SUMMARY:Dawn ’til Dusk Day
DESCRIPTION:Los Luceros Historic Site will extend its hours from sunrise to sunset on the first Sunday of each month. During this time\, entrance into Los Luceros will be FREE for New Mexico residents and includes access to the site’s visitor center\, historic buildings\, trails\, and picnic areas. \n \nThe early morning and late evening are ideal for bird watching at Los Luceros\, which boasts a large diversity of species including bald eagles\, hummingbirds\, migratory waterfowl\, as well as one of the largest concentrations of flicker woodpeckers in New Mexico. Also\, the edge of the Rio Grande on the property at sunset is an ideal location to view bats beginning their nightly feast. \nLos Luceros is fun for the whole family. Educational children’s activities and crafts will be available and change each month\, so there is always a new topic to learn about! Picnics are common and encouraged as families can bring a blanket to eat under the Cottonwood trees or enjoy one of our many benches in scenic locations throughout the site- including down by the river. We encourage kids to bring their bicycles and see the site in a fun new way. Please ask the front desk about special educational programs.* \nThe Dawn ‘til Dusk Days also offers artists a great opportunity to enjoy golden hour and extended times for painting\, sketching\, and landscape photography. SUMMARY:Friends of History Lecture Series (Online) The Wisdom Archive: Preserving and Celebrating the Traditions of New Mexico
DESCRIPTION:Please join Scott Andrews\, Founder of The Wisdom Archive as he shares his video portrait of the work of Northern New Mexican Elders\, as part of our Friends of History Lecture Series. \nSince 2014\, The Wisdom Archive has been producing video portraits of masters of traditional culture for a YouTube archive. Primarily focusing on the work of Northern New Mexican elders\, the Archive now includes 51 short films. Ranging from the traditional music of Antonia Apodaca and Cipriano Vigil\, to “year in the life” depictions of long-time sheepherders and farmers\, portraits of traditional artists at work\, and ancient recipes brought to life\, the Archive’s intent is to celebrate and preserve disappearing traditional culture.  \nScott Andrews first came to Santa Fe in 1978 as a student at The Anthropology Film Center on Upper Canyon Road. It was the second year of a master’s degree in Visual Anthropology and launched him on a career producing cross-cultural documentaries for public television around the world. After gaining a PhD in Education at Stanford\, he went on to win an Emmy for his work in Afghanistan\, (Last Images of War) and a Dupont Silver Baton for a three-part Frontline series about integration at Berkeley (CA) High (School Colors). DESCRIPTION:Los Luceros Historic Site will extend its hours from sunrise to sunset on the first Sunday of each month. During this time\, entrance into Los Luceros will be FREE for New Mexico residents and includes access to the site’s visitor center\, historic buildings\, trails\, and picnic areas. \n \nThe early morning and late evening are ideal for bird watching at Los Luceros\, which boasts a large diversity of species including bald eagles\, hummingbirds\, migratory waterfowl\, as well as one of the largest concentrations of flicker woodpeckers in New Mexico. Also\, the edge of the Rio Grande on the property at sunset is an ideal location to view bats beginning their nightly feast. \nLos Luceros is fun for the whole family. Educational children’s activities and crafts will be available and change each month\, so there is always a new topic to learn about! Picnics are common and encouraged as families can bring a blanket to eat under the Cottonwood trees or enjoy one of our many benches in scenic locations throughout the site- including down by the river. We encourage kids to bring their bicycles and see the site in a fun new way. SUMMARY:Painted Reflections Isomeric Design in Ancestral Pueblo Pottery
DESCRIPTION:Painted Reflections emphasizes the sophisticated aesthetic qualities of Pueblo art through the study of reversible optical illusions and ambiguous figure-ground relationships. \nBeginning around 900 AD\, Ancestral Pueblo artists began producing new designs on their ceramics—they painted pairs of motifs called isomers\, or equal forms. From a conventional perspective\, these works appear as painted motifs on unpainted backgrounds. But simultaneously\, they also appear as unpainted images on painted backdrops. The exhibition contextualizes isomeric design within larger artistic trends and trajectories\, bridging the gaps between art history\, anthropology\, and archaeology\, and includes examples of isomeric designs made by both ancestral and contemporary artists.  \nPainted Reflections is co-curated by Joseph Traugott\, Ph.D.\, retired curator at the New Mexico Museum of Art\, Antonio R. Chavarria (Santa Clara Pueblo)\, Curator of Ethnology at MIAC\, and Scott G. Ortman\, PhD\, Associate Professor of Anthropology at the University of Colorado—Boulder.  \nThe exhibition is based in-part on Painted Reflections: Isomeric design in Ancestral Pueblo Pottery\, a book written by the co-curators and published by the Museum of New Mexico Press in 2018. \n“The opening of Painted Reflections marks an important moment for MIAC. By presenting ancestral Pueblo pottery to the public in a fresh and nuanced way\, Dr. Traugott and his team is encouraging visitors to rethink what they think they know about Pueblo art\,” said Dr. Matthew Martinez\, Ph.D.\, MIAC’s interim executive director.

SUMMARY:Riding Herd with Billy the Kid The Rise of the Cattle Industry in New Mexico
DESCRIPTION:“Riding Herd with Billy the Kid: The Rise of the Cattle Industry in New Mexico” begins with the 1866 cattle drive along what would become the Goodnight-Loving Trail in eastern New Mexico and ends with the Lincoln County War in the late 1870s and its aftermath. \nWhile there are many facets to this story\, it is summed up in the exhibit’s introduction: Cattle made men money\, money made men powerful\, and power led men to use violence. Billy the Kid’s brief but violent career as a cowboy and hired gun occurred during the Lincoln County War\, a bitter feud over control of the state’s cattle industry. \n“Early on\, we saw this exhibit as a way to tell the very important story of the cattle industry in New Mexico\,” said the Museum’s History Curator\, Leah Tookey. “Because Billy the Kid and the Lincoln County War are two of the most interesting parts of New Mexico history\, and both are connected to the cattle industry\, we decided to use those stories to tell the bigger cattle industry story.” \nThroughout the exhibit are snippets about Billy the Kid and his connection to the overall story. “Our plan is to let Billy the Kid guide the visitor through this very important period of New Mexico history\,” said Tookey. \nThe open range period is part of the exhibit\, and other sections cover government beef contracts\, the military’s role\, prominent ranches\, and rustlers. \nThe exhibit features many objects\, large and small. The large is a chuck wagon. The small include artifacts excavated from the site of the 1878 McSween fire in Lincoln. In between are objects such as a rifle scabbard that belonged to John W. Poe\, a lawman who was with Sheriff Pat Garrett on the night Billy the Kid was killed; 13 weapons from the time period; Garrett’s branding iron; John Tunstall’s portable writing desk; and running irons used by cattle rustlers to alter brands. Various tools of the trade for a New Mexico cowboy also are part of the exhibit. \nLas Cruces artist Bob Diven created a life-sized sculpture of Billy the Kid for the exhibit\, and there are many historic photographs and maps. \nWhile the Kid rides front and center as the headliner in this story\, many other colorful characters also are featured\, including cattle kings\, a cattle queen\, merchants\, and cowboys who doubled as enforcers\, or “regulators.”

DESCRIPTION:Please join Hannah Abelbeck\, Photo Archivist\, with the New Mexico History Museum\, for an online talk featuring Sam Adams\, an African American Civil War veteran who later settled in New Mexico\, as part of our Friends of History lecture series. \nThe presentation will put Adams in context with his contemporaries and explores the difficulty of looking for information about minor and overlooked historical figures whose stories usually aren’t center stage. \nHannah Abelbeck is the Photo Archivist in the Palace of the Governors Photo Archives department at the New Mexico History Museum. She has a BA in English and Art History from the University of Kansas and an MA in English from Penn State University\, and she’s worked with special collections archives at both universities. She researches Southwestern (especially New Mexican) photographers\, documentary and vernacular photography\, cultural movements\, and histories of gender and sexuality. SUMMARY:CLEARLY INDIGENOUS Conversations on Glass Art: Angela Babby (Lakota)
DESCRIPTION:Breaking the boundaries of what is deemed traditional Indigenous art\, Museum of Indian Arts & Culture’s new exhibition\, Clearly Indigenous\, examines how Native artists reinterpret cultural narratives and designs in new mediums. The two-pronged exhibition focuses on how Native artists have melded ancestral ways with new methods and materials in glass\, while concurrently examining the historical narrative of how glass art came to Indian Country from a historical perspective. \nFor this month’s program\, Angela Babby (Lakota) is in conversation with MIAC assistant curator Lillia McEnaney. \nAngela Babby (Lakota) is an award-winning artist who has revived and combined ancient techniques into a unique style of crated enameled-glass mosaics\, which are kiln-fired. Her “glass-on-glass” approach combines her love of painting with the luminosity and saturation of color that can be achieved when working with glass. SUMMARY:Ansel Adams: Pure Photography
DESCRIPTION:Ansel Adams is one of the first names that springs to mind when people think about photography. This exhibition of sixteen prints from the museum’s collection\, augmented with two promised gifts\, concentrates on the photographs that Adams made around 1932\, before he became a household name. \nIn the late 1920s\, Adams shifted away from the soft-edged style of pictorialism\, prominent in the early twentieth century\, toward hard-edged modernism. In 1932\, he and several of his San Francisco Bay Area compatriots formed Group f/64 and issued a manifesto declaring their dedication to “pure photography.” For Adams\, that meant a commitment to the precision of the camera; use of glossy\, high-contrast photo paper; and visualization of the final image before releasing the shutter. \nAnsel Adams: Pure Photography includes close-up nature studies\, portraits\, and views of architecture Adams made during this formative time. A small selection of later photographs\, including two of his most iconic prints\, Aspens\, New Mexico and Moonrise\, Hernandez\, New Mexico. SUMMARY:Let’s Take a Look
DESCRIPTION:On January 12th\, MIAC staff are returning to the museum’s virtual lobby to look at your treasures. Bring a weaving\, ceramic pot\, piece of jewelry (or something else!) to our Zoom meeting\, and curator of ethnology Tony Chavarria (Santa Clara Pueblo)\, curator of archaeological research collections Julia Clifton\, other staff members will attempt to identify and explain the item. Curators are experts in items from the Southwest\, but are willing to take a look at anything that is “brought in.” Previous attendees have often found that the experience of chatting with a group of curators is often just as\, or perhaps even more\, informative and enjoyable than the identification of the object. Please note that federal and state policies prohibit curators from appraising an item; the museum neither appraises or authenticates works of art.
