SUMMARY:Friends of History Wednesday Lecture Series Hoofbeats through History:  The Story of the Horse in New Mexico
DESCRIPTION:When we think of New Mexico history\, we sometimes forget that the humans in the narrative have often been dependent on their equine companions. The influence of New Mexico on the history of the horse in the Americas is both fascinating and profound. From the pre-historic ancestors of the horse found here millions of years ago\, the first horse breeding and racing in the Americas\, the introduction of the horse to Native Americans and the subsequent development of some of the greatest horse cultures in history\, New Mexico is arguably the most significant state when it comes to the history of the horse in the U.S.   \n  \nA horse lover since birth\, Cynthia Culbertson is proud to have served as a consultant for multiple museum exhibitions featuring horses. She served as co-curator of an exhibition at the International Museum of the Horse featuring artifacts from 27 museums around the world\, including such prestigious institutions as the British Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She has also served as a consultant for the equine components of many other projects\, including a UNESCO World Heritage museum. Cynthia is the author of several books on the subject of Arabian horses and is a regular contributor to international equine media. SUMMARY:Will Shuster and Carlsbad Caverns with Lois Manno and Christian Waguespack  A Livestream Talk Hosted by the New Mexico Museum of Art
DESCRIPTION:Carlsbad Caverns is one of New Mexico’s most renowned geological locations. Following its designation as a National Monument in 1923\, painter Will Shuster\, true to his adventurous spirit\, was one of the first artists to capture the magnificence of the caves. The next year\, he and fellow artist Walter Mruk made the trip to Carlsbad Caverns\, where they were lowered into the cavern by bucket and painted by the light of lamps. Shuster was intent on capturing the geology of the caverns in a vibrant\, Technicolor fashion. \nWhen the New Mexico Museum of Art (MOA) displayed the Carlsbad paintings in 1925\, a reviewer called them the “most extraordinary paintings shown here in a decade.” Shuster and Mruk’s were among the earliest artistic renderings of Carlsbad Caverns\, the beauty and majesty of which has continued to enchant generations. \nA Fiery Light: Will Shuster’s New Mexico\, which is on view through July 25\, 2021\, includes work from Shuster’s time in Carlsbad Caverns. The exhibition also explores the legacy he developed in Santa Fe and elsewhere throughout New Mexico and emphasizes the significant artistic relationships he forged in the state.  \nTo give visitors a deeper look at the exhibition\, MOA will host a live-stream talk via Zoom\, featuring curator\, artist\, and caver Lois Manno at 6 p.m. MDT on April 1\, 2021. The author of Visions Underground: Carlsbad Caverns through the Artist’s Eye\, Manno will explore the long history of artists working at Carlsbad Caverns\, including Will Shuster.Christian Waguespack\, curator of A Fiery Light\, will also be in attendance to add his expertise to the discussion.     \nViewers will also be treated to some of the current artistic and conservation work going on at Carlsbad Caverns National Park. A long-time volunteer with Carlsbad Caverns\, Manno is a Fellow of the Cave Research Foundation\, a Fellow of the National Speleological Society\, and a founding member of the Society’s Fine Arts Salon. DESCRIPTION:Film Synopsis: \n“And Those Who Dance it Surrender Their Hearts to Each Other is a portrait of Lone Piñon\, a Northern New Mexican string band celebrating their region’s cultural roots. With fiddles\, upright bass\, accordions\, vihuela\, mandolin\, guitars\, jarana huasteca\, and vocals in Spanish\, English\, Nahuatl and P’urepecha\, they play a wide spectrum of the traditional music that is at home in New Mexico. The musicians have learned from elder musicians (such as Antonia Apodaca) who instilled in them a respect for continuity of the community based social and dance music. Noah Martinez\, Jordan Wax\, Leticia Gonzales and Greg Glassman have brought the language of New Mexico traditional music and related regional traditions back onto the modern stage\, back onto dance floors\, and back into the ears of a young generation.” \n“The group played with great energy\, authenticity\, and devotion… a nice variety of old-time Mexican musical rhythms. I really dug right into the first cut (in the film)…”— Chris Strachwitz\, founder of Arhoolie Records \n  \nArtist Bios: \nCody Edison grew up in Idaho and he currently resides in Los Angeles\, California. In 2012\, he received his BFA in photography and media from CalArts. The discovery of Harry Smith’s Anthology of American Folk Music became both a cultural gold mine and practical one. Edison co-produced Re-Envisioning America (2010-2012)\, a multi-media homage to the Anthology with colleagues at CalArts. These productions were widely hailed as among the most significant tributes to American music that the CalArts community had ever seen or heard. Following the sucesss of this project Edison became dedicated to filming performances of regional roots musicians who are renewing and preserving folk traditions in North America. And Those Who Dance it Surrender Their Hearts to Each Other (2018) received the Best Documentary Feature Award from the Cinema on the Bayou Film Festival in Louisiana. It has screened in Mexico\, Canada and widely through out the United States. In 2021\, the film was added to the permanent collections of the Museum of International Folk Art in Santa Fe\, New Mexico and the Library of Congress (American Folklife Center) in Washington\, D.C. \n  \nJordan Wax (violin\, piano- and three-row accordions\, mandolin\, guitar\, vocals) grew up in Missouri and was traditionally trained by master Ozark fiddler Fred Stoneking and Central Missouri dance fiddler John White.  He worked as bandleader and accordionist for a Yiddish dance band for years before his work with Missouri and New Mexican fiddle styles inspired him to travel to Mexico for a 6-month immersion in Mexican huapango fiddling\, where he learned from Rolando “El Quecho” Hernández of Trio Chicontepec\, Casimiro Granillo of Trio Chicamole\, and a variety of local fiddlers in the Huasteca region of San Luis Potosí.  His studies of traditional New Mexico dance music have been guided and inspired in the past years by Tomas Maes (mandolinist of Santa Fe\, NM) and Antonia Apodaca (accordionist and guitarist of Rociada\, NM). In 2018 he travelled to Morelia\, Michoacán for a few weeks of intensive study with master son calentano violinist Serafin Ibarra Cortez and P’urepecha elder and composer Tata Pedro Dimas. \n  \nTanya Nuñez (upright bass\, guitar\, vocals) was born in southern New Mexico. Growing up in a musical family\, no celebration was complete without music and dance: rancheras\, polkas\, valses and cumbias.  She has worked as a bassist in a variety of traditions from classical\, tango\, Persian and Arabic\, to country\, rock and funk/soul. Though she plays many styles\, the beautiful and diverse music of the Southwest US and Mexico holds a special place in her heart and she is honored to study and share it. \n  \n\n\n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:Breath. It is one of the first things we do in life and one of the last\, but in between we generally don’t give it much thought. In this exhibition\, contemporary artists find inventive ways to express this fundamental and elusive act by measuring it\, scanning it\, enclosing it\, evoking it\, and reminding us of our own vulnerability.  \nSeveral artists approach the subject from a personal\, meditative perspective while others consider the scientific and social justice ramifications\, directly addressing threats to breath that have been at the forefront of public consciousness over the past year\, including the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic and the use of choke-holds as a method of restraint for people of color.  \nIncluded are more than forty-five drawings\, installations\, photographs\, sculpture\, and video by artists Stuart Allen\, Linda Alterwitz\, Dan Estabrook\, Brian Finke\, David S. SUMMARY:Friends of History Lecture Series Royal A. Prentice: Pioneer Archaeologist in Eastern New Mexico
DESCRIPTION:Richard Ford\, Allison Colborne\, and Gary Hein have undertaken a study of Royal A. Prentice\,  an early  volunteer who contributed valuable archaeological information to the Museum of New Mexico in the first three decades of the 20th century.  Although he published several useful research papers during those years in El Palacio\, the quarterly magazine of the Museum of New Mexico\, Prentice remains generally unknown today. The presentation will provide an overview of his life focusing on his archaeological research\, stressing that the value of this work has earned him a well-deserved place in the history of New Mexico archaeology.   Our three speakers are presently associated with the Museum of New Mexico as staff or as research associates. Their aim is to publish their work in El Palacio. Knowing how much the museums and other cultural institutions in Santa Fe depend upon volunteers\, their goal is to highlight the accomplishments of one such volunteer\, Royal A. SUMMARY:Friends of History Lecture Series (Online) The Smallpox Pandemic of 1779-84
DESCRIPTION:The talk will trace the spread of the great smallpox epidemic that broke out in Mexico in 1779\, traveled north to New Mexico\, was transmitted from tribe to tribe across the American West\, and reached eastern Canada by 1784. We will discuss its impact on Indian country and the multiple Native American communities it struck\, and consider its significance for understanding the subsequent history of the United States. \n \n  \n \nColin Calloway grew up in England and received his Ph.D. from the University of Leeds. In the US\, he has worked at the Center for the History of the American Indian at the Newberry Library in Chicago\, and taught at the University of Wyoming and Dartmouth College. He has published more than a dozen books\, including One Vast Winter Count: The Native American West Before Lewis and Clark\, which won six best book awards\, and most recently The Indian World of George Washington\, which was a National Book Award finalist and won the George Washington Prize. DESCRIPTION:Join Los Luceros Historic Site virtually in celebrating the birthdays of two of our most popular lambs. This virtual presentation will give an overview of the lambs’ first year of life at the historic ranch and will conclude with allowing the lambs to devour their own birthday “cake”.  \n  \nTwo lambs were born during a snowstorm in January of 2020. These lambs were both rejected by their mothers and Los Luceros staff were happy to bottle feed them to help them survive. Staff and visitors quickly fell in love with the two energetic youngsters and they became a hit on social media. After the cold months were over\, the lambs were introduced to the larger flock of Churros and have convinced the other sheep to be more friendly with people. Ancient New World cultures from Mexico to South America combined these pungent pods with every conceivable meat and vegetable\, as evident from archaeological finds\, Indian artifacts\, botanical observations\, and studies of the cooking methods of the modern descendants of the Incas\, Mayas\, and Aztecs. In Chile Peppers: A Global History\, Dave DeWitt\, a world expert on chiles\, will travel from New Mexico across the Americas\, Europe\, Africa\, and Asia chronicling the history\, mystery\, and mythology of chiles around the world and their abundant uses in seventy mouth-tingling recipes. \nDave DeWitt is a food historian and one of the foremost authorities in the world for chile peppers\, spices\, and spicy foods. He has 55 published books to his credit winning the IACP Award for Best Culinary History along the way.  Dave is also the founding producer of the National Fiery Foods & Barbecue Show\, the trade/consumer show for the Fiery Foods and barbecue industries\, now in its thirty-third year. DESCRIPTION:New Mexico’s musical and dramatic traditions that are celebrated during the holiday season developed over hundreds of years beginning with traditions in medieval Spain that were then brought to the colonies. Here in New Mexico each has developed with local and regional influences. The Matachines dances are performed by the Hispano\, Pueblo and Genízaro people of New Mexico. Throughout the state the Matachines dances and ceremonies are enjoyed on December 12\, Feast Day of Our Immaculate Conception and Our Lady of Guadalupe and are also performed in many locations on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day. Las Posadas (The Inns) and Los Pastores (The Shepherds) are performed during the advent period leading up the Christmas Eve and Christmas day. Two traditions ringing in the New Year are the Los Comanches dances in Ranchos de Taos and the celebration of Día de los Manueles (The Day of Immanuel)\, or Dar los Días (The Giving of Days) in which houses are serenaded with music and dance to welcome the New Year\, the latter are accompanied by the symbolic killing of the old year. \n  \n  \n
