SUMMARY:Exhibition: Seeds of Change
DESCRIPTION:Five key "seeds"—corn\, potatoes\, diseases\, horses\, and sugar—form the core of this excellent exhibit. Each seed had a profound impact on the way people live\, and together they reshaped the very nature of life for humans\, plants\, and animals around the planet. \nThe exhibit is on display in the resource room of the Bosque Redondo Memorial at Fort Sumner State Monument.\, and is open daily from 8:00AM to 5:00PM. Two videos accompany the exhibit and are available on request. They are "Green Gold: From the Maya to the Moon" and "Seeds of Change." Educators should contact a monument ranger to schedule field trips and to obtain additional educational resources for this exhibit.

SUMMARY:A River Apart
DESCRIPTION:This exhibit is a fascinating case study in how cultures develop; how art\, culture and community are interwoven; and how art is created\, interpreted\, valued\, bought and sold. \nLocated along the central Rio Grande Valley in New Mexico and separated by that great river\, Cochiti and Santo Domingo Pueblos shared a ceramic tradition for centuries until increasing contact with outsiders ushered in tumultuous changes that set the pueblos on divergent paths. Cochiti Pueblo more freely modified its traditional forms of painted pottery to appeal to new markets while the Santo Domingo Pueblo shunned the influences of the tourist trade and art market\, continuing an artistic tradition that was conservative and insular. \nA River Apart: the Pottery of Cochiti and Santo Domingo Pueblos\, examines the pottery traditions of the two Pueblos to decipher what discoveries can be made and identities established through these representations of material culture. As the collection reveals\, the pottery represents more than anthropological artifacts or art for the marketplace. From this exhibit we learn much about the Pueblos’ history\, myths and legends\, communities\, and the various artists’ responses to influences from the outside world.

SUMMARY:Sun Mountain Gathering
DESCRIPTION:Sun Mountain Gathering has activities for every age and interest. Visitors can learn about archaeology and the ancient technology and traditional arts of Native peoples in the Southwest. Exhibits on archaeology and native foods are planned\, along with demonstrations of Native crafts\, including pottery making\, flint-knapping\, friction fire-starting\, stone axe use\, traditional gardening\, and a mock archaeology dig\, to name just a few. Visitors will also have an opportunity to learn about traditional arts by trying their hand at forming a coiled pot\, making rope from yucca\, making and painting a replica of a parfleche\, using a traditional pump drill\, or making a gourd rattle. \nRepresentatives of Wild Spirit Wolf Sanctuary will be returning to the Sun Mountain Gathering again this year\, affording participants with an opportunity to see and pet a real wolf. In addition\, Hawks Aloft will be on hand to present raptor education. \nAnother main attraction is the Atlatl Range. The atlatl and dart were the first true and natural weapons system of the human race\, invented thousands of years before the bow and arrow and used longer by humans than any other weapon system yet developed. Festival visitors may stop by the Atlatl Range to try their hand at spear throwing using replicas of prehistoric atlatls.

SUMMARY:Shaping a True Social Context
DESCRIPTION:Museum of Indian Arts and Culture/ \nLaboratory of Anthropology \n Santa Fe\, NM (September 4\, 2008) – The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture/Laboratory of Anthropology will present on Sunday\, \nSeptember 14\, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. a panel discussion\, Shaping A True Social Context. \nShaping A True Social Context is being held in conjunction with the current exhibition in the Museum’s Roland Sculpture Garden called Bare Nation. \nBare Nation features multi-media sculptures created by students from \nThe institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA). Through a partnership with the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture both institutions present a new and creative group of young sculptors who share their newest works with us. \nThe panel discussion\, Shaping A True Social Context\, will feature these artists and their instructor Dana Chodzko. For those interested in the avenues young Native artists are exploring and who have not had the opportunity to view the exhibition Bare Nation this will be a terrific opportunity to hear these young artists and then view their work. \nThe following is a statement from the students participating in this exhibition: \nWe are culture based in sharing\, and sharing our art is a sacred tradition. \nAt the Institute of American Indian Arts we are students of life and art. \nThe objects we have created are a reflection of this and of who we are. \nEach of us has an inner strength and energy that is a powerful tool to help us overcome obstacles in life. We strive for personal growth and the exploration of our traditional arts and heritage in modern times. We are connected to our environment and respect what we have learned from it. \nThe sculptors of IAIA: \nDuWayne Chee\, Navajo \nSteven Chrisjohn\, Oneida Nation\, Wolf Clan \nNick Estes\, Lakota/Sioux \nApril Holder\, Sac and Fox Nation\, Oklahoma \nAmber Johnson\, Korean \nKit Julianto\, Shoshone/Paiute/Navajo \nLuther Pilant III\, Creek/Cherokee \nCindy Schenandoah-Stanford\, Oneida Nation\, Wolf Clan \nMicheal Schweigman\, Oglala/Lakota \nTerry Wann-Keneson\, Osage \nThis exhibition of works by undergraduate students at IAIA\, in both the Arnold and Doris Roland Sculpture Garden and the glass case in the museum lobby\, was curated by Dana Chodzko\, art professor at IAIA and Robert Kasal\, research associate at MIAC. \nAdmission is free to New Mexico residents ($8 out-of-state) and seating is very limited. \nFor more information the public may call 505-476-1250. The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture is located on Museum Hill off Old Santa Fe Trail at 710 Camino Lejo. \nBare Nation: Sculptors from IAIA \nThe mission of the Museum of Indian Arts and Culture/Laboratory of Anthropology is to inspire appreciation for and knowledge of the diverse native arts\, histories\, languages\, and cultures of the Greater Southwest. Our core values are influenced by past\, present and future attitudes and principles. These core values are based on our respect for the diversity of Native peoples and though collaboration and inclusiveness we work with Native communities to include their voices in our exhibits and educational programs. \nThe institute of American Indian Arts (IAIA) is a multi-tribal center of higher education dedicated to the preservation\, study\, creative application\, and contemporary expression of American Indian and Alaska Native arts and culture. The guiding principles of IAIA include telling the Native American story\, fostering core values\, educating our students\, advancing self-determination\, fulfilling our local and national mandates\, and being a Native American center in a worldwide indigenous community. \n  \n
