SUMMARY:Arts Alive kits at the Southside Library 12-5:30 pm
DESCRIPTION:While the museum is closed\, we invite you to explore and learn with our Folk Art Lesson plans and fun and creative DIY art projects for families and teachers! Find all our Online Resources here! \nAbout the Museum of International Folk Art: http://www.internationalfolkart.org/ \nFounded in 1953 by Florence Dibell Bartlett\, the Museum of International Folk Art’s mission is to foster understanding of the traditional arts to illuminate human creativity and shape a humane world. The museum holds the world’s largest international folk art collection of more than 150\,000 objects from six continents and over 150 nations\, representing a broad range of global artists whose artistic expressions make Santa Fe an international crossroads of culture. For many visitors\, fascination with folk art begins upon seeing the whimsical toys and traditional objects within the Girard Collection. For others\, the international textiles\, ceramics\, carvings and other cultural treasures in the Neutrogena Collection provide the allure.  The museum’s historic and contemporary Latino and Hispano folk art collections\, spanning the Spanish Colonial period to modern-day New Mexico\, reflect how artists respond to their time and place in ways both delightful and sobering. In 2010\, the museum opened the Mark Naylor and Dale Gunn Gallery of Conscience\, where exhibitions encourage visitors to exchange ideas on complex issues of human rights and social justice. \n 706 Camino Lejo\, on Museum Hill in Santa Fe\, NM 87505. SUMMARY:Cancelled: Young Artists Balancing Tradition with Contemporary Expression A Friends of Indian Art Member Event
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a panel discussion on the challenges and difficulties facing three young artists as they express their vision through contemporary art while honoring their heritage and culture.  Terran Last Gun (Blackfeet) works in printmaking\, photography\, and painting.  He is best known for his bold\, geometric works that reflect his Blackfeet history and cultural narratives.  Del Curfman (Crow) is a painter known for his work with tribal imagery and cultural exploration.  He investigates his heritage\, tradition and humanity through his oil paintings.  George Alexander (Muskogee) is an artist who has created a thought-provoking body of work influenced by his deep appreciation of his own culture.  The imagery he uses comes from his own ideas and how he views the world as he wishes it to be. \nPlease note that you must be a member of the Friends of Indian Art in order to participate in FIA events. You can learn more about joining the friends group by visiting its page on the Museum of New Mexico Foundation’s website. \n

SUMMARY:Bears Ears: The Vision for an Indigenous National Monument a Zoom lecture with Angelo Baca
DESCRIPTION:Based on a film about Bears Ears\, this talk with Angelo Baca (Navajo / Hopi) ties together many different strands of Utah Navajo culture and history\, San Juan county politics\, Navajo Nation involvement in the region\, and anthropological research. It seeks to cover a basic introduction to the importance of the landscape of the Indigenous people by the Indigenous peoples of that region. Of course\, it is only a foundation from which to examine a particular perspective – the Indigenous perspective – and it often is not given serious consideration\, or left out entirely. The project tells the story through an Indigenous lens. \nOn June 24 at Noon\, go to following link: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/85765496689

SUMMARY:CANCELED: The Quilt Project: How Art Translates Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women A Friends of Indian Art Member Event
DESCRIPTION:The Red Quilt Solidarity Project (RQSP) is a national initiative to raise awareness of violence against women and children with a focus on Missing/Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG). The RQSP is open to all people who wish to speak out about violence against women and children all over the world. The RQSP was initiated by Tina Sparks as her BFA Senior Project at the Institute of American Indian Arts. The project was publicly launched in February\, 2019\, and has received numerous panel contributions from across the country. The intention for this project is to be a visual voice to evoke visibility\, funding and change for issues surrounding violence against women and children. The long-term goal for the Red Quilt Solidarity Project is to transport and display the quilts/panels on the national mall in Washington\, DC\, much like the AIDS quilt in the 1980’s. Tonight’s event will be a collaborative presentation of information surrounding issues of Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women initiating and inviting community conversation. \nPlease note that you must be a member of the Friends of Indian Art in order to participate in FIA events. You can learn more about joining the friends group by visiting its page on the Museum of New Mexico Foundation’s website.

SUMMARY:Reflections on Counterculture in the Southwest A Virtual Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Voices of Counterculture in the Southwest co-curators Meredith Schweitzer and Jack Loeffler revisit the making of the 2017-2018 exhibit on the occasion of the release of a virtual version of the exhibit. \n \nView the discussion here.\nYou are invited to move through the virtual exhibition at your own pace by using this link: https://my.matterport.com/show/?m=32czx9Mmbgs \nVoices of Counterculture in the Southwest was an exhibition in the Herzstein Gallery at the New Mexico History Museum from May 14\, 2017 through February 11\, 2018\, and lives on today in a virtual format captured by 3D photography. This virtual version of the exhibition highlights the counterculture movement of the 1960s and 70s in the American Southwest. \nBy 1967\, and the “Summer of Love\,” New Mexico was experiencing its own counterculture movement. Issues of social and political justice\, national identity and social norms triggered activism and a search for alternative living situations across the country. Counterculture may be best described by Gary Snyder who speaks of the movement as the “discovering of another choice\, another path away from capitalism other than European Marxist enlightenment ideas.” Through archival footage\, oral histories\, photography\, and artifacts\, Voices of Counterculture in the Southwest examines this era of social\, cultural\, political\, and environmental activism. \nThe New Mexico History Museum would like to thank: \nMeridith Davidson Jack Loeffler Lisa Hinson The Museum of New Mexico Foundation \n \n

SUMMARY:LIVE STREAMING Family Mornings at Folk Art
