DESCRIPTION:Tough economic times hardly faze the folks ready to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Mountain Man Rendezvous in the Palace of the Governors Courtyard. From Aug. 5-9 (see daily schedule below)\, craftspeople\, re-enactors\, authors and musicians will share a wealth of know-how on the “simple life” of another era – the early 1800s\, to be precise. \nAs a special addition to this year’s lineup\, award-winning author Johnny D. Boggs will speak at 2 pm Sunday\, Aug. 9\, on “Mountain Men in Literature\, Film and Pop Culture.” Honored by three Spur Awards and a Western Heritage Wrangler Award\, Boggs\, a Santa Fe resident\, is an engaging interpreter of the American West. His lecture\, in the New Mexico History  Museum auditorium\, will examine the popularity of Mountain Men from early dime novels in the 1800s to serious literary studies of the 20th century\, from movies like The Big Trail and Jeremiah Johnson to the rise of buck-skinning festivals and reenactments. (For more on Boggs\, go to http://www.johnnydboggs.com/.) \nAmong the earliest Anglos to reach America’s West\, Mountain Men were hunters and fur trappers whose rugged lives left Rocky Mountain legends from roughly 1820-1840. Their survival skills\, including trading with Native Americans (and sometimes evading them)\, built a foundation of knowledge for the settlers who followed on the Santa Fe  Trail. Among the 1\,000 who roamed the West during the fur trade’s heyday were folks like Kit Carson and Jedediah Smith. \nThe tradition of the rendezvous started in 1825. A gathering to exchange pelts for supplies and reorganize trapping units evolved into a month-long carnival in the wilderness. According to one observer: "Mountain companies … make as crazy a set of men I ever saw." There were horse races\, running races\, card games\, checkers\, target shooting\, singing and gambling. Whiskey drinking\, not surprisingly\, accompanied it all. \nWhile the Museum’s rendezvous won’t include alcohol\, this family-friendly event – free but for the opening morning’s preview – includes period music\, the display and sale of authentic and reproduced items\, and games and hands-on activities for children. From 10 am to noon on Friday\, Aug. 7\, visit the touch table and “discovery box” for a true feel of the everyday items used by these pioneers – as well as a few slick\, furry and flat-out hair-raising ones. \nMichael Combs and his son\, Dependable Hickory Strongheart\, will perform traditional Mountain Man music from 5:30-7 pm on Friday\, Aug. 7. Rooted in the songs and dances of their birthlands – Scotland\, Quebec\, England and more – Mountain Men accompanied their tunes with banjos\, fiddles\, concertinas\, clapping\, stomps and improvised dance steps. \nOn Saturday\, Aug. 8\, from 10 am to noon\, Scot Bol from the Wildlife Center\, New Mexico’s only wildlife hospital and education center\, will show off some of the birds that sail our Western skies. \nEnter for free through the Blue Gate\, just south of the History Museum’s entrance at 113 Lincoln Avenue. Or add a visit to the History Museum and the Palace of the Governors\, where children 16 and under are always free. SUMMARY:Juggling Identities: Identity and Authenticity Among the Crypto-Jews Lecture and booksigning
DESCRIPTION:Seth D. Kunin\, Vice Chancellor and Head of Faculty for Britain's Durham University\, will speak on his new book\, Juggling Identities: Identity and Authenticity Among the Crypto-Jews in the New Mexico History Museum Auditorium. For the past 13 years\, Dr. Kunin has done ethnographic research among the crypto-Jews of New Mexico. He has published a number of books on aspects of biblical and Jewish culture from an anthropological and structuralist perspective and has written about the development of theories of religion in such works as Themes and Issues in Judaism and Religion: The Modern Theories. \nCritiquing scholars who challenge the authenticity of these individuals\, Seth D. Kunin builds a solid link between the crypto-Jews of New Mexico and their Spanish ancestors\, offering the strongest evidence yet of their ethnic and religious origins.  \n \nKunin adopts a unique approach to the lives of modern crypto-Jews\, concentrating primarily on their understanding of Jewish tradition and the meaning they ascribe to ritual. He illuminates the complexity of this community\, in which individuals and groups perform the same practice in diverse ways. Kunin supplements his ethnographic research with broader theories concerning the nature of identity and memory\, which is especially applicable to crypto-Jews\, whose culture resides mainly in memory. Kunin's work has wider implications\, not only for other forms of crypto-Judaism (such as those found in the former Soviet Union) but also for the study of Judaism's fluid nature\, which helps adherents adapt to new circumstance and knowledge. Finally\, Kunin compares crypto-Judaism's intricate ancestry with that of other ethnic communities living in the United States. \n

SUMMARY:"Cherokee Phoenix: Advent of a Newspaper" Brainpower & Brownbags lecture series
DESCRIPTION:Brannon's 2005 book\, "Cherokee Phoenix: Advent ofa Newspaper" is the first history of the Cherokee Phoenix\, the newspaper of the Cherokee Nation\, printed from 1828 to 1834 in New Echota\, Georgia\, the last capital of the Cherokee. It pays special attention to the type\, printing press\, and the paper used during the life of the Phoenix. The first issue was published February 21\, 1828\, using the 85-character Cherokee syllabary completed by Sequoyah just seven years earlier. \nThe book is letterpress-printed on handmade cotton paper using 11-point Garamond types. The book is handbound\, modeled after the binding style of three circa 1830 quarter-cloth books published in Kentucky and Ohio. It includes full size reproductions of the hand impressions of excavated New Echota type. (Six copies of the edition\, specially bound in red quarter-leather\, contained hand impressions of type found at New Echota. SUMMARY:A History of the Ancient Southwest Lecture and booksigning
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Stephen Lekson\, a curator and associate professor of anthropology at the University of Colorado\, received his doctorate in anthropology from the University of New Mexico. He has more than 25 years of experience in Southwestern archaeology\, with field research in Chaco Canyon\, the Mesa Verde region\, the Rio Grande\, the Mimbres area\, and the Hohokam region of southern Arizona. He has worked for the National Park Service\, Arizona State Museum and the Museum of New Mexico. \nFrom 1992-95\, he was president of the Crow Canyon Archaeological Center. Dr. Lekson's books include Intrigue of the Past: Discovering Archaeology in New Mexico; Chaco Canyon: A Center and Its World; and Great Pueblo Architecture of Chaco Canyon\, New Mexico.  He has been an invited speaker at many conferences and public lectures\, including the Smithosnian Institution\, the Archaeological Institute of AMerica\, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Arts. He has been a featured speaker on several radio and television specials\, including National Public Radio\, the Discovery Channel and the History Channel. \nIn his 1999 book\, The Chaco Meridian: Centers of Power in the Ancient Southwest\, Dr. Lekson argued that Anasazi prehistory begins at Chaco Canyon\, where a small group of people resided beginning around 900 AD. By 1100 AD or so\, Chaco had become a ceremonial center\, the like of which had not so far been seen in the American southwest. But something happened\, and in 1125\, building stopped at Chaco. Construction at Aztec Ruin\, located north of Chaco Canyon\, began in the Chacoan style around 1110\, and continued until around 1275. The earliest dates for Paquime\, or Casas Grandes\, a center larger than Chaco but far to the south in Mexico\, are 1250 to 1300 and they extend to around 1500 AD. And all three are aligned on approximately the same longitude; 107 degrees\, 57 minutes and 25 seconds. Lekson argues that this is no coincidence\, that the elite families of all three sites were related\, and that the alignment was an intentional and meaningful one. \nBut the argument isn't\, of course\, that simple\, and in fact Lekson documents similarities–and differences–between ceramic styles and building styles and the presence of exotic materials such as macaws\, gulf coast shells and copper bells. Interestingly\, Lekson interweaves information from Native American origin myths\, reminiscent of the work of anthropologist Robert Hall.  \nHis findings reveal a “livelier” Southwest than that which we have become accustom to hearing. Dr. Lekson brings new insight to how “a pervasive Southwestern Mystique . . . has glossed over ancient (and modern) realities.” It is a new telling of an old story.

This program provides the children an opportunity to learn from their parents and grandparents and to continue the cultural economic development supported by the Portal. \nAlong the south side of the Palace of The                 Governors\, sit Native American artists and craftspeople who sell                 their handmade goods to tourists and local Santa Feans almost                 every day of the year\, rain or shine. The 900+ vendors represent                 forty-one tribes\, pueblos\, chapters and villages in New Mexico\,                 the Navajo Nation\, and parts of Arizona. The Vendors Committee                 creates and enforces rules for those who sell their work under                 the portal. DESCRIPTION:Krista Elrick grew up in both the United States and Guatemala and has lived in Santa Fe with her husband since 1993. In 1990\, she received an MFA in photography from Arizona State University and\, in 1980\, a BA in cultural anthropology from Hampshire College. Her work has taken her to Europe\, the Middle East\, Central America and many regions in the United States where she has explored the relationship of people to their land\, families and past. She has collaborated on projects with writers\, folklorists and historians. \nIn addition to her work as a photographer\, Elrick teaches photography workshops and college courses. She offers a series of lectures about the photography of the Southwest through the New Mexico Humanities Council. In her slide presentations\, historical context is examined in the lives and work of photographers. \nElrick has held positions as visual arts director for the Western States Arts Federation and the Arizona Commission on the Arts. Through their creative efforts\, they have documented the city and its visual history\, helping to create the mystique of Santa Fe. DESCRIPTION:Born in 1930\, Paul Fusco has worked internationally as a photographer and written several books\, including RFK Funeral Train ($50) and Chernobyl Legacy ($150). \nHe studied photojournalism at Ohio  University\, where he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in 1957. He moved to New York City and started his career as a staff photographer with Look\, where he remained until 1971. In this role he produced important reportages on social issues in the US\, including the plight of destitute miners in Kentucky; Latino ghetto life in New York City; cultural experimentation in California; African-American life in the Mississippi delta; religious proselytizing in the South; and migrant laborers. He also worked in England\, Israel\, Egypt\, Japan\, Southeast Asia\, Brazil\, Chile and Mexico\, and made an extended study of the Iron Curtain countries\, from northern Finland to Iran.  \nAfter Look closed down\, Fusco approached Magnum Photos\, becoming an associate in 1973 and a full member the following year. His photography has been published widely in major US magazines including Time\, Life\, Newsweek\, the New York Times Magazine\, Mother Jones and Psychology Today\, as well as in other publications worldwide.  \n Fusco moved to Mill Valley\,  California\, in the early 1980s to photograph the lives of the oppressed and of those with alternative lifestyles. Among his latest subjects are people living with AIDS in California\, homelessness and the welfare system in New York\, and the Zapatista uprising in the Mexican state of Chiapas. He has also worked on a long-term project documenting Belarussian children and adults sickened by radioactive fallout from the Chernobyl explosion. He is now based in New York   City.   \n  \n

SUMMARY:Photographer Susan Meiselas Lecture and Booksigning A Photo Archives and VERVE Gallery event
DESCRIPTION:Susan Meiselas received her B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College and her M.A. in visual education from Harvard University. Her first major photographic essay focused on the lives of women doing striptease at New England country fairs. She photographed the carnivals during three consecutive summers while teaching photography in the New York public schools. Carnival Strippers was published by Farrar\, Straus & Giroux in 1976. A selection was installed at the Whitney Museum of Art in June 2000. The original book was revised and reprinted by the Whitney Museum and Steidl Verlag in 2003.  \nMeiselas joined Magnum Photos in 1976 and has worked as a freelance photographer since then. She is best known for her coverage of the insurrection in Nicaragua and her documentation of human rights issues in Latin America\, which were published widely throughout the world. In 1981\, Pantheon published her second monograph\, Nicaragua\, June 1978-July 1979\, which will be reprinted by Aperture\, fall 2008. Meiselas served as an editor and contributor to the book El Salvador: The Work of Thirty Photographers (Writers & Readers\, 1983) and edited Chile from Within (W.W. Norton\, 1991)\, featuring work by photographers living under the Pinochet regime.  \nShe has co-directed two films: Living at Risk: The Story of a Nicaraguan Family (1986) and Pictures from a Revolution (1991) with Richard P. Rogers and Alfred Guzzetti.  \nIn 1997\, she completed a six-year project curating a 100-year photographic history of Kurdistan\, and integrated her own work into the book entitled Kurdistan: In the Shadow of History Random House\, 1997; reprinted by the University of Chicago Press\, 2008).  \nMeiselas then created the website\, www.akaKURDISTAN.com\, an online archive of collective memory; as well as an exhibition that launched at the Menil Collection in Houston\, and traveled for eight years to several venues in the United States and Europe. Her 2001 monograph\, Pandora's Box (Magnum Editions/Trebruk) which explores a New York S & M club\, has been exhibited both at home and abroad. In 2003\, Encounters with the Dani was featured as an installation in the International Center of Photography's Triennial "Strangers" and co-published by ICP/Steidl Verlag. The book explores a 60-year history of outsiders' discovery and interactions with the Dani\, an indigenous people of the highlands of Papua in Indonesia.  \nMeiselas has had one-woman exhibitions in Paris\, Madrid\, Amsterdam\, London\, Los Angeles\, Chicago and New York. Her work is included in American and international collections. Honorary awards of recognition include: the Robert Capa Gold Medal for "outstanding courage and reporting" by the Overseas Press Club for her work in Nicaragua (1979); the Leica Award for Excellence (1982); the Engelhard Award from the Institute of Contemporary Art (1985); the Maria Moors Cabot Prize from Columbia University for her coverage of Latin America (1994); the Hasselblad Foundation Photography prize (1994) and most recently\, the Cornell Capa Infinity Award (2005). In 1992\, she was named a MacArthur Fellow.  \nA major U.S. overview highlighting key moments in Meiselas' documentary process will be exhibited at the International Center for Photography in the fall 2008.   \n

SUMMARY:Folklorist Nasario Garcia on Roots of the Rio Puerco Valley Lecture and booksigning for
DESCRIPTION:Author\, poet\, linguist\, and oral historian Nasario García turns to his childhood  home\, the Río Puerco Valley southeast of Chaco Canyon in northern New Mexico\,  for the setting of The Naked Rainbow and Other Stories (University of  New Mexico Press)\, a collection of fictional short stories.   \nThe tales are based on García's personal experiences or stories he heard  about people or events while growing up in his valley. They illustrate the  vibrant culture of rural northern New Mexico and its inhabitants with a cast of  common characters\, above all women\, whose compassion\, willfulness\, humor\,  observation\, and spirit reflect the rich heritage of the environment that  inspired their creation.  \nSome of García's characters proclaim their own goodness and live on to enjoy  that righteousness; others fall victim to the shortcomings of human nature.  Regardless\, laughter\, empathy\, and introspection are the common threads that  connect these wonderful stories to one another.  \nGarcía originally wrote these tales in his native tongue\, Spanish\, and later  translated them into English. Both versions appear here with a bilingual  glossary that places regional terms and local idioms side-by-side for those  unfamiliar with northern New Mexico Spanish. \nGarcía  is a folklorist and native New Mexican. He has published 10 books on Hispanic  folklore and the oral history of Northern New Mexico and for three decades has  dedicated his time to the preservation of New Mexico’s Hispanic culture and  language. García is a popular lecturer and reader. A doctor of  nineteenth-century Spanish literature\, García formerly taught at New Mexico  Highlands University in Las Vegas. García lives in Santa Fe.

SUMMARY:Photographic Processes of the 19th Century in Santa Fe Through the Lens lecture series
DESCRIPTION:Taos native Barbara Lucero Sand has a BFA in photography from Northern Arizona University and received her MFA in photographic studies from Arizona State University under the directorship  of the renowned photo historian and art critic Bill Jay.  Her creative  work focuses on historic photographic processes. In addition to her MFA\, Lucero Sand  received a graduate certificate in museum studies in anthropology while director  of Northlight Gallery\, ASU's fine art photographic collection and exhibition  space. \nWhile director\, she organized numerous exhibitions\, lectures and  educational programs.  She was also a contributing writer and editor on a  number of photo-related books and publications. She has taught collections care  and exhibition planning and design at the undergraduate and graduate levels at  ASU and as a faculty member in museum studies at the Institute of American  Indian Arts in Santa  Fe. Lucero Sand has worked as curator and as a curatorial  team member on a number of major international and national exhibitions at IAIA\,  ASU Art  Museum and at the National Hispanic Cultural Center Art  Museum in Albuquerque. \n   Through the Lens: Creating Santa Fe runs through Oct. 25 at the Palace. \nSince the 1850s\, many of the most-recognized names in photography have focused their lenses in and on Santa Fe. Through their creative efforts\, they have documented the city and its visual history\, helping to create the mystique of Santa Fe. Photography has long been significant in the construction of notions of space and place\, landscape and identity and\, especially in Santa Fe\, has helped define the geographical imagination. Curated by photographer and educator Krista Elrick and Palace of the Governors Curator of Photography\, Mary Anne Redding\, Through the Lens examines the history of Santa Fe through the visual record created by internationally respected photographers. \nBoth documentary and fine art photographers were drawn to the region’s land\, its peoples\, the regional architecture\, and the quality of light found nowhere else in the world. The project showcases outstanding photographs that reveal the aesthetic excellence of the artists working in Santa Fe. While the images document the city\, they have also been used\, historically\, as part of the marketing of the Santa Fe image and as a draw to other artists. \n

SUMMARY:Opening Reception for Exhibiting Culture
DESCRIPTION:At the Governor' Gallery (in the State Capitol).  \nSelect objects and historic images from the Carlsbad Museum and Art Center\, the Farmington Museum\, the New Mexico State University Museum\, and the Roswell Museum and Art Center.  Objects in the exhibition include historic Zia\, Zuni\, and Acoma pottery; decorative arts; contemporary and historic artwork; and weaving from the four corners region.  \nThis year we are celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the founding of the Museum of New Mexico system and the opening of he New Mexico History Museum in Santa Fe.  The state has a long history of appreciating and supporting museums and this is reflected in a large number of museums throughout the state   The four museums in this exhibition represent diversity of location\, origin\, and collections.  Whether they grew out of a local historical society\, from Works Progress Administration funding\, as a branch museum of the Museum of New Mexico\, or as a research component of a university\, each of these institutions provides outstanding exhibitions and programs both for and about their community. \nThe exhibition will be on display in the Governor's Gallery through September 11\, 2009.   \nReception from 4:00-6:00 p.m.\, hosted by the Women’s Board of the Museum of New Mexico. Gallery hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.\, Monday through Friday. Free admission.
