SUMMARY:Native Pottery Demonstration with Helen Bird\, Santo Domingo Pueblo
DESCRIPTION:Helen D. Bird is a self-taught master potter who learned about traditional pottery making by watching her great-aunt\, whom she only knew as Sah’NaYa. Bird started experimenting with pottery making in 1984. Today\, her work is sought by collectors and is housed in museums and local collections. Helen has also continued making utilitarian pottery as well as ceremonial pieces. \nBird was commissioned to create a Native American designed Starbucks travel mug which has been sold world-wide. Although Bird focuses on traditional Pueblo polychrome and micaceous pottery\, she has recently added a contemporary flair to her traditional designs.  \nBird takes pride in gathering and processing all natural\, local materials including the clays\, temper and paints. Her pots are traditionally fired at her family home. All processes are being passed down to her children and grandchildren.

SUMMARY:Mid-Day Música Buena Concert
DESCRIPTION:Cipriano Vigil is a 2019 New Mexico Music Commission Platinum Music Awards honoree. He has won several other prestigious awards. These include being honored as a Living Treasure\, the Governor’s Award\, the New Mexico Endowment for the Humanities Award. Cipriano has been nominated three times for the National Heritage Award for outstanding work in maintaining and preserving traditional folk music. \nHe was born and raised in the small village of Chamisal\, New Mexico. He received his baccalaureate degree in Music Education from Highlands University. Upon completion of his undergraduate work\, he received a scholarship to pursue a master’s degree in Bilingual Education\, also from Highlands University. Another scholarship followed from the Mexican government. In Mexico\, he studied at the National Institute of Fine Arts where he obtained a second master’s degree in Ethnomusicology. While studying in Mexico\, he would go to every and any place where music was played\, including dance halls and bars. From these excursions\, he absorbed the knowledge of many different styles of music. \nHe began his career as a professor at Northern New Mexico College in 1980\, and retired from that institution in 2004. It was during this time that he also completed his doctorate in Ethnomusicology\, which he received in 1988. This same year he became the Chairperson of the Fine Arts Department\, a position he held for ten years. This exhibition of more than forty works of art in a variety of mediums features images by artists who incorporate letters\, words\, and phrases into their visual creations.  \nAmong the delights of the exhibition are photographs inspired by the words in our everyday environment\, such as shop signs\, graffiti\, and advertising\, by photographers including Van Deren Coke\, Miguel Gandert\, and Walker Evans. Comics and cartoons offer another familiar model for joining words with images\, as seen in prints by Betty Hahn\, Jason Knapp\, and Joyce Neimanas. In other cases\, words and images work together in service of a social or political message\, seen in pieces by Jaune Quick-to-See Smith\, David Sloan\, and May Stevens. Notes\, handwritten letters\, and poems also make an appearance\, incorporated into compositions by Meridel Rubenstein\, Alex Traube\, and others. SUMMARY:Voices in Science lecture- Pluto and Beyond: Exploring the Solar System’s Frontier New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science
DESCRIPTION:Join the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science for Voices in Science.\n \n\n \nSpeaker: John Spencer\, Ph.D.\, Southwest Research Institute \n\n \n\nWhen Clyde Tombaugh discovered Pluto 90 years ago this month\, he was ahead of his time.  It took decades to learn that Pluto is not the oddball outsider that it first seemed to be\, but is the largest of a vast swarm of objects beyond Neptune called the Kuiper Belt.  NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft made the first close-up exploration of Pluto and its five moons in 2015\, revealing a complex and dramatic world.  On New Year’s Day 2019\, a billion miles beyond Pluto\, New Horizons flew by a much smaller member of the Kuiper Belt\, a 20-mile long mini-world now named Arrokoth.  Arrokoth turned out to be a pristine leftover from the solar system’s formation\, unlike anything previously seen in the solar system. \nDr. John Spencer is Deputy Project Scientist on the New Horizons mission.  He grew up in England\, and obtained a Bachelor’s degree in geology at the University of Cambridge in 1978 and a Ph.D. in Planetary Sciences at the University of Arizona in 1987.  He then worked at the University of Hawaii\, and Lowell Observatory in Arizona\, before coming to Boulder in 2004 to join Southwest Research Institute.  He specializes in the exploration of the outer solar system\, using Earth-based telescopes\, the Hubble Space Telescope\, and interplanetary robot spacecraft. \nPreregistration is encouraged. SUMMARY:Subtle shades draw an opening path: the poetic work of Agnes Martin’s art
DESCRIPTION:Utako Shindo\, Ph.D. is a Tokyo artist whose studio and research pursuits are the untranslatability of art and nuanced shadow-light as poetic medium. Her year-long project based in New Mexico traces Martins’ artistic path — scholarly and experientially. She is seeking a deeper understanding of how Martin’s abstractions embody ineffable life and express universal emotions. In turn\, Shindo’s own art now reflects her understanding of Martin’s path. SUMMARY:Friends of History Lecture Series "China: The Aim of the Coronado Expedition"
DESCRIPTION:Antonio de Mendoza\, the architect of the Coronado Expedition of 1539-1542\, had as his main goal to complete Columbus’s project of reaching Asia\, by traveling westward from Spain. Europeans of the day were sure that was possible by land from Mexico City\, and information from Native Americans indicated it would take only a few months. But when the expeditionaries reached the Zuni pueblos of west-central New Mexico\, they were profoundly disappointed and furiously angry with their guide fray Marcos de Niza. They were so angry that they threatened to kill the friar on the spot. From that moment\, the Coronado Expedition was an unredeemable failure. But Mendoza’s plan succeeded anyway. \nRichard and Shirley Cushing Flint both graduated from St. John’s College in Santa Fe. Shirley holds a master’s degree in Southwest studies from New Mexico Highlands University\, and Richard earned a Ph.D. in Latin American and Western U.S. history from the University of New Mexico. For forty years their special research focus has been the Coronado Expedition. Today\, they are widely recognized as the foremost authorities on the expedition. Their latest book\, A Most Splendid Company: The Coronado Expedition in Global Perspective\, presents a wealth of new evidence that reshapes our understanding of the expedition.

A collaborative research project with San Ildefonso Pueblo\, his dissertation research examines Tewa resistance to the Spanish reconquest efforts in the latter part of the Pueblo Revolt era as evident in the archaeological\, historical\, and oral records.

DESCRIPTION:February 2\, 7 & 9\, 2020 \n2 pm—Sundays 7:30 pm—Friday \nOpera Southwest presents Daniel Catán’s Il Postino\, a fully staged opera with orchestra\, sung in Spanish with both Spanish and English translation supertitles\, and presented in two acts with one intermission. \nPresented in partnership with the National Hispanic Cultural Center\, Il Postino is based on the novel Ardiente Paciencia by Antonio Skármeta\, as well as the film by Michael Radford. When exiled Chilean poet Pablo Neruda arrives on a tiny Italian island\, he receives so much fan mail that Mario is hired as his personal postman. Mario soon becomes Neruda’s student\, learning the art of poetry to woo a local barmaid. Inspired by Neruda\, Mario’s poetic voice continues to take wing as he expresses the struggles of his fellow working class villagers. DESCRIPTION:Community through Making From Peru to New Mexico January 6\, 2019 – May 3\, 2020\nCommunity through Making brings together local and Peruvian artists to explore how art shapes healthy and vibrant communities. The installation is a conversation across borders\, highlighting three collaborative projects that paired local artists and artists from Peru for 10-day residencies in conjunction with the exhibition Crafting Memory: The Art of Community in Peru.
