SUMMARY:Música Buena: Yuletide Traditions in New Mexico in conjunction with Música Buena: Celebrating Music in New Mexico
DESCRIPTION:New Mexico’s musical and dramatic traditions that are celebrated during the holiday season developed over hundreds of years beginning with traditions in medieval Spain that were then brought to the colonies. Here in New Mexico each has developed with local and regional influences. The Matachines dances are performed by the Hispano\, Pueblo and Genízaro people of New Mexico. Throughout the state the Matachines dances and ceremonies are enjoyed on December 12\, Feast Day of Our Immaculate Conception and Our Lady of Guadalupe and are also performed in many locations on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. Las Posadas (The Inns) and Los Pastores (The Shepherds) are performed during the advent period leading up the Christmas Eve and Christmas day. Two traditions ringing in the New Year are the Los Comanches dances in Ranchos de Taos and the celebration of Día de los Manueles (The Day of Immanuel)\, or Dar los Días (The Giving of Days) in which houses are serenaded with music and dance to welcome the New Year\, the latter are accompanied by the symbolic killing of the old year. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Free Virtual Family Mornings at Folk Art Story Time and
DESCRIPTION:The Museum is currently closed due to COVID-19 precautions\, please visit our online resources page for online exhibits\, experiences and recources http://moifa.org/visit/online.html  \nAbout the Museum of International Folk Art: http://www.internationalfolkart.org/   \nFounded in 1953 by Florence Dibell Bartlett\, the Museum of International Folk Art’s mission is to foster understanding of the traditional arts to illuminate human creativity and shape a humane world. The museum holds the world’s largest international folk art collection of more than 150\,000 objects from six continents and over 150 nations\, representing a broad range of global artists whose artistic expressions make Santa Fe an international crossroads of culture. For many visitors\, fascination with folk art begins upon seeing the whimsical toys and traditional objects within the Girard Collection. For others\, the international textiles\, ceramics\, carvings and other cultural treasures in the Neutrogena Collection provide the allure.  The museum’s historic and contemporary Latino and Hispano folk art collections\, spanning the Spanish Colonial period to modern-day New Mexico\, reflect how artists respond to their time and place in ways both delightful and sobering. In 2010\, the museum opened the Mark Naylor and Dale Gunn Gallery of Conscience\, where exhibitions encourage visitors to exchange ideas on complex issues of human rights and social justice. \n 706 Camino Lejo\, on Museum Hill in Santa Fe\, NM 87505. SUMMARY:Friends of History Lecture Series (Online) Recasting the Vote: How Women of Color Transformed the Suffrage Movement
DESCRIPTION:Cathleen Cahill will tell the powerful stories of a multiracial group of activists who propelled the national suffrage movement toward a more inclusive vision of equal rights. \n \nMost suffrage stories are centered in the East and the Southwest as an afterthought at best. But Cahill asks what happens when we refocus the lens to center the stories in NM and the wider region? This talk reveals that suddenly our suffrage history is more diverse and more complicated than we anticipated. \n \nShe will especially focus on New Mexico by exploring the important role of Spanish-speaking suffragists\, the activism of African American women\, and the debate over the Native American right to vote.  With suffragists of color in the foreground\, Cahill will recast the suffrage movement as an unfinished struggle that extended beyond the ratification of the Nineteenth Amendment. \n \nCathleen D. Cahill is associate professor of history at Penn State University and the author of Federal Fathers and Mothers: A Social History of the United States Indian Service\, 1869–1933\, winner of the 2011 Labriola Center American Indian National Book Award and finalist for the 2012 David J. Weber-Clements Prize\, Western History Association. \n \nView lecture here.

SUMMARY:Friends of Folk Art World of Treasures Online Auction
DESCRIPTION:From November 19-22\, 2020\, Friends of Folk Art (FOFA)\, in partnership with the Museum of New Mexico Foundation\, will host World of Treasures\, an online auction of collectors’ quality folk art\, fine art\, and distinctive experiences that will appeal to all tastes and budgets. More than 100 items will be offered – ranging from intricately crafted jewelry and finely made textiles and clothing\, to folk ceramics\, paintings\, and more. Fun and unusual personal experiences (to be scheduled post-COVID) include vacation home stays in Mexico and New Mexico; two night’s stay at Santa Fe’s famed luxury Inn of The Five Graces; dinner with local celebrity chefs\, including James Beard Award-winner Cheryl Alters Jamison (author of “Texas Q: 100 Recipes for the Very Best Barbecue from the Lone Star State\, All Smoke-Cooked to Perfection”); and a rare VIP tour of private museum vaults with MOIFA Executive Director Khristaan Villela. \nIn response to today’s virtual learning climate\, MOIFA has enhanced its online education offerings and initiated a project to reach school-age children and their families by distributing Folk Art Kits in a partnership with the Santa Fe Public Library. The kits include all the materials children need to create their own folk art projects. More than 3\,800 area children have participated in this innovative outreach program. The World of Treasures auction will include opportunities to underwrite these kits\, support expanded development of online programs\, and help MOIFA acquire special items for upcoming exhibitions. \nThe Folk Art Flea\, launched in 2008\, has raised more than $507\,000 to support museum programs. Revenue has been substantially reduced this year due to the museum’s six-month temporary closing to the public\, a reduced budget from the State of New Mexico\, a drop in donor giving\, and cancellation of the Folk Art Flea. All proceeds from the auction will support the museum’s exhibition and expanded outreach programs for all ages. \nFor more information\, please contact Jo Ann Ward at 505-780-5191 or joanndewingward@yahoo.com \n \n\n \nWhat: Friends of Folk Art World of Treasures Online Auction\n \nWho: Friends of Folk Art\, benefiting the Museum of International Folk Art’s Education and Exhibition Programs \n \nWhen: 9 a.m. MST on November 19\, 2020 – 5 p.m. on November 22\, 2020\n \nWhere: Online at http://bidpal.net/worldoftreasure

SUMMARY:Virtual Family Mornings at Folk Art
DESCRIPTION:Please visit our online resources page for online exhibits\, experiences and recources http://moifa.org/visit/online.html  \nAbout the Museum of International Folk Art: http://www.internationalfolkart.org/ \nFounded in 1953 by Florence Dibell Bartlett\, the Museum of International Folk Art’s mission is to foster understanding of the traditional arts to illuminate human creativity and shape a humane world. SUMMARY:New Technology in Art: Innovation at the Institute of American Indian Arts A Friends of Indian Art Member Event
DESCRIPTION:Innovation has been a tradition in Native arts from the very beginning. Indigenous cultures have adopted whatever materials or technologies have been available to speak about the things those cultures held most important. From pre-contact ceramic work and shell carving\, to the use of trade-beads and European metalworking technologies\, to our current era of digital design and fabrication\, Native artists have embraced the most current and cutting edge tools to create works of art that speak to the issues that face their people. The Digital Fabrication Lab at the Institute of American Indian Arts\, in coordination with its other studios\, is working to put those tools into the hands of the next generation of innovative Indigenous artists. The work being produced in conjunction with the IAIA FabLab\, from students\, staff\, faculty\, and artists-in-residence\, spans an incredibly diverse set of materials\, topics\, and practices\, continuing the long and storied tradition of artistic innovation in Native art. We will hear from Brian Fleetwood (Muscogee/Creek)\, Assistant Professor in Studio Art at IAIA.  \nPlease note that you must be a member of the Friends of Indian Art in order to participate in FIA events. You can learn more about about joining the friends group by visiting its page on the Museum of New Mexico Foundation’s website.
