SUMMARY:Family Mornings at Folk Art
DESCRIPTION:About the Museum of International Folk Art: http://www.internationalfolkart.org/ \nFounded in 1953 by Florence Dibell Bartlett\, the Museum of International Folk Art’s mission is to foster understanding of the traditional arts to illuminate human creativity and shape a humane world. The museum holds the world’s largest international folk art collection of more than 150\,000 objects from six continents and over 150 nations\, representing a broad range of global artists whose artistic expressions make Santa Fe an international crossroads of culture. For many visitors\, fascination with folk art begins upon seeing the whimsical toys and traditional objects within the Girard Collection. For others\, the international textiles\, ceramics\, carvings and other cultural treasures in the Neutrogena Collection provide the allure.  The museum’s historic and contemporary Latino and Hispano folk art collections\, spanning the Spanish Colonial period to modern-day New Mexico\, reflect how artists respond to their time and place in ways both delightful and sobering. In 2010\, the museum opened the Mark Naylor and Dale Gunn Gallery of Conscience\, where exhibitions encourage visitors to exchange ideas on complex issues of human rights and social justice. \n 706 Camino Lejo\, on Museum Hill in Santa Fe\, NM 87505. (505) 476-1200. \nHours: 10 am to 5 pm daily\, May through October; closed Mondays November through April\, Thanksgiving\, Christmas\, and New Year’s Day. First Sunday of Every Month is free to NM Residents.

SUMMARY:PBS-SCIENCE CAFÉ @ THE MUSEUM: THE PLASTIC PROBLEM
DESCRIPTION:By 2050\, there will be more plastic than fish in the oceans.  It’s an environmental crisis in the making for nearly 70 years.  Plastic pollution is now considered one of the largest environmental threats facing humans and animals globally.  Because it doesn’t degrade and instead breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces\, much of that plastic will remain here on earth.  The problem is clear—too much plastic.  \nCome to the February NMPBS Science Café and view a clip of PBS NewsHour: The Plastic Problem and then join in a discussion.  Attendees interested in solutions are invited to visit the museum’s traveling exhibit\, Sayaka Ganz-Reclaimed Creations\, featuring sculptures that celebrate the true wonders of nature and fabricated entirely with reclaimed materials.  Entrance to the exhibit is included with regular admission to the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science.   \nAdmission to the café is free\, but a reservation is required.  For more information\, and to make a reservation\, contact Rose Poston at (505) 277-2396 or rposton@nmpbs.org.  Seats are limited and available on a first-come\, first-served basis. \nPrice: Admission to the café is free\, but a reservation is required.

SUMMARY:They Won the Vote: Suffrage and Suffragists in New Mexico Presenter: Sylvia Ramos Cruz M.D.
DESCRIPTION:The campaign for woman’s suffrage in New Mexico is rich and deep. But\, as with other aspects of women’s lives\, most of their stories—political\, economic\, social—are not found in history books. This talk travels from suffrage nationally to suffrage and suffragists in New Mexico. Some of the protagonists in this story\, such as Adelina Otero Warren and Octaviano A. Larrazolo\, are well known historical figures. Others\, including Ada McPherson Morley\, Isabella Selmes Ferguson\, Cora Armstrong Kellam\, Evelyn Fisher Frisbie and Margaret Green Cartwright\, are less so. We’ll look at some of the women and men whose contributions to that 72-year-long struggle are still being unearthed in family lore\, memoirs\, songs\, newspapers\, and a few precious\, oft-quoted scholarly works. \nWhen: \nFriday\, February 21\, 2020 12:00 noon \n  \nWhere: \nNew Mexico State Library \n1209 Camino Carlos Rey \nSanta Fe\, NM 87507 \n(505) 476-9700 \nreference@state.nm.us \n  \nPresenter biography: \nSylvia Ramos Cruz is a retired general surgeon\, poet\, writer and women’s rights activist. She writes poems inspired by art\, women’s lives and everyday injustices. Many have roots in places she calls home—Puerto Rico\, New York\, New Mexico. Her photographs and award-winning poems have appeared in local and national publications\, including Malpais Review\, Persimmon Tree\, Encore: Prize Poems 2017\, Journal of Latina Critical Feminism and Sin Fronteras 2019. Albuquerque Rail Yards Trilogy—a 3-part poetry and photography collage installation—is in the City of Albuquerque’s Public Art collection. \nHer ongoing creative work focuses on women’s history in New Mexico. The upcoming centennial of the 19th amendment to the US Constitution\, Woman’s Suffrage\, inspired her to research and write about the suffrage movement here and the people who took part in it.

SUMMARY:Native Pottery Demonstration with Helen Bird\, Santo Domingo Pueblo
DESCRIPTION:Helen D. Bird is a self-taught master potter who learned about traditional pottery making by watching her great-aunt\, whom she only knew as Sah’NaYa. Bird started experimenting with pottery making in 1984. Today\, her work is sought by collectors and is housed in museums and local collections. Helen has also continued making utilitarian pottery as well as ceremonial pieces. \nBird was commissioned to create a Native American designed Starbucks travel mug which has been sold world-wide. Although Bird focuses on traditional Pueblo polychrome and micaceous pottery\, she has recently added a contemporary flair to her traditional designs.  \nBird takes pride in gathering and processing all natural\, local materials including the clays\, temper and paints. Her pots are traditionally fired at her family home. All processes are being passed down to her children and grandchildren.

SUMMARY:Let’s Take a Look! Curators Examine Your Treasures
DESCRIPTION:MIAC Curators gather in the lobby of the Museum on the third Wednesday of each month awaiting whatever treasures may walk through the door. This is your opportunity to bring a family heirloom\, something special from your collection\, or a piece you know nothing about. Naturally\, curators prefer to examine items from the Southwest\, but they will look at anything you bring in for review.\n \n \n \nFederal law prohibits curators from “appraising” any items\, but they will direct you to appropriate resources.

SUMMARY:"Heading into the Wind: A Memoir"
DESCRIPTION:With the temperament of Santa Claus and the tenacity of a badger\, Jack Loeffler reveals his compassion and concern for Southwestern traditional cultures and their respective habitats in the wake of Manifest Destiny. Working both as an individual and with comrades–including Edward Abbey and Gary Snyder–he was part of an early coterie of counterculturalists and environmentalists who fought to thwart the plunder of natural resources in the Southwest. Loeffler\, a former jazz musician\, fire lookout\, museum curator\, bioregionalist\, and self-taught aural historian\, shares his humor and imagination\, his adventures\, observations\, reflections\, and meditations along the trail in his retelling of a life well lived. In this honest memoir\, he advises each and every one of us to go skinny-dipping joyfully in the flow of Nature to better understand where we’re headed. \n  \nAbout the Author \n  \nJack Loeffler is an aural historian\, environmentalist\, writer\, radio producer\, and sound-collage artist. He is the author or editor of many books\, including Thinking Like a Watershed: Voices from the West\, Survival Along the Continental Divide: An Anthology of Interviews\, and Adventures with Ed: A Portrait of Abbey (all from UNM Press). \n

SUMMARY:Historic Film: Hungarian Festival Dress Screening begins at 2 pm
SUMMARY:Word Play
DESCRIPTION:Words and pictures have a long history of playing well together\, sometimes reinforcing and sometimes contradicting each other. This exhibition of more than forty works of art in a variety of mediums features images by artists who incorporate letters\, words\, and phrases into their visual creations.  \nAmong the delights of the exhibition are photographs inspired by the words in our everyday environment\, such as shop signs\, graffiti\, and advertising\, by photographers including Van Deren Coke\, Miguel Gandert\, and Walker Evans. Comics and cartoons offer another familiar model for joining words with images\, as seen in prints by Betty Hahn\, Jason Knapp\, and Joyce Neimanas. In other cases\, words and images work together in service of a social or political message\, seen in pieces by Jaune Quick-to-See Smith\, David Sloan\, and May Stevens. Notes\, handwritten letters\, and poems also make an appearance\, incorporated into compositions by Meridel Rubenstein\, Alex Traube\, and others. These whimsical\, poignant\, and sometimes cryptic compositions are accompanied by a variety of word puzzles and games in the gallery that invite visitors to play along. \nVisit our Virtual Tours page to explore this exhibition virtually!  \nCheck out the Word Play  virtual workbook for exhibition-related activities you can do at home!  \n

SUMMARY:Voices in Science lecture- Pluto and Beyond: Exploring the Solar System’s Frontier New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science
DESCRIPTION:Join the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science for Voices in Science.\n \n\n \nSpeaker: John Spencer\, Ph.D.\, Southwest Research Institute \n\n \n\nWhen Clyde Tombaugh discovered Pluto 90 years ago this month\, he was ahead of his time.  It took decades to learn that Pluto is not the oddball outsider that it first seemed to be\, but is the largest of a vast swarm of objects beyond Neptune called the Kuiper Belt.  NASA’s New Horizons spacecraft made the first close-up exploration of Pluto and its five moons in 2015\, revealing a complex and dramatic world.  On New Year’s Day 2019\, a billion miles beyond Pluto\, New Horizons flew by a much smaller member of the Kuiper Belt\, a 20-mile long mini-world now named Arrokoth.  Arrokoth turned out to be a pristine leftover from the solar system’s formation\, unlike anything previously seen in the solar system. \nDr. John Spencer is Deputy Project Scientist on the New Horizons mission.  He grew up in England\, and obtained a Bachelor’s degree in geology at the University of Cambridge in 1978 and a Ph.D. in Planetary Sciences at the University of Arizona in 1987.  He then worked at the University of Hawaii\, and Lowell Observatory in Arizona\, before coming to Boulder in 2004 to join Southwest Research Institute.  He specializes in the exploration of the outer solar system\, using Earth-based telescopes\, the Hubble Space Telescope\, and interplanetary robot spacecraft. \nPreregistration is encouraged. Tickets can be purchased at the door (if seats are available) \nQuestions: jayne.aubele@state.nm.us \nPrice: $8 nonmembers\, $7 members\, $5 students \nfor tickets click here

SUMMARY:Subtle shades draw an opening path: the poetic work of Agnes Martin’s art
DESCRIPTION:Utako Shindo\, Ph.D. is a Tokyo artist whose studio and research pursuits are the untranslatability of art and nuanced shadow-light as poetic medium. Her year-long project based in New Mexico traces Martins’ artistic path — scholarly and experientially. She is seeking a deeper understanding of how Martin’s abstractions embody ineffable life and express universal emotions. In turn\, Shindo’s own art now reflects her understanding of Martin’s path. Shindo is a Japanese government creative fellow and a resident at Linda Swanson’s Forde Visser Archive Southwest\, Santa Fe.  \nNew Mexico Museum of Art\, St. Francis Auditorium \n  \nImage Credit: a study – work on paper in studio (detail)\, Utako Shindo\, 2019

SUMMARY:Friends of History Lecture Series "China: The Aim of the Coronado Expedition"
DESCRIPTION:Antonio de Mendoza\, the architect of the Coronado Expedition of 1539-1542\, had as his main goal to complete Columbus’s project of reaching Asia\, by traveling westward from Spain. Europeans of the day were sure that was possible by land from Mexico City\, and information from Native Americans indicated it would take only a few months. But when the expeditionaries reached the Zuni pueblos of west-central New Mexico\, they were profoundly disappointed and furiously angry with their guide fray Marcos de Niza. They were so angry that they threatened to kill the friar on the spot. From that moment\, the Coronado Expedition was an unredeemable failure. But Mendoza’s plan succeeded anyway. \nRichard and Shirley Cushing Flint both graduated from St. John’s College in Santa Fe. Shirley holds a master’s degree in Southwest studies from New Mexico Highlands University\, and Richard earned a Ph.D. in Latin American and Western U.S. history from the University of New Mexico. For forty years their special research focus has been the Coronado Expedition. Today\, they are widely recognized as the foremost authorities on the expedition. Their latest book\, A Most Splendid Company: The Coronado Expedition in Global Perspective\, presents a wealth of new evidence that reshapes our understanding of the expedition.
