SUMMARY:Expressing Norwegian and American Identities through Dress
DESCRIPTION:Dress helps us fashion identity\, history\, community\, and place. Dress has been harnessed as a metaphor for both progress and stability\, the exotic and the utopian\, oppression and freedom\, belonging and resistance. Dressing with Purpose examines three Scandinavian dress traditions—Swedish folkdräkt\, Norwegian bunad\, and Sámi gákti—and traces their development during two centuries of social and political change across northern Europe. \nLearn more about the companion publication for Dressing with Purpose published by Indiana University Press: https://iupress.org/9780253058577/dressing-with-purpose/ \n Photo credits: Laurann Gilbertson

SUMMARY:Stories\, Memories\, and Legacies The Santa Fe Internment Camp and its Historical Marker
DESCRIPTION:Located on a hill at the Frank S. Ortiz Park in Santa Fe\, NM\, stands a stone Marker\, placed there April 20\, 2002\, commemorating the Santa Fe Internment Camp (SFIC). Established in March of 1942\, the camp interned over 4\,500 Japanese immigrant men\, making it one of America’s largest prison camps for resident aliens in the United States during WWII. Please join the New Mexico History Museum (NMHM) and the New Mexico Japanese American Citizens League as we inform and remind attendees of the historical existence of the U.S. Justice Department internment camp on the site of the present Casa Solana neighborhood\, and memorialize the experience of thousands of Japanese immigrants and American-born citizens unjustly incarcerated there between 1942 and 1946\, as well as celebrate the courage of the Santa Fe community in the resolution of the Marker controversy. \n“Generational Legacies: The Santa Fe Internment Camp\,” “Confinement in the Land of Enchantment\,” and artifacts from the New Mexico History Museum’s collection will be on display in room 15 of the Palace of the Governors to explore the history of this event. Please enter at the main entrance of the New Mexico History Museum.

SUMMARY:Friends of History Wednesday Lecture Series Miguel Trujillo: New Mexico’s Unknown Civil Rights Hero
DESCRIPTION:When New Mexico became a state in 1912\, its constitution denied Indians the right to vote.  In 1948\, Miguel Trujillo\, a WWII Marine veteran from Laguna\, sued New Mexico and obtained the right to vote for Indians of the state.  This presentation tells his story. It encourages an understanding of the background for denying Indians the right to vote in 1912 and encourages people to think beyond the Three Peoples myth—Indians\, Hispanics\, and Anglos living in harmony—to the reality of the struggle that began with the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 and continues today. \nGordon Bronitsky grew up in Albuquerque and is trained as an archeologist (BA UNM 1971; PhD University of Arizona 1977).  For the last 28 years\, he has been the founder/president of Bronitsky and Associates\, and IndigeNOW!\, his non-profit production arm. This program works with Indigenous artists and performers\, both traditional and contemporary\, to bring their voices and messages to the world. \nYou can learn more about his work at indigenow.com \nLecture Link: \nhttps://friendsofhistorynm.org/event/miguel-trujillo-new-mexicos-unknown-civil-rights-hero/ \nPhoto Credit: Miguel Trujillo and Daughter\, 1943. SUMMARY:For the next thousand years: A presentation on crafting another world.
DESCRIPTION:Laiti has been active in Saami civil society since she was 16 years old. In recent years she has been organizing community resistance against mining projects in her hometown of Kallak/Gállok\, advocating for climate justice in Sápmi\, working with local Saami communities to build and strengthen Saami self-determination\, and creating post-apocalyptic worlds-to-be. Laiti’s artivisim is guided by principles of anti-coloniality\, Indigenous futurism\, Saami traditional knowledge\, as well as her love for her people and the land. She incorporates techniques derived from duodji (Saami art\, craft\, and design)\, culture jamming\, community action\, and performance art. Her vision is to live as part of a free Indigenous people. Her passion is justice—not just for her community—but for all of creation. \nPhoto credits: Jenni Laiti by Carl-Johan Utsi

SUMMARY:Dawn ’til Dusk Day
DESCRIPTION:Los Luceros Historic Site will extend its hours from sunrise to sunset on the first Sunday of each month. During this time\, entrance into Los Luceros will be FREE for New Mexico residents and includes access to the site’s visitor center\, historic buildings\, trails\, and picnic areas. \n \nThe early morning and late evening are ideal for bird watching at Los Luceros\, which boasts a large diversity of species including bald eagles\, hummingbirds\, migratory waterfowl\, as well as one of the largest concentrations of flicker woodpeckers in New Mexico. Also\, the edge of the Rio Grande on the property at sunset is an ideal location to view bats beginning their nightly feast. \nLos Luceros is fun for the whole family. Educational children’s activities and crafts will be available and change each month\, so there is always a new topic to learn about! Picnics are common and encouraged as families can bring a blanket to eat under the Cottonwood trees or enjoy one of our many benches in scenic locations throughout the site- including down by the river. We encourage kids to bring their bicycles and see the site in a fun new way. Please ask the front desk about special educational programs.* \nThe Dawn ‘til Dusk Days also offers artists a great opportunity to enjoy golden hour and extended times for painting\, sketching\, and landscape photography. The lighting\, historic buildings\, and scenery are ideal for portrait photography to capture the special moments and events in your life. \nWe hope to see you at the next Dawn ‘til Dusk day! \n \n*Tours and programs are subject to the Department of Cultural Affairs’ covid-safe practices as well as state and federal public health orders. SUMMARY:Painted Reflections: A Virtual Symposium for New....
DESCRIPTION:Official program is forthcoming. The event will include a virtual tour with the exhibition curators\, a panel discussion surrounding the origin of isomeric design\, a second discussion about future implications for isomeric design\, as well as several opportunities for conversations with the curators and contemporary artists. Speakers will include: Dr. Joseph Traugott\, Dr. Scott Ortman\, Tony Chavarria (Santa Clara Pueblo)\, and Dr. Bruce Bernstein\, among others.\n \n \n \nPainted Reflections emphasizes the sophisticated aesthetic qualities of Pueblo art through the study of reversible optical illusions and ambiguous figure-ground relationships. Beginning around 900 AD\, Ancestral Pueblo artists began producing new designs on their ceramics—they painted pairs of motifs called isomers\, or equal forms. From a conventional perspective\, these works appear as painted motifs on unpainted backgrounds\, but simultaneously\, they also appear as unpainted images on painted backdrops. Importantly\, the exhibition contextualizes isomeric design within larger artistic trends and trajectories\, bridging the gaps between art history\, anthropology\, and archaeology\, and includes examples of isomeric designs made by both ancestral and contemporary artists. Painted Reflections demonstrates the ways in which contemporary Indigenous artists are using isomeric design in their work\, placing ancestral ceramics in conversation with the innovations of contemporary artists.\n \n \n \nPainted Reflections is co-curated by Joseph Traugott\, Ph.D.\, retired curator at the New Mexico Museum of Art\, Antonio R. Chavarria (Santa Clara Pueblo)\, curator of ethnology at MIAC\, and Scott G. Ortman\, Ph.D.\, associate professor of anthropology at the University of Colorado—Boulder.\n \n \n \nThis program is made possible with the support of the New Mexico Humanities Council.\n \nAny views\, findings\, conclusions or recommendations expressed in this program do not necessarily represent those of the National Endowment for the Humanities or the New Mexico Humanities Council.\n \n \n \nRegister: https://nmculture-org.zoom.us/…/WN_901tjlTlQKq-U5X4ChqwkA

SUMMARY:ENGAGING THE FUTURE: Conversations with Goodman Fellowship Artist Robert Whitehair Begay (Navajo)
DESCRIPTION:Artist Statement: “My name is Robert Whitehair Begay\, I am currently 18 years old.  I am from Gallup\, New Mexico\, and I recently graduated high school in 2021. I am a tufa cast artist who learned to make tufa cast jewelry mainly from my father\, Darryl Dean Begay. My mother\, Rebecca T. Begay\, is also a jeweler and an artist. I’ve always enjoyed drawing and I started  craving tufa at age 4 years old—even at that age\, it was fun and exciting to make art pieces and go to shows with my parents and my 2 older brothers. In 2009\, my parents won the Best of Show at the SWAIA Santa Fe Indian Market\, and that was also the year I entered for the first time. I was 6 years old and won a first place ribbon for a silver tufa cast seed pot\, and also won a third place ribbon for a painting. That is something I’ll always remember.” More recently\, in August 2019\, I won Best of Youth at both the Gallup Inter-Tribal Ceremonial Market for a bracelet called\, “Cheii’s Land\,” and also won an award at SWAIA Santa Fe Indian Market for a bolo tie called\, “Cheii Whitehair.” \nRegister in advance for this webinar:  After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar. \n  \nRegistration link: https://nmculture-org.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_P1RgqxA8TJWTdzhuJrAzfQ?fbclid=IwAR2uVMnM4qJizp5YLS1mnCiTywbDKD_kVxDbgo82hPJrBrPwghFPVblm10E

SUMMARY:MAKE & TAKE @ MOIFA
DESCRIPTION:About the Museum of International Folk Art: http://www.internationalfolkart.org \n706 Camino Lejo\, on Museum Hill in Santa Fe\, NM 87505. (505) 476-1200. \nFounded in 1953 by Florence Dibell Bartlett\, the Museum of International Folk Art’s mission is to foster understanding of the traditional arts to illuminate human creativity and shape a humane world. The museum holds the world’s largest international folk art collection of more than 150\,000 objects from six continents and over 150 nations\, representing a broad range of global artists whose artistic expressions make Santa Fe an international crossroads of culture. For many visitors\, fascination with folk art begins upon seeing the whimsical toys and traditional objects within the Girard Collection. For others\, the international textiles\, ceramics\, carvings and other cultural treasures in the Neutrogena Collection provide the allure.  The museum’s historic and contemporary Latino and Hispano folk art collections\, spanning the Spanish Colonial period to modern-day New Mexico\, reflect how artists respond to their time and place in ways both delightful and sobering. In 2010\, the museum opened the Mark Naylor and Dale Gunn Gallery of Conscience\, where exhibitions encourage visitors to exchange ideas on complex issues of human rights and social justice. \n

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening: Free Admission 5-7pm Curative Powers: New Mexico’s Hot Springs
DESCRIPTION:Curative Powers: New Mexico’s Hot Springs This exhibition explores well-known resorts as well as lesser-known hot springs. Ponce de Leon\, Montezuma\, and Faywood are a few among many areas whose history will be addressed. The nearly 90 photographs range from the late 19th century through the 1980s and document the evolution of how many of these springs were used and developed. Museum visitors will also see the stark change in how people dressed (or not) when they visited and enjoyed these hot springs. New Mexico attracted many people seeking respite from tuberculosis and other ailments\, and they typically frequented hot springs to aid in this relief. Exhibit opening is admission free. The exhibition runs March 18 – September 4\, 2022.

Romero\, Curator of the exhibition and NMHM’s Curator of Nuevomexicano/a History\, explains\, “Exploring the history of New Mexico’s vast hot springs provides us an opportunity to explore how land ownership\, capitalism\, and health tourism helped shape this natural phenomenon into a burgeoning business venture.”

SUMMARY:Student Art Exhibition | Exposición de Arte Estudiantil

SUMMARY:Native Pottery Demonstration Series Jared Tso (Diné)
DESCRIPTION:My connection to clay is one that is generational. Four to be precise. Four iterations of healing\, tradition\, and community that have created a path that I now stand on. And as I walk down this path I have noticed milestones manifested in material\, process\, technique\, methodology\, connection and creation. As I ponder these concepts\, I have taken the time to reflect. What kind of reactions would previous generations have toward the vessels I create? What critique would they give? — Jared Tso \n  \n**This event is virtual**  Please register at:  https://nmculture-org.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_7192bZ1vTvKlXo05wh1IOQ?fbclid=IwAR1kz1qwpEeAnrmRBWLsxll0k1VUVAvnf1vSHzpiFwEaiIx4B-UpW7DkmxI

SUMMARY:Friends of History Lecture Series (Online) The Wisdom Archive: Preserving and Celebrating the Traditions of New Mexico
DESCRIPTION:Please join Scott Andrews\, Founder of The Wisdom Archive as he shares his video portrait of the work of Northern New Mexican Elders\, as part of our Friends of History Lecture Series. \nSince 2014\, The Wisdom Archive has been producing video portraits of masters of traditional culture for a YouTube archive. Primarily focusing on the work of Northern New Mexican elders\, the Archive now includes 51 short films. Ranging from the traditional music of Antonia Apodaca and Cipriano Vigil\, to “year in the life” depictions of long-time sheepherders and farmers\, portraits of traditional artists at work\, and ancient recipes brought to life\, the Archive’s intent is to celebrate and preserve disappearing traditional culture.  \nScott Andrews first came to Santa Fe in 1978 as a student at The Anthropology Film Center on Upper Canyon Road. It was the second year of a master’s degree in Visual Anthropology and launched him on a career producing cross-cultural documentaries for public television around the world. After gaining a PhD in Education at Stanford\, he went on to win an Emmy for his work in Afghanistan\, (Last Images of War) and a Dupont Silver Baton for a three-part Frontline series about integration at Berkeley (CA) High (School Colors). He returned to live in Santa Fe in 2013 and began filming with local traditional masters for The Wisdom Archive. \nONLINE EVENT link here:  https://bit.ly/nmhm322 \nPhoto credit: Undated.
