SUMMARY:CLEARLY INDIGENOUS Conversations on Glass Art: Raven Skyriver (Tlingit) and Dan Friday (Lummi)
DESCRIPTION:The Museum of Indian Arts & Culture (MIAC) invites you to virtually join Raven Skyriver (Tlingit) and Dan Friday (Lummi) for the last iteration of our lecture series surrounding our current exhibition\, “Clearly Indigenous: Native Visions Reimagined in Glass.” \nRaven Skyriver has created a stunning body of works in glass\, of sleek lined fish and other animals that live in and around water. Growing up on Lopez Island in Washington\, in the Puget Sound\, Skyriver developed a reverence for the sea and its creatures. He has devoted his artistic endeavors to the creation in blown glass of realistic\, yet surreal\, sea creatures such as salmon\, sea lions\, whales\, and otters. \nDan Friday has become a leading glass artist over the past decade. While he has honed his technical expertise in working with glass\, he has also developed an approach to the content or meaning of his glass art that tells the story of his traditional culture in a contemporary context. His work is sculptural and often depicts stylized birds\, fish\, or other creatures that are prominent in the history or stories of his tribe\, the Limmi Nation\, part of the Coast Salish culture. \nRegister in advance for this webinar: https://nmculture-org.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_7HbnTwrHT3e2KWH5ZUsTuA

SUMMARY:NM RESIDENT FREE SUNDAY
DESCRIPTION:  \nAbout the Museum of International Folk Art: http://www.internationalfolkart.org \n706 Camino Lejo\, on Museum Hill in Santa Fe\, NM 87505. (505) 476-1200. \nFounded in 1953 by Florence Dibell Bartlett\, the Museum of International Folk Art’s mission is to foster understanding of the traditional arts to illuminate human creativity and shape a humane world. The museum holds the world’s largest international folk art collection of more than 150\,000 objects from six continents and over 150 nations\, representing a broad range of global artists whose artistic expressions make Santa Fe an international crossroads of culture. For many visitors\, fascination with folk art begins upon seeing the whimsical toys and traditional objects within the Girard Collection. For others\, the international textiles\, ceramics\, carvings and other cultural treasures in the Neutrogena Collection provide the allure.  The museum’s historic and contemporary Latino and Hispano folk art collections\, spanning the Spanish Colonial period to modern-day New Mexico\, reflect how artists respond to their time and place in ways both delightful and sobering. In 2010\, the museum opened the Mark Naylor and Dale Gunn Gallery of Conscience\, where exhibitions encourage visitors to exchange ideas on complex issues of human rights and social justice

SUMMARY:William Mortensen: Impure Photography
DESCRIPTION:Heretical\, outspoken\, dramatic\, and a consummate showman\, William Mortensen (1897-1965) was one of the most controversial figures of twentieth-century photography\, locking horns with Ansel Adams in public debates over the direction and future of photography as an art form. The challenge Mortensen posed to photographers who would come to constitute the cannon of early twentieth-century art history is well documented\, with much of the drama played out across the pages of Camera Craft magazine in heated dispute between Mortensen and Adams\, leading the latter to famously dub Mortensen ‘the Anti-Christ”.   \nMortensen developed his career in Hollywood during the golden age of silent cinema\, and in 1931 moved to Laguna Beach and opened the William Mortensen School of Photography. There he taught students\, many of them amateur photographers\, the “Mortensen Method” of photography\, a formal approach to composition and content\, based in the psychology of perception and designed to engage the viewer on a visceral level.  \nOnce among the most influential and infamous photographers of his day Mortensen was almost completely forgotten by midcentury. Despite his success in the twenties and thirties\, he quickly fell out of fashion as the tides of photographic taste turned to favor modernist photographers such as Edward Weston\, Paul Stand\, Alfred Stieglitz\, and Adams. Mortensen has remained notoriously absent from histories of art and photography in the twentieth century\, though has recently enjoyed something of a revival.  \n  \nThis lecture will take place on Zoom and is FREE to attend.  Register here: https://nmculture-org.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_0yMsj_mYQaSnfLOuhvQIlA

SUMMARY:Stories\, Memories\, and Legacies: The Santa Fe Internment Camp and its Historical Marker 20th Anniversary Commemoration
DESCRIPTION:Located on a hill at the Frank S. Ortiz Park in Santa Fe\, NM\, stands a stone Marker\, placed there April 20\, 2002\, commemorating the Santa Fe Internment Camp (SFIC). Established in March of 1942\, the camp interned over 4\,500 Japanese immigrant men\, making it one of America’s largest prison camps for resident aliens in the United States during WWII. Please join the New Mexico History Museum (NMHM) and the New Mexico Japanese American Citizens League for an in-person/virtual symposium which will include speakers\, theatrical performances by the JACL Players\, short films\, and panel discussions to commemorate the events and (SFIC) Marker. Speakers aspire to inform and remind attendees of the historical existence of the U.S. Justice Department internment camp on the site of the present Casa Solana neighborhood\, and to memorialize the experience of thousands of Japanese immigrants and American-born citizens unjustly incarcerated there between 1942 and 1946\, as well as celebrate the courage of the Santa Fe community in the resolution of the Marker controversy. A related three-part exhibition will be on display in the NMHM from April 9 through April 30. The exhibition includes “Generational Legacies: The Santa Fe Internment Camp\,” “Confinement in the Land of Enchantment\,” and artifacts from the New Mexico History Museum’s collection. \nSpeaker Bios: \nDr. Gail Okawa relates her 18 years of research on the journey of her grandfather and other Issei men from Hawaii\, along with others who were imprisoned\, and how they survived their journey. \n“Through Lines—Past into Present: The Contemporary Climate” \nDiscussing past and present historical parallels and todays growing solidarity among diverse groups striving for human rights are: \nDavid Inoue\, Executive Director\, Japanese American Citizens League \nDr. Duncan Ryuken Williams-USC professor\, Buddhist priest and author of American Sutra \nVictor Yamada\, Project lead\, Confinement in the Land of Enchantment \nDr. Satsuki Ina\, co-founder\, Tsuru for Solidarity \n“The Marker Controversy: Thoughts 20 Years Later” \nMarker planning committee members recall the intense community opposition to memorializing the camp\, due in part to New Mexico’s heavy losses in the Bataan Death March\, and the courage of the Santa Fe community in the resolution of the Marker controversy. \nJACL Players enact stories inside and outside the barbed wire camps of Lordsburg and Santa Fe—including childhood memories of Santa Fe residents\, a former mayor\, a retired history teacher\, and the son of a camp guard. \n*Immediately following the symposium there will be a Pilgrimage to the SFIC Marker site located at: Frank S Ortiz Park\, 1474 La Loma Vista\, SF\, NM\, 87501 with a procession and brief ceremony. SUMMARY:Expressing Norwegian and American Identities through Dress
DESCRIPTION:Dress helps us fashion identity\, history\, community\, and place. Dress has been harnessed as a metaphor for both progress and stability\, the exotic and the utopian\, oppression and freedom\, belonging and resistance. Dressing with Purpose examines three Scandinavian dress traditions—Swedish folkdräkt\, Norwegian bunad\, and Sámi gákti—and traces their development during two centuries of social and political change across northern Europe. \nLearn more about the companion publication for Dressing with Purpose published by Indiana University Press: https://iupress.org/9780253058577/dressing-with-purpose/ \n Photo credits: Laurann Gilbertson

SUMMARY:Friends of History Wednesday Lecture Series Miguel Trujillo: New Mexico’s Unknown Civil Rights Hero
DESCRIPTION:When New Mexico became a state in 1912\, its constitution denied Indians the right to vote.  In 1948\, Miguel Trujillo\, a WWII Marine veteran from Laguna\, sued New Mexico and obtained the right to vote for Indians of the state.  This presentation tells his story. It encourages an understanding of the background for denying Indians the right to vote in 1912 and encourages people to think beyond the Three Peoples myth—Indians\, Hispanics\, and Anglos living in harmony—to the reality of the struggle that began with the Pueblo Revolt of 1680 and continues today. \nGordon Bronitsky grew up in Albuquerque and is trained as an archeologist (BA UNM 1971; PhD University of Arizona 1977).  For the last 28 years\, he has been the founder/president of Bronitsky and Associates\, and IndigeNOW!\, his non-profit production arm. This program works with Indigenous artists and performers\, both traditional and contemporary\, to bring their voices and messages to the world. \nYou can learn more about his work at indigenow.com \nLecture Link: \nhttps://friendsofhistorynm.org/event/miguel-trujillo-new-mexicos-unknown-civil-rights-hero/ \nPhoto Credit: Miguel Trujillo and Daughter\, 1943. SUMMARY:Dawn ’til Dusk Day
DESCRIPTION:Los Luceros Historic Site will extend its hours from sunrise to sunset on the first Sunday of each month. During this time\, entrance into Los Luceros will be FREE for New Mexico residents and includes access to the site’s visitor center\, historic buildings\, trails\, and picnic areas. \n \nThe early morning and late evening are ideal for bird watching at Los Luceros\, which boasts a large diversity of species including bald eagles\, hummingbirds\, migratory waterfowl\, as well as one of the largest concentrations of flicker woodpeckers in New Mexico. Also\, the edge of the Rio Grande on the property at sunset is an ideal location to view bats beginning their nightly feast. \nLos Luceros is fun for the whole family. Educational children’s activities and crafts will be available and change each month\, so there is always a new topic to learn about! Picnics are common and encouraged as families can bring a blanket to eat under the Cottonwood trees or enjoy one of our many benches in scenic locations throughout the site- including down by the river. We encourage kids to bring their bicycles and see the site in a fun new way. Please ask the front desk about special educational programs.* \nThe Dawn ‘til Dusk Days also offers artists a great opportunity to enjoy golden hour and extended times for painting\, sketching\, and landscape photography. The lighting\, historic buildings\, and scenery are ideal for portrait photography to capture the special moments and events in your life. \nWe hope to see you at the next Dawn ‘til Dusk day! \n \n*Tours and programs are subject to the Department of Cultural Affairs’ covid-safe practices as well as state and federal public health orders. Please call 505-476-1165.

SUMMARY:Painted Reflections: A Virtual Symposium for New....
DESCRIPTION:Official program is forthcoming. The event will include a virtual tour with the exhibition curators\, a panel discussion surrounding the origin of isomeric design\, a second discussion about future implications for isomeric design\, as well as several opportunities for conversations with the curators and contemporary artists. Speakers will include: Dr. Joseph Traugott\, Dr. Scott Ortman\, Tony Chavarria (Santa Clara Pueblo)\, and Dr. Bruce Bernstein\, among others.\n \n \n \nPainted Reflections emphasizes the sophisticated aesthetic qualities of Pueblo art through the study of reversible optical illusions and ambiguous figure-ground relationships. Beginning around 900 AD\, Ancestral Pueblo artists began producing new designs on their ceramics—they painted pairs of motifs called isomers\, or equal forms. From a conventional perspective\, these works appear as painted motifs on unpainted backgrounds\, but simultaneously\, they also appear as unpainted images on painted backdrops. Importantly\, the exhibition contextualizes isomeric design within larger artistic trends and trajectories\, bridging the gaps between art history\, anthropology\, and archaeology\, and includes examples of isomeric designs made by both ancestral and contemporary artists. Painted Reflections demonstrates the ways in which contemporary Indigenous artists are using isomeric design in their work\, placing ancestral ceramics in conversation with the innovations of contemporary artists.\n \n \n \nPainted Reflections is co-curated by Joseph Traugott\, Ph.D.\, retired curator at the New Mexico Museum of Art\, Antonio R. Chavarria (Santa Clara Pueblo)\, curator of ethnology at MIAC\, and Scott G. Ortman\, Ph.D.\, associate professor of anthropology at the University of Colorado—Boulder.\n \n \n \nThis program is made possible with the support of the New Mexico Humanities Council.\n \nAny views\, findings\, conclusions or recommendations expressed in this program do not necessarily represent those of the National Endowment for the Humanities or the New Mexico Humanities Council.\n \n \n \nRegister: https://nmculture-org.zoom.us/…/WN_901tjlTlQKq-U5X4ChqwkA

SUMMARY:ENGAGING THE FUTURE: Conversations with Goodman Fellowship Artist Robert Whitehair Begay (Navajo)
DESCRIPTION:Artist Statement: “My name is Robert Whitehair Begay\, I am currently 18 years old.  I am from Gallup\, New Mexico\, and I recently graduated high school in 2021. I am a tufa cast artist who learned to make tufa cast jewelry mainly from my father\, Darryl Dean Begay. My mother\, Rebecca T. Begay\, is also a jeweler and an artist. I’ve always enjoyed drawing and I started  craving tufa at age 4 years old—even at that age\, it was fun and exciting to make art pieces and go to shows with my parents and my 2 older brothers. In 2009\, my parents won the Best of Show at the SWAIA Santa Fe Indian Market\, and that was also the year I entered for the first time. I was 6 years old and won a first place ribbon for a silver tufa cast seed pot\, and also won a third place ribbon for a painting. That is something I’ll always remember.” More recently\, in August 2019\, I won Best of Youth at both the Gallup Inter-Tribal Ceremonial Market for a bracelet called\, “Cheii’s Land\,” and also won an award at SWAIA Santa Fe Indian Market for a bolo tie called\, “Cheii Whitehair.” \nRegister in advance for this webinar:  After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar. \n  \nRegistration link: https://nmculture-org.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_P1RgqxA8TJWTdzhuJrAzfQ?fbclid=IwAR2uVMnM4qJizp5YLS1mnCiTywbDKD_kVxDbgo82hPJrBrPwghFPVblm10E

SUMMARY:MAKE & TAKE @ MOIFA
DESCRIPTION:About the Museum of International Folk Art: http://www.internationalfolkart.org \n706 Camino Lejo\, on Museum Hill in Santa Fe\, NM 87505. In 2010\, the museum opened the Mark Naylor and Dale Gunn Gallery of Conscience\, where exhibitions encourage visitors to exchange ideas on complex issues of human rights and social justice. \n

SUMMARY:Exhibition Opening: Free Admission 5-7pm Curative Powers: New Mexico’s Hot Springs
DESCRIPTION:Curative Powers: New Mexico’s Hot Springs This exhibition explores well-known resorts as well as lesser-known hot springs. Ponce de Leon\, Montezuma\, and Faywood are a few among many areas whose history will be addressed. The nearly 90 photographs range from the late 19th century through the 1980s and document the evolution of how many of these springs were used and developed. Museum visitors will also see the stark change in how people dressed (or not) when they visited and enjoyed these hot springs. New Mexico attracted many people seeking respite from tuberculosis and other ailments\, and they typically frequented hot springs to aid in this relief. Exhibit opening is admission free. The exhibition runs March 18 – September 4\, 2022.
