SUMMARY:Herflag (online streaming event) Herflag: Collaborative Art Flag Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment
DESCRIPTION:In the interest of public health\, Marilyn has decided to cancel her live performance in Santa Fe. Instead\, she’ll be live-streaming the sewing from the Her Flag Facebook and Instagram pages at the set time of the event.  \n \nApril 30th\, 1pm (Mountain Time) \n \nInstagram link: https://www.instagram.com/herflag2020/\n \n \n \nFacebook link: https://www.facebook.com/herflag2020/\n \n \n \nNM History Museum FB link:  https://www.facebook.com/events/647980252635912/ \n\nIn 2020 America will celebrate the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment\, which opened the door to give women the right to vote. One celebration is so big it had to start in 2019! It will ultimately take 14 months to complete! This celebration is growing in size and impact as it travels to capital cities in each of the 36 states that voted to pass the amendment\, in the order in which they ratified. Ultimately this celebration will measure 18 feet in height and 26 feet in width!  This celebration is epic in every sense of the word. \nThe celebration is called Her Flag. Her Flag is a giant collaborative art flag. A work-in-progress that’s making its way across the nation\, growing stripe by stripe and state by state.  Her Flag will be in Santa Fe\, New Mexico on Thursday\, April 30th 2020. \nFounder\, artist Marilyn Artus\, sews each state’s stripe\, which was designed by a woman artist in that state\, onto the flag at a live event in each capital city. This is her “love letter” to all the men and women who worked to pass the 19th amendment and she uses it as a platform to encourage women to exercise their right that so many fought for just 100 years ago. \nNew Mexico\, the 32nd state to ratify\, will be represented by the 32nd stripe sewn onto Her Flag About Marilyn Artus and Her Flag \nAbout Marilyn Artus \nMarilyn Artus lives in Oklahoma City\, Oklahoma. She worked as a designer in the gift industry for thirteen years and in 2008 she became a full time visual artist. She has been using the American flag in her recent works and has created tribute works to Susan B. Anthony\, Victoria Woodhull\, Gloria Steinem\, Ida B. Wells\, Candy Darling and Beyoncé. Learn more about this project at www.herflag.com \n About Laurel Garcia Colvin \nLaurel Garcia Colvin’s recent work of mixed media drawings and installations uses the French 18th century designs of Toile de Jouy as the starting point. She juxtaposes the background printed fabric narrative of a pastoral past populated by idyllic figures with a foreground of contemporary situations. Homelessness\, gun violence\, women’s rights and other current social or political controversies are in direct contrast to the nostalgic\, sanitized\, leisurely decorum of these historical toile patterns. These works delve into the world of reality\, fantasy and history\, and provide a visual space to reflect on and reconsider the relationship between what remains\, what is scrapped and what is made new in society’s collective consciousness. Ms. Colvin Garcia’s work has been exhibited in galleries and art fairs in New York City and throughout the United States and Europe. Her works are in private and corporate collections throughout the United States and Europe. She received NYSCA and NEA artist funding for two separate exhibition installations. She received a Puffin Foundation Grant\, and was awarded a residency at the Constance Saltonstall Foundation for the Arts in Ithaca\, New York\, and a residency at Bullseye Glass Resource Center in Santa Fe. Ms. Colvin Garcia received her MFA and BFA from the University of Texas in Austin\, and did post-graduate studies at Pratt Institute. She was on the art faculty in the Art Department of the University of Texas in Austin before moving to New York City in 1986. She lives and maintains studios in Long Island City\, New York and Santa Fe\, New Mexico. \n“The enormous contribution of women to this country and the world has been largely ignored in various historical narratives. These women’s struggles\, often at great personal and professional cost\, against the accepted societal feminine norms of their day gave individual women today the right to vote\, the right to family planning\, the ability to speak our opinions in private and public\, the right to protect ourselves from physical and sexual attacks\, the right to own property\, and the right to pursue any career\, professional and\, or educational goals we so desire. They corrected for all of us the bias and accepted gender hierarchy stated in The Declaration of the Independence\, and made real what was stated in the approved Declaration of Sentiments read by Elizabeth Cady Stanton at the Women’s Rights Convention held in Seneca Falls\, NY in July 1848\, ‘We hold these truths to be self-evident: that all men and women are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain inalienable rights; that among these are life\, liberty\, and the pursuit of happiness; that to secure these rights governments are instituted\, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed.’ I am proud to be an artist contributor to the HERFlag Project to raise awareness of the women (and men) who helped ratify the 19th Amendment in the State of New Mexico.” –Laurel Garcia Colvin www.laurelgarciacolvin.com \nAbout Michelle Otero \nMichelle Otero is the Poet Laureate of Albuquerque and the author of Malinche’s Daughter . Herwork has appeared\, or is forthcoming\, on the Modern Love Podcast \, NPR’s Code Switch \, and in New Mexico Magazine \, Shenandoah \, and The Best of Brevity Anthology . Originally from Deming\, New Mexico\, she holds a B.A. in History from Harvard College and an MFA in Creative Writing from Vermont College. She is a member of Macondo Writer’s Workshop and a founding member of Albuquerque’s TIASO Artist Collective. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Jaguars in the Borderlands
DESCRIPTION:VOICES IN SCIENCE LECTURE – JAGUARS IN THE BORDERLANDS\n \n\n \n\n \nJoin the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science for this unique lecture in the Dyntheater.\n\n \n\nRenowned for their power\, strength\, beauty\, and grace\, jaguars are vanishing throughout the Americas. Nowhere is this more apparent than the U.S.-Mexico borderlands. Since 2002\, the Northern Jaguar Project (NJP) has been safeguarding jaguars in this region from illegal poaching\, habitat loss\, and other persistent threats. The centerpiece of NJP’s conservation work is the remote and exceedingly wild 58\,000-acre Northern Jaguar Reserve\, which boasts the highest number of northern jaguar sightings in recent years\, including females and cubs. This is a great opportunity to meet and talk with a leader in jaguar conservation. For more information about NJP\, go to https://www.northernjaguarproject.org/ \nMs. Turtle Southern\, the coordinator of the Northern Jaguar Project\, will lead you on an illustrated journey to the Northern Jaguar Reserve\, and discuss the NJP work with ranchers to minimize human-wildlife conflicts and with youth as conservation ambassadors and the work that still needs to be done. \nCost: $8 nonmembers\, $7 members\, $5 students. \nPreregistration is encouraged or tickets can be purchased at the door the evening of the event (if seats are available).   \ntickets

SUMMARY:Lecture - Los Luceros: The Story of How Our State’s Newest Historic Site Came to Fruition
DESCRIPTION:On March 28\, 2019\, Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham signed legislation designating Los Luceros (formerly a Historic Property) as a State Historic Site\, thus securing funding\, staffing\, and preservation of the site in perpetuity. \nAs a result\, Los Luceros and its complicated history have been thrust into the limelight and embraced by its visitors. Located on the picturesque banks of the northern Rio Grande\, this vast historic ranch has a rich and varied history\, beginning over seven centuries ago with the Tewa people. As a last remaining part of the original 50\,000-acre Sebastián Martín Serrano Spanish land grant\, over the centuries the property witnessed a number of pivotal events in northern New Mexico history. In the early twentieth century it was home to Mary Cabot Wheelwright\, and played a revolving role in agriculture\, art\, and culture\, and hosting both locals as well as notable visitors including Georgia O’Keefe\, Mara Chabot\, and others. \n  \nJoin Mesa Prieta Petroglyph Project for a Lecture by Ethan Ortega hosted virtually at: \nhttp://nmhistoricsites.org/virtual-classroom/los-luceros-virtual-classroom/lectureapril28

SUMMARY:cancelled--Folk Art Afternoons at the Libraries
DESCRIPTION:About the Museum of International Folk Art: http://www.internationalfolkart.org/ \nFounded in 1953 by Florence Dibell Bartlett\, the Museum of International Folk Art’s mission is to foster understanding of the traditional arts to illuminate human creativity and shape a humane world. The museum holds the world’s largest international folk art collection of more than 150\,000 objects from six continents and over 150 nations\, representing a broad range of global artists whose artistic expressions make Santa Fe an international crossroads of culture. For many visitors\, fascination with folk art begins upon seeing the whimsical toys and traditional objects within the Girard Collection. For others\, the international textiles\, ceramics\, carvings and other cultural treasures in the Neutrogena Collection provide the allure.  The museum’s historic and contemporary Latino and Hispano folk art collections\, spanning the Spanish Colonial period to modern-day New Mexico\, reflect how artists respond to their time and place in ways both delightful and sobering. In 2010\, the museum opened the Mark Naylor and Dale Gunn Gallery of Conscience\, where exhibitions encourage visitors to exchange ideas on complex issues of human rights and social justice. \n 706 Camino Lejo\, on Museum Hill in Santa Fe\, NM 87505. SUMMARY:Our Fair New Mexico: A VIRTUAL Concert Series Featuring Musician Lara Manzanares Lara Manzanares
DESCRIPTION:What: Our Fair New Mexico – A Virtual Concert Series presented by the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs in collaboration with Museum of International Folk Art (MOIFA).  \nWho: Lara Manzanares  \nWhen: Friday\, April 24\, 7 p.m. (MDT) \nWhere: MOIFA’s Facebook Page and other DCA-affiliated Facebook pages  \nLara Manzanares is a bilingual singer-songwriter of Northern New Mexican heritage. In addition to singing the traditional New Mexican canciones of her sheep-ranching childhood\, Lara also composes her own style of music in both English and Spanish. Through a combination of storytelling and songs both playful and sincere\, Lara draws on her rural New Mexican roots and her urban experiences across the U.S. and abroad as she sings about love\, loss\, a sense of place\, and her own connection to the land. \nAfter several years spent living across the U.S.\, in 2016 Lara returned to New Mexico with her guitar and several original songs in tow. In 2017 she recorded her first original album at Santa Fe’s The Kitchen Sink Studios with producer and sound engineer Jono Manson\, backed by a phenomenal cast of musicians including Mark Clark\, Justin Bransford\, Jono Manson\, Jordan Wax\, Char Rothschild\, Felix Peralta\, and Rafael Herrera. The album\, Land Baby\, contains original songs in both English and Spanish. It received several nominations at the 2018 New Mexico Music Awards and went on to win Album of the Year. \nJust like Lara’s upbringing and New Mexico itself\, her music is a complex yet deeply cohesive mixture of cultures and sounds: deeply rooted but never still\, heartfelt and humorous\, simultaneously ancient and innovative. She continues to explore her New Mexican musical heritage and write and record songs while living in the Albuquerque area. Her most recent single\, “Dear John\,” was nominated as a finalist in the Americana category at the 2019 New Mexico Music Awards. You can listen to her music learn more about Lara by visiting her website\, laramanzanares.com.

SUMMARY:Creative Mornings-(see event online link below) Literacy
DESCRIPTION:LITERACY VOLUNTEERS of SANTA FE \n \nSince 1985\, Literacy Volunteers of Santa Fe (LVSF) has been serving the community by providing literacy instruction for adults and their families. We believe that literacy is essential to improving the quality of life of individuals\, promoting economic growth\, and building an informed\, responsible citizenry.  Our purpose is to offer programs that provide free\, quality tutoring in basic literacy and English as a Second Language\, financial literacy\, health literacy\, citizenship and numeracy skills. \n \nOver the past 34 years\, LVSF has trained 4\,902 tutors\, who have provided over 504\,327 hours of instruction to help more than 13\,780 adult students obtain essential skills and reach their fullest potential. This represents volunteer contributions equivalent to over $12 million. Literacy Volunteers of Santa Fe is the only program in Santa Fe County that provides free literacy tutoring services for adults. \n \nKimberly Wiley\, President of the LVSF Board of Directors\, was born and grew up in Chicago.  She is a retired Management Consultant\, with IBM’s Global Business Services and previously with PriceWaterhouseCoopers.  She specialized in advising businesses undergoing significant change\, such as a merger\, on how to develop and implement a new business culture\, performance management systems\, and an organizational design to support their mission and values.  She received a B.A. in English from Bryn Mawr College\, and an MBA from Columbia University’s Graduate School of Business.  Her hobbies are reading\, cooking\, and traveling.  Reading has been so important in her life. Some of the best advice she ever received was from her favorite high school English teacher\, who advised her to read a book each week just for herself.  Helping others to discover the doors that being a readier can open was what motivated her to seek out Literacy Volunteers when she retired.  She has been an ESL\, Basic Literacy\, and Citizenship tutor with LVSF since February 2012\, and has been honored to help her students achieve their goals.  She joined the LVSF Board in spring of 2014 and became President of the Board in 2017. \n \nSilvia Kingsford\, Director and Student Representative on the LVSF Board of Directors\, was born and raised in Chihuahua\, Mexico. She studied at the Technological University in Chihuahua\, and in 1999\, she graduated with a degree in industrial engineering.  Silvia moved to the United States in 2001 for better opportunities\, and she soon began working at Ten Thousand Waves\, where she is currently a supervisor of spa staff.  When LVSF started offering free English classes for all employees at Ten Thousand Waves in 2017\, Silvia began studying with Susan Haase\, her tutor.  She was honored as New Mexico’s ESL student of the year at the Roundhouse. Silvia has continued her studies with Susan and is currently studying to take the United States citizenship exam.  Silvia also arranges for all of the individual and small-group English classes that LVSF conducts at Ten Thousand Waves for employees and has been a champion of the program.  In 2019 she was awarded the Literacy Advocate of the Year award at the LVSF Annual Meeting.  Silvia joined the LVSF Board in 2019 and also serves on its Development Committee. \n \nHere is the link to the April 2020 Literacy Volunteers talk: \n \nhttps://creativemornings.com/talks/the-purpose-and-passion-of-literacy-volunteers-of-santa-fe/1\n \n  \n \n

SUMMARY:Curator’s Coffee: Plastics are Forever-Reduce\, Reuse\, Recycle
DESCRIPTION:  \n \n\n \n\n \nJoin the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science for Curator’s Coffee panel discussion on plastics. Plastic pollution is past the tipping point; it is now considered one of the largest environmental threats facing humans and animals globally.  We now see plastic litter everywhere on Earth and in our own diets. Plastic doesn’t degrade\, it just breaks down into smaller and smaller pieces.  We are already bearing cleanup costs of mountains of plastic waste and it will get worse for future generations. We have a good recycling program in Albuquerque…but where can all of the plastic waste ultimately go? And how can we reduce our plastic use?\n\n \n\nKick-off the week of the 50th Anniversary of Earth Day with this event. Join us for light refreshments and morning of conversation with dedicated local experts about the state of plastic recycling and creative solutions used to reduce the amount of material entering landfills in New Mexico.  Learn how other areas are responding to the plastic waste crisis\, and what can be done locally.  \nSpeakers: Sarah Pierpont\, Executive Director of the New Mexico Recycling Coalition\, Jill Holbert\, Associate Director City of ABQ Solid Waste Management Department\, Rachel Zulevi\,  a “zero-waste lifestyle\, and Jonathan Black\,  a Senior Policy Advisor for U.S. Senator Tom Udall (D-NM) on energy and environmental issues.    \nCost: $8 ($7 for members\, $5 for students) includes museum admission (including the exhibit Sayaka Ganz: Reclaimed Creations and refreshments. Preregistration required. Seats are limited. (NOTE that the starting time is earlier than other Curator’s Coffees)  \nTickets here

SUMMARY:Cancelled: Family Mornings at Folk Art
(505) 476-1200. \nHours: 10 am to 5 pm daily\, May through October; closed Mondays November through April\, Thanksgiving\, Christmas\, and New Year’s Day. First Sunday of Every Month is free to NM Residents.

SUMMARY:Cancelled: Slow Art Day
DESCRIPTION:Slow Art Day is a global event with a simple mission: to help more people discover for themselves the joy of looking at and loving art. \nWhy slow? \nWhen people look slowly at a piece of art they make discoveries. \nThe most important discovery they make is that they can see and experience art without an expert (or expertise). \nAnd that’s an exciting discovery. It unlocks passion and creativity and helps to create more art lovers. \nHow does it work? \nOne day each year – April 4 in 2020 – people all over the world visit local museums and galleries to look at art slowly. Participants look at five works of art for 10 minutes each and then meet together over lunch to talk about their experience. That’s it. Simple by design\, the goal is to focus on the art and the art of seeing. \nIn fact\, Slow Art Day works best when people look at the art on their own slowly and then meet up to discuss the experience (though some hosts decide to do the discussion right in the gallery). \n  \nThis event is free with the cost of museum admission and will be happening throughout the galleries.  \n

SUMMARY:Cancelled: Friends of History Lecture Series "Mulattos of Cochiti: Caste and Race in Spanish Colonial New Mexico "
DESCRIPTION:This presentation examines the role of racial mixing\, identity\, and the categorizing of humans living in Spanish Colonial New Mexico. The approach will be through the lens of the casta\, or caste system. Historical research\, genealogy\, and DNA all converge to provide a clearer understanding of Hispano roots in New Mexico\, as well as in Latino-Meso America and Hispanic Europe. \nState Historian Rob Martinez is a native New Mexican born and raised in Albuquerque. A graduate of the University of New Mexico with a B.B.A. in International Business Management\, Rob went on to pursue his interest in New Mexican culture and history at UNM\, earning an M.A. in Latin American history\, with an emphasis on church\, cultural\, and social practices of the Spanish Colonial period in New Mexico. \nMr. Martinez worked for fourteen years as a research historian for the Sephardic Legacy Project\, scouring civil and church archives in New Mexico\, Mexico\, Spain\, France\, Italy\, Cuba\, and Puerto Rico\, analyzing documents for a research and publishing project about the Crypto-Jewish phenomenon in New Mexico and the Caribbean.
