Eleven objects from Europe\, three from Asia\, five from Africa\, five from Central America\, two representing the New Mexican-Hispano tradition\, and seventy from the USA (with several extraordinary “Outsider” creations).The majority of chairs are Anglo-American\, from New England vernacular to contemporary studio furniture.

SUMMARY:Chiles & Shards at Pueblo Blanco
DESCRIPTION:Our annual celebration of archaeology and cuisine of New Mexico will be held at Pueblo Blanco\, in the Galisteo Basin about 35 minutes south of Santa Fe. This secluded site is owned by the New Mexico State Land Office and private landowners who have graciously given us permission to hold this event. The site features about 1500 rooms organized around eight plazas\, reservoirs\, and petroglyphs. Portions of the site were excavated in 1912 by Nels Nelson and the University of New Mexico is currently carrying out research on the site and its environs. The adjacent clay quarry has supplied raw materials for ancient potters\, modern artists\, and brick manufacturers. The event will consist of scheduled site tours\, overland hikes\, pottery demonstrations by both archaeologists and Native American potters\, and lunch. Tour options will range from moderately strenuous site and rock art tours to strenuous back country hikes that also include important rock art. Tickets will be $95 per person and can only be purchased through the Museum Foundation. Contact Info: A detailed program with tour options and times will be published in the May FOA Newsletter. SUMMARY:Presentation: Fermentation in New Mexico Prehistory
DESCRIPTION:Lecturer/Presenter:  Glenna Dean\, New Mexico State Archaeologist.   \nMs. Dean holds graduate degrees in archaeology and botany and specializes in the study of people’s interactions with plants as revealed in charred seeds\, broken plant parts\, pollen grains\, basketry\, sandals\, and other textiles made of plant fibers.  Ms. Dean came to the New Mexico Historic Preservation division\, Department of Cultural Affairs\, in 1994 and was named New Mexico State Archaeologist in October\, 1997.  Her widely varied duties include public outreach\, such as the annual New Mexico Archaeology Fair and this presentation. SUMMARY:Tuff Stuff
DESCRIPTION:A dominant approach to the making of art calls for the sensitive use of art materials. Paint should be applied with a fluid stroke\, the surface of paper should be respected and not gouged\, and wood should be worked with the grain\, these are words of advice offered by artists and teachers. Derived from various traditions such as Eastern aesthetics\, European craftsmanship and guilds\, and 19th century art academies\, such directives limit the vocabulary of art.  \nSome 20th century art movements have spoken out\, violating these rules to produce work associated with angst\, rawness\, and distress. German Expressionists in the 1920s\, for example\, used harsh colors and bold marks to create stark political statements of opposition. In the 1980s\, Julian Schnabel became famous for his neo-expressionist paintings covered with broken shards of ceramics. \nThe artists in Tuff Stuff create beauty by aggressively manipulating their art materials. Wood hacked\, paper marred\, paint clumped\, and rubber stitched\, these are the basic vocabularies used to produce evocative works that provoke us in unexpected ways.
