SUMMARY:Folk Art Afternoons at the Libraries
DESCRIPTION:Next month at the Southside Library join us for \nFebruary 25 – Tile Mosaics \nAbout the Museum of International Folk Art: http://www.internationalfolkart.org/ \nFounded in 1953 by Florence Dibell Bartlett\, the Museum of International Folk Art’s mission is to foster understanding of the traditional arts to illuminate human creativity and shape a humane world. The museum holds the world’s largest international folk art collection of more than 150\,000 objects from six continents and over 150 nations\, representing a broad range of global artists whose artistic expressions make Santa Fe an international crossroads of culture. For others\, the international textiles\, ceramics\, carvings and other cultural treasures in the Neutrogena Collection provide the allure.  The museum’s historic and contemporary Latino and Hispano folk art collections\, spanning the Spanish Colonial period to modern-day New Mexico\, reflect how artists respond to their time and place in ways both delightful and sobering. DESCRIPTION:Community through Making From Peru to New Mexico January 6\, 2019 – May 3\, 2020\nCommunity through Making brings together local and Peruvian artists to explore how art shapes healthy and vibrant communities. SUMMARY:"Hardship\, Greed\, and Sorrow: An Officers Photo Album of 1866 New Mexico Territory"
DESCRIPTION:Please join us for a talk by author Devorah Romanek\, and joined by Hannah Abelbeck\, New Mexico History Museum Photo Archivist\, and Jennifer Nez Dennetdale\, Associate Professor of American Studies\, University of New Mexico\, on this compelling book which captures a fraught and complex moment in the history of the American Southwest. \nIn the aftermath of the Civil War\, the New Mexico Territory endured painful years of hardship and ongoing strife. During this turbulent period\, a US military officer stationed in the territory assembled an album of photographs\, a series of still shots taken by one or more anonymous photographers. Now\, some 150 years later\, this remarkable volume reproduces the anonymous officer’s “souvenir album” in its totality. \nOffering an important glimpse of the American Southwest in the mid-1860s\, the photo album places the photographs in historical context in connection to the Civil War and Reconstruction periods\, including the French intervention in New Mexico and the internment of Navajos at the Bosque Redondo Indian Reservation. \nIn addition to containing what may be the earliest extant photographs of Navajo Indians\, the album features both studio and field images of U.S. Army officers\, Mexican politicians\, and various sites throughout New Mexico.  \nBooks for purchase will be made available from the Museum Foundation shop\, located in the History Museum. \nFree Auditorium event-bottled water only please \n  \nDevorah Romanek is an anthropologist and Visual Culture expert and is currently Curator of Exhibits at the Maxwell Museum of Anthropology at the University of New Mexico. \n  \nJennifer Nez Dennetdale is Associate Professor of American Studies at the University of \nNew Mexico and the author of Reclaiming Diné History: The Legacies of Navajo Chief \nManuelito and Juanita. \n  \nHannah Abelbeck is the Photo Archivist with the New Mexico History Museum\, Santa Fe\, NM. \n  \nDaniel Kosharek\, previously the Photo Curator at the New Mexico History Museum\, Palace of the Governors\, Santa Fe\, NM. \n

SUMMARY:Antique Treasures Show
DESCRIPTION:Whether it’s learning how to best preserve a family heirloom\, identifying an archaeological discovery\, or looking to find a special antique to purchase\, the New Mexico Farm & Ranch Heritage Museum’s annual Antique Treasures Show is a two-day celebration of all things old\, unique\, and precious. \nThe show is 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Jan. 25\, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Jan. 26. Admission is $5 for adults\, $4 for senior citizens and $3 for children 4 to 17. Veterans and active U.S. military members are admitted for $2\, and children 3 and under are free. Admission includes all of the regular Museum offerings. \nThe show is a mix of antique and collectible vendors from throughout the region\, along with preservation and identification activities. Some of the vendors may also offer free unofficial\, independent appraisals. \nVisitors are invited to bring family heirlooms\, artifacts\, or objects from home to learn more about them and how to preserve them. Visitors can also play “Stump the Curator” by bringing in objects to see if the Museum’s curators – Director Mark Santiago\, Chief Curator and Program Manager Lisa Pugh\, former Chief Curator Toni Laumbach\, or History Curator Leah Tookey – can identify them. Stump the Curator is from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 2-4 p.m. each day. \nMark Santiago will also have an antique gun presentation each day at 1 p.m.\, and the Museum is planning a book sale. \nRepresentatives from Fort Selden Historic Site\, a sister site to the Farm & Ranch Museum\, will be at the show with some unusual objects to play “Identify It.” \nThe show also features demonstrations such as sewing\, weaving\, embroidery\, wool spinning and blacksmithing. \n

SUMMARY:The birth\, death and resurrection of Christ: from Michelangelo to Tiepolo
DESCRIPTION:During the Renaissance\, biblical episodes from the life of Christ were the artistic mainstay for a majority of artists. This exhibition focuses on the three major stages of Christ’s life: his incarnation\, in the form of the Nativity; his Crucifixion; and finally the Resurrection. Through fifty three drawings and prints from the British Museum\, we explore the way that artists differently envisioned these key moments of Christ’s life and how they prepared their paintings and frescoes on these themes. \nBeginning in the Renaissance and ending in the 18th century these skilled works chart the continuity and differences in the narrative approach\, while also providing a broad overview of the functions\, techniques and major artistic trends of the period. \nView the gallery guide

SUMMARY:Inside Opera Workshop Series Il Postino
DESCRIPTION:TUESDAY\, JANUARY 21 (Salon Ortega/History and Literary Arts Building)—Valerie Martínez \nThe first workshop will focus on the various versions of Il Postino.  First it was novel in Spanish\, Ardiente Paciencia\, by Antonio Skarmeta that was translated into English by Katherine Silver.  Subsequently\, it was made into a 2000 film\, “Il Postino\,” directed by Massimo Troisi and Michael Radford.  Next\, it was transformed into an opera. How did “Il Postino” change as it shifted from fiction to film to libretto?  Valerie Martínez is the Director of History and Literary Arts at the National Hispanic Cultural Center.  Valerie spent 23 years as a professor of literature at the college and university level and joins the Inside Opera series as presenter for the second year. \n  \nTUESDAY\, JANUARY 28 (Salon Ortega/History and Literary Arts Building) – Oliver Prezant \nThis workshop will focus on the creation of the libretto and the music of the opera.  Oliver Prezant is a lecturer and educator for the Santa Fe Opera\, the Music Director and Conductor of the Santa Fe Community Orchestra\, and a Teaching Artist in the ArtWorks program. He has created lectures and education programs for audiences of all ages for numerous other organizations\, including the Santa Fe Chamber Music Festival\, Opera Southwest\, and the Guilds of the San Francisco Opera.  Oliver joins us for the second year as a presenter for Inside Opera. \n  \nTUESDAY\, FEBRUARY 4 (on stage with members of the cast and the set in the Journal Theater) – Oliver Prezant \nThis workshop—on stage!—will emphasize the production and performance of “Il Postino” by Opera Southwest. \n  \nSign up for the workshops here:  https://nhccnm.wufoo.com/forms/inside-opera-workshop-series-il-postino/  \nABOUT THE OPERA \nFrom the Opera Southwest website:  “When exiled Chilean poet Pablo Neruda arrives on a tiny Italian island\, he receives so much fan mail that Mario is hired as his personal postman. Mario soon becomes Neruda’s student\, learning the art of poetry to woo a local barmaid. Inspired by Neruda\, Mario’s poetic voice continues to take wing as he expresses the struggles of his fellow working-class villagers. A firm friendship develops\, and the postman is forever a changed man. The sounds of the Mediterranean come alive in Catán’s stunningly beautiful\, Puccini-esque score – a story of love in its many forms\, set against a backdrop of conflicting political and spiritual ideologies. Based on the novel “Ardiente Paciencia” by Antonio Skármeta and the film by Michael Radford. Sung in Spanish with English supertitles.”

SUMMARY:Canes of Power Film Screening with Dr. Matthew Martinez
DESCRIPTION:The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture announces a screening of Canes of Power. Following the film\, a Q&A will be led by Dr. Matthew Martinez\, the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture’s deputy director\, and associate producer of the film. \nCanes of Power\, narrated by Cherokee Actor Wes Studi – a recent Academy Award recipient – is the story of President Abraham Lincoln’s gift of engraved wood canes gifted to each of New Mexico’s 19 Pueblo nations. The canes symbolized the recognition of tribal sovereignty at the very same time 13 Southern states were seeking their own sovereignty (in the form of succession) from the United States.  \n

SUMMARY:Exhibit Opening - From Combat to Carpets: The Art of Afghan War Rugs
DESCRIPTION:“The exhibition made its debut at the Villa Terrace Decorative Art Museum in Milwaukee\, Wisconsin and has been traveling throughout the United States. The version opening at MOIFA is supplemented with items from the museum’s permanent collection\, including older carpets from the region. \nThis unique subset of handwoven rugs can teach us about the innovative nature of rug design and production\, as well as the long history of foreign involvement in Afghanistan. Rug producers\, provoked by decades of traders and invaders in the country\, adapted traditional motifs and compositions\, translating them into depictions of world maps\, tourist sites\, weapons\, and military figures. Such war rugs have proven popular among occupying military personnel\, journalists\, foreign aid workers\, international collectors\, and contemporary art curators. \nOver the years\, rug makers have continued to update popular imagery and themes to reflect current events\, changing technologies\, and the tastes of potential buyers. The emergence of war-related imagery in Afghan rug design has clearly aided the economic survival of area weavers and displaced craftspeople through years of armed conflict and cultural disruption. What war rugs mean to individual weavers is less understood. Are war rugs a celebration of modernity or a rejection of war? Are they a witness to shared trauma or a commercialization of violence? Are they testaments to ingenuity and a spirit of survival? Perhaps they are all of these things at once.” Explore more pieces from the exhibit \nAbout the Museum of International Folk Art: http://www.internationalfolkart.org/ \nFounded in 1953 by Florence Dibell Bartlett\, the Museum of International Folk Art’s mission is to foster understanding of the traditional arts to illuminate human creativity and shape a humane world. The museum holds the world’s largest international folk art collection of more than 150\,000 objects from six continents and over 150 nations\, representing a broad range of global artists whose artistic expressions make Santa Fe an international crossroads of culture. For many visitors\, fascination with folk art begins upon seeing the whimsical toys and traditional objects within the Girard Collection. In 2010\, the museum opened the Mark Naylor and Dale Gunn Gallery of Conscience\, where exhibitions encourage visitors to exchange ideas on complex issues of human rights and social justice. \n 706 Camino Lejo\, on Museum Hill in Santa Fe\, NM 87505. (505) 476-1200. \nHours: 10 am to 5 pm daily\, May through October; closed Mondays November through April\, Thanksgiving\, Christmas\, and New Year’s Day. First Sunday of Every Month is free to NM Residents.

SUMMARY:Friends of History Lecture Series "Workshop of Democracy: Statehood and World War I in New Mexico"
DESCRIPTION:The decades between the Civil War and the end of World War I have been described as the United States’ workshop of democracy.  During these sixty years\, as contemporary observer Walt Whitman remarked\, “not merely a nation but a teeming Nation of nations” pulled itself together to build an American Republic. \nOne special project was molding the Territory of New Mexico to fit into the Republic.  The formative steps toward statehood had two distinctive routes:  officials exercising political and legal power\, and a diverse population demonstrating its loyalty to the nation.  The same two paths were again decisive just five years after statehood when the United States entered World War I. \nDr. David V. Holtby earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Washington\, spent four years as a military intelligence analyst in the USAF\, and completed his doctorate at the University of New Mexico in 1978. \nDuring a nearly thirty-year career in publishing\, he served as the in-house editor and also fulfilled administrative duties as editor-in-chief and associate director of the University of New Mexico Press.  Upon retiring in 2006\, he resumed historical research but shifted his emphasis from the Spanish Civil War to twentieth-century New Mexico\, resulting in books on statehood and World War I.

SUMMARY:NM Resident Free Sunday
DESCRIPTION:About the Museum of International Folk Art: http://www.internationalfolkart.org/ \nFounded in 1953 by Florence Dibell Bartlett\, the Museum of International Folk Art’s mission is to foster understanding of the traditional arts to illuminate human creativity and shape a humane world.
