SUMMARY:Folklorist Nasario Garcia on Roots of the Rio Puerco Valley Lecture and booksigning for
DESCRIPTION:Author\, poet\, linguist\, and oral historian Nasario García turns to his childhood home\, the Río Puerco Valley southeast of Chaco Canyon in northern New Mexico\, for the setting of The Naked Rainbow and Other Stories (University of New Mexico Press)\, a collection of fictional short stories. \nThe tales are based on García's personal experiences or stories he heard about people or events while growing up in his valley. They illustrate the vibrant culture of rural northern New Mexico and its inhabitants with a cast of common characters\, above all women\, whose compassion\, willfulness\, humor\, observation\, and spirit reflect the rich heritage of the environment that inspired their creation. \nSome of García's characters proclaim their own goodness and live on to enjoy that righteousness; others fall victim to the shortcomings of human nature. Regardless\, laughter\, empathy\, and introspection are the common threads that connect these wonderful stories to one another. \nGarcía originally wrote these tales in his native tongue\, Spanish\, and later translated them into English. Both versions appear here with a bilingual glossary that places regional terms and local idioms side-by-side for those unfamiliar with northern New Mexico Spanish. \nGarcía is a folklorist and native New Mexican. He has published 10 books on Hispanic folklore and the oral history of Northern New Mexico and for three decades has dedicated his time to the preservation of New Mexico’s Hispanic culture and language. García is a popular lecturer and reader. A doctor of nineteenth-century Spanish literature\, García formerly taught at New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas. García lives in Santa Fe.

SUMMARY:Photographic Processes of the 19th Century in Santa Fe Through the Lens lecture series
DESCRIPTION:Taos native Barbara Lucero Sand has a BFA in photography from Northern Arizona University and received her MFA in photographic studies from Arizona State University under the directorship of the renowned photo historian and art critic Bill Jay.  Her creative work focuses on historic photographic processes. In addition to her MFA\, Lucero Sand received a graduate certificate in museum studies in anthropology while director of Northlight Gallery\, ASU's fine art photographic collection and exhibition space. \nWhile director\, she organized numerous exhibitions\, lectures and educational programs.  She was also a contributing writer and editor on a number of photo-related books and publications. She has taught collections care and exhibition planning and design at the undergraduate and graduate levels at ASU and as a faculty member in museum studies at the Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe. Lucero Sand has worked as curator and as a curatorial team member on a number of major international and national exhibitions at IAIA\, ASU Art Museum and at the National Hispanic Cultural Center Art Museum in Albuquerque. \n   Through the Lens: Creating Santa Fe runs through Oct. 25 at the Palace. \nSince the 1850s\, many of the most-recognized names in photography have focused their lenses in and on Santa Fe. Through their creative efforts\, they have documented the city and its visual history\, helping to create the mystique of Santa Fe. Photography has long been significant in the construction of notions of space and place\, landscape and identity and\, especially in Santa Fe\, has helped define the geographical imagination. Curated by photographer and educator Krista Elrick and Palace of the Governors Curator of Photography\, Mary Anne Redding\, Through the Lens examines the history of Santa Fe through the visual record created by internationally respected photographers. \nBoth documentary and fine art photographers were drawn to the region’s land\, its peoples\, the regional architecture\, and the quality of light found nowhere else in the world. The project showcases outstanding photographs that reveal the aesthetic excellence of the artists working in Santa Fe. While the images document the city\, they have also been used\, historically\, as part of the marketing of the Santa Fe image and as a draw to other artists. \n

SUMMARY:Impacts of a New Mexico case on church-state separation Library brown-bag lecture
DESCRIPTION:In 1951\, the U.S. Supreme Court\, with its "Dixon Decision\," bitterly divided the small rural community in northern New Mexico. A group of Protestants\, led by a Presbyterian\, had formed a school committee and in 1947 brought suit in state court against the Board of Education. Its concern: Catholic nuns wearing habits were teaching religion as part of the regular curriculum. \nThat was nothing new in New Mexico\, where the first schools\, long before statehood\, were Catholic schools. From them\, the later public schools pulled their first teachers.   \nThe case made its way to the nation's high court\, which  relied on the constitutional separation of church and state to rule in favor of the Protestants\, a decision that many at the time described as "wrenching" to Catholics. \n

SUMMARY:Fashioning New Mexico What We Wore to Mark Life’s Passages
DESCRIPTION:  \n \n  \n \nLife’s passages carry layers of meaning and memory – the foods we eat\, the songs we sing\, the clothes we wear. The ways in which our predecessors chose to clothe themselves – for a baptism\, a prom\, a war\, or an opera opening – have been collected by the New Mexico History Museum for 100 years. As part of the Museum’s grand opening May 24\, many of those outfits are\, shall we say\, coming out of the closet. \nFashioning New Mexico\, the premiere exhibition in the Museum’s Changing Gallery\, explores what our clothes say about us and what they mean to us. Some of the celebratory events depicted in it are singular to New Mexico\, such as fiestas and Native American ceremonies. Others are the classic passages that form the basis of our lives and of the tales we have told since the earliest campfire was lit: a child’s birth\, coming of age\, marriage\, anniversaries\, ascents to power and going to war. \nThe Museum’s collection of nearly 4\,000 costumes and accessories\, with many pieces dating from the 1830s to the 1970s\, has long lacked the space it takes for a proper exhibit. The opening of the Museum’s second-floor\, 5\,700-square-foot Changing Gallery finally makes it possible. \nTo senior curator Louise Stiver\, it’s both a celebration and a swan song\, as she unveils her final exhibition. \n“This is the first time for the Museum to focus on our collection of costumes and accessories\,” she said. “A number of the items in the collection represent celebrations that occurred here in New Mexico – from weddings to going to the opera to entering military service. There’s a little bit of everything for people to see.” \nBut\, she cautions\, “this is not a fashion show.” \n“Rather\, it will focus on how people fashioned their lives. Some clothing might stand alone\, while others will be part of a vignette that might include furniture\, portraits\, weaponry\, accessories\, historical documents and other props to tell the story.” \nOther features include a high-seated “penny farthing” bicycle\, and interactive features where a visitor can practice tying a corset\, using the secret language of fans or virtually “trying on” some of the outfits in the exhibit. Student-interns from New Mexico Highlands University are preparing a station that uses computerized images on a mirror that let visitors virtually “try on” some of the outfits in the exhibition. \nWhat’s coming out of the closet? Plenty – about 350 items\, including a dozen 19th- and 20th-century wedding gowns\, flapper dresses\, flamenco outfits\, WWI uniforms\, inaugural ballgowns and an assortment of underwear through the centuries. Thirty of the Museum’s classic fans will reveal a time when delicate painting and embroidery turned a utilitarian item into art. \nDonors through the years have included the heirs of the Harroun\, Manderfield and Armijo families of Santa Fe\, the McMillans of Socorro\, the Jaramillos from northern New Mexico\, and the McDonalds of Carrizozo\, to name a few. \nThe pieces cover modern history as well\, including a turquoise outfit recalling the grandeur of Dangerous Liaisons-era France. The outfit\, worn by Santa Fe artist Paul Stephen Valdez to the Equality New Mexico Gala in 2008\, was loaned by him for this special exhibition. \nConservator Rebecca Tinkham has worked on every costume in the exhibition\, painstakingly repairing the rips and frays of time\, a task that prior to now also made displaying the items problematic. With the Museum’s climate-controlled galleries\, fragile fabrics can withstand the rigors of exhibition. \nBesides mending seams\, Tinkham has found herself working on corsets\, hoops\, bustles\, pantaloons and petticoats. \n“These days\, the clothes fit the body\,” she said. “But for a good part of history\, the body was made to fit the clothes with bustles\, hoops\, metal bust improvers.” \nOne of the things that most impressed her about the collection was how well New Mexicans dressed. \n“A lot of the clothes are just so pretty to look at\,” Tinkham said. “There were a lot of people in New Mexico who did dress to style. They were definitely stylish for the period.” \nThose period-specific styles are also revealed in the Museum’s archival photos accompanying the exhibit\, which buttress the notion of these being the clothes New Mexicans lived\, worked and played in. \nAs they have for the last century\, the collection of artifacts and photographs detailing our stylish ways would have continued. But without the new exhibition gallery\, the wait to see them would have been even longer. \n“The New Mexico History Museum opens a new chapter in the life of the Palace of the Governors\,” Stiver said. “This new gallery allows us to expand our Museum’s mission and display exceptional examples from the Palace’s collections never before seen by the public.”

SUMMARY:Photographer Laura Gilpin Comes to Life EVENT CANCELLED
DESCRIPTION:Meet Laura Gilpin\, circa 1954. A confident\, ebullient woman in her early 60s\, the Colorado native and Santa Fe resident packed in her equipment on horseback to photograph the source of the Rio Grande\, did studio portraits for society matrons\, directed pilots to "fly low" over Shiprock to capture the light and shadows from every possible angle. Laura Gilpin experimented with every subject and photographic technique for over fifty-five years before receiving widespread national recognition for it. \nDeborah Blanche brings Miss Gilpin to life with a performance that includes a slide show with images from her first Lumiere color prints and those in her best-known book\, The Enduring Navajo. She answers questions and tells some of the behind-the-camera stories about the photographic retrospective that parallels Gilpin's life. \n Blanche has worked in theatre\, storytelling\, film\, radio and TV since her teens. After completing a Master of Fine Arts Degree at the University of Oklahoma\, she studied in Great Britain where a passion for "original" theatre production was ignited. Since that time\, she has become best known for the one-woman plays\, Chautauqua characters and storytelling programs that she researches\, writes and performs locally\, nationally and internationally. She also offers workshops\, coaching sessions\, and lecture-demonstrations related to her performances and theatrical skills. \nBlanche's other chautauqua characters include Jeannette Rankin\, the first woman elected to Congress; Elizabeth Bacon Custer (yes\, wife of that Custer) and New Mexico author Erna Fergusson. \nThrough the Lens: Creating Santa Fe charts the development of the City Different through the work of many photographers over the decades.  \n Since the 1850s\, many of the most-recognized names in photography have focused their lenses in and on Santa Fe. Through their creative efforts\, they have documented the city and its visual history\, helping to create the mystique of Santa Fe. Photography has long been significant in the construction of notions of space and place\, landscape and identity and\, especially in Santa Fe\, has helped define the geographical imagination. Both documentary and fine art photographers were drawn to the region’s land\, its peoples\, the regional architecture\, and the quality of light found nowhere else in the world. \nThe project\, curated by photographer and educator Krista Elrick and Palace of the Governors Curator of Photography Mary Anne Redding\, showcases outstanding photographs that reveal the aesthetic excellence of the artists working in Santa Fe. While the images document the city\, they have also been used\, historically\, as part of the marketing of the Santa Fe image and as a draw to other artists.    \n
