DESCRIPTION:St. Francis Auditorium \n$15 general\, $10 NM residents\, $7.50 MNMF \nNew Mexico Museum of Art \nCelebrated organist Maxine Thévenot will perform a concert on the recently-restored Frederick R. Haas Pipe Organ in the St. Francis Auditorium. The concert will include traditional holiday music as well as a selection of organ compositions by Johann Sebastian Bach\, Johannes Brahms\, and other notable composers. \nCanon Dr. Thévenot is Director of Cathedral Music and Organist at the Cathedral of St. John; Founding and Artistic Director of New Mexico’s professional vocal ensemble-Polyphony: Voices of New Mexico; and is adjunct faculty at UNM as pipe organ instructor and chapel organist at the Alumni Chapel. \nThe concert will also mark the return of the pipe organ\, which has not been played publicly since 2014 and was refurbished earlier this year\, thanks to a generous donation from the Philadelphia-based Wyncote Foundation and foundation trustee Frederick R. Haas. \nTickets for the concert are $15 for general admission\, $10 for New Mexican residents\, and $7.50 for members of the New Mexico Museum Foundation. \nPurchase Tickets Here

SUMMARY:Native Pottery Demonstration Series Rose Pacheco (Santo Domingo) and Billy Veale
DESCRIPTION:Although her works are considered contemporary\, Rose describes herself as a traditional potter. Her clay is made from materials she sources from the hills of Kewa Pueblo (Santo Domingo Pueblo) and her homemade paints are created from plants such as prickly pear and prunes. \nRose hand coils her bowls to shape them and then decorates them with centuries old design motifs that remain popular today. The homemade paints are applied to the unfired bowls using a brush made from the yucca plant. Then the bowls are fired in a pit outdoors using cottonwood bark fueled fires in traditional Pueblo manner. SUMMARY:Friends of History Wednesday Lecture Series The Valles Caldera\, Then\, Now\, and to Come
DESCRIPTION:This talk is drawn from the new\, revised and expanded edition of Valles Caldera\, A New Vision for New Mexico’s National Preserve\, by William deBuys and Don J. Usner\, Museum of New Mexico Press\, 2021. \nUsner and deBuys will present a photo-talk on the Valles Caldera National Preserve highlighting the main events\, political and ecological issues\, of the first twenty years of the preserve and its prospect for the next twenty. Usner will show some of the photographs he captured for the revised and expanded edition of the book\, which first appeared in 2006\, including a selection documenting the effects of the Las Conchas and Thompson Ridge fires. \nWilliam deBuys chaired the Valles Caldera Trust from 2001 to 2005 in its early efforts to manage the 89\,000-acre Valles Caldera National Preserve in north-central New Mexico.  He is the author of ten books\, including A Great Aridness: Climate Change and the Future of the American Southwest (2011) and River of Traps (a 1991 Pulitzer finalist). His most recent book\, The Trail to Kanjiroba: Rediscovering Earth in an Age of Loss\, appeared in August 2021. Bill lives on a farm he has tended since 1976 in northern New Mexico. \nDon J. Usner was born and raised in Los Alamos and Chimayó\, New Mexico. He is an award winning writer and photographer and former official photographer for the Valles Caldera Trust. His books include Orale! Lowrider: Custom Made in New Mexico; Benigna’s Chimayó: Cuentos from the Old Plaza; Sabino’s Map: Life in Chimayó’s Old Plaza and Chasing Dichos Through Chimayó. SUMMARY:CLEARLYL INDIGENOUS Conversations on Glass Art—Larry “Ulaaq” Ahvakana (Inupiaq) and Tony Jojola (Isleta Pueblo)
DESCRIPTION:Breaking the boundaries of what is deemed traditional Indigenous art\, Museum of Indian Arts & Culture’s new exhibition\, Clearly Indigenous\, examines how Native artists reinterpret cultural narratives and designs in new mediums. The two-pronged exhibition focuses on how Native artists have melded ancestral ways with new methods and materials in glass\, while concurrently examining the historical narrative of how glass art came to Indian Country from a historical perspective. In this month’s program\, Larry “Ulaaq” Ahvakana (Inupiaq) and Tony Jojola (Isleta Pueblo) are in conversation with MIAC assistant curator Lillia McEnaney. Larry “Ulaaq” Ahvakana (Inupiaq) is a sculptor of traditional Inupiaq art forms; his work ranges from figures depicting dancing\, whaling\, and other activities to animals\, deities\, masks\, and jewelry. Although much of his art is traditional in nature\, he has explored many forms\, and he works in variety of media\, including stone\, wood\, ivory\, bronze\, as well as glass. Tony Jojola (Isleta Pueblo) finds inspiration for his art in the Pueblo pottery with which he grew up with\, and his glass art is often based on the bowls and jars of traditional Pueblo ceramics. DESCRIPTION:“For this event\, Diné photographer and curator Rapheal Begay and Bard Graduate Center/American Museum of Natural History Postdoctoral Fellow Hadley Jensen will discuss their work on land-based and relational practices of Navajo weaving.” \nJensen curated the upcoming BGC/AMNH digital exhibition\, Shaped by the Loom\, launching online in Spring 2022\, and opening at the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture in Summer 2023. With support from the NYU Gallatin WetLab\, Begay and Jensen (co-curators of MIAC’s forthcoming exhibit) worked on a collaborative field documentation project that examines relationships between people and place. Through 360-degree panoramic images\, still photographs\, and audio recordings\, they aim to provide an immersive and sensory experience of the animate landscapes and geographic dynamics of the Navajo Nation. This content will be featured alongside MIAC’s 2023 exhibit of Navajo textiles in an effort to reimagine and rechart Diné space\, particularly within the context of institutional histories and collecting practices. SUMMARY:Engaging the Future: Conversations with Goodman Fellowship Artists Conversations with Valerie Jade Calabaza (Santo Domingo Pueblo)
DESCRIPTION:Valerie Calabaza is a jeweler embedded within her family’s longstanding artistic tradition and legacy. Her late grandparents\, Joseph F. and Mary Ann Calabaza\, learned to create each piece from their great-grandfather\, Patricio Calabaza. He taught them how to take a simple piece of turquoise\, mold it\, and create a beautiful necklace. As her family began to grow\, their five children\, Joseph R.\, Joseph A.\, Aldon\, DeAlva\, and Irvin Calabaza\, participated within the process for Joe and Mary’s creations. Her family makes their necklaces with heavier texture from turquoise\, lapis\, coral\, spiny oyster\, and other various stones. As years passed\, Joseph F. and Mary Ann taught Valerie Calabaza the traditional inlay on spiny oyster shells. Today\, Valerie continues to be inspired by the thunderbird necklaces made during the Great Depression at Santo Domingo Pueblo. “This type of artwork has been passed down for many generations\, and we continue to pass it down to our children and grandchildren. It is important to us that we keep our artwork alive because not only does it bring us joy\, but it is a representation of our traditional values.” Conversations with Goodman Fellows will continue on a monthly basis throughout the year\, generally the fourth Wednesday of every month\, at 10:00 am. DESCRIPTION:“Birds are essential in keeping down insect populations\, pollinating plants\, and dispersing and recycling nutrients back into the earth\, but beyond their practical contributions\, birds are also inspirational creatures that encourage and feed our spirits\,” said Diana Sherman\, collections manager\, and exhibit curator. “This exhibit celebrates the greatness of birds in our world and their important role in Native American culture. Representations of birds are abundant on pottery and in rock art\, speaking to the important role they played in the past and today.”  \nThe exhibition looks at the roles our flying companions play by exploring the use of birds in daily life and their representation on pottery and in rock art. Whether through paintings on vessels or vessels shaped in the form of birds\, there is no doubt that these creatures have been admired for ages. Giving lifesaving feathers\, sometimes serving as a food source\, and serving in the spiritual realm\, birds have played a crucial role in the celebration and preservation of life.

DESCRIPTION:Adrian Standing Elk Pinnecoose is a freelance industrial designer and digital artist. He has exhibited at the Santa Fe Indian Market\, the Heard Indian Fair and Market\, the Native Treasures Indian Arts Festival\, the American Indian Arts Marketplace at the Autry. Adrain also currently works and collaborates with several different silversmiths in the community. “As a contemporary artist\, I am known for producing innovative pieces that explore and push forward the limits of computer-generated design. My culture\, my identity\, my values are intertwined into the fabrication of my art to begin the conversation of opening doors for the next generation of Indigenous artists. I am simultaneously looking back to the past and forward to the future in order to highlight the qualitative aspect of my heritage and weave those meanings into my designs. Though static\, my pieces become fluid\, able to transcend the bounds of time and place. Meredith taught early Native American art history at the Institute of American Indian Arts\, Cherokee art history at the Cherokee Humanities class\, and art history at Santa Fe Community College. She earned her MFA degree from the San Francisco Art Institute and her BFA from the University of Oklahoma. SUMMARY:Friends of History Wednesday Lecture Series Palace Seen and Unseen: A Convergence of History and Archaeology
DESCRIPTION:The talk will provide an overview of the Palace Seen and Unseen exhibit\, which integrates documentary records with the material evidence uncovered by more than 100 years of archaeology at the Palace. Through this approach Co-curators\, Stephen Post\, Cordelia T. Snow\, and Alicia Romero guide the visitor through the many changes that occurred to the Palace and its grounds. Historical information is gleaned from governors\, priests\, prisoners\, soldiers\, and traders through documents\, memoirs\, maps\, and photographs. Archaeological insights come from excavations within and outside the Palace where stone foundations and buried facilities reflect 350 years of architectural change and the recovery of more than 1\,000\,000 artifacts connect us to its diverse peoples. \nStephen Post is the former Deputy Director of the New Mexico Office of Archaeological Studies. His 45-year archaeological career spent mostly in New Mexico afforded him the opportunity to study 12\,000 years of New Mexico’s past. He directed excavations for the New Mexico History Museum’s Domenici Building and Santa Fe Community Convention Center from 2002-2008. Findings at these locations include evidence of Santa Fe’s earliest farmers\, remnants of one of the villages of Ogapogeh\, foundations and facilities of 18th and 19th century residential and military compounds\, and foundations and basements from one of Santa Fe’s 20th century schools. DESCRIPTION:Breaking the boundaries of what is deemed traditional Indigenous art\, Museum of Indian Arts & Culture’s new exhibition\, Clearly Indigenous\, examines how Native artists reinterpret cultural narratives and designs in new mediums. The two-pronged exhibition focuses on how Native artists have melded ancestral ways with new methods and materials in glass\, while concurrently examining the historical narrative of how glass art came to Indian Country. In this month’s program\, exhibition designer Caroline Lajoie will discuss the exhibition’s design\, walking attendees through her inspiration and process. The presentation will be followed by a Q&A session moderated by Lillia McEnaney.

DESCRIPTION:Los Luceros Historic Site will extend its hours from sunrise to sunset on the first Sunday of each month. During this time\, entrance into Los Luceros will be free for New Mexico residents and includes access to the site’s visitor center\, historic buildings\, trails\, and picnic areas. The early morning and late evening are ideal for bird watching at Los Luceros\, which boasts a large diversity of species including bald eagles\, hummingbirds\, migratory waterfowl\, as well as one of the largest concentrations of flicker woodpeckers in New Mexico. Also\, the edge of the Rio Grande on the property at sunset is an ideal location to view bats beginning their nightly feast.
