SUMMARY:Let’s Take a Look
DESCRIPTION:On January 12th\, MIAC staff are returning to the museum’s virtual lobby to look at your treasures. Bring a weaving\, ceramic pot\, piece of jewelry (or something else!) to our Zoom meeting\, and curator of ethnology Tony Chavarria (Santa Clara Pueblo)\, curator of archaeological research collections Julia Clifton\, other staff members will attempt to identify and explain the item. Curators are experts in items from the Southwest\, but are willing to take a look at anything that is “brought in.” Previous attendees have often found that the experience of chatting with a group of curators is often just as\, or perhaps even more\, informative and enjoyable than the identification of the object. Please note that federal and state policies prohibit curators from appraising an item; the museum neither appraises or authenticates works of art.

SUMMARY:Family Mornings at Folk Art
DESCRIPTION:About the Museum of International Folk Art: http://www.internationalfolkart.org/ \nFounded in 1953 by Florence Dibell Bartlett\, the Museum of International Folk Art’s mission is to foster understanding of the traditional arts to illuminate human creativity and shape a humane world. The museum holds the world’s largest international folk art collection of more than 150\,000 objects from six continents and over 150 nations\, representing a broad range of global artists whose artistic expressions make Santa Fe an international crossroads of culture. For many visitors\, fascination with folk art begins upon seeing the whimsical toys and traditional objects within the Girard Collection. For others\, the international textiles\, ceramics\, carvings and other cultural treasures in the Neutrogena Collection provide the allure.  The museum’s historic and contemporary Latino and Hispano folk art collections\, spanning the Spanish Colonial period to modern-day New Mexico\, reflect how artists respond to their time and place in ways both delightful and sobering. In 2010\, the museum opened the Mark Naylor and Dale Gunn Gallery of Conscience\, where exhibitions encourage visitors to exchange ideas on complex issues of human rights and social justice. \n 706 Camino Lejo\, on Museum Hill in Santa Fe\, NM 87505. SUMMARY:Friends of History Wednesday Lecture Series The Civil War in the Far West
DESCRIPTION:Most Americans believe that the Civil War took place only in the East—Gettysburg\, Atlanta\, Appomattox—and that the fight involved only the North and the South. Beginning in the summer of 1861\, however\, the U.S. and Confederate armies clashed with each other and with Indigenous peoples in New Mexico and Arizona\, fighting for control over the larger West. Drawing from her Pulitzer Prize-finalist book\, The Three-Cornered War\, Megan Kate Nelson will explain what was at stake for all three groups in the Civil War in the West; how the conflict evolved between 1861 and 1868; and the print\, material\, and visual sources she consulted to uncover the lived experiences of the war’s combatants and civilians in this region. \nMegan Kate Nelson is a historian and writer\, with a BA from Harvard and a PhD in American Studies from the University of Iowa. Her most recent book\, The Three-Cornered War: The Union\, the Confederacy\, and Native Peoples in the Fight for the West (Scribner 2020) was a finalist for the 2021 Pulitzer Prize in History. She writes about the Civil War\, the U.S. West\, and American landscapes of memory for The New York Times\, Washington Post\, The Atlantic\, Smithsonian Magazine\, Preservation Magazine\, and Civil War Times. Scribner will publish her next book\, Saving Yellowstone: Exploration and Preservation in Reconstruction America\, in March 2022. \nYouTube Link:  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vccubCLPt0k

SUMMARY:CLEARLY INDIGENOUS - Jody Naranjo (Santa Clara Pueblo) + Harlan Reano (Santo Domingo Pueblo) Conversation in Glass Art with MIAC assistant curator Lillia McEnaney
DESCRIPTION:Breaking the boundaries of what is deemed traditional Indigenous art\, Museum of Indian Arts & Culture’s new exhibition\, Clearly Indigenous\, examines how Native artists reinterpret cultural narratives and designs in new mediums. The two-pronged exhibition focuses on how Native artists have melded ancestral ways with new methods and materials in glass\, while concurrently examining the historical narrative of how glass art came to Indian Country from a historical perspective. \nIn this month’s program\, Jody Naranjo (Santa Clara Pueblo) and Harlan Reano (Santo Domingo Pueblo) are in conversation with MIAC assistant curator Lillia McEnaney. Jody Naranjo (Santa Clara Pueblo) is a leading Pueblo potter known for her distinctive designs. Her explorations into glass art appear to have grown from her embrace of more contemporary forms in her work with clay. She was encouraged to work with glass by Preston Singletary and Leroy Garcia\, which lead to her collaborat. \nSanto Domingo Pueblo artist Harlan Reano has collaborated with Preston Singletary to create Cochiti-style figures and ollas in blown and carved glass. In their first project together\, in 2015\, Reano designed a series of standing human figures modeled on the Cochiti tradition of clay figures dating to the 1800s. Singletary created the figures in blown glass\, and Reano then carved them. \n**This event is virtual” \nHere is the Zoom registration link & here is the Facebook page \n

SUMMARY:Exhibition Closing Discussion—Collecting Jewelry: Conversations with the Artists Cody Sanderson (Navajo)\, Connie Tsosie Gaussoin ( Picuris Pueblo/Navajo) and Liz Wallace (Maidu/Washoe/Navajo)
DESCRIPTION:Collecting Jewelry showcases 160 pieces of jewelry made between 1880-1930 that Dr. Mera gathered. These pieces were made with rudimentary tools and without available references for style and technique\, formed the basis of Navajo/Diné silversmithing\, and inspired the generations that followed. \n Cody Sanderson (Navajo) is known for his imaginative\, often playful style. He began making jewelry in 1999\, learning his craft by experimenting\, asking questions of other jewelers\, and taking classes to learn new techniques such as tufa casting. Utilizing the fast-disappearing technique of hand-forging and integrating them with CAD and 3D printing\, Cody is combining traditional methods with modern technology and bringing his designs to the 21st century. \nConnie Tsosie Gaussoin (Picuris Pueblo/Navajo) has won many awards over the years for the quality of her work. Her family and clan traditions provide a basis for the design and development of her jewelry. The traditional and contemporary jewelry Connie creates represents her interpretations of her diverse background.   Liz Wallace (Maidu/Washoe/Navajo) began making jewelry as a child\, learning from her mother. Her father taught her how to work with turquoise\, and her silver and turquoise jewelry boosted her career into high gear. Over the years her repertoire has grown as Liz continues to experiment with new ideas and forms. Her repertoire now includes not only silver and turquoise\, but also includes Plique a Jour\, an art nouveau technique that had always fascinated her. \nRegister (use QR code): https://nmculture-org.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_Yn_PU3hrR3ynJWGQdkqLMA \nImage: Courtsey of Kitty Leaken \n

SUMMARY:Dawn ’til Dusk Day
DESCRIPTION:Los Luceros Historic Site will extend its hours from sunrise to sunset on the first Sunday of each month. During this time\, entrance into Los Luceros will be FREE for New Mexico residents and includes access to the site’s visitor center\, historic buildings\, trails\, and picnic areas. \n \nThe early morning and late evening are ideal for bird watching at Los Luceros\, which boasts a large diversity of species including bald eagles\, hummingbirds\, migratory waterfowl\, as well as one of the largest concentrations of flicker woodpeckers in New Mexico. Also\, the edge of the Rio Grande on the property at sunset is an ideal location to view bats beginning their nightly feast. \nLos Luceros is fun for the whole family. Educational children’s activities and crafts will be available and change each month\, so there is always a new topic to learn about! Picnics are common and encouraged as families can bring a blanket to eat under the Cottonwood trees or enjoy one of our many benches in scenic locations throughout the site- including down by the river. We encourage kids to bring their bicycles and see the site in a fun new way. Please ask the front desk about special educational programs.* \nThe Dawn ‘til Dusk Days also offers artists a great opportunity to enjoy golden hour and extended times for painting\, sketching\, and landscape photography. SUMMARY:Holiday Open House
DESCRIPTION:FREE  \nMuseum admission will be free all day! \nAfter last year’s hiatus\, we are excited to bring back the Museum’s Annual Holiday Open House! Though we are making changes to allow for COVID-safe practices\, there will still be activities\, music\, Baumann puppet entertainment\, and\, of course\, art! \nJoin us on December 19 from Noon-5:00 pm to enjoy a day of carolers\, food\, and a special appearance from Santa! The afternoon will also feature recorded performances of the Gustave Baumann marionettes from Christmas past and a chance to visit the Museum Library to view our collection of historic Christmas cards designed and printed by Baumann (aka Papa Gus!) \nGustave Baumann\, a Santa Fe Legend\, was an artist of many trades. His work included printmaking\, painting\, and marionette-making. Baumann hand-carved and decorated wooden puppets called marionettes and brought them to life in live performances. Some characters were tall and skinny\, others were short and stout\, some were animals\, and some were humans\, but all had a personality and story of their own. He created a traveling marionette theater complete with scripts\, costumes\, props\, backdrops\, scenery\, and a stage. Over a twenty-year period\, he created nearly 100 marionettes; however\, he was not a puppeteer. He left the actual performances to his wife Jane and Teatro Duende. In 1932 the Baumann Marionette Christmas Show at the NMMOA became a cherished community tradition.  \n \n\n \nSelfies with Gustave Baumann’s Santa marionette will be available in the lobby at 1:30 p.m. and 3 p.m. Parents\, have your camera ready for this photo opportunity. Get your picture taken with Santa on your lap! It’s a photo opportunity for children of all ages\, led by actor Danielle Reddick.  \n \nA recording of the 2019 performance of A Really Big Party for Papa Gus will run continuously in museum lobby. Teatro Duende presents a little skit by Gustave Baumann’s marionettes. Juan\, Rosina and Miguelito try very hard to get ready for a party\, but rascally Warts keeps causing trouble! Puppeteers: Danielle Reddick\, Patrick Briggs\, Melissa Heiman\, Liam Benjamin Merkle\, Camille Cooper and Susie Perkins. Directed by Barbara Hatch.  \n \nA selection of handmade holiday cards by Santa Fe artists are on view in the museum’s archive and library. Drawn from the museum’s rich collection of ephemera\, these holiday cards are rarely available for viewing\, so don’t miss your chance to view these unique holiday greetings! \n \nPackets with self-guided activities will be available for pick up in the lobby. These activities promise an adventure through the museum and may contain some holiday sweets\, too! \n\n  \nWhile you’re on the plaza be sure to check out more Holiday Open House offerings across the street at the History Museum and Library! Visit their event page for more information. Admission to both museums will be free all day!

SUMMARY:ENGAGING THE FUTURE: Conversations with Goodman Fellowship Artist David Naranjo (Santa Clara\, San Juan and Cochiti)
DESCRIPTION:His work has been shown at the Museum of Contemporary Native Arts\, Singular Couture Gallery\, FarahNheight Gallery\, and has been featured in the Surface Design Journal and on the cover of Local Flavor Magazine 2018 August issue. Symbols and iconography depicted on pottery and embroidery are not only for ornate decorative purposes\, but carry great symbolic significance and serve as visual representations of the landscape\, natural world\, and\, if used properly\, for prayer. When wearing a silk jacket or tank top\, you become the vessel\, carrying and embodying those traditional teachings and value systems with you. There is truth to our way of life and knowledge deeply rooted and embedded within Puebloan art forms.

SUMMARY:Let’s Take a Look - December 2021
DESCRIPTION:On December 15\, 2021\, MIAC staff are returning to the museum’s virtual lobby to look at your treasures for Let’s Take a Look. Bring a weaving\, ceramic\, piece of jewelry (or something else!) to our Zoom meeting\, and curator of ethnology Tony Chavarria (Santa Clara Pueblo)\, curator of archaeological research collections Julia Clifton\, and other staff members will attempt to identify and explain the item. \nCurators are experts in items from the Southwest\, but are willing to take a look at anything that is “brought in.” Previous attendees have often found that the experience of chatting with a group of curators is often just as—or perhaps even more—informative and enjoyable than the identification of the object itself. \nPlease note that federal and state policies prohibit curators from appraising an item; the museum neither appraises or authenticates works of art. \nRegister: https://nmculture-org.zoom.us/…/tZYkdO…

SUMMARY:Dressing with Purpose: Belonging and Resistance in Scandinavia
DESCRIPTION:By the 20th century\, many in Sweden worried about the ravages of industrialization\, urbanization\, and emigration on traditional ways of life. Norway was gripped in a struggle for national independence. Indigenous Sámi communities—artificially divided by national borders and long resisting colonial control—rose up in protests that demanded political recognition and sparked cultural renewal. Within this context of European nation-building\, colonial expansion\, and Indigenous activism\, traditional dress took on special meaning as folk\, national\, or ethnic minority costumes—complex categories that deserve reexamination today. In this exhibition\, visitors will be introduced to individuals who adapt and revitalize dress traditions to articulate who they are\, proclaim personal values and group allegiances\, strive for sartorial excellence\, reflect critically on the past\, and ultimately\, reshape the societies they live in. \nLearn more about the companion publication for Dressing with Purpose published by Indiana University Press: https://iupress.org/9780253058577/dressing-with-purpose/ \n \nThis project is supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts. Additional support comes from Barbro Osher Pro Suecia Foundation and Swedish Council of America. \nPhoto\, from left to right: Eva Aira and Inga Lajla Aira Balto in gávttit from Jåhkåmåhkke and Kárášjohka; Sven Roos in Gagnefsdräkt and Lars-Erik Backman in Leksandsdräkt; Fatima Aakhus and Randi Myrum in Setesdalsbunader. SUMMARY:Bunad in a Multicultural Norway
DESCRIPTION:This program is in conjunction with the exhibit Dressing with Purpose: Belonging and Resistance in Scandinavia \nDress helps us fashion identity\, history\, community\, and place. Dress has been harnessed as a metaphor for both progress and stability\, the exotic and the utopian\, oppression and freedom\, belonging and resistance. Dressing with Purpose examines three Scandinavian dress traditions—Swedish folkdräkt\, Norwegian bunad\, and Sámi gákti—and traces their development during two centuries of social and political change across northern Europe. \nPhoto credit: Camilla Rossing in Beltestakk for East Telemark. SUMMARY:Native Pottery Demonstration Series Rose Pacheco (Santo Domingo) and Billy Veale
DESCRIPTION:Although her works are considered contemporary\, Rose describes herself as a traditional potter. Her clay is made from materials she sources from the hills of Kewa Pueblo (Santo Domingo Pueblo) and her homemade paints are created from plants such as prickly pear and prunes. \nRose hand coils her bowls to shape them and then decorates them with centuries old design motifs that remain popular today. The homemade paints are applied to the unfired bowls using a brush made from the yucca plant. Then the bowls are fired in a pit outdoors using cottonwood bark fueled fires in traditional Pueblo manner. Finally\, Rose finishes each bowl with an egg white coating giving the final work a soft luster.”* \n**This event is virtual** \nHere is the Zoom registration link\, here is the Facebook page\, and attached here is the flyer for the Dec 8th pottery demo.
