oliver joins us for the second year as a presenter for Inside Opera. \n  \nTUESDAY\, FEBRUARY 4 (on stage with members of the cast and the set in the Journal Theater) – Oliver Prezant \nThis workshop—on stage!—will emphasize the production and performance of “Il Postino” by Opera Southwest. \n  \nSign up for the workshops here:  https://nhccnm.wufoo.com/forms/inside-opera-workshop-series-il-postino/  \nABOUT THE OPERA \nFrom the Opera Southwest website:  “When exiled Chilean poet Pablo Neruda arrives on a tiny Italian island\, he receives so much fan mail that Mario is hired as his personal postman. Mario soon becomes Neruda’s student\, learning the art of poetry to woo a local barmaid. Inspired by Neruda\, Mario’s poetic voice continues to take wing as he expresses the struggles of his fellow working-class villagers. A firm friendship develops\, and the postman is forever a changed man. The sounds of the Mediterranean come alive in Catán’s stunningly beautiful\, Puccini-esque score – a story of love in its many forms\, set against a backdrop of conflicting political and spiritual ideologies. Based on the novel “Ardiente Paciencia” by Antonio Skármeta and the film by Michael Radford. Sung in Spanish with English supertitles.”

SUMMARY:Canes of Power Film Screening with Dr. Matthew Martinez
DESCRIPTION:The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture announces a screening of Canes of Power. Following the film\, a Q&A will be led by Dr. Matthew Martinez\, the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture’s deputy director\, and associate producer of the film. \nCanes of Power\, narrated by Cherokee Actor Wes Studi – a recent Academy Award recipient – is the story of President Abraham Lincoln’s gift of engraved wood canes gifted to each of New Mexico’s 19 Pueblo nations. The canes symbolized the recognition of tribal sovereignty at the very same time 13 Southern states were seeking their own sovereignty (in the form of succession) from the United States.  \n

SUMMARY:Let’s Take a Look! Curators Examine Your Treasures
DESCRIPTION:MIAC Curators gather in the lobby of the Museum on the third Wednesday of each month awaiting whatever treasures may walk through the door. This is your opportunity to bring a family heirloom\, something special from your collection\, or a piece you know nothing about. Naturally\, curators prefer to examine items from the Southwest\, but they will look at anything you bring in for review.\n \n \n \nFederal law prohibits curators from “appraising” any items\, but they will direct you to appropriate resources.

SUMMARY:Exhibit Opening - From Combat to Carpets: The Art of Afghan War Rugs
DESCRIPTION:“The exhibition made its debut at the Villa Terrace Decorative Art Museum in Milwaukee\, Wisconsin and has been traveling throughout the United States. The version opening at MOIFA is supplemented with items from the museum’s permanent collection\, including older carpets from the region. \nThis unique subset of handwoven rugs can teach us about the innovative nature of rug design and production\, as well as the long history of foreign involvement in Afghanistan. Rug producers\, provoked by decades of traders and invaders in the country\, adapted traditional motifs and compositions\, translating them into depictions of world maps\, tourist sites\, weapons\, and military figures. Such war rugs have proven popular among occupying military personnel\, journalists\, foreign aid workers\, international collectors\, and contemporary art curators. \nOver the years\, rug makers have continued to update popular imagery and themes to reflect current events\, changing technologies\, and the tastes of potential buyers. The emergence of war-related imagery in Afghan rug design has clearly aided the economic survival of area weavers and displaced craftspeople through years of armed conflict and cultural disruption. What war rugs mean to individual weavers is less understood. Are war rugs a celebration of modernity or a rejection of war? Are they a witness to shared trauma or a commercialization of violence? Are they testaments to ingenuity and a spirit of survival? Perhaps they are all of these things at once.” Explore more pieces from the exhibit \nAbout the Museum of International Folk Art: http://www.internationalfolkart.org/ \nFounded in 1953 by Florence Dibell Bartlett\, the Museum of International Folk Art’s mission is to foster understanding of the traditional arts to illuminate human creativity and shape a humane world. The museum holds the world’s largest international folk art collection of more than 150\,000 objects from six continents and over 150 nations\, representing a broad range of global artists whose artistic expressions make Santa Fe an international crossroads of culture. For many visitors\, fascination with folk art begins upon seeing the whimsical toys and traditional objects within the Girard Collection. For others\, the international textiles\, ceramics\, carvings and other cultural treasures in the Neutrogena Collection provide the allure.  The museum’s historic and contemporary Latino and Hispano folk art collections\, spanning the Spanish Colonial period to modern-day New Mexico\, reflect how artists respond to their time and place in ways both delightful and sobering. In 2010\, the museum opened the Mark Naylor and Dale Gunn Gallery of Conscience\, where exhibitions encourage visitors to exchange ideas on complex issues of human rights and social justice. \n 706 Camino Lejo\, on Museum Hill in Santa Fe\, NM 87505. (505) 476-1200. \nHours: 10 am to 5 pm daily\, May through October; closed Mondays November through April\, Thanksgiving\, Christmas\, and New Year’s Day. First Sunday of Every Month is free to NM Residents.

SUMMARY:Friends of History Lecture Series "Workshop of Democracy: Statehood and World War I in New Mexico"
DESCRIPTION:The decades between the Civil War and the end of World War I have been described as the United States’ workshop of democracy.  During these sixty years\, as contemporary observer Walt Whitman remarked\, “not merely a nation but a teeming Nation of nations” pulled itself together to build an American Republic. \nOne special project was molding the Territory of New Mexico to fit into the Republic.  The formative steps toward statehood had two distinctive routes:  officials exercising political and legal power\, and a diverse population demonstrating its loyalty to the nation.  The same two paths were again decisive just five years after statehood when the United States entered World War I. \nDr. David V. Holtby earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Washington\, spent four years as a military intelligence analyst in the USAF\, and completed his doctorate at the University of New Mexico in 1978. \nDuring a nearly thirty-year career in publishing\, he served as the in-house editor and also fulfilled administrative duties as editor-in-chief and associate director of the University of New Mexico Press.  Upon retiring in 2006\, he resumed historical research but shifted his emphasis from the Spanish Civil War to twentieth-century New Mexico\, resulting in books on statehood and World War I.

SUMMARY:NM Resident Free Sunday
DESCRIPTION:About the Museum of International Folk Art: http://www.internationalfolkart.org/ \nFounded in 1953 by Florence Dibell Bartlett\, the Museum of International Folk Art’s mission is to foster understanding of the traditional arts to illuminate human creativity and shape a humane world. SUMMARY:Let’s Take a Look! MIAC Curators Examine Your Treasures
DESCRIPTION:MIAC Curators gather in the lobby of the Museum on the third Wednesday of each month awaiting whatever treasures may walk through the door. This is your opportunity to bring a family heirloom\, something special from your collection\, or a piece you know nothing about. Naturally\, they prefer items from the American Southwest (in keeping with the museum’s focus)\, but they will check out anything you bring in. \nFederal law prohibits curators from “appraising” any items\, but they will direct you to appropriate resources. For more information\, visit this page: http://indianartsandculture.org/lets-take-a-look.

SUMMARY:Home on the Range From Ranches to Rockets
DESCRIPTION:“Home on the Range: From Ranches to Rockets” stretches through two galleries. Guests will learn about ranch life in the Tularosa Basin during the early 20th century\, and how events taking place halfway around the world brought about changes that for many ranchers were permanent. The area eventually became White Sands Missile Range\, drawing some of the world’s greatest minds in science and engineering. \n “We want people to understand what ranch life out there was like and what happened to those folks\,” said Leah Tookey\, Curator of History. “At first\, it was just the ranching story\, but we then decided to get into the military and science part of it. There’s a whole section about the science and research that goes on out there.” \nWhile private land being transitioned into U.S. government property wasn’t uncommon during the 1940s\, the story this exhibit tells is uniquely New Mexico because of the scope of research and what was at stake. \nThe story begins with ranchers from Texas settling in the basin in the late 1800s where they found grass tall and plentiful. What they didn’t know was that they had arrived during a particularly wet climactic period and raising cattle would not be as profitable as they once believed\, according to Tookey. The challenging\, yet rewarding\, lifestyle these ranch families chose changed quickly and dramatically in 1942. \nAfter the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor thrust the United States into World War II\, an executive order established a military training range in the region. The ranchers were told they needed to immediately move their families and livestock as they would not be allowed back until the end of the war. The families performed their patriotic duties and complied with the orders. Most would never return. \nWhile the basin was used to test rockets\, missiles and bombs — including the atomic bomb in 1945 — it was also used to launch America’s space program and other scientific programs\, some in the private sector. \n“For decades\, White Sands Missile Range has been referred to as a huge outdoor laboratory\, a place where weapons and civilian projects can be tested\,” said Jim Eckles\, longtime public information officer for the Range\, and co-curator of the exhibit with Tookey.
