SUMMARY:Curator’s Coffee: Plastics are Forever-Reduce\, Reuse\, Recycle
DESCRIPTION:  \n \n\n \n\n \nJoin the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science for Curator’s Coffee panel discussion on plastics. Plastic pollution is past the tipping point; it is now considered one of the largest environmental threats facing humans and animals globally.  We now see plastic litter everywhere on Earth and in our own diets. Plastic doesn’t degrade\, it just breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces.  We are already bearing cleanup costs of mountains of plastic waste and it will get worse for future generations. We have a good recycling program in Albuquerque…but where can all of the plastic waste ultimately go? And how can we reduce our plastic use?\n\n \n\nKick-off the week of the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day with this event. Join us for light refreshments and morning of conversation with dedicated local experts about the state of plastic recycling and creative solutions used to reduce the amount of material entering landfills in New Mexico.  Learn how other areas are responding to the plastic waste crisis\, and what can be done locally.  \nSpeakers: Sarah Pierpont\, Executive Director of the New Mexico Recycling Coalition\, Jill Holbert\, Associate Director City of ABQ Solid Waste Management Department\, Rachel Zulevi\,  a “zero-waste lifestyle\, and Jonathan Black\,  a Senior Policy Advisor for U.S. Senator Tom Udall (D-NM) on energy and environmental issues.    \nCost: $8 ($7 for members\, $5 for students) includes museum admission (including the exhibit Sayaka Ganz: Reclaimed Creations and refreshments. Preregistration required. Seats are limited. (NOTE that the starting time is earlier than other Curator’s Coffees)  \nTickets here

SUMMARY:Cancelled: Family Mornings at Folk Art
DESCRIPTION:About the Museum of International Folk Art: http://www.internationalfolkart.org/ \nFounded in 1953 by Florence Dibell Bartlett\, the Museum of International Folk Art’s mission is to foster understanding of the traditional arts to illuminate human creativity and shape a humane world. The museum holds the world’s largest international folk art collection of more than 150\,000 objects from six continents and over 150 nations\, representing a broad range of global artists whose artistic expressions make Santa Fe an international crossroads of culture. For many visitors\, fascination with folk art begins upon seeing the whimsical toys and traditional objects within the Girard Collection. For others\, the international textiles\, ceramics\, carvings and other cultural treasures in the Neutrogena Collection provide the allure.  The museum’s historic and contemporary Latino and Hispano folk art collections\, spanning the Spanish Colonial period to modern-day New Mexico\, reflect how artists respond to their time and place in ways both delightful and sobering. In 2010\, the museum opened the Mark Naylor and Dale Gunn Gallery of Conscience\, where exhibitions encourage visitors to exchange ideas on complex issues of human rights and social justice. \n 706 Camino Lejo\, on Museum Hill in Santa Fe\, NM 87505. (505) 476-1200. \nHours: 10 am to 5 pm daily\, May through October; closed Mondays November through April\, Thanksgiving\, Christmas\, and New Year’s Day. First Sunday of Every Month is free to NM Residents.

SUMMARY:Cancelled: Slow Art Day
DESCRIPTION:Slow Art Day is a global event with a simple mission: to help more people discover for themselves the joy of looking at and loving art. \nWhy slow? \nWhen people look slowly at a piece of art they make discoveries. \nThe most important discovery they make is that they can see and experience art without an expert (or expertise). \nAnd that’s an exciting discovery. It unlocks passion and creativity and helps to create more art lovers. \nHow does it work? \nOne day each year – April 4 in 2020 – people all over the world visit local museums and galleries to look at art slowly. Participants look at five works of art for 10 minutes each and then meet together over lunch to talk about their experience. That’s it. Simple by design\, the goal is to focus on the art and the art of seeing. \nIn fact\, Slow Art Day works best when people look at the art on their own slowly and then meet up to discuss the experience (though some hosts decide to do the discussion right in the gallery). \n  \nThis event is free with the cost of museum admission and will be happening throughout the galleries.  \n

This birding trip is limited to 12 participants\, so register soon! The cultural site is surely one of New Mexico’s most scenic and historically significant properties. Learn more about Los Luceros here. \n \nThe group will meet at the Los Alamos Nature Center at 6:00 AM and arrive at Los Luceros around 7:00 AM. Participants will spend half the day at the site and plan to leave by noon. SUMMARY:Cancelled: Friends of History Lecture Series "Mulattos of Cochiti: Caste and Race in Spanish Colonial New Mexico "
DESCRIPTION:This presentation examines the role of racial mixing\, identity\, and the categorizing of humans living in Spanish Colonial New Mexico. The approach will be through the lens of the casta\, or caste system. Historical research\, genealogy\, and DNA all converge to provide a clearer understanding of Hispano roots in New Mexico\, as well as in Latino-Meso America and Hispanic Europe. \nState Historian Rob Martinez is a native New Mexican born and raised in Albuquerque. A graduate of the University of New Mexico with a B.B.A. in International Business Management\, Rob went on to pursue his interest in New Mexican culture and history at UNM\, earning an M.A. in Latin American history\, with an emphasis on church\, cultural\, and social practices of the Spanish Colonial period in New Mexico. \nMr. Martinez worked for fourteen years as a research historian for the Sephardic Legacy Project\, scouring civil and church archives in New Mexico\, Mexico\, Spain\, France\, Italy\, Cuba\, and Puerto Rico\, analyzing documents for a research and publishing project about the Crypto-Jewish phenomenon in New Mexico and the Caribbean.

SUMMARY:Cancelled: Voices in Science Lecture "Micro plastics: You are what you eat" New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the voices in science lecture on Microplastics \n\n \n\nPlastics production\, usage\, and waste have risen unabated for the last 70 years.  In 2015\, there was one metric ton of plastic waste for every person on earth.  Our efforts to contain plastic waste are at their limits\, and we now see plastics in remote corners of the earth\, marine wildlife\, and in our own diets. Researchers commissioned by the World Wildlife Fund estimate that we eat a credit card’s weight in plastic every week.  Join Dr. Campen as he discusses the origins and distribution of plastics in our world\, and concerns related to human health as a result of this growing exposure. \nDr. Campen is a Regents’ Professor of Pharmaceutical Sciences at UNM College of Pharmacy.  \nHis UNM research program trains postdoctoral fellows\, graduate and undergraduate students\, and even high school students\, in toxicology and environmental health.  He has authored over 100 peer-reviewed scientific publications. His current research projects include toxicity of e-cigarettes\, placental and neurovascular alterations from particulate exposures\, and assessment of health effects from abandoned uranium mines on tribal lands in the southwest. He earned his BS (Biochemistry and Psychology) at Virginia Tech and MSPH and PhD at Univ. NC at Chapel Hill\, School of Public Health (Environmental Sciences and Engineering). Postdoctoral work at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. \n \nPrice:$8 nonmembers\, $7 members\, $5 students.\nRegister here
