SUMMARY:Sun Mountain Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Sun Mountain Gathering has activities for every age and interest.  Visitors can learn about archaeology and the ancient technology and traditional  arts of Native peoples in the Southwest. Exhibits on archaeology and native  foods are planned\, along with demonstrations of Native crafts\, including pottery  making\, flint-knapping\, friction fire-starting\, stone axe use\,  traditional gardening\, and a mock archaeology dig\, to name just a few. Visitors  will also have an opportunity to learn about traditional arts by trying their  hand at forming a coiled pot\, making rope from yucca\, making and painting a  replica of a parfleche\, using a traditional pump drill\, or making a gourd  rattle.  \nRepresentatives of Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary will be returning to the  Sun Mountain Gathering again this year\, affording  participants with an opportunity to see and pet a real wolf. In addition\, Hawks  Aloft will be on hand to present raptor education. \nAnother main attraction is the Atlatl Range. The atlatl and dart  were the first true and natural weapons system of the human race\, invented  thousands of years before the bow and arrow and used longer by humans than any  other weapon system yet developed. Festival visitors may stop by the Atlatl  Range to try their hand at spear throwing using replicas of prehistoric  atlatls.

Through a partnership with the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture both institutions present a new and creative group of young sculptors who share their newest works with us. \nThe panel discussion\, Shaping A True Social Context\, will feature these artists and their instructor Dana Chodzko. For those interested in the avenues young Native artists are exploring and who have not had the opportunity to view the exhibition Bare Nation this will be a terrific opportunity to hear these young artists and then view their work. \nThe following is a statement from the students participating in this exhibition: \nWe are culture based in sharing\, and sharing our art is a sacred tradition. \nAt the Institute of American Indian Arts we are students of life and art. \nThe objects we have created are a reflection of this and of who we are. \nEach of us has an inner strength and energy that is a powerful tool to help us overcome obstacles in life. We strive for personal growth and the exploration of our traditional arts and heritage in modern times. Tickets will be given out  starting at 1pm.   \n  \nWell known storyteller Steven  Alvarez presents a program of short contemporary native tales and music. Steven  Alvarez (Mescalero Apache\, Yaqui\, and Upper Tanana Athabascan) lives in  Anchorage where he works for the Native Alaskan Heritage Center as director of cultural education  and Strategic initiatives.  Raised in a multi-ethnic military family\, Steven had  the opportunity to grow up within many diverse cultures including Hispanic\,  Native American\, Hawaiian\, Japanese\, and all three coasts of the continental  U.S. He graduated from San Jose State University with Bachelor of Arts degrees  in Music Education (Voice and Percussion) and History with a minor in  Philosophy. He has been a life long musician\, performer\, and thespian. “CONNECTIONS” is a Steven Alvarez  production of three traditional stories about Native people reconnecting or  staying connected with their culture.  It is a one man theater piece fusing  traditional and contemporary performance art. Each skillfully woven story ends  with a contemporary song relating back to the story\, and the accompaniment of  that song is imbedded in beautiful films of still and moving images of  contemporary and historic photos of Native elders and people who represent the  wisdom and knowledge of the cultures.

DESCRIPTION:Joy Harjo is a vibrant multi-dimensional/multi-cultural talent. She’s a poet/songwriter\, sax player\, singer\, and author. Her roots extend from her birthplace in the Mvskoke Creek Indian Nation in Tulsa\, Oklahoma\, to Santa Fe where she attended the Institute  of American Indian Arts. After graduating from the University of New Mexico she began writing poetry that was multiply influenced by Southwestern Indian music her musical interests—including Nat King Cole and Charlie Parker—and native philosophies\, the native rights movements\, to the stopping place of wildly urban Los Angeles\, and eventually to her home now in Honolulu\, Hawaii.  \nShe is as well-known in the poetry world as the music\, winning numerous awards for her more than ten published works. Two of her more locally-known awards are the New Mexico Governor's Award for Excellence in Arts (1997) and the Witter Bynner Poetry Fellowship

DESCRIPTION:Mr. Don Bullis\, a resident of Rio Rancho and a member of numerous writing societies will give us insight as to how the Old West was tamed\, especially in territorial New Mexico!  \n  \nMr. Bullis is a retired deputy sheriff/criminal investigator who enjoys historical research and has become a prolific writer.  He has earned many awards for his writings and will have several of his books available for purchase and signing after the presentation. \n  \nWe’ll learn about the in-laws and the out-laws – and review the fact and fiction surrounding this fascinating era of our history.
