SUMMARY:Friends of Folk Art World of Treasures Online Auction
DESCRIPTION:From November 19-22\, 2020\, Friends of Folk Art (FOFA)\, in partnership with the Museum of New Mexico Foundation\, will host World of Treasures\, an online auction of collectors’ quality folk art\, fine art\, and distinctive experiences that will appeal to all tastes and budgets. More than 100 items will be offered – ranging from intricately crafted jewelry and finely made textiles and clothing\, to folk ceramics\, paintings\, and more. Fun and unusual personal experiences (to be scheduled post-COVID) include vacation home stays in Mexico and New Mexico; two night’s stay at Santa Fe’s famed luxury Inn of The Five Graces; dinner with local celebrity chefs\, including James Beard Award-winner Cheryl Alters Jamison (author of “Texas Q: 100 Recipes for the Very Best Barbecue from the Lone Star State\, All Smoke-Cooked to Perfection”); and a rare VIP tour of private museum vaults with MOIFA Executive Director Khristaan Villela. \nIn response to today’s virtual learning climate\, MOIFA has enhanced its online education offerings and initiated a project to reach school-age children and their families by distributing Folk Art Kits in a partnership with the Santa Fe Public Library. The kits include all the materials children need to create their own folk art projects. More than 3\,800 area children have participated in this innovative outreach program. The World of Treasures auction will include opportunities to underwrite these kits\, support expanded development of online programs\, and help MOIFA acquire special items for upcoming exhibitions. \nThe Folk Art Flea\, launched in 2008\, has raised more than $507\,000 to support museum programs. Revenue has been substantially reduced this year due to the museum’s six-month temporary closing to the public\, a reduced budget from the State of New Mexico\, a drop in donor giving\, and cancellation of the Folk Art Flea. All proceeds from the auction will support the museum’s exhibition and expanded outreach programs for all ages. \nFor more information\, please contact Jo Ann Ward at 505-780-5191 or joanndewingward@yahoo.com \n \n\n \nWhat: Friends of Folk Art World of Treasures Online Auction\n \nWho: Friends of Folk Art\, benefiting the Museum of International Folk Art’s Education and Exhibition Programs \n \nWhen: 9 a.m. MST on November 19\, 2020 – 5 p.m. on November 22\, 2020\n \nWhere: Online at http://bidpal.net/worldoftreasure

SUMMARY:Virtual Family Mornings at Folk Art
DESCRIPTION:Please visit our online resources page for online exhibits\, experiences and recources http://moifa.org/visit/online.html  \nAbout the Museum of International Folk Art: http://www.internationalfolkart.org/ \nFounded in 1953 by Florence Dibell Bartlett\, the Museum of International Folk Art’s mission is to foster understanding of the traditional arts to illuminate human creativity and shape a humane world. The museum holds the world’s largest international folk art collection of more than 150\,000 objects from six continents and over 150 nations\, representing a broad range of global artists whose artistic expressions make Santa Fe an international crossroads of culture. For many visitors\, fascination with folk art begins upon seeing the whimsical toys and traditional objects within the Girard Collection. For others\, the international textiles\, ceramics\, carvings and other cultural treasures in the Neutrogena Collection provide the allure.  The museum’s historic and contemporary Latino and Hispano folk art collections\, spanning the Spanish Colonial period to modern-day New Mexico\, reflect how artists respond to their time and place in ways both delightful and sobering. In 2010\, the museum opened the Mark Naylor and Dale Gunn Gallery of Conscience\, where exhibitions encourage visitors to exchange ideas on complex issues of human rights and social justice. \n 706 Camino Lejo\, on Museum Hill in Santa Fe\, NM 87505. SUMMARY:New Technology in Art: Innovation at the Institute of American Indian Arts A Friends of Indian Art Member Event
DESCRIPTION:Innovation has been a tradition in Native arts from the very beginning. Indigenous cultures have adopted whatever materials or technologies have been available to speak about the things those cultures held most important. From pre-contact ceramic work and shell carving\, to the use of trade-beads and European metalworking technologies\, to our current era of digital design and fabrication\, Native artists have embraced the most current and cutting edge tools to create works of art that speak to the issues that face their people. The Digital Fabrication Lab at the Institute of American Indian Arts\, in coordination with its other studios\, is working to put those tools into the hands of the next generation of innovative Indigenous artists. The work being produced in conjunction with the IAIA FabLab\, from students\, staff\, faculty\, and artists-in-residence\, spans an incredibly diverse set of materials\, topics\, and practices\, continuing the long and storied tradition of artistic innovation in Native art. We will hear from Brian Fleetwood (Muscogee/Creek)\, Assistant Professor in Studio Art at IAIA.  \nPlease note that you must be a member of the Friends of Indian Art in order to participate in FIA events. You can learn more about about joining the friends group by visiting its page on the Museum of New Mexico Foundation’s website.

SUMMARY:Virtual Family Mornings at Folk Art
DESCRIPTION:The Museum is currently closed due to COVID-19 precautions\, please visit our online resources page for online exhibits\, experiences and recources http://moifa.org/visit/online.html  \nAbout the Museum of International Folk Art: http://www.internationalfolkart.org/ \nFounded in 1953 by Florence Dibell Bartlett\, the Museum of International Folk Art’s mission is to foster understanding of the traditional arts to illuminate human creativity and shape a humane world. SUMMARY:VIRTUAL EVENT: Summer Letters From the Reservation
DESCRIPTION:Summer Letters from the Reservation is a collection of archival letters and oral stories from Fort Sumner Historic Site that describes the mindset of the United States Government towards Tribal polices in the American Southwest and the daily tribulations experienced by the Navajo and the Mescalero Apache in the months of June through August (1863-1868) while held captive on the Bosque Redondo Indian Reservation. These summer letters and oral stories\, read in chronological order by Historic Sites staff and volunteers from around the world\, reveal a micro-history of the failed experiment that was Fort Sumner and a moment in time when humanity was lost.  Each letter/oral history is accompanied by photographs\, newspaper clippings\, and other artifacts to help tell the story.  We encourage you to interact with the objects on every page.  \nJoin in now and listen to history unfold.. \nhttp://nmhistoricsites.org/bosque-redondo/virtual-events/letters
