DESCRIPTION:The Friends of Folk Art presents the 11th Annual Folk Art Flea! This year’s Flea will be the largest and most diverse in its history and will be in a spacious new location to accommodate folk art from around the world. The Flea will take place at the Santa Fe County Fairgrounds\, 3229 Rodeo Drive. Although admission is free\, members of Friends of Folk Art enjoy early admission to the Flea from 9 to 10 a.m. Public admission is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. \nAll proceeds benefit educational programs and exhibitions at the Museum of International Folk Art\, through the Museum of New Mexico Foundation\, a private nonprofit organization. \nIf you are not already a Foundation member\, you may join here. A Foundation membership is required before joining a Friends group. DESCRIPTION:The 35th Annual Festival Flamenco Alburquerque is returning to the Duke City from June 11-18\, and the National Hispanic Cultural Center (NHCC) is the place to be for several unique shows and incredible performances.  \nWho: Festival Flamenco Alburquerque is produced by the National Institute of Flamenco in partnership with the NHCC\, the University of New Mexico\, and Bernalillo County.  \nWhat: Festival Flamenco Alburquerque is the largest flamenco event outside of Spain and touches the lives of thousands of participants through workshops\, theatre shows\, tablao performances\, lecture series\, and free public programming.   \nThis year’s Festival Flamenco boasts seven U.S. premieres\, showcasing the dynamic range and expressive power of flamenco from its most traditional to its most avant-garde interpretations.  \nWhen: The NHCC will host three performances during the week-long festival. On June 11\, catch La Confluencia\, a production from Estévez / Paños y Compañía\, winners of the Spanish National Dance Prize for Choreography in 2019\, at 8 p.m. .  \nThen\, head back on Thursday\, June 16 at 8 p.m. for Eva Yerbabuena y Compañía in D’Madrugá. DESCRIPTION:May through November the New Mexico Museum of Art invites you to join us on one of our weekly Art Walking Tours of Santa Fe (weather permitting). Led by a docent\, the tour highlights the art and architectural history of downtown Santa Fe. Tours leave at 10 AM on Fridays from the steps of the Museum Gift Shop. June through October\, we also offer tours on Mondays at 10 AM. Tours are $20 per person\, children 16 and under free.  \n \nMuseum admission is included with the purchase of an Art Walking Tour ticket. Tickets may be purchased online here. Tours have limited capacity\, we encourage booking in advance. SUMMARY:Dawn ’til Dusk Day
DESCRIPTION:Los Luceros Historic Site will extend its hours from sunrise to sunset on the first Sunday of each month. During this time\, entrance into Los Luceros will be FREE for New Mexico residents and includes access to the site’s visitor center\, historic buildings\, trails\, and picnic areas. \n \nThe early morning and late evening are ideal for bird watching at Los Luceros\, which boasts a large diversity of species including bald eagles\, hummingbirds\, migratory waterfowl\, as well as one of the largest concentrations of flicker woodpeckers in New Mexico. Also\, the edge of the Rio Grande on the property at sunset is an ideal location to view bats beginning their nightly feast. \nLos Luceros is fun for the whole family. Educational children’s activities and crafts will be available and change each month\, so there is always a new topic to learn about! Picnics are common and encouraged as families can bring a blanket to eat under the Cottonwood trees or enjoy one of our many benches in scenic locations throughout the site- including down by the river. We encourage kids to bring their bicycles and see the site in a fun new way. Please ask the front desk about special educational programs.* \nThe Dawn ‘til Dusk Days also offers artists a great opportunity to enjoy golden hour and extended times for painting\, sketching\, and landscape photography. SUMMARY:A Day of Discussion\, Art and Poetry Dedicated to Poetic Justice
DESCRIPTION:The expression “poetic justice” describes the outcome of righting moral wrongs in a satisfying and ironically appropriate manner. Works by artists Judith F. Baca\, Mildred Howard and Jaune Quick-to-See Smith in the New Mexico Museum of Art’s Poetic Justice exhibit render that concept with memory\, history and emotion. Visitors have a special opportunity to hear from all three of these important artists as they discuss the importance of an artist’s voice in cultural and social discourse. \nOn May 28\, the Museum’s celebration of Poetic Justice: Judith F. Baca\, Mildred Howard\, and Jauen Quick-to-See Smith will be a multi-layered experience.  The day will begin 10:30 am with a hosted panel discussion. Baca\, Howard and Smith will reflect on their life and careers in art\, activism and education. Levi Romero and Edie Tsong\, two of the three New Mexico poets commissioned by the Museum to celebrate these pioneering artists\, will read selected poems. And\, later that day\, young New Mexican poets and writers under the age of 25 will share their short works at an open mike both in person and virtually. The entire museum will be free to the public all day. \nFor decades Baca\, Howard and Smith have created complex works that amplify voices and concerns often on the periphery. Participation in the women’s movement\, student activism and Native self-determination provided lessons\, tools and context for their art. By addressing cultural equity\, social priorities and their impact on communities\, these accomplished visual artists and teachers engage with issues that are both local and global.  \n

DESCRIPTION:The group will meet at 9:30 am at the Historic Los Poblanos Inn where we will enjoy a docent led tour featuring the work of architect John Gaw Meem\, new deal artists such as Gustave Baumann and Peter Hurd\, and the private collection of folk art collected by the Rembe family\, its current owners.  We will enjoy a box lunch on the portal overlooking the lavender fields. \nFollowing lunch\, we will board our bus and head to the Zimmerman Library on the campus of UNM. Guided by Kathy Flynn\, Executive Director of the New Deal Preservation Association (NDPA)\, we will tour the Library\, one of 25 buildings that John Gaw Meem designed for the university and an example of his finest work.  There are outstanding murals and fine handicrafts throughout that were created with New Deal funding.  From there\, we will stop at other buildings downtown that feature artwork\, part of the New Deal legacy in New Mexico. \n

SUMMARY:Mesa Talks: The Lucero Legacy by Rebecca Ward
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the second Mesa Talks lecture of the season. This is a lecture series between Mesa Prieta Petroglyph Project and Los Luceros Historic Site focusing on all things history and archaeology in New Mexico and the Southwest! This will be hosted in person at Los Luceros as well as streamed virtually on Facebook and YouTube.  \nThe Lucero Family has a long history both in Europe and the Americas but how exactly did their name come to be associated with Los Luceros Historic Site? In this Mesa Talk\, Ranger Rebecca Ward will discuss who the Lucero Family was in New Mexico and how they came to influence one of the largest land grants in Northern New Mexico in the 1700s and 1800s.  \nRebecca Ward is currently the interpretive ranger for Los Luceros Historic Site. She is the main site researcher and gives tours to the public. She has an MA from the University of Oklahoma in Museum Studies. She has worked as an interpreter and educator for the National Park Service and a private non-profit museum in northern Wyoming. Beginning her work at Los Luceros in 2020\, Rebecca plans to continue to expand her knowledge about Los Luceros through archival research and recording oral histories.

SUMMARY:ENGAGING THE FUTURE:  Conversations with Goodman Fellowship Artist Conversation with Carly Feddersen (Confederated Tibes of the Colville Reservation)
DESCRIPTION:Carly Feddersen was born and raised in Wenatchee\, Washington and comes from a long line of creative people. She is an enrolled member of the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation and of mixed European decent. Humor and irony are important elements in her work which is rooted in material culture and traditional stories of the Columbia Plateau. Feddersen received her Bachelor of Fine Art degree from the Institute of American Indian Arts in 2016 with a concentration in jewelry. She is a metalsmith and stone carver\, traditional basket maker\, and also creates works in glass and print. \nArtist Statement: With cheeky humor\, my work tells abbreviated stories that translate ideas with anthropomorphic and animistic themes into jewelry. Plateau material culture and creation stories are important sources of inspiration for me\, as are the stones I gather for use in my work. The jewelry I make is often a personification of the pieces of land they are made of. Through carving and shaping the rocks I collect near my home in Central Washington they take on new life and sometimes\, senses of their own. SUMMARY:Crafting New Pathways: A walking-stick-making workshop with Sámi artists Jenni Laiti and Tilde-Ristin Kuoljok
DESCRIPTION:The Sámi people are inhabiting their ancestral territory in the Arctic which encompasses large northern parts of Norway\, Sweden\, Finland\, and most of the Kola Peninsula in the Russian side of Sápmi in particular. The Sámi people are the only Indigenous people in the European Union and there are approximately 100\,000 Sámi. Traditional Sámi livelihoods include fishing\, hunting and gathering\, handicrafts\, and reindeer herding; these pursuits continue today\, incorporating modernized ways of practicing them.  \nThe Sámi have been a nomadic people living in the Arctic landscape in a reciprocal way. Walking has been the most conventional way of traveling in the pre-industrial fossil free world. There are over 350 words in the Sámi language for different kinds of walking\, and the walking stick has been an essential tool for moving around. \n

SUMMARY:Audubon Day:  A Celebration of Birds
DESCRIPTION:The event coincides with Birds: Spiritual Messengers of the Skies\, an exhibition currently on view at the Laboratory of Anthropology\, and celebrates the importance of birds across the Southwest. \nThe event schedule will be family friendly and includes live demonstrations and exhibit tours with the curator\, as well as a visit with live raptors from Hawks Aloft. \nAttendees will have the opportunity to see the exhibit\, which centers on Native relationships with birds\, as well as how archaeology is used to garner knowledge about the use and importance of birds. Audubon Day and the exhibition work in tandem to illustrate the prominence of birds within the environment\, fulfilling roles within our ecosystems and cultures. \nDiana Sherman\, Collections Manager for the Archeological Research Collections at the Center for New Mexico Archaeology\, a division of MIAC\, curated the exhibit and discusses the celebration. “Birds appear in nearly all facets of Native American culture\, both in the past and today. The spiritual power of birds extends to every culture\, everywhere.” \nThe celebration includes presentation of live birds of prey from Hawks Aloft\, a bird education and raptor rehabilitation program that provides the public an opportunity to meet these birds close up and learn about their physiological\, ecological\, and social characteristics. \nTwo special guests will be Marlon Magdalena of Jemez Pueblo and Mary Weahkee of Santa Clara Pueblo/Comanche. Marlon will be at the event to discuss the importance of birds in his culture and how he makes bird bone flutes and whistles\, as well as wooden flutes\, designed from traditional flutes he has studied. Mary\, who works for the Office of Archaeological Studies in Santa Fe\, will demonstrate how she makes turkey feather blankets in the traditional method practiced in the Southwest for millennia. \nLastly\, hourly tours of the birds exhibit will also be conducted by Diana Sherman. “Birds are essential beings for the earth’s success\,” Sherman says. “We have to protect the earth for their sake and in turn\, we will be protecting it for ourselves. Our fates are essentially intertwined; we will either fly or falter together!” \nThe Museum of Arts and Culture is located on Museum Hill\, 708 Camino Lejo\, Santa Fe\, NM. The exhibition\, Birds: Spiritual Messengers of the Skies\, may be viewed from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.\, at the Laboratory of Anthropology building\, just adjacent to the Museum. The exhibit closes on June 5.

SUMMARY:NMMNHS to host eclipse viewing event on May 15
DESCRIPTION:Join us at the New Mexico Museum of Natural History & Science (NMMNHS) on the evening of Sunday\, May 15 to catch the first total lunar eclipse that will be visible in New Mexico since 2019.  \nWhat: NMMNHS will be hosting an eclipse viewing party. Although the eclipse can be easily seen in the sky\, telescopes on the museum’s front plaza and upstairs decks that will provide closeup views of the moon’s signature red hue during the eclipse. Admission will be by donation and the event will be canceled if it’s cloudy.  \nStreaming video of the eclipse from professional observatories will be shown between the observing locations and some fun paper activities and information about the moon will be provided on table displays. Additionally\, live planetarium presentations will explain how eclipses happen and why this one is special.  \nWhen: Doors open at 8:45 p.m. on May 15. The event is slated to end at 11:30 p.m.  \nWhere: The event will be held at NMMNHS (1801 Mountain Rd NW). Only a part of the museum building will be open to allow access to the observatory and planetarium.  \nWhy: Total lunar eclipses are often spectacular\, and this particular eclipse has a few special attributes. Unlike some lunar eclipses\, the moon will move deep into Earth’s shadow on May 15\, creating a dark red hue around the moon when the eclipse reaches totality. Additionally\, the moon will be slightly larger in the sky since it will be near its closest orbital position.

DESCRIPTION:Beverley Spears founded Spears Architects in 1981 offering commercial and residential design\, historic preservation\, urban design and landscape architecture. In 2011 the firm\, reorganized as Spears Horn Architects\, was recognized by the American Institute of Architects as the New Mexico Firm of the Year. \n  \nIn 1974\, after earning a Master of Architecture degree from the University of Pennsylvania and completing her internship in Houston\, she moved to Santa Fe as a licensed architect.  She has been a licensed landscape architect since 1986. Beverley has lectured widely on architectural topics and is the author of American Adobes and also Early Churches of Mexico\, an Architect’s View\, both published by UNM Press.  Beverley received the New Mexico Architects Medal in 2000 for “contributions that have advanced the profession and the socially responsible role that architecture must perform within our greater society.”  In 2002\, she was elevated to the national College of Fellows of the American Institute of Architects. In 2003\, she was honored by the Old Santa Fe Association “for her contributions to the character and traditions of Santa Fe.”  The firm has received numerous historic preservation awards from the City of Santa Fe\, the State of New Mexico and the American Institute of Architects.  Spears Horn Architects’ projects include the Santa Fe Community Convention Center\, the Plaza Stage\, the Santa Fe Public Schools Administration Building\, the Academy for the Love of Learning\, and Santa Fe Prep Library. \n  \nBeverley purchased her first textiles in Guatemala in 1973. Her collection grew very slowly until the turn of this century when she became more serious about collecting.  Beverley now owns 517 Mayan textiles\, all of which are photographed and catalogued.  Beverley is a Research Associate of MOIFA and an avid student of Mayan textiles. \n  \n  \n

Then\, join us at the Center on May 14 for a creative writing workshop led by silva – titled “Gritos: On Finding the Sources of Our Voices” – designed to help aspiring writers find their deepest personal voices.  \nWho: ire’ne lara silva is the author of four poetry collections\, furia\, Blood Sugar Canto\, CUICACALLI/House of Song\, and FirstPoems\, two chapbooks\, Enduring Azucares and Hibiscus Tacos\, and a short story collection\, flesh to bone\, which won the Premio Aztlán Literary Prize.   \nShe and poet Dan Vera are also the co-editors of Imaniman: Poets Writing in the Anzaldúan Borderlands\, a collection of poetry and essays. SUMMARY:Native Pottery Demonstration Series Marlene and Dominic Melchor (Santo Domingo Pueblo)
DESCRIPTION:Mother and son duo Marlene Melchor and Dominic Melchor are potters from Santo Domingo Pueblo. Continuing the tradition of their community’s pottery-making\, Marlene is fourth-generation potter and Dominic is a fifth-generation potter. \nTheir pottery is an expression of their family’s heritage and the culture of Santo Domingo Pueblo. Santana Melchor was a renowed potter in the Pueblo\, and in recognition of her remarkable pots and bowls\, in the 1970s\, she represented Santo Domingo Pueblo during a visit to the Smithsonian Institution in Washington\, DC. Throughout her life and career\, she encouraged her daughters and son to continue the tradition of pottery-making at Santo Domingo—she passed on her special polishing stones\, materials\, and methods to make pottery to her daughters\, Crucita and Dolorita\, and her son\, Ray Melchor. \nSantana’s children worked together for many years to continue Melchor pottery—it continues today through Dolorita’s daughter\, Marlene\, and her son\, Dominic. Melchor ceramics are formed using the coil method. Each piece of pottery consists of clay\, a white cream slip\, red slip\, and black paint\, created by boiling plants that is applied with a yucca brush. The natural materials are gathered at a site located within the hills of Santo Domingo Pueblo. Each piece of pottery takes about three months to complete\, beginning from the initial process of creating the pottery\, sanding\, polishing\, painting\, and finally firing the pieces outdoors\, utilizing traditional firing methods. The designs on the pieces have also been passed down through the generations. \nMarlene creates a wide variety of pieces\, from large bowls to small jars. Dominic also creates small jars and has created newer pieces\, known as Santo Domingo Pueblo turtles. He makes large and small turtles and utilizes traditional Santo Domingo designs.
