DESCRIPTION:10 am; dancing begins at approximately 12 pm\nJoin us as Kalpulli Ehecatl and Kalpulli Izkalli host Yankwik Xiwitl\, or Mexika/Aztec New Year\, on the NHCC’s Plaza Mayor. The free public event\, ushering in Chikyei Tekpatl/Ocho Pedernal/Eight Stone Blade\, features fire making with a hand drill\, an offering of flowers and fruit\, and ritual Aztec dancing. \nThere are three different year counts in traditional Mesoamerican culture: a lunar year\, a solar year\, and a Venutian year. Mexika New Year celebrates the solar year of 365.25 days. This year’s celebration is preceded by two free educational presentations at the Center— an overview of the Aztec calendar at 11 am on Saturday\, March 7\, and an explanation of the 260-day ceremonial year at 11 am on Saturday\, March 14. An additional workshop\, sponsored by Kalpulli Izkalli\, will be held at Casa Barelas at 6 pm on Wednesday\, March 11. SUMMARY:Native Pottery Demonstration with Dolores Lewis and Claudia Mitchell (Acoma Pueblo)
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday\, March 11\, for a special demonstration with Dolores Lewis and her niece\, Claudia Mitchell (both Acoma Pueblo). Dolores began practicing pottery making early in her life while Claudia is a relative newcomer\, having started in 2013. Both potters benefited from the instruction and assistance of Lucy Lewis\, Dolores’s mother\, an accomplished and renowned Acoma potter who Dolores credits with helping to show her the way and encouraging her to keep this art alive. Dolores helped Lucy wet burnish and white slip her pots with the rocks she continues to use. Dolores and Claudia are committed to using resources found only at Acoma Pueblo\, from the clay to the paints\, and the fine yucca tools used for decorating each piece.

SUMMARY:Friends of History Lecture Series  "Looking Back; Reflecting on Collections”
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Romero will discuss the New Mexico History Museum’s newest exhibition\, Looking Back: Reflecting on Collections\, scheduled to open to the public on March 8\, 2020. This show focuses on the museum’s collecting history\, from the earliest beginnings at the Palace of the Governors through the 21st century. \nShe and other museum curators and colleagues organized over three hundred objects and photos from the collections\, some of which appear on exhibit for the first time. In addition to exploring various collections\, Dr. Romero will also discuss some of the challenges in maintaining thousands of objects and what new questions arise from bringing in new pieces to the museum. \nAlicia Romero is from Albuquerque\, where she continues to reside. \nShe received her BA and MA degrees in History from UNM and her PhD in History from the University of California\, Santa Cruz. She wrote her dissertation on the Barelas neighborhood near downtown Albuquerque. Though she primarily focuses on Nuevomexicano and Nuevomexicana history\, she has a great interest in Mexican and Latin American history\, labor history\, popular culture\, and oral history.

SUMMARY:Talk on the Tribesourcing Project with Jennifer Jenkins\, PhD Sunday\, March 1\, 2020 2:00-3:30pm in the Vernick auditorium.
DESCRIPTION:“This NEH-funded project seeks to “tribesource” 60 educational films about the Native peoples of the Southwestern U.S. works from the American Indian Film Gallery\, a collection awarded to the University of Arizona in 2011. Most of the films were made in the mid-20th century and reflect mainstream cultural attitudes of the day. Often the narration pronounces meaning that is inaccurate or disrespectful\, but the visual narratives are for the most part quite remarkable. At this historical distance\, many of these films have come to be understood by both cultural insiders and outside scholars as documentation of cultural practices and lifeways—and\, indeed\, languages—that are receding as practitioners and speakers pass on.  This project seeks to rebalance the historical record\, intentionally shifting emphasis from external perceptions of Native peoples to the voices\, knowledge\, and languages of the peoples represented in the films by participatory recording of new narrations for the films. \n  \nTribesourcing places historical materials with the peoples they represent in order to tell the untold or suppressed story. Each film in this project will be streamed in a Mukurtu-based website with alternate narrations from within the culture in English and in Native languages. This method allows for identification of people\, places\, practices\, vocabulary and stories that might otherwise be lost\, as well as providing a rich\, community-based metadata record for each film. Taking a small step toward cultural repatriation of content\, tribesourcing as a methodology is guided by the Protocols for American Indian Archival Materials (2006). \n  \nThis project seeks to contribute to ongoing efforts to decolonize the archive and restore voice and narrative sovereignty to the people who appear in these films—as agents of their own information rather than subjects of a governmental or corporate agenda.  Participation\, Equity\, and Inclusion are central to this project.” \n  \n
