SUMMARY:Pulling Strings The Marionettes and Art of Gustave Baumann
DESCRIPTION:Donated to the Museum in 1973 by his wife Jane Baumann\, the marionettes\, props\, and other stage material have been used in Christmas productions since 1935. Originally intended to amuse their daughter Anne in their home\, the marionettes quickly became well-known in the Santa Fe community and performances were soon offered annually in St. Francis auditorium in the Museum. Although the marionettes are much loved in Santa Fe\, there has never been a complete display of them in theatrical settings. \n  \nTo recreate the experience of viewing the marionettes on stage\, an audiotape will accompany the exhibition and give viewers the opportunity to hear actors perform sections of the scripts written by Gustave Baumann and his associates. \n  \n In addition to the staged marionettes\, the exhibition will present prints and paintings by Baumann that are part of the Museum’s collection of over 2\,000 works by the artist. Baumann’s works produced in New Mexico that relate to the theatrical performances of the marionettes will be emphasized.

SUMMARY:Let’s Take A Look with MIAC curators
DESCRIPTION:During this time\, curators from The Museum of Indian Arts and Culture and The Laboratory of Anthropology are in the lobby of MIAC to look at your unidentified treasures. Sometimes\, the discussion among the curators may become as much or more informative than the identification of the artifact  \n  \nThe event is always free and open to the public. \nUpcoming "Let's Take A Look' Events: \nWednesday\, January 21st\, 2009 \nWednesday\, February 18th \nWednesday\,  March 18th \nWednesday\, April  15th \nWednesday\, May 20th \n  \nFederal and State regulations prohibit the curators from appraising any artifact.

SUMMARY:Winter Traditions
DESCRIPTION:Storytelling is an important tradition in American Indian cultures. It is used to pass on cultural knowledge. For centuries\, Native Americans have gathered around campfires telling stories about the world around them including tales about animals and mystical beings. Traditionally\, the winter season is the only time appropriate to tell these stories. \nIn New Mexico there are over 22 tribes (19 Pueblos\, Mescalero and Jicarilla Apache\, and Navajo). Within each tribal community the oral tradition of storytelling varies. The topics are endless focusing on animals like the coyote\, bear or on insects like the spider and dragonfly and on different concepts of creation stories. Many stories are fables in nature\, where a lesson is taught and accepted modes of behavior are enforced. But to the majority of traditional Native Americans these stories are not just ordinary myths and legends but are a reflection of the rich oral tradition of their unique cultural history. \nOther traditional activities include the different dances that are in late December such as: \nArrow (Laguna Pueblo)\, Deer (Laguna Pueblo\, San Juan Pueblo)\, Turtle (San Juan Pueblo)\, Buffalo (Nambe Pueblo) and Matachine dances (San Juan Pueblo and Picuris Pueblo. A listing of winter dances at other Pueblos is listed on the NM tourism website at http://www.newmexico.org/native_america/pueblos/index.php \n

SUMMARY:MIAC Sunday Lecture Series SPECIAL Thanksgiving week lecture
DESCRIPTION:"Chocolate Heaven and Tobacco Saints: Indian Adaptations to Colonialism in Mesoamerica." \nPresented by Marcy Norton\, Professor of History\, George Washington University \nFollowed by a book signing of "Sacred Gifts\, Profane Pleasures: A History of Tobacco and Chocolate in the Atlantic World"\, and by a drinking chocolate tasting by Kakawa Chocolate House of Santa Fe \nAsk anyone what Europe is famous for\, and many will say the continent’s smoke-filled cafés and delectable chocolate. Difficult as it is to fathom\, prior to Christopher Columbus’s first voyage in 1492\, no one outside of the Americas had ever seen\, much less tasted\, tobacco or chocolate. Initially dismissed as dry leaves and an exotic Indian drink\, these two ingestibles would eventually permeate European culture and culinary life on a scale unsurpassed by any other New World import. In SACRED GIFTS\, PROFANE PLEASURES: A History of Tobacco and Chocolate in the Atlantic World historian Marcy Norton\, Ph.D.\, traces chocolate and tobacco’s pre-Columbian origins and reveals how these two goods became material and symbolic links to the pre-Hispanic past for colonized Indians and colonizing Europeans alike. \nMarcy Norton\, Ph.D. is Associate Professor of History at George Washington University. An expert on the history of chocolate and tobacco\, Dr. Norton has lectured extensively on these subjects. She is the Associate Editor of Tobacco in History and Culture: An Encyclopedia. . She grew up in Montreal and the Bay Area\, received her Ph.D. in History from the University of California\, Berkeley\, and now resides in Washington\, DC.

SUMMARY:Through the Lens: Creating Santa Fe
DESCRIPTION:Santa Fe\, NM—The Palace of the Governors is partnering with Santa Fe Community College on the exhibition\, Through the Lens: Creating Santa Fe\, as their contribution to Santa Fe’s celebration of its 400th anniversary. The photographic exhibition opens November 21\, 2008 and runs through October 25\, 2009. \nSince the 1850s many of the most recognized names in photography have focused their lenses in and on Santa Fe. Through their creative efforts they have documented a particular place and its visual history. They helped create that “place” and the mystique of Santa Fe. Photography has long been significant in the construction of notions of space and place\, landscape and identity\, and especially in Santa Fe\, however malleable visual meaning may be\, has helped define the geographical imagination. \nCurated by photographer and educator Krista Elrick and Palace of the Governor Curator of Photography\, Mary Anne Redding\, Through the Lens: Creating Santa Fe\, examines the history of Santa Fe through the visual record created by internationally respected photographers. \nBoth documentary and fine art photographers were drawn to the region’s land\, its peoples\, the regional architecture\, and the quality of light found nowhere else in the world. The project will showcase outstanding photographs that reveal the aesthetic excellence of the artists working in Santa Fe. While the images document the city\, they have also been used\, historically\, as part of the marketing of the Santa Fe image and as a draw to other artists.
