SUMMARY:New Technology in Art: Innovation at the Institute of American Indian Arts A Friends of Indian Art Member Event
DESCRIPTION:Innovation has been a tradition in Native arts from the very beginning. Indigenous cultures have adopted whatever materials or technologies have been available to speak about the things those cultures held most important. From pre-contact ceramic work and shell carving\, to the use of trade-beads and European metalworking technologies\, to our current era of digital design and fabrication\, Native artists have embraced the most current and cutting edge tools to create works of art that speak to the issues that face their people. The Digital Fabrication Lab at the Institute of American Indian Arts\, in coordination with its other studios\, is working to put those tools into the hands of the next generation of innovative Indigenous artists. The work being produced in conjunction with the IAIA FabLab\, from students\, staff\, faculty\, and artists-in-residence\, spans an incredibly diverse set of materials\, topics\, and practices\, continuing the long and storied tradition of artistic innovation in Native art. We will hear from Brian Fleetwood (Muscogee/Creek)\, Assistant Professor in Studio Art at IAIA.  \nPlease note that you must be a member of the Friends of Indian Art in order to participate in FIA events. You can learn more about about joining the friends group by visiting its page on the Museum of New Mexico Foundation’s website.

SUMMARY:Virtual Family Mornings at Folk Art
DESCRIPTION:The Museum is currently closed due to COVID-19 precautions\, please visit our online resources page for online exhibits\, experiences and recources http://moifa.org/visit/online.html  \nAbout the Museum of International Folk Art: http://www.internationalfolkart.org/   \nFounded in 1953 by Florence Dibell Bartlett\, the Museum of International Folk Art’s mission is to foster understanding of the traditional arts to illuminate human creativity and shape a humane world. The museum holds the world’s largest international folk art collection of more than 150\,000 objects from six continents and over 150 nations\, representing a broad range of global artists whose artistic expressions make Santa Fe an international crossroads of culture. For many visitors\, fascination with folk art begins upon seeing the whimsical toys and traditional objects within the Girard Collection. For others\, the international textiles\, ceramics\, carvings and other cultural treasures in the Neutrogena Collection provide the allure.  The museum’s historic and contemporary Latino and Hispano folk art collections\, spanning the Spanish Colonial period to modern-day New Mexico\, reflect how artists respond to their time and place in ways both delightful and sobering. In 2010\, the museum opened the Mark Naylor and Dale Gunn Gallery of Conscience\, where exhibitions encourage visitors to exchange ideas on complex issues of human rights and social justice. \n 706 Camino Lejo\, on Museum Hill in Santa Fe\, NM 87505. SUMMARY:VIRTUAL EVENT: Summer Letters From the Reservation
DESCRIPTION:Summer Letters from the Reservation is a collection of archival letters and oral stories from Fort Sumner Historic Site that describes the mindset of the United States Government towards Tribal polices in the American Southwest and the daily tribulations experienced by the Navajo and the Mescalero Apache in the months of June through August (1863-1868) while held captive on the Bosque Redondo Indian Reservation. These summer letters and oral stories\, read in chronological order by Historic Sites staff and volunteers from around the world\, reveal a micro-history of the failed experiment that was Fort Sumner and a moment in time when humanity was lost.  Each letter/oral history is accompanied by photographs\, newspaper clippings\, and other artifacts to help tell the story.  We encourage you to interact with the objects on every page.  \nJoin in now and listen to history unfold.. \nhttp://nmhistoricsites.org/bosque-redondo/virtual-events/letters

SUMMARY:Friends of History Lecture Series (Online) Blurred Borders-
DESCRIPTION:This lecture will focus on the forgotten Chihene Apache farming experiment at Sabinal\, New Mexico from 1790-1795 by placing it in the context of Apache-Spanish relations and Spanish Indian policy.  In response to drought and military pressure\, thousands of Apaches de paz settled near Spanish presidios after 1786 in a system of reservation-like establecimientos\, or settlements\, stretching from Laredo to Tucson.  On paper\, the establecimientos constituted the earliest and most extensive set of military-run reservations in the Americas. Yet\, Apaches de paz typically exhibited mixed loyalties\, sometimes serving Spanish interests\, and other times subverting them\, demonstrating the limits of indigenous assimilation into imperial states.  \n \nMatthew Babcock is Associate Professor of History at the University of North Texas at Dallas and the author of Apache Adaptation to Hispanic Rule\, published by Cambridge University Press in 2016.  He earned his Ph.D. from Southern Methodist University\, his M.A. from the University of New Mexico\, and his B.A. from Dartmouth College.  His research focuses on the history of North American borderlands\, American Indians\, and the colonial Southwest.

SUMMARY:Breaking Down Cardboard Boxes: How Archaeology Can Erase Histories and How It Can Reveal Them with Dr. Lewis Borck
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Lewis Borck studies the material histories of the past peoples in the American Southwest and the Caribbean. He is particularly interested in how social movements and contentious politics shaped religion and politics through time as well as how modern politics and worldviews recreate the histories and ideas of the “West” in the Indigenous past. \nFor this talk\, Dr. Borck will explore how archaeologists and historians create history\, how that can erase the history of commoners\, particularly of their politics and revolutions. He will use 15 years of research in the Gallina region of New Mexico\, including a current field school\, as a case study to contextualize many of these ideas. Link to access lecture at 6pm on Wednesday\, July 29: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/84209568860

SUMMARY:Arts Alive kits at the Southside Library 12-5:30 pm
DESCRIPTION:While the museum is closed\, we invite you to explore and learn with our Folk Art Lesson plans and fun and creative DIY art projects for families and teachers! Find all our Online Resources here! \nAbout the Museum of International Folk Art: http://www.internationalfolkart.org/ \nFounded in 1953 by Florence Dibell Bartlett\, the Museum of International Folk Art’s mission is to foster understanding of the traditional arts to illuminate human creativity and shape a humane world. SUMMARY:Cancelled: Young Artists Balancing Tradition with Contemporary Expression A Friends of Indian Art Member Event
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a panel discussion on the challenges and difficulties facing three young artists as they express their vision through contemporary art while honoring their heritage and culture.  Terran Last Gun (Blackfeet) works in printmaking\, photography\, and painting.  He is best known for his bold\, geometric works that reflect his Blackfeet history and cultural narratives.  Del Curfman (Crow) is a painter known for his work with tribal imagery and cultural exploration.  He investigates his heritage\, tradition and humanity through his oil paintings.  George Alexander (Muskogee) is an artist who has created a thought-provoking body of work influenced by his deep appreciation of his own culture.  The imagery he uses comes from his own ideas and how he views the world as he wishes it to be. \nPlease note that you must be a member of the Friends of Indian Art in order to participate in FIA events.
