SUMMARY:Native Pottery Demonstration Series Marlene and Dominic Melchor (Santo Domingo Pueblo)
DESCRIPTION:Mother and son duo Marlene Melchor and Dominic Melchor are potters from Santo Domingo Pueblo. Continuing the tradition of their community’s pottery-making\, Marlene is fourth-generation potter and Dominic is a fifth-generation potter. \nTheir pottery is an expression of their family’s heritage and the culture of Santo Domingo Pueblo. Santana Melchor was a renowed potter in the Pueblo\, and in recognition of her remarkable pots and bowls\, in the 1970s\, she represented Santo Domingo Pueblo during a visit to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington\, DC. Throughout her life and career\, she encouraged her daughters and son to continue the tradition of pottery-making at Santo Domingo—she passed on her special polishing stones\, materials\, and methods to make pottery to her daughters\, Crucita and Dolorita\, and her son\, Ray Melchor. \nSantana’s children worked together for many years to continue Melchor pottery—it continues today through Dolorita’s daughter\, Marlene\, and her son\, Dominic. Melchor ceramics are formed using the coil method. Each piece of pottery consists of clay\, a white cream slip\, red slip\, and black paint\, created by boiling plants that is applied with a yucca brush. The natural materials are gathered at a site located within the hills of Santo Domingo Pueblo. Each piece of pottery takes about three months to complete\, beginning from the initial process of creating the pottery\, sanding\, polishing\, painting\, and finally firing the pieces outdoors\, utilizing traditional firing methods. The designs on the pieces have also been passed down through the generations. \nMarlene creates a wide variety of pieces\, from large bowls to small jars. Dominic also creates small jars and has created newer pieces\, known as Santo Domingo Pueblo turtles. He makes large and small turtles and utilizes traditional Santo Domingo designs. Marlene and Dominic proudly continue the Melchor pottery tradition and more importantly\, Santana’s encouragement to work together as a family.  \nRegister: https://nmculture-org.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_OSEogTE2S9mtHF2-3oG87w

SUMMARY:ArtWorks Year End Celebration
DESCRIPTION:SANTA FE\, NM – Art has the power to transcend many challenges\, even a pandemic. The Partners in Education Foundation for the Santa Fe Public Schools (Partners) and the New Mexico Museum of Art (NMMA) are celebrating that power with an exhibit of student artwork and poetry created during this school year. \nThe exhibit\, “ArtWorks Works!\,” will feature more than 50 works including visual art and poetry created by students from seven Santa Fe public schools. The student works will be on display in the courtyard of the New Mexico Museum of Art\, 107 W. Palace Avenue\, on Friday\, May 6\, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Entry is free; masks are optional. \nStudents in Partners’ ArtWorks program were inspired to create their own works after viewing the exhibits “Poetic Justice: Judith F. Baca\, Mildred Howard\, and Jaune Quick-To-See Smith” and “Storytellers: Narrative Art and the West” at NMMA\, and “#mask: Creative Responses to the Global Pandemic” at the Museum of International Folk Art. Poems were created after students enjoyed a reading from Santa Fe Poet Laureate Darryl Lorenzo Wellington. \nArtWorks\, a program of the Partners in Education Foundation for the Santa Fe Public Schools\, provides arts programming\, including classroom workshops with trained Teaching Artists\, field trips to museums and performances\, and a series of poetry readings. \nSince its creation in 2001\, ArtWorks has grown to serve 73 teachers and 1\,800 students annually. ArtWorks partners closely with the Santa Fe Public Schools\, arts organizations\, artists and other stakeholders to build a bridge between Santa Fe’s arts community and schools. Based on the Lincoln Center Institute model of integrative arts learning\, ArtWorks provides hands-on and process-oriented experiences with art. Students participate and learn by making art\, viewing live performances and exhibits\, and inquiring and reflecting on these experiences. The ArtWorks program is open to teachers from pre-K to eighth grade in the Santa Fe Public Schools. In the midst of the pandemic\, this connection to community and creative expression is more important than ever. During the 2021-2022 school year\, ArtWorks adjusted its model to provide virtual field trips in order to continue connecting students to world-class art and local artists. \nThe Partners in Education Foundation has been raising funding and other resources to support teachers in the Santa Fe Public Schools for more than 34 years. ArtWorks is supported by the City of Santa Fe Arts & Culture Department\, Witter Bynner Foundation for Poetry\, Susan K. Black Foundation\, Melville Hankins Foundation\, New Mexico Arts\, and the Santa Fe Community Foundation\, along with the support of many private donors.

In 2019\, he spent three weeks in Santa Fe creating life-size paper mâche and clay monsters to populate the monster house. Kōno also wrote the chapter\, “Yōkai: An Artist’s Perspective\,” for the exhibition book\, Yōkai: Ghosts\, Demons\, & Monsters of Japan.  \nMisaki Yasaka is an artist\, a member of the yōkai art collective\, Hyakuyōbako (Box of 100 Yōkai)\, and a recent graduate of Kyoto’s Saga University of the Arts. She collaborates with Kōno to create yōkai-themed events in Kyoto and and performs as a yōkai at haunted spaces. She has exhibited her artwork in Japan and currently in MOIFA’s exhibition\, Yokai: Ghosts & Demons of Japan. She is also featured in the exhibition’s immersive Japanese ghost house performing traditional Japanese ghost stories. \nPhoto credits: Junya Kōno with his creation Ao Bōzu. SUMMARY:CLEARLY INDIGENOUS Conversations on Glass Art: Raven Skyriver (Tlingit) and Dan Friday (Lummi)
DESCRIPTION:The Museum of Indian Arts & Culture (MIAC) invites you to virtually join Raven Skyriver (Tlingit) and Dan Friday (Lummi) for the last iteration of our lecture series surrounding our current exhibition\, “Clearly Indigenous: Native Visions Reimagined in Glass.” \nRaven Skyriver has created a stunning body of works in glass\, of sleek lined fish and other animals that live in and around water. Growing up on Lopez Island in Washington\, in the Puget Sound\, Skyriver developed a reverence for the sea and its creatures. He has devoted his artistic endeavors to the creation in blown glass of realistic\, yet surreal\, sea creatures such as salmon\, sea lions\, whales\, and otters. \nDan Friday has become a leading glass artist over the past decade. While he has honed his technical expertise in working with glass\, he has also developed an approach to the content or meaning of his glass art that tells the story of his traditional culture in a contemporary context. His work is sculptural and often depicts stylized birds\, fish\, or other creatures that are prominent in the history or stories of his tribe\, the Limmi Nation\, part of the Coast Salish culture. \nRegister in advance for this webinar: https://nmculture-org.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_7HbnTwrHT3e2KWH5ZUsTuA

SUMMARY:NM RESIDENT FREE SUNDAY
DESCRIPTION:  \nAbout the Museum of International Folk Art: http://www.internationalfolkart.org \n706 Camino Lejo\, on Museum Hill in Santa Fe\, NM 87505. (505) 476-1200. \nFounded in 1953 by Florence Dibell Bartlett\, the Museum of International Folk Art’s mission is to foster understanding of the traditional arts to illuminate human creativity and shape a humane world. The museum holds the world’s largest international folk art collection of more than 150\,000 objects from six continents and over 150 nations\, representing a broad range of global artists whose artistic expressions make Santa Fe an international crossroads of culture. For many visitors\, fascination with folk art begins upon seeing the whimsical toys and traditional objects within the Girard Collection. For others\, the international textiles\, ceramics\, carvings and other cultural treasures in the Neutrogena Collection provide the allure.  The museum’s historic and contemporary Latino and Hispano folk art collections\, spanning the Spanish Colonial period to modern-day New Mexico\, reflect how artists respond to their time and place in ways both delightful and sobering. In 2010\, the museum opened the Mark Naylor and Dale Gunn Gallery of Conscience\, where exhibitions encourage visitors to exchange ideas on complex issues of human rights and social justice

SUMMARY:William Mortensen: Impure Photography
DESCRIPTION:Heretical\, outspoken\, dramatic\, and a consummate showman\, William Mortensen (1897-1965) was one of the most controversial figures of twentieth-century photography\, locking horns with Ansel Adams in public debates over the direction and future of photography as an art form. The challenge Mortensen posed to photographers who would come to constitute the cannon of early twentieth-century art history is well documented\, with much of the drama played out across the pages of Camera Craft magazine in heated dispute between Mortensen and Adams\, leading the latter to famously dub Mortensen ‘the Anti-Christ”.   \nMortensen developed his career in Hollywood during the golden age of silent cinema\, and in 1931 moved to Laguna Beach and opened the William Mortensen School of Photography. There he taught students\, many of them amateur photographers\, the “Mortensen Method” of photography\, a formal approach to composition and content\, based in the psychology of perception and designed to engage the viewer on a visceral level.  \nOnce among the most influential and infamous photographers of his day Mortensen was almost completely forgotten by midcentury. Despite his success in the twenties and thirties\, he quickly fell out of fashion as the tides of photographic taste turned to favor modernist photographers such as Edward Weston\, Paul Stand\, Alfred Stieglitz\, and Adams. Mortensen has remained notoriously absent from histories of art and photography in the twentieth century\, though has recently enjoyed something of a revival.  \n  \nThis lecture will take place on Zoom and is FREE to attend.  Register here: https://nmculture-org.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_0yMsj_mYQaSnfLOuhvQIlA

SUMMARY:Stories\, Memories\, and Legacies: The Santa Fe Internment Camp and its Historical Marker 20th Anniversary Commemoration
DESCRIPTION:Located on a hill at the Frank S. Ortiz Park in Santa Fe\, NM\, stands a stone Marker\, placed there April 20\, 2002\, commemorating the Santa Fe Internment Camp (SFIC). Established in March of 1942\, the camp interned over 4\,500 Japanese immigrant men\, making it one of America’s largest prison camps for resident aliens in the United States during WWII. Please join the New Mexico History Museum (NMHM) and the New Mexico Japanese American Citizens League for an in-person/virtual symposium which will include speakers\, theatrical performances by the JACL Players\, short films\, and panel discussions to commemorate the events and (SFIC) Marker. Speakers aspire to inform and remind attendees of the historical existence of the U.S. Justice Department internment camp on the site of the present Casa Solana neighborhood\, and to memorialize the experience of thousands of Japanese immigrants and American-born citizens unjustly incarcerated there between 1942 and 1946\, as well as celebrate the courage of the Santa Fe community in the resolution of the Marker controversy. A related three-part exhibition will be on display in the NMHM from April 9 through April 30. The exhibition includes “Generational Legacies: The Santa Fe Internment Camp\,” “Confinement in the Land of Enchantment\,” and artifacts from the New Mexico History Museum’s collection. \nSpeaker Bios: \nDr. Gail Okawa relates her 18 years of research on the journey of her grandfather and other Issei men from Hawaii\, along with others who were imprisoned\, and how they survived their journey. \n“Through Lines—Past into Present: The Contemporary Climate” \nDiscussing past and present historical parallels and todays growing solidarity among diverse groups striving for human rights are: \nDavid Inoue\, Executive Director\, Japanese American Citizens League \nDr. Duncan Ryuken Williams-USC professor\, Buddhist priest and author of American Sutra \nVictor Yamada\, Project lead\, Confinement in the Land of Enchantment \nDr. Satsuki Ina\, co-founder\, Tsuru for Solidarity \n“The Marker Controversy: Thoughts 20 Years Later” \nMarker planning committee members recall the intense community opposition to memorializing the camp\, due in part to New Mexico’s heavy losses in the Bataan Death March\, and the courage of the Santa Fe community in the resolution of the Marker controversy. \nJACL Players enact stories inside and outside the barbed wire camps of Lordsburg and Santa Fe—including childhood memories of Santa Fe residents\, a former mayor\, a retired history teacher\, and the son of a camp guard. \n*Immediately following the symposium there will be a Pilgrimage to the SFIC Marker site located at: Frank S Ortiz Park\, 1474 La Loma Vista\, SF\, NM\, 87501 with a procession and brief ceremony. Please meet at the park at 5:30pm. \nEvent schedule: \n10am-4:30pm: Symposium: NMHM and virtual \n4:30-6:30pm: Pilgrimage to Marker site (Please meet at the park at 5:30pm) \nExhibition: NMHM April 9-30\, 2022 \nTickets\, optional masks\, and proof of vaccination required for in-person seating. SUMMARY:Expressing Norwegian and American Identities through Dress
DESCRIPTION:Dress helps us fashion identity\, history\, community\, and place. Dress has been harnessed as a metaphor for both progress and stability\, the exotic and the utopian\, oppression and freedom\, belonging and resistance. Dressing with Purpose examines three Scandinavian dress traditions—Swedish folkdräkt\, Norwegian bunad\, and Sámi gákti—and traces their development during two centuries of social and political change across northern Europe. \nLearn more about the companion publication for Dressing with Purpose published by Indiana University Press: https://iupress.org/9780253058577/dressing-with-purpose/ \n Photo credits: Laurann Gilbertson
